Blue Coats big man Christ Koumadje signs with Spanish team Estudiantes

Delaware Blue Coats big man Christ Koumadje has signed a deal with Estudiantes in Spain.

Now is the time of year where players will make the right decisions for themselves and their future as the 2020-21 season remains cloudy due to scheduling and things of that nature.

Somebody like Christ Koumadje, who had a terrific season for the Philadelphia 76ers G Leagie affiliate Delaware Blue Coats, will want to take advantage of his 2019-20 season and go elsehwere. He was named to the 2020 G League Defensive Player of the Year and he was also named to the G League All-Defensive Team.

The 7-foot-3 big man averaged 11.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game and he has since turned that into a deal in Spain with Movistar Estudiantes. The Blue Coats wished him luck in his future on Twitter.

Koumadje has been a good story so far as he went undrafted out of Florida State and he even played in a few preseason games for the Sixers before going down to Delaware. [lawrence-related id=37881,37878,37874]

Delaware Blue Coats rookie center Christ Koumadje on Wednesday was named the 2019-20 NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced.

Koumadje recorded two triple-doubles this season with points, rebounds and blocks and tied the mark for most rebounds in a game by an individual player at 24. He also tallied a G League single-game-high with 12 blocks against the Erie BayHawks.

Canton Charge guard-forward Sir’Dominic Pointer and Westchester Knicks forward Kenny Wooten finished second and third, respectively, in voting for the 2019-20 NBA G League Defensive Player of the Year Award.

On June 4, the G League announced the 2019-20 season was officially canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The season was suspended indefinitely on March 12 and the expectation around the league was the season would eventually be canceled.

Blue Coats rookie big man Christ Koumadje wins 2020 G League DPOY

Delaware Blue Coats big man Christ Koumadje earns G League Defensive Player of the Year honors for 2020.

When the Philadelphia 76ers brought in undrafted 7-foot-3 rookie Christ Koumadje from Florida State, there was some hope that he can turn out to be a solid rim protector in the future. His first season in the G League with the Delaware Blue Coats confirmed that thought.

On Wednesday morning, Koumadje was named the G League Defensive Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season. The big man averaged a G League best 4.0 blocks per game and his 133 total blocks also led the league. He also pulled down 10.9 rebounds per game in 26.4 minutes per in 33 games played this season. He even had multiple games where he recorded 10+ blocks in a game.

Koumadje still has a long way to go before making it to the NBA, but if his first season in Delaware is any indication, he is a guy who could eventually become an elite rim protector. Considering the Sixers could use a guy like him at some point, one would think that he could earn himself a two-way contract soon. [lawrence-related id=33169,33162,33155]

Ben Simmons helped Christ Koumadje with a pair of shoes in high school

Philadelphia 76ers guard Ben Simmons helped Christ Koumadje with a pair of shoes in high school.

Christ Koumadje came to America from the country of Chad after he was recruited by Montverde Academy in Florida to play basketball. He hadn’t picked up a basketball until he was 15-years old after playing soccer for much of his life and he didn’t have the correct pair of sneakers.

Luckily for him, he had a teammate who was looking out for him.

Current Philadelphia 76ers All-Star guard Ben Simmons also attended Montverde and the two of them were teammates, now teammates in the Sixers organization, and he hooked Koumadje up with a pair of sneakers.

Koumadje said in an interview with Aaron Bracy of Bracy Sports Media:

I came in with one of my friends from the Congo and we didn’t have normal basketball shoes. So, Ben hooked us up with a couple of shoes. That time I was wearing a 16 so that was clutch when he came in.

The 7-foot-3 Koumadje has spent the season in the G League with the team’s affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, and he averaged 11.3 points and 10.9 rebounds while also averaging 4.0 blocks per game. He spent training camp and the preseason with the Sixers before the team sent him down to Delaware for the season. [lawrence-related id=29741,29734,29726]

Ranking the 30 best players of the 2019-20 NBA G League season

With the NBA G League season likely to be canceled soon, Rookie Wire took a look at the best players to suit up this year.

As the NBA braces for a lengthy hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the growing belief around the league is that the G League season will soon be canceled.

The G League regular season was set to conclude on March 28 and the decision to end play is likely an easy one to make given the financial burden it places on organizations. While the season will soon be canceled, all G League players will be paid through the end of the year.

The NBA itself is preparing for the possibility of returning to play in mid-to-late June as the best-case scenario after the CDC recommended on Sunday that all events with 50 or more people be canceled for two months to help slow the spread of the virus.

With the G League likely set to be canceled, Rookie Wire decided to take a look at the best players to suit up this season as there have been some spectacular performances from around the league.

Players must have appeared in at least 20 games to be considered. Stats were used from the NBA G League, Basketball-Reference and RealGM.

30. Donta Hall, Grand Rapids Drive

Hall, who finished second in double-doubles among all players with 22, emerged as a strong post player with the Drive this season. He was named to the 2019-20 Midseason All-NBA G League Team and was solid all season long in his first year as a professional.

29. Christ Koumadje, Delaware Blue Coats

The 7-foot-4 center led the G League in blocks with four per game and was seventh in rebounding. He recorded two triple-doubles this season with points, rebounds and blocks and tied the mark for most rebounds in a game by an individual player at 24.

28. Kyle Alexander, Sioux Falls Skyforce

Alexander quickly became one of the best big men in the league this season and his play resulted in a two-way contract from the Miami Heat. He finished fifth in blocks and 14th in rebounding with the Skyforce to cap a productive first year.

27. Eric Mika, Stockton Kings

The former BYU product placed 29th in scoring among all players and second in rebounding. Mika recorded 16 double-doubles and tied the G League season-high of 24 rebounds by an individual player. He eventually earned a 10-day contract from the Kings in February but was not signed to a second one.

26. Paul Watson, Raptors 905

Watson was named to the 2019-20 Midseason All-NBA G League Team and continued his strong play for the rest of the season. Watson scored in double figures in each of his 30 games played in the G League and eventually earned a two-way contract from the Toronto Raptors.

Sixers’ Marial Shayok, Christ Koumadje lead Blue Coats to road win

Philadelphia 76ers rookie Marial Shayok led the Delaware Blue Coats to a win.

While the Philadelphia 76ers continue to work on the basketball court to continue and grow their team, their younger players are down in the G League putting in the work. The team’s affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, was on the road in Canada taking on Raptors 905 and they squeaked out a 114-107 win.

Delaware big man Christ Koumadje had 19 points and 10 rebounds with five blocks and Xavier Munford scored 19 for the Blue Coats while rookie Marial Shayok had 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Second-year man Zhaire Smith returned and he had 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists as he continues to work his way back into the NBA conversation.

One highlight play for the Sixers was Smith flying high for an alley-oop after a nice pass from Haywood Highsmith on the fastbreak.

Shayok and the Blue Coats will continue their season on Tuesday when they return home to host the Greensboro Swarm. [lawrence-related id=21342,21329,21321]
