Clemson’s defense does its job in the first half

The first half of Clemson and Georgia’s marquee matchup could be described as college football’s version of a pitcher’s duel.

Two of the top defenses in the country found their match, trading punch for punch in Saturday night’s heavyweight battle.

While J.T. Daniels looked sharp, precise and accurate, the Bulldogs didn’t exactly stretch the football down the field and Clemson’s defense giving Georgia a lot of zone looks certainly didn’t help in that department.

Daniels finished the first half completing 13 of 16 passes with 68 passing yards. Georgia also totaled 42 rushing yards on 12 carries, using a running back by committee approach out of the backfield.

While Georgia didn’t score an offensive touchdown, the Bulldogs were able to control the battle of field position and get some points on the board, thanks to some great defensive anticipation from Christopher Smith, who returned D.J. Uiagalelei’s intended pass for Justyn Ross for a pick-six.

Georgia was able to convert on 3 of 7 third downs while picking up a total of six first downs in the game’s first 30 minutes. Still, Clemson was able to get necessary stops when called upon, including a little bit of luck when Bulldogs kicker Jack Podlesny pushed a 36-yard field goal attempt a little too far to the left.

Brent Venables’s unit certainly got the job down when called upon, especially with how much the offense struggled to string together successive drives throughout the course of the first half.

Clemson’s defense allowed just 110 yards of total offense from Georgia. The defense hasn’t backed down from any challenge or wrinkle that Georgia’s thrown its way thus far. Look for that to continue in the second half, in what’s been a neck and neck game.

So, who were some of Clemson’s top defensive performers in the first half?

Myles Murphy and Bryan Bresee both came through with big 0.5 tackles for loss. Additionally, senior cornerback Mario Goordich, Jr. showed out during the first half, recording a total of nine tackles and providing some stout coverage. Trenton Simpson, who was everywhere during the 16 minutes that Georgia’s offense was on the field, also added a quarterback hurry.

Georgia’s defense a tad better than Clemson’s

CHARLOTTE – Fifth-ranked Georgia entered the halftime locker room with a 7-0 lead over Clemson at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday night thanks to outstanding defensive play.

The Bulldogs broke gridlock in the scoreless game with 2:58 to play in the half with a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown by Christopher Smith.

Georgia held the Tigers to 90 yards of total offense and one yard on 10 rushing attempts. Clemson matched the defensive intensity holding the Bulldogs to 110 total yards in the opening half.

In the first quarter, the Bulldogs pinned Clemson deep in its own territory with drives that started at its own 10, its own 2 and its most favorable start at its own 20-yard line.

Georgia took full advantage of the tough field position and swarmed the Tigers with a pair of sacks in the first fifteen minutes and three in the half.

Georgia got an opportunity to score with a 12 play 44-yard drive at the end of the first quarter and set up a 36-yard field goal attempt for Jack Podlensy that was missed and gave the ball back to the Tigers with 14:19 to play in the second quarter.

Then with less than three minutes remaining in the quarter, after Georgia muffed a punt and gave the Tigers the ball at midfield, Smith jumped in front of Justyn Ross to intercept D.J. Uiagalelei’s pass and return it for a 74 touchdown to give Georgia a 7-0 lead.

Clemson finished the first half 2-for-8 on third down as it struggled to find momentum offensively. And Uiagalelei finished 10-of-20 for 89 yards and an interception.

Halftime Report: Georgia leads Clemson 7-0

Halftime Report: Georgia leads Clemson 7-0

In a game where offense has been hard to come by, Georgia finds itself leading 7-0 thanks to a Christopher Smith pick six midway through the second quarter.

Georgia has held Clemson to 1 rushing yard tonight but has only accounted for 42 of its own.

Like I said, not much offense.

If there’s one big takeaway from this game so far, it’s that this Georgia defense is absolutely ferocious.

Georgia has held Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagelelei to just 89 yards on 10/20 passing. Georgia has been applying pressure and rattling the young quarterback.

But for Clemson, the Tigers are likely proud of their defensive effort as well.

Star quarterback JT Daniels has not been able to do much. He’s 13/16 for only 68 passing yards.

Georgia kicker Jack Podlesny missed a short field goal that should have given Georgia an earlier lead.

Dawgs strike first! Pick six puts UGA up 7-0

With the offense struggling and unable to make things happen, it was up to the defense to get it done.

Boom!

With the offense struggling and unable to make things happen, it was up to the defense to get it done.

And get it done they did.

On 3rd and 4, with Clemson rolling and at the UGA 30 yard line, Georgia junior defensive back stepped in between the ball and the receiver and picked off Clemson freshman quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and took the interception 74 yards to the house.

Dawgs lead it 7-0.

Looking for an opportunity to receive more carries and be a feature back elsewhere, Chez Mellusi transferred to the University of Wisconsin, back in June and ultimately won the starting job outright.

The former Clemson Tiger made his debut with the Badgers in a 16-10 loss to Penn State.

Mellusi had 31 carries with 121 rushing yards (3.9 YPC) and a rushing touchdown. He scored Wisconsin’s lone touchdown on the afternoon, finding the endzone on a three-yard score to cap off a 10-play, 75-yard drive.

Mellusi recorded 24 carries across 10 games for the Tigers last season. He surpassed that total in his first game in a Badgers’ uniform.
