Clemson basketball ranks Top 25 in first 2024-25 KenPom ratings

Check out where Clemson landed in the initial 2024-25 KenPom ratings, released Monday.

The Clemson Tigers are hoping to build off a historic season in 2023-24. Coach Brad Brownell’s squad made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 6 seed and reeled off three straight wins to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1980. The Tigers fell 89-82 to the Alabama Crimson Tide with a trip to the Final Four on the line.

How far the Tigers can go after a deep NCAA Tournament run is anyone’s guess, but the 2024-25 Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings (KenPom) were released Monday.

Clemson landed at No. 24 with a net plus rating of +18.62. The Tigers are rated one spot ahead of John Calipari and the Arkansas Razorbacks and one spot below the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Coach Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars topped the KenPom ratings at +29.45, followed by the Duke Blue Devils (+26.67) at No. 2 and the Auburn Tigers (+26.21) at No. 3.

Alabama (No. 4, +25.66) and the two-time defending national champion UConn Huskies (No. 5, +25.58) rounded out the top five. Aside from Duke and Clemson, the only other ACC team that cracked the Top 25 KenPom ratings were the North Carolina Tar Heels (+22.14) at No. 14.

KenPom explains their ratings this way:

“The purpose of this system is to show how strong a team would be if it played tonight, independent of injuries or emotional factors. Since nobody can see every team play all (or even most) of their games, this system is designed to give a snapshot of a team’s current level of play.”

Clemson opens the 2024-25 regular season Nov. 4 against Charleston Southern at 7 p.m. ET at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Start time, TV info announced for critical Clemson-Boise State nonconference basketball game

Here’s when Clemson will take on Boise State in one of the Tigers’ biggest nonconference games on the 2024-25 men’s basketball schedule.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson Tigers have a strong nonconference schedule before ACC play begins in December.

The Tigers have nonconference matchups this year against the Kentucky Wildcats, Memphis Tigers and Boise State Broncos, plus their annual rivalry with the South Carolina Gamecocks.

On Friday, tipoff time and TV information for Clemson’s Nov. 17 matchup at Boise State was announced. The Tigers and Broncos will get underway at 1:30 p.m. ET from ExtraMile Arena in Boise. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Boise State finished third in the Mountain West standings a year ago at 22-11 overall and 13-5 in conference play. The Broncos reached the “First Four” round of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio, but fell 60-53 to the Colorado Buffaloes.

Clemson is coming off its deepest NCAA Tournament run since 1980, reaching the Elite Eight after knocking off New Mexico, followed by the No. 3 seed Baylor Bears and No. 2 seed Arizona Wildcats. With a trip to the Final Four on the line, the Tigers fell 89-82 to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Elite Eight in Los Angeles.

Brownell is beginning his 15th season as Clemson’s head coach. The Tigers will open the 2024-25 season against Charleston Southern on Nov. 4 at Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson returns six scholarship players from a season ago, including sixth-year senior guard Chase Hunter and forward/center Ian Schieffelin.

Schieffelin was named Most Improved Player in the ACC for 2023-24.

Marquee Clemson-Kentucky basketball game in December will be late tipoff

A late tipoff awaits Clemson and Kentucky’s marquee nonconference showdown in the SEC/ACC Challenge in December.

If you’re really looking forward to seeing the Clemson Tigers square off against the Kentucky Wildcats as part of this year’s SEC/ACC Challenge, you might need an excuse to miss work the following day.

That’s because Clemson’s game against Kentucky basketball will be a late tipoff. How late? The Tigers and Wildcats will get underway at 9:30 p.m. locally in the Upstate when the two teams meet on Dec. 3 at Littlejohn Coliseum. The game will be televised on ESPN, who announced start times for the SEC-ACC Challenge on Monday.

Clemson hasn’t faced Kentucky on the hardwood since the beginning of the 1997-98 season, a 76-61 Wildcats victory at the Premier Classic in Phoenix that November. Rick Barnes and Tubby Smith were the head coaches at Clemson and Kentucky, respectively, at the time.

The Wildcats went on to win the NCAA men’s basketball championship against Utah at the Alamodome in San Antonio in March 1998.

A year earlier, the Tigers bested Kentucky, 79-71, in overtime on Nov. 15, 1996 in the BCA Classic at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. It would turn out to be Rick Pitino’s final season as Wildcats head coach. Pitino would lose his bid at a second straight title months later with a loss to Arizona in the national championship game — also at RCA Dome.

Kentucky leads the all-time series against Clemson, 12-4.

Clemson is coming off its best season in over 40 years. The Tigers reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last March for only the second time in school history — and the first time since 1980.

Kentucky was a No. 3 seed in the tournament but fell to No. 14 seed Oakland in the first round in John Calipari’s final game as Wildcats coach after 15 seasons. Amid mounting pressure, Calipari left Lexington for the Arkansas Razorbacks’ coaching job weeks later.

Brad Brownell will be in his 15th season as Clemson’s head coach when the Tigers open the 2024-25 campaign against Charleston Southern on Nov. 4 at Littlejohn Coliseum. Clemson returns six scholarship players from a season ago, including sixth-year senior guard Chase Hunter and forward/center Ian Schieffelin.

Both were instrumental in the Tigers’ deep run to the Elite Eight. Schieffelin was named the ACC’s Most Improved Player a season ago.

Clemson basketball opponent in Sunshine Slam announced

Here’s who the Clemson men’s basketball team will face in the 2024 Sunshine Slam event down in Daytona Beach.

The Clemson men’s basketball team will be playing in the 2024 Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, Fla., this November.

That scheduling news was announced back in May, when it was revealed that the Tigers would play in the annual event along with Penn State, Fordham and San Francisco.

The Tigers recently announced that they’ll open the two-day event against San Francisco with Penn State facing off against Fordham on Monday, Nov. 25. The winners of the head-to-head matchups will meet in a championship game the following day, as will the losing teams of the opening-round contests in a third-place game.

Clemson reached the NCAA Tournament last March as a No. 6 seed and made an improbable run to the Elite Eight, beating No. 3 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed Arizona before falling to No. 4 seed Alabama. It was the first time the Tigers had reached the Elite Eight since 1980.

San Fransisco went 23-11 overall and 11-5 in conference play last season, finishing third in the West Coast Conference.

Clemson opens the 2024-25 men’s basketball season at Littlejohn Coliseum against Charleston Southern on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. ET.

Among other nonconference opponents Brad Brownell’s team will face this season in addition to San Francisco and either Penn State or Fordham are Boise State (in Boise), Memphis (at home), South Carolina (in Columbia), and Kentucky (at home).

Clemson men’s basketball drops out of the latest USA SPORTS Coaches Poll

The Tigers have been on a tough run, leading to them falling out of the latest Coaches Poll.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson men’s basketball team started off their season scorching hot, but the Tigers have cooled off in recent weeks.

With their cold run, where they’ve lost three of their last four games, the Tigers have fallen out of the rankings of the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Tigers went from No.22 to out of the ranks after a week where they lost 87-72 to Virginia Tech and won 89-78 against Boston College.

Though the Tigers are no longer ranked in the Coaches Poll, they are still receiving votes (39). The Tigers have two opportunities this week to earn their way back into the rankings as they host Georgia Tech on Tuesday and travel to Florida State to face the Seminoles on Saturday.

Clemson moves up a spot in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Clemson men’s basketball remains one of the country’s best teams this season.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson men’s basketball team remain one of the top teams in the country after another successful week.

Playing in one game last week, the Tigers looked excellent at home as they took down Queens 109-79 on Friday. Clemson’s offense was on fire in the win, with the Tigers scoring the most points the program has had in a game since 2002.

Though a strong win, the Tigers saw little movement in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. They did move up, but just one spot from No.18 to No.17. It wasn’t the most active week of college basketball with the holiday, so the Tigers didn’t get as many opportunities to prove their case for making a bigger jump.

Clemson debuts in the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

Clemson basketball flew up the rankings into the top 25 for the first time this season.

Like the AP Poll, Clemson has made another debut in a men’s basketball top 25 rankings.

Clemson (7-0, 1-0 ACC) joined the USA TODAY Sports Men’sCcollege Basketball Coaches Poll rankings for the first time this season, ranking No.20 in the country. The Tigers moved up 14 spots from unranked to a top 20 team. This comes following another great week from head coach Brad Brownell’s team where they picked up a ranked win over Alabama on the road, followed by an ACC win over Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Overall, this is exactly the type of start you wanted from this Clemson team that is filled with veterans and some of the best talent in the conference. It is early in the season, but right now, the Tigers look like one of the best teams in the conference.

Clemson men’s basketball ranks No.5 in the 2023 ACC Preseason Poll

Clemson is one of the top teams in the ACC heading into the season.

CHARLOTTE — PJ Hall (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) was tabbed preseason First Team All-ACC on Thursday by media at the league’s annual preseason media day, which was held in Charlotte on Wednesday. Hall is the second Clemson player since 2020 to be named preseason All-ACC First Team, joining Aamir Simms.

In addition, Clemson was chosen to finish fifth in the ACC. That is the highest preseason prediction for the Tigers since 2008-09 when they were also picked to finish fifth.

Hall was named to the first team along with Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Armando Bacot (North Carolina), Reece Beekman (Virginia) and Norchad Omier (Miami (Fla.)). He is coming off of a Third Team All-ACC season in 2022-23. He averaged a team-leading 15.3 points per game to go along with 5.7 rebounds per contest and 37 blocks and 22 steals. He shot 53.5 percent from the floor and 39.8 percent from three. He finished 78.6 percent from the foul line.

In league play, Hall was even better. The Spartanburg, S.C. native averaged a team-best 17.6 points to go with 6.6 rebounds. He shot 54.0 percent in ACC play, including 83.3 percent at the foul line. He maintained a high average from three (38.6 percent).

Hall became the 45th 1,000-point scorer in Clemson history against Notre Dame (March 4, 2023) and has 1,043 points entering this season. He became just the 11th from the state of South Carolina to score 1,000 points at Clemson.

Despite being on a minute restriction last year, Hall produced 27 double-digit scoring games, ten 20-point games and four double-doubles.

Clemson set a new mark for league wins in any conference last season with 14 ACC victories. The 14 wins broke a school record by three games. The .700 winning percentage was the third best in Clemson history, and better than 11 of the previous 13 Clemson teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Clemson started 7-0 and 10-1 in the ACC last year and the seven consecutive league wins tied a school record that dated to 1967. The Tigers had six wins over teams that reached the NCAA Tournament, just one less than Clemson’s Sweet 16 team of 2018. Many of the victories were in dominant fashion. The Tigers won eight ACC games by double digits and five of those were by at least 20 points. No other ACC team had as many league wins by that margin.

Clemson lands massive commitment from Top-70 4-star Guard Del Jones

Brad Brownell lands another huge recruit in the 2024 class.

Brad Brownell and the Clemson basketball staff are on a hot streak recruiting in the 2024 class.

Monday, Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) four-star point guard Del Jones announced that he has verbally committed to play for Brownell and the Tigers. This is a massive pickup for the Tigers and is further proof that this program is trending in the right direction.

According to ESPN’s recruiting rankings, Jones is currently the No.14 guard and No.66 overall player in the 2024 class. Jones chose Clemson over Arizona State, Oregon, Tennessee, and West Virginia, some big basketball schools.

Jones is now the third member of Clemson’s 2024 recruiting class, which includes Top-100 recruit Dallas Thomas and legacy commit Ace Buckner
