Titans waive OLB Josh Smith, work out two players

The Titans continue to make moves at the outside linebacker position.

Outside linebacker and Vanderbilt product Josh Smith, who was the last Tennessee Titans player remaining on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, was activated and then waived on Saturday, the team announced.

Smith spent parts of the 2019 season on the Titans’ practice squad. Smith, rookie offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson and veteran defensive lineman Jack Crawford all spent time on the COVID-19 list recently.

Tennessee also took a look at a few more outside linebackers after holding workouts for Austin Larkin and Chris Peace, a pair of players who went undrafted in 2019.

Peace played for both the New York Giants (four games) and Los Angeles Chargers (one game) in 2019. He was in for a grand total of 21 snaps on special teams and three on defense.

As an interesting side note, Peace completed an internship with NASA earlier this offseason.

Larkin took part in one game with the Atlanta Falcons last season, totaling one tackle. He played 26 snaps on special teams and 10 on defense.

Giants’ Eric Smith, Chris Peace complete internship with NASA

New York Giants OL Eric Smith and LB Chris Peace spent three days in Houston as part of the NFLPA’s externship program with NASA.

New York Giants offensive lineman Eric Smith and linebacker Chris Peace, who also played together at the University of Virginia, got the experience of a lifetime this offseason.

The pair, as part of the NFLPA’s externship, spent three days in February at the Johnson Space Center in Houston alongside eight other NFL athletes as part of the NASA program.

“When I was a kid, I was always kind of interested in the stars,” Peace said, via ESPN. “Had a telescope, planets and all that stuff. Real big fan of NASA. So why not, given the opportunity? … It was a chance to do something different.”

Both Peace and Smith quickly learned that the planets and stars are only a small fraction of what NASA does.

“When I got there to Houston in NASA, I was completely caught off guard,” Peace said. “I thought we were going to go down there and learn about stars and planets. And we saw a little bit about it. But for the most part, it was kind of like a business internship. When we were down there, we learned about all their technology and worked with their technology side.”

Instead, the two Giants quickly realized a lot of what NASA does is invent, create and build advanced technologies that improve the quality of life for Americans and those all over the world.

“If you were there … and looked at my face, I was in complete shock. I’m like ‘there has to be a catch or something to it.’ What do you mean free technology?” Smith said. “They were like, ‘No, we make ideas and technology for public use. All you have to do is patent it and make it yours.’ Sometimes they don’t even really want credit. They’re just putting out ideas to make everyday life better. I was in shock.”

Smith loved the experience so much he even asked to go to space.

“I was like a kid in a candy store even though I didn’t know I liked space like that,” Smith said. “It took me [getting] a little taste of it. By the time I left, whew!

“I asked to go to space, too. I didn’t sugarcoat it. Anybody can apply to be an astronaut. I think it’s thousands of people that apply.”

Smith and Peace both expect to use what they learned at NASA in life and on the field, and hope to somehow remain involved with the program in the future.

Giants’ Chris Peace will intern for NASA this offseason

New York Giants LB Chris Peace will intern for NASA in Houston this offseason.

New York Giants linebacker Chris Peace will be hard at work this offseason preparing for his sophomore season in 2020, but that is far from the only thing he’ll be doing.

Peace announced via Twitter on Monday evening that he has been accepted as an intern for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and will begin his time in Houston next month.

NASA describes its internships as follows:

Being an astronaut isn’t the only cool thing about space. Interns use their creativity and innovation to work on projects impacting NASA’s mission, such as returning to the Moon by 2024. As a NASA intern, you will be part of an amazing team that is dedicated to space exploration. You will work with leading experts and gain valuable experience as you participate in research and mission projects. Come dream with us and change the future.

Peace was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia following the 2019 NFL Draft, but was eventually waived in late September.

The Giants were quick to pounce, claiming Peace off of waivers from the Chargers. However, he was placed on season-ending injured reserve in early December due to a knee issue, ending his rookie campaign early.

Peace appeared in five games between the Chargers and Giants, but failed to record any statistics. He received just two defensive snaps and 21 special teams snaps.

Giants place Jabrill Peppers on IR, activate Kareem Martin

The New York Giants have placed SS Jabrill Peppers and DL Chris Peace on IR, activating LB Kareem Martin and promoting SS Sean Chandler.

New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur initially scoffed at the notion of placing Jabrill Peppers on season-ending injured reserve, but the safety’s fractured vertebrae have proven to be too much to overcome.

Peppers was placed on IR on Saturday, officially ending his debut season with the Giants and ushering in the era of rookie Julian Love, who has played well in each of the previous two weeks.

Replacing Peppers on the roster is safety Sean Chandler, who has been promoted from the practice squad.

In addition to promoting Chandler, the Giants have also activated linebacker Kareem Martin off of injured reserve — the second and final IR’d player New York has activated this season.

To clear room for Martin on the 53-man roster, the Giants also announced that defensive lineman Chris Peace has been placed on IR due to a knee injury.

Currently, the Giants have a full 53-man roster but are one man short on the practice squad. Expect them to make a signing early next week.

Giants’ Evan Engram, Daniel Jones among four out vs. Eagles

The New York Giants have ruled out four players against the Philadelphia Eagles, including TE Evan Engram and QB Daniel Jones.

The New York Giants had hoped to get their full compliment of offensive play-makers back on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, but that will not happen.

Despite optimism that he was close to returning, tight end Evan Engram (foot) was unable to practice on Saturday after participating each day earlier this week, indicating there was some sort of setback, and was subsequently ruled out.

In addition to Engram, rookie quarterback Daniel Jones (ankle) had his status become official as he was also ruled out.

Joining Engram and Jones on the sideline will be rookie cornerback Corey Ballentine (concussion) and tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion), who have also each been ruled out.

Finally, safety Jabrill Peppers (back) and defensive lineman Chris Peace (knee) have each been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Giants injury report: Daniel Jones sheds boot, still not practicing

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones shed his walking boot on Friday, but was still held out of practice and is unlikely to play in Week 14.

The New York Giants were back at it on Friday afternoon, taking the field for another practice ahead of their Monday night showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Very little changed from Thursday, although rookie quarterback Daniel Jones did appear to take a step forward, shedding his boot before riding on the stationary bike during the portion of practice open to the media.

However, despite the progress, head coach Pat Shurmur once again reiterated that it’s “very likely” Eli Manning starts in place of Jones.

Meanwhile, Shurmur dismissed the ankle injury of left tackle Nate Solder as mere “maintenance,” which is good news considering the team didn’t even acknowledge the injury until Wednesday, previously saying Solder had missed practice over a personal matter.

Shurmur also finally acknowledged that safety Jabrill Peppers (back) could end up on injured reserve after suffering a vertebrae fracture a couple weeks ago.

On the other end of things, wide receiver Golden Tate (concussion) and tight end Evan Engram (foot) continued their progress and are on pace to play against the Eagles.

Below is the official injury report released by the Giants:

Full participant: WR Golden Tate (concussion), LT Nate Solder (ankle)

Limited participant: TE Evan Engram (foot)

Non-participant: QB Daniel Jones (ankle), Rhett Ellison (concussion), S Jabrill Peppers (back), DE Chris Peace (knee), CB Corey Ballentine (concussion)

Giants injury report: Evan Engram, Golden Tate return to practice

New York Giants TE Evan Engram (foot) and WR Golden Tate (concussion) returned to practice on Thursday.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday, but there was one noticeable, albeit unsurprising absence: rookie quarterback Daniel Jones (ankle).

Despite conspiracy theories that he’s not that badly injured, Jones was unable to practice with his teammates on Thursday, instead riding a stationary bike in a boot while trainers looked on during the portion if practice open to the media.

In addition to Jones, safety Jabrill Peppers (back) was not spotted at practice and tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion) was not participating.

On the other side of the injury front, Thursday saw the return of tight end Evan Engram (foot), wide receiver Golden Tate (concussion), cornerback Corey Ballentine (concussion) and left tackle Nate Solder (ankle).

All five of those players appeared to be practicing in full and with the sole exception of Ellison, appear poised to make their return on Monday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Below is the official injury report released by the Giants:

Full participant: WR Golden Tate (concussion)

Limited participant: TE Evan Engram (foot), LT Nate Solder (ankle), CB Corey Ballentine (concussion)

Non-participant: QB Daniel Jones (ankle), Rhett Ellison (concussion), S Jabrill Peppers (back) and DE Chris Peace (knee)
