Notre Dame football quarterback commit CJ Carr will enroll very soon

Carr will be on campus much sooner that you think

It has become commonplace for recruits to graduate early and enroll into their respective school, but [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] commit [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] is taking a bit of a different route.

Typically a player who is coming into their college program early enrolls in time for spring practice, but Carr isn’t going to take that route. According to an interview with 247Sports Tom Loy, the top ranked Irish commit of the 2024 class will be with the team on December 16th, in time for bowl practice.

The head start to Carr’s career could play dividends down the road, especially considering there is going to be a quarterback competition with Sam Hartman graduating.

Another aspect of Carr starting to practice early with the Irish is that he will not be playing in any of the high school All-Star games, but clearly getting a head start on his Notre Dame career is much more important.

Notre Dame football offers 2026 Florida quarterback

The Irish are already focused on 2026 quarterback recruiting

If there has one significant recruiting difference for [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] in the [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] era, it’s at quarterback.

The Irish are starting to build a room that looks like one of the best in the country, and it all starts with recruiting. During Freeman’s first “cycle” they signed [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag], who is currently that backup to [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag]. Last year it was [autotag]Kenny Minchey[/autotag], a player who has already seen time on the field very early into his career.

The 2024 class has [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] committed while the 2025 class has [autotag]Deuce Knight[/autotag]. The focus is now on 2025 and the Irish offered Florida’s [autotag]Will Griffin[/autotag] on Wednesday.

The 6-foot, 3-inch and 215-pound quarterback is ranked as the No. 5 player at his position and 62nd nationally by the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The competition for Griffin’s signature will be fierce, but Notre Dame has now entered the picture.

Marcus Freeman isn’t sure who will quarterback Notre Dame football next year

An interesting answer from Freeman on the who the Irish will turn to at quarterback next year

Two of the last three seasons, [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] has used the transfer portal to find its starting quarterback.

Wisconsin transfer [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag] and Wake Forest transfer and current Irish quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] clearly were great options, but each of them only had one season in South Bend. Naturally, questions about who will take over next year will happen.

Irish head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] was asked that question and his answer was fairly simple, he’s not sure. Multiple in-house options like [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag] and [autotag]Kenny Minchey[/autotag], with [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] on the way, give Notre Dame credence not to look for a new starter in the portal. That doesn’t mean that Freeman won’t consider it.

It’s an answer that many would question, but considering the lack of experience currently behind Hartman, going into the portal to find another potential starter isn’t the worst idea. At this current moment, we have no idea which quarterbacks will look to move on, but Freeman keeping his options open is a very smart idea.

Notre Dame football trending to add 4-star 2025 California quarterback

The Irish are looking to add another solid quarterback prospects

If there is one specific aspect of [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag]’s recruiting that has seen a major uptick since [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] took over, it’s at quarterback.

The second-year head coach tried to work with what was on campus in 2022, but it clearly didn’t work. Freeman went to the portal to add [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] while the ‘23 recruiting class added four-star [autotag]Kenny Minchey[/autotag]. He followed with another four-star, [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag], in the 2024 class. Now the focus has turned to the next class.

California’s [autotag]Bear Bachmeier[/autotag] is the staff’s top target, and it looks like his recruitment is going according to plan. Recently, Mike Singer of On3 logged a prediction for the Irish to land the 6-foot, 2-inch, 225-pound quarterback.

Bachmeier is ranked ninth among quarterbacks and 146th overall in the 2025 class on the 247Sports composite.

Watch: Notre Dame quarterback commit CJ Carr shines in season debut

Carr had a great season opener

For [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] to take the next step into the elite of the college football world, they’ll need consistently good quarterback play.

Sam Hartman will provide that this year, but it has been many years since the Irish have had a true different maker at the position. After the transfer leaves, the question for Notre Dame will be who replaces him. 2024 commit [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] will have an opportunity to be in the mix right away.

Why? Well, he’s one of the nation’s top players, ranking as the No. 5 quarterback and 36th overall player on the 247Sports composite. Carr has the film to back it up and didn’t disappoint in his final high school season opener.

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 195-pound signal caller led his Saline, Michigan, team to a 42-3 victory. Check out some of Carr’s highlights from the rout below.

Notre Dame 2024 commits share their ‘Think Big’ videos and graphics

These are all excellent #ThinkBig

It has been a pretty big day for [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] and their social media team.

Not only was the Irish’s green jerseys unveiled on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, but multiple 2024 commitments shared videos and graphics with the hashtag of ThinkBig, the slogan of their class.

Was is unique about this campaign is that none of the videos shared were the same, each of the individually crafted for each commitment. It’s a job well done by the Notre Dame social media staff, as they have been extremely busy the past few weeks getting all of this prepared to roll out at the same time.

Take a look below at some of the videos and graphics shared by the Irish verbal commitments.

Does Rivals believe Notre Dame will sign a 5-star in 2024 class?

Will the Irish sign a 5-star in 2024?

For a period of time, it seemed like [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] would end up signing multiple 5-star prospects in their 2024 class.

Quarterback CJ Carr and wide receiver Cam Williams held the status at times, but following the summer re-ranking period, both of them fell slightly outside of the range.

Rivals recently looked at if the Irish could ultimately sign a 5-star this cycle, as Clint Cosgrove and Charleston’s Bowles played fact or fiction with the topic.

Both of them chose that it is a fact, for the exact same reason. Cosgrove and Bowles believe that Carr eventually earns the 5th star back.

Another interesting nugget from this article was they Bowles breached the subject of the Irish adding a 5-star prospect from outside the current commits, specifically Justin Scott. Unfortunately, he believes that Scott will stick with his commitment to Ohio State.

Notre Dame football: Top 25 quarterback recruits since 2000

Four in the top 16 since the 2020 recruiting class. Not bad by Tommy Rees on his way out the door.

It was once said the highest pressure position in all of college football was playing quarterback at Notre Dame.  Sure, when [autotag]Beano Cook[/autotag] puts the pressure on you to win multiple Heisman’s and national championships, it’s nearly impossible to dispute the claim.

Times have changed a bit in recent decades and although the pressure on Notre Dame quarterbacks might not be the same as it was during the peak of the [autotag]Lou Holtz[/autotag] era for [autotag]Ron Powlus[/autotag], but pressure comes with playing for the Irish still, no doubt.

Quarterback has also been perhaps the biggest difference between the elites and Notre Dame in recent years in the sense that the elites have an elite signal caller while the Irish put out good but far from elite players at the position recently.

If we look back since the year 2000 there have been some fantastic quarterbacks to wear blue and gold.  Which of those came in with the biggest hype in terms of recruiting rankings?  And which ones soared beyond the little hype the may have been surrounded by?

And which didn’t even play quarterback in college?

Here are the top 25 Notre Dame quarterback recruits since 2000 according to the 247Sports composite ranking system.

Watch: Notre Dame quarterback commit CJ Carr has impressive anticipatory skills

Can’t wait to see Carr in action for the Irish

As a quarterback, it’s not just about throwing to open receivers, it’s about anticipating receivers getting open and [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] commit [autotag]CJ Carr[/autotag] has shown those qualities.

In a recent tweet by Reel Analytics, an AI-powered sports tech and data company that analyzes video which measures athleticism, they highlighted a certain skill set of Carr’s.

The 6-foot, 3-inch and 195 pound Carr, who is ranked as the 6th best quarterback and 47th overall player in the country by the 247Sports composite, showed on tape elite instincts for seeing a receiver that hasn’t gotten open yet.

It’s an extremely important trait to possess and Irish fans should be extremely excited about that part of the skill set that Carr possesses. Check out the video below as Reel Analytics breaks down Carr’s anticipatory throwing skills.
