Clemson vs NC State Game Preview, ACC Conference Tournament

Why Clemson Will Win

Clemson is playing well.

It collapsed in February in a rough run of six straight losses, but it bounced back better with four straight wins to maybe salvage its season if it can come up with a good weekend.

What happened and how have things improved?

The defense has turned it up a few notches. It didn’t allow fewer than 69 points in any game over a few weeks, and then it didn’t give up more than that over the last two weeks.

The rebounding has been great and the defense from three has been as strong as it’s been all year, and the timing is great because …

Why NC State Will Win

NC State isn’t playing well, but here come the threes.

Wake Forest is the only team in the ACC that showed more from beyond the arc, and it’s a strength in numbers thing. The Wolfpack are okay from the outside, but it’s more about the sheer quantity of shots – they’ve made 61 in the last six games.

They’ll work outside, but Clemson doesn’t have too much an interior presence – there aren’t any blocks – and the D as a whole doesn’t put enough pressure on the guards and doesn’t force enough mistakes, but …

Clemson vs NC State: What’s Going To Happen

Can NC State find something positive over a miserable season with a win to get another game to play? It’ll be feisty.

The problem is the defense that’s getting rocked by everyone. The Pack have allowed teams to hit 50% of their shots or more in eight of the last ten games, and now it’s Clemson’s turn to have some fun.

The Tigers will have to battle through a tough first 30 minutes, but the last ten will start to swing their way as the Pack D breaks down over and over again.

Baylon Spector talked to reporters following a devastating loss at Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday.

After missing Clemson’s 14-8 win over Georgia Tech due to knee inflammation, Spector was back in the starting lineup and was forced to play an important role from the get-go. James Skalski went down with a shoulder injury pretty early on and while he embraced a coaching role from the sideline, he was unable to return to the game.

Clemson’s defense, led in part by Spector, was fragile and mistake-prone during Saturday’s 27-21 loss to NC State. Spector made a crucial error.

The veteran linebacker jumped offsides on a crucial third down with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Luckily, it wasn’t the deciding factor in Saturday’s game as NC State’s kicker missed a game-winning 39-yard field goal as time expired.

“Yeah, we did,” Spector said when asked about Clemson’s uncharacteristic penalties during the team’s 27-21 loss Saturday. “Just undisciplined in a lot of areas, especially in that key situation. That was on me. Just a bonehead mistake. I own up to it. Thankfully, we got another chance right there, but definitely a bonehead mistake by me.”

Clemson was penalized 13 times for 94 yards. A lot of the calls were due to offsides penalties and undisciplined football.

Spector was called for the offsides penalty and a late hit on NC State running back Zonovan Knight, a questionable personal foul call at that. That drive, of course, led to the Wolfpack taking their first lead of the game, 14-7 with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter.

Spector was asked why those offsides penalties continued to transpire throughout Saturday’s contest and he wasn’t able to provide an answer, but obviously, the Tigers still have to go back and watch the film.

“I just know that we got to be better in those situations,” he said. “Obviously, they had a lot of third-down conversions and a lot of those were from unidisciplinary plays by us. But, we just got to continue to get better, continue to fix those mistakes and we’ll correct them.”

A lot of Clemon’s mistakes came without two of its best players in the lineup — Skalski and Bryan Bresee. The Tigers are already without Tyler Davis for the next 7-8 weeks, only for Bresee to go down in a heap of pain with an apparent knee injury during the third quarter.

Bresee sat on the bench with a towel over his head and an ice pack on his knee. His body language said what he couldn’t. And while Clemson, nor Spector, used those injuries as an excuse, the Tigers were still missing some key cogs in the middle of the field.

“It’s tough. Jamie obviously does a great job coming in there, passionate about getting the calls in, getting people where they’re supposed to be lined up,” Spector said. “Bryan is Bryan. He’s very disruptive, obviously going to be a great player. Praying for him, because he’s hurting right now, I know that. So is Jamie. I know they both wish they could be out there. I wish they could be too.

“It’s tough, but LaVonta [Bentley], Kane [Patterson] and Keith [Maguire] all came in and they’re supposed to step up and do their job. Proud of those guys to come in, step up and make plays and call the plays like they should.”

What happened?

Clemson came into Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday looking to put its offensive woes to bed, but Week 4’s result only further prolonged the issue at hand.

The Tigers lost for a second time in September for the first time since 2014. It was also Clemson’s first loss to an unranked opponent in 36 games.

The result became more than apparent when Clemson’s offense failed to get any sort of rhythm going offensively. After D.J. Uiagalelei’s 32-yard touchdown pass to Justyn Ross gave Clemson an early lead, the Tigers weren’t able to do much of anything. Clemson had 7 three-and-outs and a Uiagalelei interception to show for it.

The offense gave a labored defense no time to breathe. And while NC State’s offense didn’t operate at will, it was enough to win.

Clemson ran 49 total plays. NC State ran 96 plays. The Wolfpack had the ball for 41 minutes and 18 seconds. The Tigers? 18:12.

The game should’ve never been as close as it was. Three missed field goals and further missed opportunities kept giving Clemson chances it probably didn’t deserve.

The magic would run out in Clemson’s second offensive possession of overtime.

What went wrong?

Literally everything.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong for the Clemson Tigers in Saturday’s 27-21 loss to N.C. State and it starts with the offense.

Offensive struggles? Check. Injures? Check. A worn-out defense? Check.

Tony Elliott’s unit, which has been heavily criticized for its lack of progress, failed to take a step forward. In fact, the offense took a step back after converting a 5-play, 80-yard drive in just 1:33. From there, Clemson was riddled with offensive miscues that resulted in three-and-out after and three-and-out.

It was a nightmarish day for Clemson offensively and that bled into what the Tigers were able to do on defense. Coming into the game, Clemson had yet to allow a touchdown through three games. That obviously changed Saturday. That wasn’t unexpected, but what wasn’t necessarily expected was the offense playing so poorly that it expedited a defense dealing with injuries and a whole lot of fatigue.

By the time the Tigers had to be on the field for back-to-back possession in overtime, the defense had nothing left to give. While they were able to prevent the Wolfpack from converting a mandatory two-point conversion, the damage was already done.

Speaking of damage, Clemson did more than just lose to the Wolfpack. They likely lost three key cogs in James Skalski (shoulder), Bryan Bresee (knee) and Will Shipley (knee), who all didn’t return to Saturday’s loss.

Talk about adding insult to injury.

Game-changing moment

The game should have been over when Clemson failed to take advantage of NC State missing a 51-yard field goal. The Tigers had the ball at their own 34-yard line with 6:17 to play. What happened next was the culmination of an entire game of offensive frustration across one single drive. Ross got nothing on a screen pass. Will Shipley gained two yards on a run. Uiagalelei hardly had any touch on a crucial third-down conversion. Punt.

However, the Tigers lived to see another day, whether they deserved to or not, after Christopher Dunn, Jr. missed a would-be game-winning 39-yard field goal as time expired.

Saturday’s true game-changing moment was when Devin Carter scored the game-winning touchdown, cradling an improbable touchdown in the back corner of the endzone. Devin Leary’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Carter was enough cushion to send NC State home winners.

Dan Orlovsky was on the call for Clemson’s 14-8 win over Georgia Tech.

The ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback has seen Clemson’s offense, or lack thereof, in action. He also may know a thing or two about why the Tigers are struggling offensively.

Through 10 quarters, Clemson has scored just 24 points against FBS opponents, which includes Justyn Ross’ 32-yard touchdown reception to give the Tigers an early 7-0 lead Saturday.

At halftime, the Tigers had just eight yards of rushing and 87 total yards on offense. After Clemson’s scoring drive, the Tigers had four three-and-outs and a D.J. Uiagalelei interception.

The Tigers’ offense hit a standstill in the second quarter as the team was able to gain just eight yards of total offense. Clemson was unable to take advantage of a five-play, 80-yard drive that took just one minute and 33 seconds.

Orlovsky diagnosed what he believes to be wrong with Clemson’s offense at the moment.

The D.J. is spinning for Clemson.

The Tigers’ offense finally got into a rhythm as D.J. Uiagalelei found Justyn Ross in the back of the end zone for a 32-yard touchdown.

That score capped off a five-play, 80-yard drive, which only took one minute and 33 seconds. B.T. Potter drilled the extra point to give Clemson an early 7-0 lead.

On Clemson’s first scoring drive of the game, Uiagalelei completed 3 of 4 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown.

GameDay crew dishes on state of Clemson’s program: ‘These guys are pissed’

On the first hour of this Saturday’s version of ESPN’s College GameDay, the trio of David Pollack, Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit each dished their thoughts out on the state of Clemson’s program and where the Tigers go from here.

Leading up to today’s game against NC State, ESPN set forth a segment that showed Matt Bockhort’s fiery comments from earlier this week. It resonated with the crew and summarizes the level of frustration that has boiled up until this point.

“If I’m Dabo, all these years I’ve had to manufacture so many bad things against me like these guys are pissed now,” Pollack said. “These guys are literally upset. They have something to be upset about. Usually, it’s like ‘Hey we’re gonna go to the natty. We’re gonna be in the final four, the ACC stinks.’ Dabo’s got everything he needs right now. Listen, do they need to get some things fixed? 100 percent. The offensive line has to get better. I think the quarterback run game will be more and more a part of this offense. But right now, the best thing about this team is they’re gonna be pissed off.”

As for Howard, the former Heisman winner believes that D.J. Uiagalelei “almost refuses to run.” That he’s hesitant and won’t tuck the ball and run unless instructed otherwise by his offensive coordinator, Tony Elliott.

Howard has been concerned with Clemson’s offense and he hasn’t been shy about sharing that opinion throughout. However, he does love what he’s seen from Bockhorst and his willingness to hold others around him accountable.

“I just love the way that Matt Bockhorst said, ‘Listen, I’m not here to make friends.’ He’s now starting to hold his teammates accountable,” Howard said. “When Dabo Swinney did a press conference he said, “Yeah, he’s playing a lot of football here. He’s seen the way we win. He knows the standard.’ So now, he’s gonna hold his teammates accountable. I love that. I hope he shows himself today when they play NC State, though.”

As for Herbstreit, he believes Clemson’s issues offensively go beyond this season and into last, where they were masked by two first-round picks, who now play for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Clemson’s had some years where they’ve struggled early,” Herbstreit said. “I think Tony Elliott, what I’ve seen him do, is they go back to the practice and simplify, help the offensive line out and they go fast. I think we’ll see more tempo, more to try to accelerate, try to get NC. State on their heels.

“But there are real issues here with this offensive line. This was an issue last year. It was hidden because you had Travis Etienne, you had Trevor Lawrence and they threw the ball out more than they were able to run. They cannot run the ball for the second year in a row as we sit here right now. You got NC State, if they’re smart, they’re gonna set back and coverage and not let [Joseph] Ngata…make them beat you vertically and just see if they can run the ball and move the ball down the field.”

Clemson’s offense will try to right the ship when the Tigers take on NC State (2-1, 0-0 ACC) today at 3:30 p.m. at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.

Clemson vs NC State Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

So is it officially time to freak out?

The offense couldn’t work in the 14-8 win over Georgia Tech, the passing game has been a problem, and hanging 49 on South Carolina State a few weeks ago now seems like more of an aberration.

But the defense has been outstanding.

It stuffed Georgia, held on against Georgia Tech when the O wasn’t getting the job done, and is doing a great job of getting off the field.

NC State’s overall stats are great, but the O worked against USF and Furman, but stalled on the ground in the loss to Mississippi State. The ground attack isn’t going to work this week, either, but …

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why NC State Will Win

The Clemson defense might be deep and outstanding, but it lost DT Tyler Davis to a torn bicep. He was just getting back into a groove after missing the opener, and now he’s out for several weeks.

NC State just needs to find a way to come up with a few scores – its defense is good enough to keep the middling Tiger attack under wraps. Pack QB Devin Leary has been good, the offensive line has given him time to work, and the defense takes care of the rest.

Yes, there was a long delay, and yes, it was a strange game overall, but things aren’t going well when you can’t get to 300 yards and need a fourth quarter touchdown to get by Georgia Tech. Clemson really is struggling.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

NC State has the defense, the experience on offense, and the coaching staff to pull this off if Clemson really is down and doesn’t have a few kinks to work out …

Offensively. The Clemson defense is just fine.

The Tigers O will continue to be lousy, but the D will come up with stop after stop to keep the game alive. NC State’s offense will stall on third downs, DJ Uiagalelei will hit on one big second half throw, and the upset bid will come up just short.

NC State looking to knock Clemson off its ‘stepping stool’

CHARLOTTE — NC State hasn’t beaten Clemson since 2011.

The Tigers have rifled off eight straight victories against the Wolfpack, including a convincing 55-10 victory back on Nov. 9, 2019.

Clemson and NC State didn’t face off last season, but the two teams will be back in action on Sept. 25, for what will be the Wolfpack’s first conference matchup of the season.

NC State redshirt sophomore linebacker Payton Wilson recalled the atmosphere being “incredible,” even though the Wolfpack were “terrible,” in ‘19.

Two seasons later, the expectations are much higher for an NC State team that expects to win.

So, how do the Wolfpack go about closing that sizable gap between them and Clemson?

Wilson took a stab at the question during Thursday’s ACC kickoff at The Westin in Charlotte, knowing full well that this is a different NC State team.

“I think it’s just taking it one game at a time,” he told TCI. “When we get to that Week 4, when we’re playing Clemson, I think it’s about knowing what they do, playing our hardest and keeping that chip on our shoulder.

“NC State does get disrespected sometimes and I think we have the talent to take it to the next level this year. I think this year, it’s more about going out there and proving it, proving to ourselves that we can beat these teams.”

Dave Doeren, NC State’s head coach, later echoed those sentiments.

He firmly believes in the talent his team possesses, much like Wilson, but acknowledged that the Wolfpack’s showdown with Clemson will likely be a must-win game if they plan on contending in the ACC.

As for Wilson, he knows it’s going to take an all-around effort and then some if they plan on knocking off the Tigers.

“We want to play the best teams in the nation, we want to show that we can compete,” Wilson added. “It just takes hard work, discipline and brotherhood to beat someone as big as Clemson. They’re up on a stepping stool, to get there it takes everyone on the team. All 135 guys, not just the 22 out there playing.”
