Clemson is showing interest in this in-state standout who has seen his recruitment take off of late.

Aiken (S.C.) High School wide receiver Braylon Staley, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior in the class of 2024, has been in contact with Tigers receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

“I spoke with the WR coach, Coach Grisham from Clemson,” Staley told The Clemson Insider recently. “We discussed how he was impressed with my film this season.”

Staley – who has picked up more than a half dozen Division I FBS offers since late October, including a few ACC offers – put a strong junior campaign on tape.

“Personally, I think my season went well,” he said. “My head coach (Olajuwon Paige) put me in a position where I was able to catch a few balls for 900 yards and eight touchdowns.”

Staley is the son of former Clemson signee and Mississippi State defensive back Brian Staley, and although they haven’t talked a whole lot about Clemson, Braylon has heard good things about it from his father.

“My dad was a signee but ended up going to Mississippi State due to being one credit short to enroll,” Braylon said. “So, we haven’t had conversations that much. He has expressed that it is a great place and the environment is second to none there.”

Braylon gave his overall thoughts on Dabo Swinney’s team, based on what he’s seen through the television screen.

“I think Coach Dabo’s system is great,” he said. “He puts his players in position to make plays and to be successful in his offense from what I’ve watched on TV.”

Braylon has yet to attend a game at Clemson, though it sounds like that may change soon.

“I’ve never been to Death Valley,” he said, “but we are in the process of scheduling an invite for their last home game (vs. South Carolina on Nov. 26).”

Boston College gave Braylon his first offer on Oct. 26. Since then, he has seen his recruitment continue to gain steam while collecting offers from Virginia Tech, Miami, Wake Forest, Coastal Carolina, Middle Tennessee, East Carolina and James Madison.

Braylon visited Wake Forest last Saturday, and along with the Demon Deacons, he named South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Duke, West Virginia and Appalachian State as other schools showing interest in addition to Clemson.

“I would describe myself as being explosive with great hands!” he said regarding what he feels he can bring to the table for a college team as a receiver. “I would bring a go-getter mindset! Hard-working attitude and intelligence of the game.”

A five-star Clemson quarterback target in the 2024 class has set his commitment date.

DJ Lagway of Willis (Texas) High School announced via social media Tuesday night that he will make his commitment on Dec. 7.

Lagway (6-2, 225) reported an offer from Clemson back on May 31 and most recently visited campus for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22. The Tigers also got him on campus for a pair of unofficial visits in April and June.

In September, Lagway announced a top 10 that included Clemson along with Arkansas, LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, Southern Cal, Alabama and Baylor.

It didn’t come as a surprise when he included Swinney’s program as a part of his top schools. He recently went into detail with TCI about why the Tigers are one of his favorites.

“I’d say because of the atmosphere — the Christian-based atmosphere,” Lagway explained. “It’s just amazing. It’s different than any other school. I feel like that’s the reason why it sets Clemson apart.”

RB target ‘loved’ first Clemson visit, ‘looking forward’ to official

The Clemson Insider caught up with a recently offered Clemson running back target ahead of his upcoming official visit to Tiger Town.

Jamarius Haynes, a class of 2023 standout from Handley High School (Roanoke, Ala.), is set to officially visit Clemson for the South Carolina game on Nov. 26.

“I’m looking forward to it a lot,” he told TCI. “I can’t wait for it because I loved Clemson the first time that I came up there. So, I’m looking forward to it.”

The 6-foot, 180-pound senior made his first-ever trip to Clemson for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22, when he picked up an offer from the Tigers.

“I like the environment, just the whole entire environment itself,” he said regarding his experience on the unofficial visit. “The fans stood out a lot to me when we got there. When a bad play happens, none of the fans threw a negative comment. Everybody was all positive.”

Haynes again pointed to the Tiger faithful as what stood out most to him from his time on campus.

“It goes back to the fans,” he said. “When we first got there, you’ve got the fans that’s out and grilling and stuff. All the fans, everybody was having fun, getting ready for the game. Just good intentions everywhere.”

Haynes has been staying in contact with Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller, who traveled to see Haynes play in his Class 4A second-round playoff game against T.R. Miller (Brewton, Ala.) this past Friday – when he put on a show, rushing for 231 yards and scoring four touchdowns in a 27-14 win.

“He’s just basically been telling me to make sure I keep balling and keep academics right, make sure my head’s in the right mind to get ready to play at the next level,” Haynes said of what he’s been hearing from Spiller.

Haynes called his relationship with Spiller a “very close” one, bringing up a moment from their time together during the Syracuse game visit that left a big impression on him and strengthened their bond.

“After the game we took a visit, we had a bunch of good conversations while I was touring the school and everything,” Haynes said. “He took the time out while we were waiting for something to come up. I’ve got a younger brother, he was playing with my brother. So, that built up our connection with each other by a lot, to see that he likes to play around with my little brother and stuff.”

As for Dabo Swinney, Haynes had the chance to catch up with Clemson’s head coach over the phone last week.

“He was just telling me that he really liked me, he watched my film,” Haynes said. “He was happy that I was able to make it up there to the game that I did, and he said he was going to keep in touch with me.”

Haynes, who has received offers from Washington State and Western Kentucky since Clemson offered, is planning right now to sign during the early signing period.

What will the school that lands his signature be getting in him as a running back?

“I feel like I’ll be a great running back,” he said. “If a team loves their scheme for running off speed, I’ll be a great fit. But my ability to make plays happen when nothing’s there, my ability to make plays.”

A Clemson defensive back target in the 2023 class dropped his top three schools via social media Monday evening and included the Tigers.

Bogart (Ga.) North Oconee safety Khalil Barnes has Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma in his top three.

Barnes (6-1, 185) took an official visit to Notre Dame for its game against Clemson on Nov. 5.

He made an unofficial visit to Clemson for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22 and has been slated to officially visit Tiger Town for the South Carolina game on Nov. 26.

Barnes spoke to The Clemson Insider in a follow-up interview following his visit to Death Valley for the Syracuse game. He expressed that between the interactions he had and the environment of Death Valley, Clemson was “gonna be hard to beat.”

“The team was really cool,” he said. “All the guys showed love to recruits and after the game and even when they were down they never panicked and showed a lot of faith in each other, which is cool. They set a standard high for my next visits. Gonna be hard to beat.”

Barnes reopened his recruitment and decommitted from Wake Forest on Oct. 3. Clemson offered him on Sept. 22.

The Insider Report: Recruiting, Jeff Scott and more

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

Update on the headlining visitor for Clemson-Louisville game

The headliner among the visitors that Clemson played host to for the Louisville game this past Saturday was Ryan Montgomery, a standout class of 2025 quarterback from Findlay (Ohio) High School.

“The visit was great overall,” he told The Clemson Insider.

Montgomery is the younger brother of 2023 four-star offensive lineman Luke Montgomery, whom Clemson was among the final suitors for before he committed to Ohio State earlier this year.

Ryan said he spent basically the entire visit with Clemson offensive analyst and former Tiger QB great Tajh Boyd. He also had dinner with several staff members, including offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter, after the game.

Before the game, he was able to meet with Streeter as well as head coach Dabo Swinney.

“They basically just emphasized how much of a priority I am to them, and I think that’s very cool that they’re taking the time to meet with me before this big game and just recruiting me in general,” he said. “Obviously, my interest level in them is very high. The game atmosphere was very electric, very enjoyable.”

What is it that the Tigers like most about the 6-foot-3, 200-pound sophomore as a quarterback?

“Obviously they like my prototypical size, my athleticism, my arm talent, arm strength – basically all the intangibles, really,” he said. “But also that leadership role… just being in command of the huddle at all times.”

Ryan has been to Michigan and Georgia twice each this season, in addition to visiting Ohio State, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Penn State and Clemson. He plans to round out his in-season visits with a trip to Kentucky for its game against Georgia this weekend before going to Ohio State for its rivalry showdown against Michigan the following weekend.

As for when he’ll be back in Tiger Town, Ryan said “for a spring practice for sure.”

“That’ll be the next step in my recruitment, taking some spring practices,” he said. “So, I’ll definitely be back down to Clemson for those.”

Ryan is ranked as the nation’s No. 89 overall prospect in his class regardless of position by Rivals.

Spiller checks out RB target ahead of upcoming official visit

Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller paid a visit this past Friday night to check out a recently offered running back target in the 2023 class.

Handley High School (Roanoke, Ala.)’s Jamarius Haynes put on a show with Spiller in attendance, rushing for 231 yards and scoring four touchdowns to help his team to a win in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Haynes prior to his big game Friday, as he gets set to officially visit Clemson for the South Carolina game on Nov. 26.

“I’m looking forward to it a lot,” he said. “I can’t wait for it because I love Clemson the first time that I came up there. So, I’m looking forward to it.”

Haynes (6-0, 180) made his first-ever trip to Clemson last month as an unofficial visitor for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22, when he picked up an offer from the Tigers.

Reflecting on that experience, he said it was the environment and positive vibes from the fan base that stuck out to him the most. He had plenty of good conversations with Spiller while touring the school, and said the fact Spiller took out to play with his little brother made a big impression on him.

Haynes said he has a “very close relationship” with Spiller, and Haynes had a chance to speak with Swinney by phone last week. According to Haynes, Swinney told him that he watched his film, really likes him, is glad he was able to visit earlier this season and plans to keep in touch.

Haynes, who has received offers from Washington State and Western Kentucky since Clemson offered, is planning right now to sign during the early signing period.

Latest on Jeff Scott

Former Clemson player and offensive coordinator Jeff Scott was let go by South Florida earlier this month. Since his departure, many have wondered if he would end up back on the staff of Swinney at Clemson.  Scott was 1-8 on the season and 4-26 overall as the head coach of the Bulls.

We wanted to pass along the latest information we have on the situation after speaking with a number of sources over the past week.

In the new college landscape with NIL and the transfer portal, having great recruiters on staff is even more important. Scott was one of if not the best for the Tigers during his tenure.

“Jeff Scott was the best recruiter on that staff,” another college coach told The Clemson Insider. “It is a lot harder to recruit at South Florida. When he is recruiting with that Paw on his chest, nobody is better.”

Sources tell TCI that Swinney and Scott have talked about a potential return home, but as of the writing of this report we do not have confirmation that one will take place. We have also been told if Swinney does make a move, that Scott would be back quickly after the regular season. The transition would be expected before the bowl game.

There has been a lot of discussion about the role Scott would play if he returns to Clemson. The good news is the timing for such a move may be perfect, as coaching sources tell TCI that the removal of the countable coaches rule is on the horizon. If passed, this will remove the limit of 10 coaches for a staff. This would give Swinney plenty of flexibility in Scott’s role. There will still be a limit on how many coaches can recruit off campus, and we would expect Scott to be one of those.

If the countable coaching rules are removed, college staffs will be more similar to NFL staffs.

We can also tell you that Scott still has property in the Clemson area.

We will continue to monitor this situation and give you more details as appropriate.

Schools Pushing NIL More Directly

A couple of weeks ago the NCAA clarified some of the rules around name, image and likeness.

One of the clarifications is that schools can now talk about the importance of NIL and ask their fans and boosters to donate to the collectives.

Schools have to be careful about the language they use. They can not ask for donations to be given to a collective for a specific sport or a specific player. They can ask their fans to donate to collectives they name.

A number of head coaches and athletic departments have gotten very active in asking for support of the collectives since this clarification.

Look for Clemson to get more active soon.

Latest Clemson visit made local OL target feel like ‘a priority’

Clemson once again played host to a top local offensive line target this week.

Greenville (S.C.) High School four-star Blake Franks returned to Tiger Town on Tuesday.

It marked Franks’ third visit to Clemson since the start of last month. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound junior in the class of 2024 also made his way to campus for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22 after attending the NC State game on Oct. 1 — his first time witnessing a game at Death Valley in person.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Franks after his latest experience at Clemson this week.

“It was good,” Franks said of the visit. “I really enjoyed being able to talk to the staff one on one. It made me feel like I was a priority.”

During Tuesday’s visit, Franks spent the majority of his time with offensive line coach Thomas Austin but also had the chance to talk with head man Dabo Swinney as well as senior director of recruiting Jordan Sorrells.

“I heard overall their value on faith, family, friends, me as an athlete, and the development I would get there,” Franks said of what he heard from the coaches.

Franks, who received an offer from the Tigers in late July, made the visit with his mother.

“She said she really enjoyed the campus and the staff,” he said.

The overall best part of the visit for Franks personally was being able to take a full campus tour and get a feel for what it’s really like to be a Tiger.

“Just getting to see the campus for the first time and experience the true life of a Clemson Tiger,” he explained.

Franks released a top eight last month featuring Clemson along with South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Miami, Alabama and Florida State.

Where do the Tigers stand with him right now after his latest trip to campus?

“I think they’re a possible top three in my opinion,” he said.

Franks has also been to each of the other schools in his top eight this season.

He’ll be back in Tiger Town for his third gameday visit to Clemson later this month.

“I only have one more visit planned and that’s to Clemson vs. South Carolina (on Nov. 26),” he said, “but I also might go back to South Carolina for the Tennessee game (on Nov. 19).”

Franks said he is hoping to make his college decision in December.

He is rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals, which considers him the No. 4 prospect in the Palmetto State, No. 8 offensive guard nationally and No. 250 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class.

Clemson will play host to a top young quarterback prospect this weekend.

Findlay (Ohio) High School’s Ryan Montgomery — a 6-foot-3, 200-pound sophomore in the class of 2025 — will be a headlining visitor for Saturday’s game vs. Louisville at Death Valley.

Montgomery, a top-100 national recruit in his class, also made a trip to Tiger Town this past summer.

“It was awesome,” Montgomery told The Clemson Insider regarding his Clemson visit. “What was cool was Tajh Boyd was with us the entire time. He’s on staff now at Clemson, so that was really cool to see. The amount of former players that are on staff now at Clemson is just unreal, like it’s the most of any place I’ve ever been to. That speaks measures by itself. The visit itself went really well. We toured around the campus and the facilities and went out to dinner.”

Montgomery is the younger brother of 2023 four-star offensive lineman Luke Montgomery, whom Clemson was among the final suitors for before he verbally pledged to Ohio State earlier this year.

Ryan is ranked as the nation’s No. 89 overall prospect in his class regardless of position by Rivals. He holds offers from Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee and others.

“I’d say I’m more of a prototypical quarterback,” Ryan told TCI when asked to describe himself as a player. “I’d say I’m more of a dropback passer. The one thing I’d say is that I’m a really good leader and my work ethic is second to none.”

Standout Peach State WR staying in touch with Grisham

The Clemson Insider caught up with this standout Peach State receiver that’s on the Tigers’ recruiting radar.

Johns Creek (Ga.) High School’s Kyle Vaka – a 6-foot, 170-pound junior in the 2024 class – has been keeping in contact periodically with Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

“Me and Coach Grisham stay in touch from time to time. I think I texted with him last week,” Vaka told TCI recently. “I texted with him. I let him know I was watching – I think it was the NC State game – so, seeing those guys ball out, and I like to text him and let him know I’ve been watching their receivers and seeing them ball out, sending him some of my tape, and he appreciates it. He encourages me, and I appreciate staying in touch with him.”

Vaka has traveled to Tiger Town a bunch of times. He made his way to campus for a couple of games last season, went to this year’s spring game in April and participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp this past summer for the second year in a row – not to mention a couple of other trips he has made to visit his sister, who actually attends Clemson.

Most recently, Vaka made an unofficial visit to Clemson for the Louisiana Tech game on Sept. 17, and he is looking to return to campus multiple times in the offseason.

“Going to make it up for spring game hopefully,” he said. “Definitely going to be camping there, and I really look forward to my relationship with Clemson and Coach Grisham and how that grows.”

Along with Clemson, Vaka is getting interest from Vanderbilt, SMU, Rice and William & Mary. He visited Vanderbilt in September, went to Rice two weekends ago, SMU this past weekend and plans to see William & Mary and Vanderbilt again over the next couple of weekends.

“I’m just keeping in touch with those schools and putting my explosive plays on film and just controlling what I can control,” he said.

Vaka just wrapped up a strong junior campaign and finished it with a bang on Oct. 28, when he posted seven receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns (75 and 80 yards).

Entering that game, Vaka had tallied 30 catches for 493 yards and three touchdowns on the season while logging 11 explosive plays of 20-plus yards.

Vaka, who also returned punts and kickoffs for his team this season, has been invited to the Georgia Elite Classic, the state’s premier All-Star game.

“The season as a team, it’s been a little bit of a struggle, losing a ton of seniors, a whole new coaching staff came in,” he said. “So, myself, I’m just trying to control what I can control. I’ve been grateful to put a ton of explosive plays on tape.”

Ideally, Vaka would like to have his recruitment wrapped up heading into his senior season next year, but he’s just playing things by ear as the recruiting process progresses.

Right now, his sights are simply set on working as hard as possible this offseason.

“I know I’m going to run track and train as hard as I can, put on muscle and weight and control what I can control in terms of how hard I work,” he said. “I know that God will take care of the rest and the offers and all that will come in due time, and I’m just going to put my head down and work.”

4-star safety, top-100 national recruit has ‘always loved’ Clemson

Clemson recently played host to this highly touted defensive back from the Peach State.

Buford (Ga.) High School four-star safety TyShun White, a top-100 national prospect in the 2024 class, made his first-ever trip to Tiger Town for the Tigers’ game against Syracuse on Oct. 22.

“The visit to Clemson was real good,” White told The Clemson Insider. “I got to see the environment, meet the coaches and got to see how Clemson’s defense plays.”

White, ranked as high as the No. 5 safety and No. 81 overall prospect in his class by Rivals, came away impressed by the environment at Death Valley during what was a top-15 matchup.

“The atmosphere was crazy,” he said. “My family, they really liked the atmosphere also. It was a good atmosphere. The fans, they rushed the field after the game, so that was pretty cool to see that. The crowd was crazy every third down. It’s crazy.”

The 6-foot, 185-pound junior liked what he saw from Clemson’s defense, which shut out Syracuse in the second half en route to the 27-21 win over the Orange.

“I like how their defense plays,” he said. “They play a lot of man coverage. That’s what Coach (Wes) Goodwin was telling me, they play a lot of man coverage. So, it’s good to see that because that’s kind of what we do at my high school now, play a lot of man coverage.”

Speaking of Goodwin, White was able to talk with the Tigers’ defensive coordinator in the locker room after the game and had the chance to sit down and chat a lot with co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn before the game.

White also got to meet head man Dabo Swinney in the locker room after the game.

“Coach Swinney, he’s the GOAT,” White said. “I’ve been looking at Coach Swinney. Before I even got to Clemson, I had already seen the way he coaches and stuff. It’s very relating, the way he celebrates with the team. So, that was really cool to see a head coach doing stuff like that.”

It was the time White spent in the locker room after the game that provided the overall highlight of his visit.

“They were exciting to watch throughout the game, and then the locker room vibe was crazy after the game,” he said, “how they celebrated and how Coach Dabo Swinney celebrated with the team.”

White had been in contact with Clemson prior to the visit, and based on what he’s heard from Conn and other coaches, the Tigers are certainly interested in him.

“They really like the way I play,” he said. “Coach Conn really thinks highly of me, and he really talked highly of me there. So, that was really good to hear.”

White has also been to games this season at Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn and Virginia Tech. Kentucky, North Carolina, Florida and Texas A&M are some schools he expects to check out moving forward.

His lengthy offer list features, among many others, schools like Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.

“Everybody’s pretty even now,” he said of his recruitment. “I probably won’t have anything narrowed down until sometime next year.”

If the Tigers were to join his offer sheet in the future, White would be stoked.

“That would mean a lot,” he said. “I really admire Clemson. I always loved the way Clemson played and the environment that Clemson has. I always watched Clemson, the YouTube channel they have, the players’ vlog and stuff. I watched almost every season of that. Every day, I always watched that when I was in middle school and stuff like that. So if Clemson offered me, that would be crazy, like very exciting. And I’ve been through a lot in the recruiting (process) with Clemson. I’ve always loved Clemson.”
