Watch: Former Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann explains what went wrong

Do you buy Holtmann’s answer?

As well all know, [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] has been hired by DePaul and Ohio State removed the interim tag from [autotag]Jake Diebler[/autotag] and officially announced his hiring on Sunday.

What we didn’t know was why Holtmann believed that the Buckeyes moved away from him. During his introductory press conference on Monday, the former Ohio State coach was fairly succinct on his explanation: roster construction.

Holtmann didn’t think that he managed mixing his youth along with experience on the Buckeye roster, but mentioned that the group was not consistent enough to make a return to the NCAA Tournament.

Honestly, this is a cop out in my eyes, as Diebler was a win away from getting this team into the tournament. On top of that, in the era of one-and-done, you have to prepare for this. You think Holtmann would have learned after Malaki Branham, but he obviously didn’t

It’s fairly disappointing that Holtmann took part of the blame, as it was pretty clear that he was a much bigger part of the issue.

What do you think about Holtmann’s answer to his struggles in Columbus which led to his termination?

Former Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann has found a new job

Best of luck coach

It didn’t take long for the college basketball world to connect former Ohio State head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] with the open position at DePaul in Chicago, Illinois.

The rumors came to fruition on Thursday, as Holtmann was named the next Blue Demon head coach. He signed a deal for six years, so it looks like the program will be patient with its new leader.

Holtmann knows the Big East well. Before he landed in Columbus, he was the head coach at Butler where he amassed a 70-31 record while making the NCAA Tournament every season.

His tenure at Ohio State started off on the right foot, but went sideways the last two seasons, missing the tournament in his last full year with the Buckeyes and trending that way in this one before his dismissal.

The Chicagoland high school basketball scene is very good, so Holtmann could turn around DePaul very quickly.

Recently fired Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann could find a job soon

Holtmann could land on his feet soon

On Sunday afternoon, the Ohio State men’s basketball team pulled off a big-time upset of Purdue, the first game since the dismissal of head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag].

Although he was held in high regard by his coaching peers, it was evident that his tenure in Columbus had to come to an end. Less than a week later, rumors have begun about where Holtmann would land.

In a report by The Silver Bulletin, it looks like he may stay in the Midwest, as Holtmann and DePaul have had preliminary conversations about their open head coaching vacancy. He is familiar with the Big East, as he previously coached at Butler before taking the Ohio State job.

It should come as no surprise that Holtmann would land back on his feet at another school as its head coach. He does have a solid resume as his career record of 251-170 shows that he’s a solid coach.

Big Ten basketball coach gets fired one month before March; is Andy Enfield next?

Ohio State fired Chris Holtmann, raising the question of whether Andy Enfield will be fired in the coming weeks.

Ohio State men’s basketball unraveled in the past year. Buckeyes Wire noted that Tuesday night’s loss to Wisconsin marked OSU’s 16th consecutive road loss. Given that record of consistent futility, it’s not surprising at all the Ohio State fired head coach Chris Holtmann on Wednesday. It’s the first Big Ten basketball coach firing. With USC moving into the Big Ten, it’s worth asking if Andy Enfield should be feeling any pressure about his job status.

Every USC men’s basketball fan knows — and would agree — that Andy Enfield should be fired. In a sane and logical world, he will be sent packing if he doesn’t look for another opportunity elsewhere. However, “should” and “will” are different matters. Let’s examine if Andy Enfield actually will be fired this year:

Report: Ohio State basketball to part ways with head coach Chris Holtmann

It has been reported that Holtmann has been let go of this Buckeye responsibilities

It has been a trying last few seasons for Ohio State basketball and it finally came to the decision to let head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] go according to a report by The Field of 68.

After another loss last night, this time at the hands of Wisconsin, it’s 16th consecutive on the road, the conclusion was simple, Holtmann needed to be dismissed. His Ohio State tenure was semi-successful, as he started off his career in 2017 with five consecutive seasons of over 20 wins. Aside from the COVID-19 season, they made the NCAA Tournament in every one of those years.

That past two have not gone well nearly as well, as the Buckeyes finished 16-19 last season and are trending in the wrong direction once again, as they currently have a 14-11 record, just 4-10 in conference play.

It remains to be seen who will take his spot for the remainder of the season, but this was the right move in firing Holtmann. He seemingly has lost this team, one that has more than enough talent to make it to the NCAA Tournament.

Ohio State fired its head coach after loss to Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s win last night got Ohio State’s head coach fired

Wisconsin finally returned to the win column last night with a 62-54 triumph over Ohio State.

Greg Gard’s team improved to 17-8 on the season and 9-5 in Big Ten play, snapping a four-game losing streak that dated back to January 26.

Ohio State, meanwhile, fell to 4-10 in Big Ten play and fired longtime head coach Chris Holtmann earlier today, a mere 13 hours after last night’s game.

Holtmann went 137-86 in seven years in Columbus, Ohio. He made the NCAA Tournament each of his first five years, counting the 2019-20 season when Ohio State would’ve made it had the tournament not been canceled.

Things took a turn the last two seasons, with a 16-19 2022-23 campaign leading into this year’s disappointing 14-11 (4-10 Big Ten) record.

Holtmann was obviously on thin ice entering last night’s matchup against the Badgers. But if someone wants to start the narrative: Greg Gard, in a way, ended the Chris Holtmann era at Ohio State.

Rivalry news: Ohio State fires basketball coach Chris Holtmann

A rival just lost its leader. #GoBlue

Michigan basketball isn’t the only Big Ten program that’s struggled of late, and in many ways, both of the Wolverines’ rivals haven’t exactly lived up to expectations. And Ohio State appears to be the first to do something about it.

On the heels of a disappointing season thus far in Columbus, one where the Buckeyes are 14-11, OSU is making a change. Though his seventh season has yet to be completed, head coach Chris Holtmann — who has never gotten past the second round of the NCAA Tournament is out as the head coach of Ohio State. He replaced Thad Matta following the 2016-17 season.

Holtmann departs Columbus with a losing record to the maize and blue, having gone 5-6 in 11 games. After winning his first contest against the Wolverines, Holtmann lost two straight before winning two straight, losing one more, winning two more, and then losing the last three to Michigan in the series — including a surprising loss in Ann Arbor in January of this year.

There’s yet another matchup this year between the Wolverines and Buckeyes, coming March 3 in Columbus.

What we learned after Ohio State basketball’s crushing loss to Indiana

This one hurts, in a season of misery for the Ohio State basketball team. #GoBucks

Ohio State basketball looked like it had a win in hand, but another second half collapse saw the Buckeyes drop a tough one, this time to Indiana 76-73.

The Buckeye held the lead for the majority of the game, only to see the Hoosier storm back in the second half and make plays when needed to and come away with the road victory.

Once again, head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] had to watch his team struggle down the stretch without an answer for its opponent. Up thirteen points with just over 10 minutes remaining, Indiana outscored the Buckeyes 27-13, and stole a win.

It was another Buckeye loss where we learned plenty about this team, which had some good, but a lot of bad in the latest gut wrenching loss.

What we learned after Ohio State basketball’s loss to Illinois

The misery of 2024 Ohio State basketball continued on Tuesday night. #GoBucks

It was the same old song and dance for the Ohio State men’s basketball team, as it got run out of its own building by Illinois, losing 87-75.

The Buckeyes miserable 2024 continued, as they have gone just 2-6 in the new year and dropped to 13-8 overall, 3-7 in the Big Ten. For the third game in-a-row, Ohio State allowed over 80 points to its opponent, all resulting in a loss.

It’s another ugly feather in head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag]’s cap, one that is littered with them over the past two seasons. Find out below what we learned about Ohio State after its latest Big Ten loss.

Ohio State AD Gene Smith speaks out about basketball coach Chris Holtmann’s future

Some interesting comments from Gene Smith on the future of Chris Holtmann. #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball team is again floundering in January after having a pretty promising start to the 2023-2024 season. That makes two years in a row and the Buckeyes are in serious jeopardy of not making the NCAA Tournament once again. In fact, it would be a bit of a shock for this team to turn it around and find a way to elbow its way into all of the madness.

With all of the troubles on the court once again, especially after two highly regarded recruiting classes, one has to wonder what outgoing athletic director, Gene Smith, thinks about the job that Holtmann is doing.

Well, wonder no more. In a story that appeared in the Columbus Dispatch, Smith provided a bit of an opening to suggest that he may have a decision to make before he officially retires at the end of June.

“We have a lot of this season left to play, and we have coaches and players that are focused on winning every day,” Smith was quoted as saying in The Columbus Dispatch. “I’m looking forward to seeing how this turns out.”

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement and we could very well see some action if the team and coaches can’t pull things together and end the season on a high note.

Who knows what it’ll take for Smith to make a decision either way, but you have to believe not making the NCAA Tournament wouldn’t be a positive development. If a move is made, a buyout of $14 million would have to be absorbed by the university.

Tick tock goes the clock.
