Browns hiring Giants assistant Christian Jones as their tight end coach

The Cleveland Browns are hiring New York Giants assistant quarterback coach Christian Jones as their next tight ends coach.

New York Giants assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones had multiple interviews this offseason, including visits with both the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks.

Now he’s on his way out of East Rutherford.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that the Browns are hiring Jones to become their next tight ends coach.

Jones joined the Giants as an offensive assistant in 2022 but spent each of the previous two seasons as the assistant quarterbacks coach under Shea Tierney. He worked hand-in-hand with Daniel Jones, as well as Drew Lock, Tyrod Taylor, Tommy DeVito, Tim Boyle, and others over that span.

Before joining the Giants, Jones broke into coaching with Northwestern, his alma mater, as an offensive assistant with the offensive line in 2017. He joined Texas as an offensive graduate assistant in 2018 before finally making his way to the NFL in 2019, where he linked up with current Browns coach Kevin Stefanski.

At the time, Stefanski was the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings. Jones served as the offensive quality control coach.

From 2020 through 2021, Jones held the position of Vikings’ assistant wide receivers coach.

Browns hire new TE coach after promoting Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator

The Browns have a new tight ends coach

The Cleveland Browns promoted their old tight ends coach Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator and hired Christian Jones to replace him.

Jones, who interviewed for the job of Cleveland’s quarterbacks coach before the team internally promoted Bill Musgrave, has a previous history with head coach Kevin Stefanski. Jones and Stefanski overlapped with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 where he served as an offensive quality coach.

Most recently, Jones served as the assistant quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants for the last two seasons. Historically, the Browns have always hired a quarterback-centric coach to coach the tight ends. With a typical room of just four players, the tight ends coaches have also spent time with the quarterbacks under Stefanski.

This was the case with Rees, TC McCartney before him (who went on to coach quarterbacks in 2024 under former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt), and Drew Petzing (now the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator) before him.

Expect Jones to influence with both the tight ends and quarterbacks.

Seahawks to interview Giants assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones

The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to interview with New York Giants assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones.

The New York Giants were an embarrassment in 2024, finishing with a 3-14 record while establishing themselves as an NFL laughingstock. Yet somehow, executives and members of the coaching staff continue to draw interest.

Having already interviewed with the Cleveland Browns, assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones is now scheduled for a meeting with the Seattle Seahawks for their vacant QB coach position.

Browns interview former Stefanksi assistant for the quarterback coaching job

The Cleveland Browns have interviewed New York Giants assistant quarterback coach Christian Jones for the quarterback coach role.

The Cleveland Browns have interviewed New York Giants assistant quarterback coach Christian Jones, according to Tom Pelissero.

The Browns have not had a dedicated quarterback coach under Kevin Stefanski. The role has been filled by whomever the offensive coordinator is with assistant quarterback coach Ashton Grant helping out.

Jones is an intelligent and experienced coach. He started his NFL career under Stefanski with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019. In 2020, the Vikings promoted Jones to assistant wide receivers coach. The Vikings fired head coach Mike Zimmer in 2022 and let Jones and the rest of the staff go.

Jones was hired by the Giants in 2022 and has spent the previous three seasons underneath Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka. The two coaches are well respected across the league for their offensive systems. Jones may be the perfect candidate for a Browns’ team trying to remain true to Stefanski’s system while evolving to meet the demands of the current league.

A dedicated quarterback coach would be a step forward for the Browns. The role would allow the Browns to free up offensive coordinator Tommy Rees’ time to get him involved in every room instead of staying with the quarterbacks. The team must do everything possible to improve from an awful 2024 campaign.

Browns interview Giants assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones

The Cleveland Browns have completed an interview with New York Giants assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones.

Although the New York Giants finished a miserable 3-14 in 2024, their front office and coaching staff continue to draw significant offseason interest around the league.

The latest Giants staff member to land an outside interview is assistant quarterbacks coach Christian Jones, who met with the Cleveland Browns on Thursday.

Cardinals could have 2 rookies on starting OL in season finale

Kelvin Beachum’s knee injury could open the door for fifth-round pick Christian Jones, who made his debut in Week 17, to start in Week 18.

The Arizona Cardinals have had to deal with a number of injuries on the offensive line. Three starters — left tackle Paris Johnson, right tackle Jonah Williams and right guard Will Hernandez — are on injured reserve.

Rookie Isaiah Adams has been starting at right guard for several weeks. Another rookie might be starting in Week 18 because of another injury.

Kelvin Beachum, now the starting left tackle, missed Thursday’s practice with a knee injury. That could open the door for fifth-round pick Christian Jones. Jones was active for the first time last week and played nine total snaps, three as a tackle eligible and three at right tackle, coming in for a series.

The two starting tackles could end up being Jackson Barton, currently the starting right tackle and Jones. The question is whether Jones would play the left side or if Barton would move over so Jones could play right tackle.

The final injury report will come out Friday afternoon, so we will know more about Beachum’s availability.

But in the final game of the season, the Cardinals might have two rookies (Jones and Adams) and a player with two career starts (Barton) protecting quarterback Kyler Murray.

That’s not exactly what anyone would have hoped to see when the season began.

Huskers signee wins top high school linebacker award

Christian Jones is taking home some hardware.

2024 Nebraska football signee Christian Jones won the Butkus Award on Monday, per multiple media reports. The award is given to the nation’s top high school linebacker.

He had 96 tackles with 16 tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions for the Omaha Westside Warriors this fall.

Jones is part of a talented 2025 Nebraska football linebacker recruiting class that includes Dawson Meritt. Jones officially committed to the program on September 9 and is the fourth-highest-rated player in the 2025 recruiting class. He was also the top player in the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Jones figures to be a staple on the Huskers defense in the coming seasons. The program set out to find linebacker depth in this class, and they were able to get it with Jones. He could have a chance to see the field in short order, as Nebraska looks for defensive anchors of the future.

Top in-state recruit commits to Nebraska

For the third straight year the Huskers land the state’s top prospect.

The top recruit in the state of Nebraska for 2025 committed to the Cornhuskers on Monday night. Christian Jones is a four-star linebacker for Omaha Westside High School.

Jones becomes the 19th commitment to the class of 2025. His commitment moves Nebraska’s class to just outside the top 25 at No. 26 overall, according to 247Sports.

Last season, he had 69 tackles, 14 for loss and scored two defensive touchdowns. On offense, he recorded 20 receptions for 500 yards and nine touchdowns.

Jones was recently selected as a 2025 Polynesian Bowl All-Star. Quarterback Dylan Raiola, newly converted wide receiver Carter Nelson and offensive lineman Preston Taumua participated in the 2024 edition of the game.

The Polynesian Bowl will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, at Kunuiakea Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

His commitment marks the third straight year the Huskers have signed the top player in the state. In 2022, the Huskers signed wide receiver Malachi Coleman, and in 2023, they signed tight end Carter Nelson.

Huskers LB target Christian Jones sees coaching staff’s vision

Christian Jones is a four-star linebacker in the 2025 class.

A class of 2025 linebacker is planning a visit to Lincoln this weekend. Nebraska target Christian Jones will be in town for next weekend’s big game against Colorado. Jones is impressed with what Nebraska brings to the table and spoke to On3’s Steve Wilfong (subscription required) about his most recent visit.

Jones has been high on Nebraska’s priority list for quite some time now. He is the 21st overall linebacker in the 2025 class and the top player in his class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Husker247’s Brian Christopherson recently predicted that he would commit to Nebraska.

In the meantime, he clearly understands the message the Nebraska football coaching staff is trying to convey.

“They want the best players in the state to come play for Nebraska. That’s the big message.”

Getting Jones on campus for the Colorado game is certainly a positive sign. He has been to campus multiple times over the last year, and his recruitment is still very much open.

4 Cardinals injuries that could impact roster decisions

Roster decisions are coming soon and injuries could impact those decisions.

The Arizona Cardinals played their final preseason game on Sunday, losing 38-12 to the Denver Broncos. They have until Tuesday afternoon to cut the roster down to 53 players. Some players suffered some injuries on Sunday that will impact those roster decisions.

Why?

Players with injuries are protected. You can’t trade or cut an injured player, unless he is waived with an injury designation, which causes him to land on injured reserve if not claimed.

For a player who was going to get cut, it means continuing to get paid.

Some of the injuries could impact the 53-man roster.

QB Desmond Ridder (concussion)

This is the most impactful situation because he is in concussion protocol. Ridder might get cut but can’t be while in the protocol. Clayton Tune appears to have beat out Ridder for the backup QB job, but if Ridder has not cleared concussion protocol by Tuesday, he will have to remain on the roster or be placed on injured reserve.

OL Christian Jones (leg)

Jones got hurt on the same play when Ridder got hit. Jones had to be carted to the locker room. He wasn’t expected to make the roster, but had they preferred to have him on the practice squad, he needs to be healthy. He might land on injured reserve and miss the year.

CB Elijah Jones (ankle)

Jones seemed like a lock for the roster because he was a third-round pick. But if they keep him on the roster, they will need to keep six cornerbacks.

RB Tony Jones Jr. (shoulder)

Jones probably wasn’t making the roster but did spend much of last season on the practice squad. If he isn’t cleared by Tuesday, he won’t be able to be on the practice squad.
