Studs and Duds from final preseason game vs. Giants

Studs and duds from Sunday’s preseason finale

The Jets scored a 31-27 victory over the New York Giants to score an undefeated 2022 preseason at 3-0. Some players shined in the final tune-up for the regular season, which begins in two weeks against the Baltimore Ravens. Let’s take a look at some of those players, and a couple that didn’t shine as bright as others.

Instant analysis as Jets defeat Giants in final preseason game

Instant analysis as Jets finish preseason 3-0

The New York Jets held their final tune-up before the regular season against the New York Giants and treated the game as their dress rehearsal, having most of their starters, especially on offense, play into the second quarter. Let’s take a quick look back at the game with some notes and numbers as the Jets beat the Giants, 31-27, to finish the preseason 3-0.

Quick Hits

  • Joe Flacco and the first-team offense played into the second quarter, mostly against reserve defensive players for the Giants. And they came away with a total of three points and turned the ball over twice (Michael Carter fumble, Joe Flacco interception). Not what they wanted with the Ravens coming to town in two weeks to kick off the season.
  • In his first game since requesting a trade, WR Denzel Mims played into the fourth quarter and didn’t enter the game until the second quarter. He finally learned what it feels like to score a touchdown in the NFL. This is Mims’ third season in the league. He scored zero touchdowns through his first two. Will this be enough to keep him in New York? Will he still want out?
  • Mike White bounced back nicely from his rough outing against the Falcons with two touchdown passes against the Giants, both in the second quarter. He threw one to Braxton Berrios and then one to Jeff Smith. Chris Streveler didn’t come in until the fourth quarter. Probably safe to assume now that White will be QB3 and perhaps the backup to Flacco in Week 1 if Zach Wilson can’t go. But Streveler should at least be on the practice squad, especially after some of his heroics against the Falcons and the Giants.
  • Calvin Jackson had a nice 19-yard punt return, as he tries to fight for one of the last spots in the wide receiver room and a role on special teams backing up Berrios as the punt returner. Then he wrapped up his final audition by catching the game-winning touchdown from Streveler. He had a nice preseason. Should at least be on the practice squad.
  • Will Parks may have secured the fourth safety spot. He had playing time early and recorded a couple of tackles. The question is will the Jets and GM Joe Douglas part ways with Ashtyn Davis, just two years removed from selecting him in the third round of the 2020 draft?

Key Stat

7 catches, 102 yards, 1 touchdown: The aforementioned Denzel Mims finally got an opportunity to really be involved, even if his work was done with White and Streveler at quarterback. But seven catches (on eight targets) in the final preseason sure leaves a strong impression in a “what have you done for me lately”-type league. The door is open at the position behind the top four. It’s truly a 50/50 shot at this point, but Mims certainly made the decision even tougher.

Game Ball

DB Michael Carter II: A sack and an interception in the first quarter will give any defensive players confidence going forward. All the talk among the cornerbacks has revolved around D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner, and for good reason. But Carter could quietly be one of the better nickels going forward. He’ll be interesting to watch this season.

Top Takeaway

Some positives on offense but plenty to clean up: Not too many teams will have as solid of a 1-2 punch at running back like the Jets will have with Michael Carter and Breece Hall. Both ran very tough against the Giants, though they only averaged about 2.5 yards per carry. And while Flacco moved the ball fairly well, his interception is a reminder that the offense can still be limited without Zach Wilson. That’s not what you want going up against a very tough defense in the Baltimore Ravens to open the season. Simply can’t have silly interceptions and turnovers like the Jets had Sunday.

All in all, a so-so day for the first-team offense. But Mike White and the reserves scored a couple of times, so the Jets at least seem okay with their depth.

Watch: Chris Streveler leads Jets to last-minute win over Giants

Chris Streveler heroics!

Preseason drama! You love to see it as these reserve players simply fight as hard as they can, as they try to crack the final roster or at least put good film out for other teams.

Look no furhter than the end of the Jets-Giants game. With less than a minute left, QB Chris Streveler found WR Calvin Jackson Jr. for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown as the Jets defeated the Giants, 31-27, to finish 3-0 in the preseason.

Check out the epic conclusion.

Report: Dolphins waive QB Chris Streveler

Did it take just a few weeks for Skylar Thompson to win the job?

The Miami Dolphins are currently holding OTAs at their facilities, but that hasn’t stopped general manager Chris Grier from continuing to make moves.

According to the Miami Herald’s Daniel Oyefusi, not only have the Dolphins officially signed Melvin Ingram, but they’ve also waived quarterback Chris Streveler.

Streveler was expected to compete with rookie quarterback Skylar Thompson for the third quarterback role this offseason and potentially into the regular season.

This leaves the Dolphins with Thompson, Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater at the position. It seems unlikely that the team will head into the season with more than three quarterbacks, but it wouldn’t be too surprising to see them add another young player to continue battling with the rookie.

Dolphins sign former Cardinals, Ravens QB Chris Streveler

He’s the lone backup in the room at this point.

The Miami Dolphins have continued to add to their roster, as the team announced on Tuesday that they have signed quarterback Chris Streveler.

Streveler, 27, spent 2020 and the first half of the 2021 season with the Arizona Cardinals before joining the Baltimore Ravens practice squad for the remainder of the season.

Prior to coming to the NFL, Streveler spent two years with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, helping them win a Grey Cup in 2019. In 35 games in the CFL, he completed 64.7% of his attempts for 2,698 yards and 19 touchdowns, adding another 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground.

Streveler and Tua Tagovailoa are the only quarterbacks expected to be on Miami’s roster as free agency opens with backup Jacoby Brissett to hit the market.

Ravens activate seven players from Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Ravens activated seven players from the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Wednesday

The Baltimore Ravens have seen COVID-19 make its way through their locker room over the last few weeks. The team has had to place many players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, causing them to miss one or multiple games.

Despite losing so many pieces for varying amounts of time, Baltimore announced some good news on Wednesday, as they activated seven total players from the Resrve/COVID-19 list in outside linebackers Justin Houston and Tyus Bowser, inside linebackers Chris Board and Kristian Welch, safety Geno Stone, practice squad quarterback Chris Streveler and practice squad offensive tackle David Sharpe.

It’s

The Ravens getting back so many players is a big deal. Houston and Bowser are two of the team’s best pass rushing options, while stone provides depth in the secondary. Board and Welch are key on special teams, while Streveler and Sharpe are important depth pieces. As the week goes on, hopefully Baltimore can get the rest of the players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list back as well.

Ravens to place QB Tyler Huntley on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Ravens are placing quarterback Tyler Huntley on the Reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of their Week 16 game with the Bengals

The Baltimore Ravens have been the one of the most injured teams in the league during the 2021 season. They’ve seen multiple key contributors go down with various ailments, which has made Baltimore use the next man up strategy probably more than they would have liked to.

While injures have been a key factor for the Ravens, recently COVID-19 has swept it’s way through the Baltimore locker room. Quite a few players have been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list over the last week, and that didn’t change on Christmas Day, as Ian Rapoport and Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Network reported that quarterback Tyler Huntley will miss Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals after testing positive for COVID.

The loss of Huntley is the worst-case scenario for the Ravens, as it leaves Josh Johnson as the only healthy quarterback on their roster. Lamar Jackson didn’t practice all week with an ankle injury while practice squad signal caller Chris Streveler is also on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Johnson, a 35-year-old veteran, has played for a big handful of teams over the course of his NFL career ever since starting his professional career in 2008. He will now seemingly be thrust into a massive spot, as Baltimore likely needs a win over Cincinnati in Week 16 to keep their AFC North divisional hopes alive.

Ravens add two more players to Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday

The Ravens added two more players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday

The Baltimore Ravens have seen injuries and COVID-19 decimate their roster over the course of the 2021 season. COVID has been ravaging their locker room as of late, and on Thursday the team made more moves relating to the virus.

Baltimore placed both tight end Josh Oliver and practice squad quarterback Chris Streveler on the list. Oliver and Streveler mark the 16th and 17th players currently on the Reserve/COVID-19 list for the Ravens, meaning that Baltimore has had at least one addition to to the list for eight consecutive days.

If players continue to be added to the Reserve/COVID-19 list in the coming days for Baltimore, postponement could be a real option for the Ravens’ Week 16 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. It remains to be seen if there will be more Baltimore players who need to go on the list, but hopefully the worst days of the breakout are behind them, as they are running out of healthy bodies.

Ravens sign QB to active roster on Wednesday

The Ravens signed a quarterback to their active roster on Wednesday

The Baltimore Ravens saw star quarterback Lamar Jackson leave their Week 14 loss to the Cleveland Browns with an ankle injury. He was carted to the locker room and deemed questionable to return, but was subsequently ruled out around halftime.

While Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said that Jackson avoided a high ankle sprain, it is currently unclear if the quarterback will be able to suit up in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers. With that in mind, the Ravens signed quarterback Josh Johnson to their active roster from the New York Jets’ practice squad, seemingly as insurance incase Jackson isn’t able to play.

Johnson has had quite the football journey, as Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun highlighted each stop that the 35-year-old has made during his career.

The veteran had a brief stint with Baltimore back in 2016, as he was with the team during training camp and the preseason. He has accumulated 1,966 passing yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions over the course of his career. If Jackson can’t play, Johnson could be the backup to Tyler Huntley on Sunday, but the team also has Chris Streveler on their practice squad. Regardless, the move looks to be an insurance one for the Ravens, as they now have plenty of players available at the quarterback position.

Ravens protect four players on practice squad ahead of Week 15

The Ravens protected four players on their practice squad ahead of their Week 15 game with the Green Bay Packers

The Baltimore Ravens have used the somewhat new practice squad call up rule to their advantage in 2021, as they’ve added key depth pieces for game days that have contributed in all three phases of the game. With injuries being a defining factor for the team, they’ve needed all of the depth that they can get.

On Tuesday, Baltimore protected four players on their practice squad ahead of their Week 15 game against the Green Bay Packers in quarterback Chris Streveler, offensive tackle David Sharpe, inside linebacker Joe Thomas and defensive back Robert Jackson.

Streveler’s protection seems a bit more relevant this week, as star quarterback Lamar Jackson suffered an ankle injury in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns and might not be able to suit up in Week 15. If that is the case, Streveler will become the backup to Tyler Huntley. Sharpe was called up in Week 14 for offensive tackle depth, as was Jackson so that the team could have an extra defensive back. Thomas would provide some addition inside linebacker talent, but the unit seems to have plenty of healthy playmakers already.
