Chris Streveler set to be gameday backup QB for now for Cardinals

Kliff Kingsbury has liked what he has seen from the former CFL QB. Streveler also gives the Cardinals some special teams flexibility.

One of the surprises on Sunday for the Arizona Cardinals when they played the San Francisco 49ers was the fact that quarterback Brett Hundley was inactive. Instead, it was former Canadian Football League QB Chris Streveler who was active and even came in for a snap on offense, picking up a first down on a three-yard run off a quarterback sneak.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Monday that is how it is going to be for the time being.

“We really like Chris,” Kingsbury said in his Monday media session. “Didn’t know what to expect. Watched his CFL stuff and he was running around out there making a lot of plays, and then you get him here and he did a nice job picking up our offense.”

Kingsbury called him smart, athletic and “very accurate.”

“We wanted to get him involved and see where it goes,” he added.

While some compare Streveler to a guy like the New Orleans Saints’ Taysom Hill, who plays some quarterback, plays on special teams, lines up at tight end or even at receiver, Kingsbury doesn’t see that in him.

“He plays quarterback, he said. “It’s not one of those deals where he’s a ‘slash’ guy. He’s a real quarterback and has done a real nice job.”

Kingsbury praised Brett Hundley for what he did last year when he stepped in for Kyler Murray and helped the Cardinals close out a win on the road over the Seattle Seahawks, but did indicate the Streveler is the backup for now.

“We just feel like, for now, ‘Strev’ give us a dynamic there with his special teams ability we’re going to have him up (active) right now.”

Streveler played one special teams snap as well as once snap on offense in Week 1.

Brett Hundley, Eno Benjamin inactive for Cardinals vs. 49ers

Chris Streveler gets to back up Kyler Murray.

The Arizona Cardinals released their first inactive list of the season on Sunday leading up to their Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

There are a couple of surprises.

This year, teams will play with 48 active players. They can have a 55-man roster if they promote up to two practice squad players for the game. However, the Cardinals stayed with 53 players and then had five players inactive.

Their inactives are:

  • RB Eno Benjamin
  • QB Brett Hundley
  • OL Josh Jones
  • OL Josh Miles
  • S Deionte Thompson

Perhaps the biggest surprise on this list is Hundley, who normally backs up starting quarterback Kyler Murray. However, Kliff Kingsbury is a big fan of newcomer Chris Streveler. Hundley is listed on the depth chart as the No. 2 quarterback on the team but Streveler could have a role on special teams. If he plays on special teams, that is the reason why he is active over Hundley.

If Murray were unable to start, Hundley probably would be the guy to replace him.

Benjamin, a seventh-round pick, is inactive over D.J. Foster, who was promoted to the active roster after receiver KeeSean Johnson was placed on the COVID-19 reserve. Foster will have a role on special teams.

Teams must have eight offensive linemen active on gameday. Justin Murray, Max Garcia and Lamont Gaillard will back up the starters.

Christian Kirk, others have worked out with Cardinals QBs

Kirk spends a lot of time with Chase Edmonds and Trent Sherfield. They have thrown the ball around with Brett Hundley and Chris Streveler.

The Arizona Cardinals have not yet been able to get on the practice field as a team but several teammates here in the Phoenix area have managed to get some work in together. There has been talk of getting quarterback Kyler Murray together with his receivers and that is coming up, but some guys have been working out together and it has included Cardinals quarterbacks.

Receiver Christian Kirk said he spends a lot of time with teammates Trent Sherfield and Chase Edmonds. “We three like to stick together and we’re always with one another, so I do a lot of training with them,” he told reporters in a video conference last week.

Kirk said they have had quarterback Brett Hundley with them “a couple of times here or there” to throw the ball around a bit. Hundley lives in the Phoenix area. Chris Streveler, the quarterback who played in the Canadian Football League and signed with the team this offseason, also has worked out with them. “He’s been fun to get to know and be around,” Kirk said. “Hard-working guy, he’s been willing to learn and get out on the field and throw some route, being able to help him and get him up to speed so it isn’t overwhelming when it comes to training camp.”

Kirk also said he has done some working out with Larry Fitzgerald, as he lives just down the street from him.

As for Murray, “Kyler has been in Dallas for the majority of the time,” but Kirk said their reunion will come “real soon.”

Kirk said doing it leading into camp is ideal “so we are picking up right where we left off.”

Cardinals worked out Chris Streveler at QB, WR; signed him as QB

He believes the Cardinals are a great fit for his skills offensively.

Because it is early in the offseason and free agency doesn’t come for more than a month, there has been a lot of attention on the recent signing by the Arizona Cardinals of former Canadian Football League quarterback Chris Streveler. He officially joined the Cardinals this week.

We know a little about him from his career in college and in the CFL, but we learn a little bit about his workout and signing with the Cardinals in an interview he did with Christian Shanafelt on his podcast recently.

How did things go with the Cardinals?

“I ran some routes and threw,” Streveler told Shanafelt. “I did basically a full workout at quarterback and then a full workout at receiver.”

In his other workouts with other teams, it was much of the same. He said he did some work at quarterback, at running back, at receiver and on special teams with the Miami Dolphins, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only had him throw the ball.

Streveler had a few workouts lined up in December, but because of a foot fracture he played through during the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ championship run, he had to push them back to the end of January.

Some see Streveler as a player like New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill, who plays multiple positions.

Streveler is willing to play anywhere.

“My mindset, anytime I get into a team or an organization is just whatever I have to do to help the team and give myself the best chance to help an organization and take advantage of those opportunities,” he said. “Whatever you guys think is best for me, I’m going to do it.”

As for signing with the Cardinals, he likes the fit.

“They wanted me as a quarterback and I think it’s a great fit with what they do offensively with the skill that I bring,” he said. “I’m super excited about the opportunity.”

He said the base concepts head coach Kliff Kingsbury has in his offense are similar to those he ran in college at South Dakota, where he excelled.

Streveler plans on moving to Arizona in March and then the Cardinals will begin their offseason program in April.

At that point, we will begin to find out what the Cardinals envision for him. Will he compete for the No. 2 QB spot behind Kyler Murray? Will he become a gadget player? Will he simply compete to be a third quarterback on the team, either on the roster or on the practice squad?

His skills, his career path and his personality suggest he might just become quite popular among fans.

5 things to know about new Cardinals QB Chris Streveler

Check out some of his stats and career.

The Arizona Cardinals announced officially the addition of former Canadian Football League quarterback Chris Streveler to the roster on a futures deal for 2020. The signing was reported already, so it was expected.

What should you know about the 6-foot-1, 216-pound quarterback?

He is a champion

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Playing in the CFL, he played two seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They won the Grey Cup in 2019. He was not the starter, but he is a champion.

CFL quarterback to sign with Cardinals over Dolphins

Former CFL quarterbach Chris Streveler has elected to sign with the Arizona Cardinals over the Miami Dolphins.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Chris Streveler was one of a handful of players to work out for the Miami Dolphins late in January. Kicking the tires on under the radar prospects is nothing new for the Dolphins, as they’ve made a habit in 2019 of searching near and far for any potential upgrade or contributor to the roster.

But what happened next? That’s something new. The Dolphins won’t be signing Streveler — who is instead electing to sign with the Arizona Cardinals according to a report from Farhan Lalji of TSN.

Streveler was an essential contributor for Winnipeg in 2019 as the team broke through to win the CFL’s Grey Cup for the Blue Bombers’ first championship in nearly 30 years.

Now? Streveler will look to fight for the chance to serve as the backup to Kyler Murray out west in Arizona. The Dolphins’ quarterback room almost assuredly played a hand in Streveler’s decision. With Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick primed to return and Miami’s eyes still very much set on Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 Draft, Streveler would have faced steep competition to even warrant reps in the preseason here in Miami.

Instead, a path of least resistance to try to break through at the NFL level is a sound and smart decision for Streveler — and the Dolphins will need to kick tires elsewhere if they’re hoping to find a diamond in the rough.

Report: Cardinals to sign CFL QB Chris Streveler to futures deal, pay him guaranteed money

The team is reportedly guaranteeing a good chunk of his 2020 salary, suggesting they will give him a long look this offseason.

The Arizona Cardinals are adding an interesting quarterback to their roster this offseason. They are going to sign Canadian Football league quarterback Chris Streveler to a futures deal for 2020, according to TSN’s Farhan Lalji.

Streveler had a workout with the Cardinals two weeks ago.

Streveler played two seasons in the CFL for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who won a championship in 2019.

He is a dual-threat quarterback. He is listed at 6-foot-1 and 216 pounds. In two seasons, he passed for 2,698 yards, 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. He also ran 204 times for 1,167 yards and 22 touchdowns.

While on the surface it would appear Streveler is simply a player they want to bring in and compete for the third quarterback job, the money they are giving him suggests they think they might have found something.

According to Lalji, the Cardinals are guaranteeing around $100,000 of his salary for 2020.

The Cardinals’ backup quarterback in 2019, Brett Hundley, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. Perhaps they see him able to compete for the backup job.

Some believe they see him as a player like New Orleans Saints do-it-all quarterback Taysom Hill, who plays special teams, catches passes, runs the ball and passes every once in a while.

As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see how he is used.

Will he be a gadget player or will he legitimately have a shot at backing up Kyler Murray?

Cardinals hold tryouts for pair of CFL players

They brought in CB Tre Roberson and QB Chris Streveler.

The Arizona Cardinals are working on adding talent to their offseason roster. They are reportedly looking at more than just NFL players. According to Howard Balzer, the Cardinals brought in a pair of Canadian Football League players.

One was cornerback Tre Roberson and the other was quarterback Chris Streveler.

In 2019, Streveler completed 66.7% of his passes for 1,564 yards, eight touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also had 733 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. According to Balzer, it was his second workout with the Cardinals.

Roberson is listed at 6-0 and 190 pounds. He had seven interceptions in 2019, one he returned for a touchdown, and 41 tackles for Calgary.

Bruggman is a local kid who is from Phoenix. He played 11 games for Montana State in 2016, had 888 passing yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. He also was at Texas A&M in 2017 but didn’t play.
