Bill Belichick acknowledged Colts LB Shaq Leonard called out offensive plays in Sunday’s game

Patriots players and coach Bill Belichick believe Shaq Leonard was tipping plays on Sunday

It’s one thing to be fast in figuring out an offensive play call as a defender, but it’s something else entirely to be so fast that the defender reacts before the play ever even gets a chance to develop.

Such was seemingly the case for Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaq Leonard against the New England Patriots offense on Sunday.

Leonard appeared like he had the answers before some plays had an opportunity to develop. According to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, Patriots players believe Leonard was calling out offensive plays, especially when it came to “screens” and “zone runs.”

Belichick seemed to agree with that belief. He also claimed to have seen something similar from New York Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley.

Belichick complimented both Leonard and Mosley on being great defensive players that probably benefitted from a lot of film studying.

But as he acknowledges, the Patriots are going to have to be a bit more unpredictable in their offensive play-calling to keep opponents from catching on to tendencies.

“That’s what good defensive players do,” Belichick said, per Callahan. “They anticipate things, and they’re able to sometimes get a read on what they think is going to happen. They’re not always right, but sometimes they are, and they can certainly make you look bad offensively. But as an offense, you always want to be balanced and try not to give things away to the point where you don’t have something complementary that goes with them. So that’s kind of the game within the game there.”

The fact that both the Jets and Colts were able to figure it out, particularly with the Patriots rematching the Jets in Week 11, means they need to work fast at finding a solution to what has quickly become a major offensive problem.

This is just one of many examples where the team is going to have to rally around struggling offensive play-caller Matt Patricia to right the ship.

Zach Wilson, CJ Mosley, Justin Hardee voted as captains

Wilson, Mosley and Hardee will lead the charge for the Jets this season. Who would get your vote for the 4th captain?

The Jets’ players voted Monday for three captains for the 2022 season with the first game just six days away against the Baltimore Ravens.

Quarterback Zach Wilson was voted as the offensive captain, linebacker CJ Mosley for the defense and cornerback Justin Hardee for special teams. The coaches will vote for a fourth captain before each game.

The trio of captains this year are no strangers to wearing the “C” on their chests. All three were captains in 2021 and Mosley was also a captain in 2019 before suffering an injury in the season-opener against the Bills.

Put yourself in the coaching staff’s shoes for a moment. Who would you vote as the fourth captain?

Jets create cap room, restructure C.J. Mosley’s contract

The New York Jets create about $12 million in cap space by converting most of C.J. Mosley’s base salary into a signing bonus.

The Jets needed a little breathing room with their salary cap situation and were able to accomplish that by restructuring the contract of linebacker C.J. Mosley.

Per Field Yates of ESPN, the Jets converted $14.88 million of Mosley’s $16 million base salary into a signing bonus and also added two void years to his contract. As a result, the Jets saved about $12 million in cap space.

Mosley’s cap number for 2022 is $5.6 million dollars. His cap numbers for 2023 and 2024 rise to about $21.5 million and he will leave about $6 million in dead money in 2025 (if he plays out his contract).

As Connor Hughes of SNY notes, $17.5 million of Mosley’s base salary in 2023 is non-guaranteed. If the Jets were to move on, they’d save about $6.5 million in cap space but leave about $15 million in dead money.

The interesting note here too is that if the Jets cut Mosley next offseason, if he signed with another team for more than $1.5 million, that difference would be cap relief for the Jets due to the offset language in Mosley’s contract.

Three former Alabama players now considered ‘most overrated’ members of their NFL teams

Three Tide players are listed as the most overrated on their respective teams

Recently, DraftWire listed every NFL team’s most overrated player heading into 2022. Needless to say, this isn’t a list that players want to find themselves on, and unfortunately, three former Crimson Tide members made the list this year.

Overrated doesn’t mean that they aren’t good players or aren’t worthy of starting, just that they might be praised more than deserved. The three Alabama players who made the list are Eddie Jackson of the Chicago Bears, C.J. Mosley of the New York Jets and Ryan Kelly of the Indianapolis Colts.

Continue reading to see why these players are considered the most overrated on their team.

First … Eddie Jackson

Every NFL team’s most overrated player heading into 2022

Every NFL team’s most overrated player heading into 2022:

The NFL has no shortage of talent, including a budding group of superstars and undervalued players who don’t get the recognition they deserve. But there are also plenty of players who are overvalued.

After looking at every team’s most underrated player, it’s time to look at the other side of the coin with the overrated players in the NFL.

Overrated doesn’t necessarily mean bad. It just means that these players aren’t living up to the hype, however fair or unfair it may be. For some, they’re underperforming in regards to their contract. For others, they’re not necessarily meeting the high expectations thrust upon them.

Our NFL Wire editors identified the most overrated player for each team heading into the 2022 season, explaining why they’re not exactly living up to hype:

C.J. Mosley: Jets making playoffs is ‘realistic goal’ in 2022

C.J. Mosley knows the postseason is within reach for the Jets in 2022

The New York Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, the longest postseason drought in the NFL – and it’s not particularly close. The team with the second-longest drought, the Denver Broncos, have gone six years without a postseason appearance, five fewer years than the Jets.

But linebacker C.J. Mosley has his sights set on ending that 11-year dry spell. He thinks making the playoffs is a legitimate goal for the Jets in 2022.

“I’m really expecting playoffs or bust,” Mosley told Mark Inabinett of AL.com. “Obviously, that’s my goal every year, but I think it’s something that’s a realistic goal for our entire team and our coaches.”

The closest the Jets came to the postseason was in 2015 when they finished 10-6 – their only season with a winning record since going 11-5 in 2010. However, in the last six years, they haven’t won more than seven games in a single season and won just six total in the last two years combined.

The Bills figure to win the AFC East, so the Jets will most likely need to make the postseason as a wild card team. That won’t be easy either, especially with how many teams in the AFC improved this offseason.

CBS Sports: Jets should still upgrade at linebacker before 2022

Do the #Jets still have a need at LB?

CBS Sports thinks the New York Jets still need to add to their linebacker position before the 2022 NFL season begins. Naming a remaining “need” for every team in the league as the offseason rolls on, that position was the selection for New York.

The outlet makes a convincing point.

The Jets are heavily depending upon CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams in the middle.

Williams has set the bar high for himself already this year by saying he’ll make the Pro Bowl. Mosley also expressed confidence in their tandem moving forward.

Saying and doing are two different things.

However, the other issue to look out for is in the middle of the defensive line. Mosley did shine at times, notching 12 tackles for loss against the run in 2021 according to Pro Football Focus. But New York did not re-sign their best run defender on the defensive front in Foley Fatukasi.

Will that cause problems for the Jets and their linebackers?

CBS Sports predicts maybe. But the team can prove otherwise.

Here’s how the outlet broke down the Jets’ linebackers:

Few teams did as much to upgrade their roster this offseason as the New York Jets. They upgraded at edge rusher, cornerback, safety, wide receiver, running back and tight end. The one spot that was hardly addressed is one valuable in Robert Saleh’s defense, but widely considered insignificant — linebacker. San Francisco’s defense corralled opposing offenses with a wide 9 front because they had talented players like Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw to handle all that was filtered inside. New York is relying upon a converted safety (Hamsah Nasirildeen), Jaguar cast-off (Quincy Williams) and the once highly-regarded C.J. Mosley to fulfill those same obligations.

4 Jets bounce-back candidates for 2022

4 #Jets bounce-back candidates for 2022:

The hope for the New York Jets moving forward has much to do with a youth movement. If the team can get some promising signs there, feelings in New York will be much more upbeat next year.

Some bouncing back could help, too.

Here are four Jets bounce-back candidates for 2022:

6 things the Jets must improve at in 2022

The Jets need to fix these parts of their game if they want to compete next season.

The Jets need to do a lot of work before the 2022 season.

Between various needs across the roster, the continued development of Zach Wilson, and contractual decisions to be made, the Jes could look very different after this offseason. Just look at how the Super Bowl-bound Bengals transformed their team.

But in order to actually improve their win total, the Jets will need to improve a couple of key parts of their game. Here are six ways Gang Green must improve in 2022.
