Texans QB C.J. Stroud credits his mother after big win vs. Colts

One special connection helped center Texans rookie C.J. Stroud in the biggest game of his young career.

INDIANAPOLIS – – Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud has a pregame routine that he dislikes breaking. He walks, stretches, swings a golf club, and takes a couple of pretend jump shots with a basketball before he picks up a football for warmup throws.

Having his headphones on makes it easier to block out all the stadium noises and allows him to focus on what will come once the game begins.

There is only one person he will break that routine for, and that is his mother, Kimberly Stroud, who has been at every big game of C.J.’s career, and there was no way she was going to miss the biggest game of his rookie season with so much on the line.

She wanted to be there. She needed to be there, along with his siblings, to let him know that they were in the fight together. Her from the sidelines and him on the field.

That is why there was no surprise when he stopped his routine after he spotted her behind the ropes on the sidelines during his pregame warmups. As he had done so many times growing up, Stroud ran over to his mom with a massive smile and embraced her. She returned the hug, letting him know that everything would be okay. No matter the game’s outcome, she was there and would be rooting him on from the sidelines.

Knowing that she was in the building gave Stroud all the confidence he needed as he helped lead the Texans back into the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2019, with a 23-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. If the Jacksonville Jaguars lose to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Houston will be crowned AFC South Champions and host a playoff game at NRG Stadium.

“I kept looking at her,” Stroud said after the game. “More times than not, I don’t be finding her. She was so close I could hear her. She prays. Honestly, when I look up and I see her praying, it just gives me a sense of comfort, a sense of, like, my mama is praying for me. It’s got to go good.

“I love my mom to death. She’s so supportive of me. She’s been with me through thick and thin, and I love her to death. My sister as well, my brother, my other brother, Isaiah. I miss him. I love him. Just really all my support staff. Not my support staff. Excuse me. My supportive family, Caleb, my best friends back home, the city of I.E. (Inland Empire California).”

The prayers from Kimberly Stroud may have contained a little added request for success this game for her son, and they were answered early when he found wide receiver Nico Collins on the first play from scrimmage with a 75-yard touchdown pass to give the Texans a 7-3 lead.

“We didn’t think they were going to be in that coverage, but Slow (Bobby Slowik) is a dog, man, Slow is our guy,” Stroud said. “He had a feeling we could hit them up top. Nico (Collins) did a great job creating separation. I tried to do my best to get it out there. Man, it’s cool just to see Nico just ball out. That was a special first play, man. Special.”

Stroud’s heroics weren’t done yet as he saved his best for last. With the game tied at 17 early in the fourth quarter, he knew that his team depended on him to come through significantly if they were going to live to play another week. The Texans’ second overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft has a mantra he lives by: “Pressure is a privilege.”

Houston faced much adversity in the 12-play, 73-yard scoring drive that resulted in a three-yard touchdown run by running back Devin Singletary to give the Texans the lead and the eventual victory. Two times, they needed 20 yards to get a first down to keep the drive alive, and Stroud completed passes to tight end Dalton Shultz and Collins, giving Houston more confidence that they could win the game. He did not have an incompletion, going 7-of-7 for 82 yards on that drive that consisted of over seven minutes.

“I told them before we went out there, I said, this is the most important drive of the year, and the look that I got back from my teammates, man, it was, like, let’s ride, let’s do this thing,” said Stroud, who finished the game with 264 yards passing and two touchdowns. “There was nobody holding their hat down on a previous play or anything like that. It was just like, man, let’s go win this game.

“Let’s do it. Every play, even we moved backwards, I think two or three times when we had two, three penalties, and we still persevered through that. I just think that’s the testimony to the work we put in, the type of guys that we brought into the system, our coaching staff. They called a great game. Just a multitude of our organization just putting it together. I’m just blessed enough to be a part of it.”

As she waited patiently for her son to finish his postgame press conference, Kimberly laughed and smiled with her children. Once Stroud made the corner, she gave him the same motherly embrace that they had shared pregame, but this one was a little tighter, given the adversity he had overcome in his life and finishing his rookie regular season in the NFL helping lead a franchise that had been in shambles the past three years reach the postseason.

“Most of the people who have poured into me as a kid to see me do what I’m doing now, it’s a tremendous blessing,” said Stroud, about the tremendous support he has received throughout his journey to the NFL.

Prescott MVP case could get big boost from Cowboys remaining schedule

Prescott’s been on a tear, but he and the club will have to do more to solicit real MVP considerations. Luckily the tough upcoming schedule offers a cheat code. | From @KDDrummondNFL

Dak Prescott began his professional career with a bang. As a fourth-round pick in 2016, the Mississippi State product was an afterthought to the initial depth chart. He sat fourth entering training camp behind entrenched starter Tony Romo, veteran backup Kellen Moore and the incomparable upside of Jameil Showers.

Yet there Prescott was, lighting up the preseason like no one had done before him and landing in the big chair for a Week 1 contest against the New York Giants. Prescott went on to have an incredible rookie season in a primarily ball-control offense, earning offensive rookie of the year and finishing sixth in MVP voting.

Despite spending several years in the discussion for top-10 quarterbacks, Prescott hasn’t regained that level of accolade since. He’s made just one other Pro Bowl, and that was in 2018. In 2023, Prescott is forcing a rewrite in conventional thinking. He’s in the running for MVP consideration and based on the Cowboys’ upcoming schedule he has a strong chance to continue to climb up the ladder.

Ranking our 9 best rookies at the midway point of the season

Here are our favorite rookies from the 2023 NFL draft class.

The 2023 NFL draft class is proving to be one of the best in recent years in the early going. We have enjoyed watching so many guys, not just first-round picks flourish in their young careers. Here are our favorite nine rookies at the midway point of the season.

10 rookie quarterbacks to start in NFL this season

The NFL will have its 10th rookie starting quarterback of the season this weekend.

On Sunday, the New York Giants plan to start rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito against the Dallas Cowboys. This will be historic in that he will be the 10th quarterback from the 2023 NFL draft to start this season. This is the most since 1950. Here is the full rundown of all the rookie quarterbacks to start this season.

WATCH: Texans QB C.J. Stroud explains moment when Dare Ogunbowale kicked go-ahead field goal

The NFL world revolved around Houston, Texas for a few minutes on Sunday afternoon. Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn went down with an injury during the team’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thrusting the team’s emergency kicker into duty.

That player: former Wisconsin running back Dare Ogunbowale.

What came next was madness. First, the former Badger performed well at kickoffs. Then, the Texans faced a fourth-and-goal from the 12-yard line. They needed a field goal.

And Ogunbowale delivered, becoming the first non-kicker or punter to make a field goal since wide receiver Wes Welker did it in 2004 for the Dolphins.

Texans QB C.J. Stroud spoke with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt on Monday Night Countdown last night and told his side of the story:

Ranking the Week 8 rookie quarterback performances

Which rookie quarterback was the best in Week 8?

Another week down, another week to evaluate the performances of the multiple rookie starting quarterbacks in the league. We once again saw a mixed bag from all the rookies, but also saw some flashes from some newcomers.

Let’s take a look at each rookie and rank their Week 8 performances from best to worst:

Let’s fix this: Re-drafting the 1st round of the 2023 NFL draft at the midway point

Big changes when we go back in time and draft the first round of the 2023 NFL draft all over again.

We are nearing the midway point of the 2023 NFL season and the 2023 rookie class is really starting to show itself. Teams are relying heavily on rookies. But as always, there are players who step up and prove they should have been drafted sooner and others make it clear they might have been drafted too early.

We decided to jump into our time machine and draft the first round of the 2023 NFL draft all over again with all the information we know now.

Puka Nacua still isn’t the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, but should he be?

C.J. Stroud still has much better odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year despite Puka Nacua’s historic start and league-high 58 catches

There isn’t a player in the NFL with more receptions than Puka Nacua this season. Only two players have more receiving yards, and no one has been targeted more than the Rams rookie.

Nacua has gotten off to one of the best starts ever by a rookie, regardless of position or draft slot. He and Ja’Marr Chase are the only rookies in NFL history with 700-plus receiving yards in their first seven games, with Nacua putting up 752 through Week 7 this season; Chase had 754.

All this makes you wonder how it’s possible that Nacua isn’t the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. According to BetMGM, that honor goes to Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who’s undoubtedly having a fantastic season of his own. But has Stroud really been the better rookie than Nacua? Statistically, no. And it’s not close.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

At -190 to win the award, Stroud has an implied probability of 65.5% to take home Offensive Rookie of the Year. Nacua is +300 to win it, giving him an implied probability of only 25%. The next-closest player after Stroud and Nacua is Jordan Addison at +900, so it’s looking like somewhat of a two-man race after seven weeks – though that can obviously change quickly.

Back to the Rams’ stud receiver, he’s the only rookie in NFL history with at least 50 catches and 600 yards in his first seven games. Beyond just rookies, his 58 receptions are tied for the seventh-most ever by a player in his first seven games of a season, and his 752 yards are the 21st-most in that span.

Again, Stroud is having a great season, throwing for 1,660 yards and nine touchdowns in just six games, leading the NFL with an interception rate of only 0.5%. His 13.1 yards per completion also lead the league, and he holds the record for the most pass attempts (177) to start a career without an interception.

What might be even more impressive is that the Texans are 3-3, considering they’re in the midst of a rebuild and led by a rookie head coach, DeMeco Ryans. If the Texans were 0-6 right now but Stroud was still putting up great numbers, would he still be the favorite? Maybe, but there’s no way the gap would be as big as it is right now.

Like Offensive Player of the Year, Offensive Rookie of the Year shouldn’t be about wins and losses. It should be about the most productive rookie in the league. Through seven weeks, that’s been Nacua. And he’s on a ridiculous pace: 141 catches and 1,825 yards.

There’s one player in NFL history who has put up at least 140 catches and 1,800 yards: Cooper Kupp in 2021 when he won Offensive Player of the Year. You’re telling me if Nacua finishes with a similar stat line, he won’t win Rookie of the Year? Stroud would have to put up some outstanding numbers to hold off Nacua, if so.

There’s a long way to go before this award is decided, but Nacua should at least be even with Stroud for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He has better than a 25% chance to win it based on the numbers he’s posted.

Texans land top defensive tackle in new 5-round mock draft

Check out this new Texans five-round mock draft update.

The Houston Texans appear to be a team building back in a hurry thanks to the addition of quarterback CJ Stroud. As we approached this 2024 NFL mock draft, we did so with an eye squarely on not only bolstering the physicality of the defense but also getting Stroud some weapons on offense. We were able to succeed at both and add developmental players on the offensive line with excellent upside and a tackling machine at inside linebacker.

CJ Stroud, Baker Mayfield, the Bills’ unrelenting pressure and the best of Week 4

Baker Mayfield’s improvement is stunning. Brandon Aiyuk is making himself a whoooolllle lot of money.

Week 4 was a week of clarification.

The Dallas Cowboys reminded us that Mac Jones is not a serious NFL quarterback. The Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns were reminded their mediocre starters are a significant upgrade from the rookie passers on their benches. The Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears played a game that made fans of neither team happy.

But in the middle of this standard-issue Sunday shame was another round of reasons to believe. The Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans all had fairly different expectations for 2023, but each franchise shined in its own way before opening the month of October with a victory.

Let’s talk about them. These are the four things I liked most about Week 4.
