NFL Draft Grades: Houston Texans’ Will Anderson Jr.

NFL draft expert grades the Houston Texans’ selection of Will Anderson Jr. at No. 3 overall

Saturday marked the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft and with the dust settled it is time to sit back and make our opinions on each team’s draft. After taking C.J. Stroud at No. 2 overall, the Houston Texans traded back up for the third pick to land the best non-QB in the draft, Will Anderson Jr.

Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire recently graded the entire first round of the 2023 draft and gave the Texans a ‘B+’ for their selection of Anderson.

“Anderson has proven all he needed to prove with the Crimson Tide, and he’ll be a Day 1 tone-setter in DeMeco Ryans’ defense. The trade with the Cardinals to move up from 12 to 3 is a rich one, and my only hesitation with an A grade is that the Texans might have gone with a player with more upside, such as Jalen Carter or Tyree Wilson. Still, you can’t argue with the back-to-back picks of C.J. Stroud and Anderson. This is a team looking to define its character with two knockout blows.”

Anderson and Stroud will be the offensive and defensive pieces that the Texans begin to build around for the next few years under first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans. Despite being in his first year, Ryans is highly regarded for the success he had with the 49ers’ defense the past few seasons. However, the team needs a massive revamp and it was crucial to get his core pieces in the first draft.

Anderson and Ryans will have a strong connection from day one, because like Anderson, Ryans also played for the Crimson Tide back in his playing days.

The NFL draft’s first round is a glorious new normal for Black quarterbacks

This is what progress looks like. Flaws and all.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning. Here’s Mike Sykes.

The only appropriate way to start this column is by congratulating Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson. These three Black quarterbacks went No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 in the NFL draft on Thursday, respectively. Of course, you probably knew that already.

I don’t know if we’ve ever seen three Black quarterbacks drafted this high before, but I’m pretty sure we’ve never seen three Black quarterbacks drafted this high before. History says I’m probably right.

I know we’ve come close. The 1999 NFL draft had Donovan McNabb at No. 1, Akili Smith at No. 2 and Dante Culpepper at No. 11. That was great. But that’s not quite this.

The fact that the 1999 draft even played out that way feels like a miracle alone. That certainly wasn’t the norm. That happened during a time when Black quarterbacks were mercilessly picked apart. They were chastised for their lack of leadership, had their acumen constantly questioned and were even asked to switch positions in some cases. Some of those tropes still exist today — just ask Lamar Jackson.

Here’s the thing. To be Black in America has always meant needing to be exceptional, no matter your circumstances.

Growing up, my parents taught me that I had to be twice as good as everyone else twice as often, because, even if you are exceptional, you might not be rewarded for it. So you had to be better than that.

That’s what life is like for me. I’m not an NFL quarterback.

The league’s first starting Black quarterback played for the Denver Broncos in 1968. It took 49 more years for every team to have at least one Black starter at the position in its history. That’s the history Black quarterbacks are up against.

It’s a history that says if you’re anything but perfect, there’s absolutely no way you can do this job. You’re not good enough. And it’s not because you’re not skilled enough or you’re not smart enough. It’s because you don’t look the part. And that’s a hard thing to fight against.

But the thing is for the first time this year it felt like that history didn’t matter. There was no silly “You Choose” Sports Illustrated cover. Young, Stroud and Richardson were undeniable and it wasn’t because they were perfect — they’re actually far from it.

Bryce Young is too small. Anthony Richardson is inaccurate. C.J. Stroud is probably the most balanced among the 3 of them, though there are legitimate questions about how he handles pressure in the pocket.

None of that mattered. These guys were just … it. With their flaws and all. That’s my kind of progress.

NFL draft: 3 quarterbacks go in the top 4

The Minnesota Vikings are in need of a quarterback and their chances of taking one in round one took a large hit early.

The 2023 NFL draft started off with a couple of surprises. Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud ended up going second overall with all the rumors about them passing on a quarterback for a defender. They doubled down in the top three by trading up to third overall for Alabama edge Will Anderson Jr.

With Alabama quarterback Bryce Young going at first overall, seeing Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson go at fourth overall was a tough pill to swallow for the Minnesota Vikings.

They were hoping to go up to select Richardson as all the reports mentioned over the last two days. I had been hearing the same thing from multiple sources.

What does this mean for the Vikings’ draft plan? It likely means a trade-down to pick up extra draft capital. The value in this class is on day two and they can make a big impact on the depth of this team long-term.

NFL draft: Vikings Wire staff predicts Minnesota’s first draft pick

In our final prediction piece of the NFL Draft cycle, Vikings Wire’s staff predicts who the Minnesota Vikings will take with their 1st pick.

The NFL draft is a land of magic and wonder. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah made things interesting last year by not making a single pick where he was originally scheduled to do so. How could he make things interesting this year?

Our staff at Vikings Wire got together and talked about the draft on many levels. In our first piece, we each made one bold prediction for the Vikings on draft weekend. In our second one, we advocated for the one player we want the Vikings to draft. In our third piece, we talked about the one player we don’t want the Vikings to select in the NFL draft. In our fourth piece, our staff predicted the quarterback of the future.

In our final piece, we predicted the Vikings first draft pick in the 2023 NFL draft.
