Clemson goes to the dogs, gets crushed by Georgia in season opener

Georgia crushes Clemson, 34-3.

No. 1 Georgia showed why they’re the early favorite to win the 2024 college football national championship.

Clemson showed why the gap between the Tigers and the elite programs of the sport is only widening.

The Bulldogs used 28 second-half points to hand the 14th-ranked Tigers one of their worst season-opening losses in a dominant 34-3 beatdown Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Despite just 76 yards of total offense — 54 passing, 22 rushing — and two first downs in the first half, Clemson (0-1) trailed only 6-0 going into intermission. In the third quarter, Georgia (1-0) put together two touchdown drives to take a commanding 20-3 lead.

The Bulldogs went up 13-0 on their first drive of the second half, getting a 9-yard touchdown pass from Carson Beck to Colbie Young, who beat Jeadyn Lukus in coverage to cap a seven-play drive that went 75 yards in 2:59.

Unfortunately for Clemson, Georgia was just getting started.

After the Tigers got on the board with a 26-yard field goal from freshman kicker Nolan Hauser to cut the lead to 13-3, Georgia went right back to work on its next series.

Beck hit Nate Frazier coming out of the backfield for 24 yards on the first play of the drive. Beck then converted a 3rd-and-10 when he hit Vanderbilt transfer London Humphreys for 23 yards. A few plays later, Frazier capped off an eight-play, 75-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 20-3 with 3:06 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Humphreys caught a 40-yard touchdown catch-and-run to make it 27-3 with 9:57 to play in the game. The Bulldogs tacked on another score with 6:09 left when Cash Jones ran 15 yards for a touchdown to up the lead to 34-3 and cap the scoring.

Clemson’s offense was punchless against the Bulldogs’ top-rated defense. Their best drive was when Klubnik led the Tigers into the red zone on their first possession of the second half. Clemson got to the Georgia 6-yard line before settling for Hauser’s field goal. The drive went 66 yards on 12 plays.

Georgia finished with 447 yards of total offense to Clemson’s 188. Beck was 23 of 33 for 278 yards and two touchdowns. Frazier led the Bulldogs’ rushing attack with 83 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Humphries’ two catches went for 63 yards, and Arian Smith led Georgia in receptions with five for 56 yards.

Klubnik finished 18 of 29 for 142 yards (4.9 per completion) and an interception. Phil Mafah led the Tigers in rushing with 59 yards on 16 carries.

Antonio Williams had six catches for 76 yards as Clemson failed to get either highly touted true freshmen Bryant Wesco or T.J. Moore involved in the game. Wesco made one catch for five yards while Moore had one catch for seven yards. Tyler Brown, the Tigers’ most explosive receiver a year ago, had only three catches for 25 yards.

Rich history of Clemson, Georgia football rivalry set to write a new chapter

Clemson and Georgia are set to meet for the 65th time in history. The Bulldogs are the third-most common nonconference opponent the Tigers have faced through the years.

Look up the history of Clemson football and you won’t find many nonconference opponents the Tigers have played more often through the years than the Georgia Bulldogs.

Another chapter in the Clemson-Georgia rivalry will be written today when the Tigers face the Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta beginning at noon ET. The game can be seen on ABC.

A quick look at various record books shows that Clemson has faced only two other nonconference foes more often than Georgia in the history of Tiger football, which began play in 1896.

One of those schools, of course, is South Carolina. The Palmetto Series dates back to the inaugural season of Clemson football, and the Tigers and Gamecocks have played almost every year since, sans the recent exception of 2020 (Captain Trips). With 120 all-time meetings, they are the most common opponent in each school’s history.

The only other nonconference member Clemson has played more often than Georgia is Maryland, a former ACC member who called the league home for over 60 years before joining the Big Ten in 2014.

The Tigers and Terrapins have met 62 times dating back to their days in the old Southern Conference. Both helped form the ACC in 1953 as conference charter members, along with Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest.

That brings us to Clemson vs. Georgia.

The schools, situated only 70 miles apart, held their first meeting in 1897. They met almost every year on the gridiron from 1962 to 1987 before a three-year pause. The Tigers and Bulldogs briefly resumed play in back-to-back years from 1990-91 and again in 1994-95.

It would be seven years before the two played another home-and-home series between Athens and Death Valley, and another 10 years after that when they met again in 2013 and 2014.

Georgia leads the all-time series, 43-18-4, and recent history has favored the Bulldogs. They have won all but four meetings since Clemson’s national championship season in 1981 under coach Danny Ford and are 10-4 in the last 14 matchups dating back to ’82. That includes the 10-3 slugfest in Charlotte to open the 2021 season.

This year’s meeting will mark the 65th time that the Tigers and Bulldogs will meet in head-to-head play. To put that into perspective, Clemson has faced Georgia more times than long-standing fellow ACC members North Carolina, Duke and Virginia.

The teams currently have no plans to resume meeting on an annual basis moving forward, though they’re scheduled to play home-and-home series in 2029-30 and again in 2032-33.

That could change if the next wave of conference realignment were to see Clemson join the SEC. Greg Sankey may be focused on the “16 is our today and 16 is our tomorrow” mantra he repeated at SEC Media Days in July, but that’s not to say that number is set in stone, given the uncertainty of the ACC’s future.

Whatever that future holds — for conference realignment, mega TV deals and college football as a whole — Clemson vs. Georgia will always be must-see TV.

Clemson (0-0) vs Georgia (0-0) Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

Lost in yet another amazing season by Clemson, and yet another ACC Championship, and yet another trip to the College Football Playoff was a defense that was never 100% right.

It was still No. 1 in the ACC in total and scoring defense, but it never quite had all of the parts working like they were supposed to.

It was hardly a rebuilding year, but it was a young group that suffered through too many bumps and bruises – which turned into a minor positive to create a more seasoned D for 2021. Even so, it was still fantastic, and now …

Look out. This is a seasoned, veteran D full of next-level talents and top tacklers and producers from 2020.

How good is it? Future NFL starting CB Derion Kendrick left for Georgia, and the secondary might still be the best in college football.

Oh yeah, and the offense has that DJ Uiagalelei guy at quarterback – he almost certainly would’ve the No. 2 overall pick behind Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft, if he was eligible – and in a wonderful story, star WR Justyn Ross is expected to be back after missing all of last year and pushing through a frightening neck and spine condition.

It’s Clemson. It has as much talent as anyone, the coaching is as good as any in the country, and it’ll be a stunner if there’s anything less than another ACC Championship and another trip to the College Football Playoff no matter how this game shakes out.

But to nitpick …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Will Win

Will Clemson be able to run the ball?

Current Jacksonville Jaguar Travis Etienne wasn’t his normal dominant self stat-wise, mostly because he didn’t consistently have a whole lot of room to move.

The Tiger offensive front will be outstanding, but it has to prove it can blast away for a ground attack that only hit the 200-yard mark three times after getting there in ten games in 2019.

And it has to do it against the nation’s best defense against the run in 2020.

The Bulldog D reloaded with more next-level talents, the rotation on the line is a killer, and overall there could be as many as six top two-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

But the spotlight will be on JT Daniels – the best starting quarterback yet in the Kirby Smart era, considering Justin Fields played more of a complementary role when he was there.

He give the Bulldog offense a downfield passing attack it hasn’t had in a long, long time, and it’s all going to work behind a tremendous offensive front that has too much talent to not be among the nation’s best.

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Be shocked if this is a shootout – these defenses are too good.

Both offenses will hang 40+ on the board on a regular basis, but in Atlanta it’s going to be tough getting the respective ground attacks moving, and both quarterbacks will be under pressure all game long.

In the big picture, this game is about the loser. If it’s a close battle that comes down to the very end, both teams are still deep in the College Football Playoff chase no matter what. If it’s a total wipeout, though, that’s a problem.

It’s not going to be a total wipeout.

Expect a brutal, hard-hitting game with national championship intensity throughout.

Georgia will have a little more success on the ground, Clemson will have a little more success through the air, and in the end, Uiagalelei will throw one more pick than Daniels – that will be the difference.

Welcome to the 2021 college football season. This is is what we’ve all been waiting for, and it won’t disappoint. (Fingers crossed.)

Georgia vs Clemson season-opener to be played in full stadium

Georgia vs Clemson, UGA football’s season-opener, will be played in a full stadium, according to the Carolina Panthers tema president.

For the first time since the 2019 season, Georgia football will play a game in a full stadium.

Carolina Panthers team president Tom Glick announced on Monday that Bank of America Stadium, home of the Panthers, will operate at full capacity this fall.

That includes Georgia’s week one matchup against Clemson in Charlotte.

“I’m happy to confirm that we will be operating here at Bank of America Stadium at full capacity and under normal circumstances for the 2021 football season,” Glick said. “It will include East Carolina-Appalachian State and Georgia-Clemson.”

Bank of America stadium holds 75,523 people when at full capacity. That’s still nearly 20,000 less than Georgia’s Sanford Stadium, but it’s a full stadium nonetheless.

Glick also mentioned that attendees will not be required to wear masks and will not need to show proof of vaccination. He also said there will be no temperature checks. Though masks are not required, they will be available for anyone who wants one.

Georgia vs Clemson is scheduled to kickoff on September 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on ABC.

Dabo Swinney shares thoughts on opening against Georgia in 2021

Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney gives his thoughts on opening against Georgia football in Charlotte for the 2021 season.

Both Georgia and Clemson dropped their opening games for the 2021 college football season in order to ramp up the competition and play each other.

The two programs have been at the top of the rankings for quite a while now and it’s about time they’re due for a matchup like this.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shared his thought with the media following spring practice this Tuesday.

“This was a situation where you set these things out in advance and all of a sudden 2021 was an oddball year for us, and we really needed another game. So, it worked out, especially being able to go to Charlotte. That’s kind of been the formula we’ve had for a long time. … Dan (Radakovich) and I talked about it last summer. I hate the fact we lose a home game, because it’s important to our community, but we’ll get back on track on how we do things moving forward.” said Swinney.

“And it’s exciting … we may not have done it if it was just another random team, but the fact we get a chance to play Georgia is something I think both fan bases will be excited about. Obviously, it’ll be a tough game; it’s hard to win those games, but it’ll be an exciting way to start it off.”

2014 was the last time the schools met in Athens when former Georgia running back Todd Gurley went off for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns, helping the Dawgs win 45-21.  The Bulldogs hold 42-18-4 record all-time against Clemson.

The game is scheduled for September 4th at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC.

The two are also scheduled to kickoff the 2024 season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.
