Report Card Grade for the Bucs Week 3 performance against the Broncos

At Bucs Wire, we usually recap the team’s game that week, but the Bucs’ performance against the Broncos has made us change our approach.

Here at Bucs Wire, we usually recap the team’s game that week, but the Bucs’ performance against the Broncos has made us change our approach. For one week only, we will keep this recap and grading system simple.

Why? Because giving everyone a low grade and talking down about them after a dud performance doesn’t do anyone any good.

For nearly everyone on this team, it will be a performance that serves as a blip on the radar. Baker Mayfield, especially, will look back on this and think, “What happened?” From the first possession, Mayfield expected this to be a walk in the park, and the Broncos came out of the gates ready to prove something. They pressured him non-stop as the Lions did, but they never let their foot off the gas.

As a result, Baker Mayfield had one of the worst days of his career.

The rest of the team performed similarly, but the defense looked lost against rookie Bo Nix. The former Oregon quarterback has had his detractors in the draft and NFL community, but he played winning football against a tough defense. The Bucs couldn’t even contain him whenever he decided to run the ball.

The defense also couldn’t find a rhythm on Sunday. Sunday as a whole was a broken dance class of sorts, but now it is on Todd Bowles to rally his team and get them ready for the Eagles in Week 4.

Bucs OC Liam Coen praises Chris Godwin’s approach to film study

We have heard it countless times- the work you put in off the field is just as important to what you do on game day.

We have heard it countless times- the work you put in off the field is just as important to what you do on game day.

Traditionally, there are two types of players when it comes to watching game film; first, there is your Kyler Murray-type who needs mandatory film study included in his contract, and then you have someone like Peyton Manning who was “maniacal” and watched upwards of 20 hours of film per week, according to Pat McAfee. Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar wide receiver Chris Godwin falls into the latter half of those players, as Bucs OC Liam Coen told media on Thursday.

“He’s been that way. He’s been practicing that way, he’s been preparing that way. You should see him in meetings. Whenever an offensive coach gets up and speaks in front of our unit, Chris Godwin is taking notes,” Coen said of the receiver’s approach to studying film. The Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator went as far as to say Godwin will sit in on the team’s run-game meetings on Friday “on the edge of his seat paying attention and taking notes and then will come and ask questions,” Coen continued on Godwin’s engagement.

With the amount of preparation that goes into each game, it’s no surprise that Godwin has caught a second-best 15 receptions (on 16 targets), totaled the second-most receiving yards with 200 through the first two weeks of the season, and helped Baker Mayfield achieve a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeted.

Baker Mayfield praises Pat Surtain ahead of Week 3 showdown

“He’s got unbelievable ball skills, he can run with guys, he understands concepts and can read the patterns really well,” the QB said of PS2.

The Denver Broncos are set to go on the road this week to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ahead of that showdown, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield has been full of praise for Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain.

Surtain followed D.K. Metcalf in Week 1 and George Pickens in Week 2. He’s now expected to cover Mike Evans in Week 3.

“That’s what a guy like Pat Surtain can offer a defense – true, one-on-one, shut one side of the field down,” Mayfield said, via Scott Smith of the Bucs’ official website. “He’s that type of player. He’s got unbelievable ball skills, he can run with guys, he understands concepts and can read the patterns really well.

“He’s a guy that is going to have his PBUs and make plays on the ball, but we have to design things to be able to get Mike some matchups other than just him. We also trust Mike in one-on-one scenarios regardless.”

Tampa Bay also has Chris Godwin, another talented receiver who usually lines up in the slot, so he’ll often face Ja’Quan McMillian.

“They’re both dynamic in their own right,” Surtain said of Evans and Godwin. “Mike, he’s a great player. He’s done it like you said, consistently over the years, and Godwin does it at a high level as well, too. We definitely have [an] eye out for those two and I think we have a great plan moving forward towards the week.”

Pleasantries exchanged, Surtain and the Bucs will face off on Sunday.

Going back to 2020, Bucs have the most wins in the NFC

Coming off of three straight NFC South crowns and a Super Bowl win in 2020, the Bucs remain the winningest team in the NFC since that year.

There’s even more good news for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following their 2-0 start to the 2024 season. Since 2020, the Bucs have had the most wins in the entire NFC, including playoff victories.

The Bucs social media team mentioned this in a post.

The 2020 season was magical, as the team signed future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, leading them to an 11-5 record and a Super Bowl LV victory. They were even better the next season, going 13-4, but lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional round.

The next two seasons saw the Bucs repeat as NFC South champions, but with lower win totals than expected. They went just 8-9 and 9-8 in 2022 and 2023, respectively, but they still managed one playoff victory in that timeframe.

Including their two wins so far in 2024, the Bucs have 43 regular season and six playoff wins since the beginning of 2020. A remarkable feat, the Bucs are looking to now become true threats in the NFC.

Bucs WR Chris Godwin is a safe bet when targeted for a pass in 2024

Through the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin can be summed up with just one word; perfect.

Through the first two weeks of the 2024 NFL season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin can be summed up with just one word; perfect.

The eight-year veteran has been nothing short of sure-handed for the Buccaneers offense so far, hauling in all 15 of his on-target throws, per PFF. Godwin’s 15 receptions and 200 receiving yards are both currently tied for second-most in the NFL in their respective categories. While his two touchdowns are tied for the leagues most with 10 other players, including Mike Evans.

Not only does Godwin hold the top WR PFF grade of 91.7, but Bucs QB Baker Mayfield currently has a perfect passer rating of 158.3 when targeting Godwin.

Former Buccaneers CB Carlton Davis III was said to have given the Lions defense “the best WR scouting report,” per Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glen prior to Sunday’s NFC Divisional Round rematch. However, it didn’t take Godwin long to exploit his matchups to turn in another stellar performance, as the Buccaneers got out to a 2-0 start on the young 2024 season.

As the Liam Coen offense has provided the team and fans new wrinkles into the playbook, the veteran WR has seen a snap alignment of 58.2% in the slot, compared to 37.4% last season.

Godwin is on pace for 128 receptions, 1700 yards and 17 touchdowns, in the final season of his 3-year $60M contract.

WATCH: Bucs WR Chris Godwin left wide open for long touchdown

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers led the team to a win through the air last week against the Commanders, they are doing the same this week.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers led the team to a win through the air last week against the Commanders. They are doing the same this week now against the Lions. The team started out slow with some critical drives ending short but they rectified that.

In major part, to Liam Coen’s play design and wide receiver, Chris Godwin is making plays.

In the second quarter, the Lions and Bucs were tied, but that changed when Baker Mayfield connected with Chris Godwin outside the hashes for a long touchdown play. That play gave the Bucs the lead, and Godwin had his 36th career game of 100 receiving yards.

Keep in mind it is still the second quarter.

The Bucs now take a 13-6 lead despite the dominance of Liosn edge rusher Adian Hutchison. The offense has sputtered, but this may be the spark they need to get things going offensively and consistently for the rest of the game.

The Bucs will test the Lions new look secondary in playoff rematch

The Lions prioritized giving their secondary a facelift. They did that by investing in a first-round pick at cornerback in Terrion Arnold.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had their eyes set on this Week 2 matchup since the schedule was announced. They lost to the Detroit Lions in the divisional round of the playoffs in a close game and they believe things can go their way this time around.

This offseason, the Lions prioritized giving their secondary a facelift. They did that by investing in a first-round pick at cornerback in Terrion Arnold. They added with two more notable moves in signing Amik Robertson and then trading with the Bucs for Carlton Davis III.

The matchup between Mike Evans and Chris Godwin will be interesting against their former teammate and those new faces. Jalen McMillan, though, is a new face for all three of the new defenders.

Last week, they played the Rams, but they were without Puka Nacaua, and Cooper Kupp had over 100 yards receiving. The three-headed monster of the Bucs on offense may either prove to be too much for the new secondary or they will emerge as one of the best groups in the NFL.

Fantasy football: Where to draft Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin

Analyzing Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin’s 2024 fantasy football ADP and where to target him in fantasy drafts.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin is coming off his 3rd-straight 1,000-yard receiving season and his 4th in 5 years. Last season was the 1st time since Godwin’s sophomore season in 2018 that he was fully healthy and didn’t miss a game. Godwin’s TD numbers have slightly gone down since his career-high 9 TD campaign in 2019-20. He only had 2 TDs last season.

Below, we look at Chris Godwin’s 2024 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Entering 2024, he is expected to have another solid season as he and fellow Tampa Bay WR Mike Evans are among the most consistent yardage wideouts in the league.

Chris Godwin’s ADP: 72.11

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com; last updated at time of this publishing – ADPs continually change as more drafts occur)

Godwin’s 72.11 ADP in redraft leagues puts him in the range of the 6th to 10th round depending on the size of the league. His ADP ranks 3rd on the Bucs, behind RB Rachaad White (30.35) and Evans (31.32).

Among all wide receivers, Godwin’s ADP puts him 33rd at the position. He’s behind Houston’s Tank Dell (70.56), Chicago’s Keenan Allen (67.28) and Washington’s Terry McLaurin (66.19), while ranking ahead of Bills rookie Keon Coleman (73.94), Jacksonville’s Christian Kirk (75.79) and Tennessee’s Calvin Ridley (76.74).

Where should you draft Godwin?

Godwin’s fantasy value will be a little lower this season than in years past, especially with the continued regression of his receiving TD numbers and his lowest number of receptions (83) since the Covid season of 2020 when he had 65 receptions in 12 games.

Godwin is still a very solid receiver that you can expect to exceed 1,000 receiving yards as he has done consistently throughout his career.

The biggest worry with drafting Godwin is that Evans will take a good number of targets away from Godwin, something he’s been dealing with his entire career. Another concern is that the Bucs lost offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who was hired as Carolina’s coach in the offseason. So, the Bucs offense may not be as strong as it was last season.

I would feel very confident in drafting Godwin as a high-end WR3 or a low-end WR2 if you prioritize other positions in the draft based on your draft position. Godwin is a very solid receiver and you can pretty much know what you’ll get from him week in and week out. As a reliable depth pick at the wideout position, there aren’t many options better than Godwin.

The 5 star NFL wide receivers next up for big paydays, including Ja’Marr Chase

These 5 NFL wide receivers will directly benefit from the Brandon Aiyuk deal.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk finally agreed to his monster extension with the franchise on Thursday, ending his long-standing holdout with the team.

Aiyuk is a very rich man now, and him reaching his new deal right on the heels of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb signing his is going to speed up the extension market for other star players at the position.

It’s always good with a couple of big contracts get done at the same position to look at who else might be in line for their respective paydays, and we’ve gathered five wide receivers who will have new contracts sooner than later.

Ja’Marr Chase

Sam Greene/USA TODAY Sports

Chase is in the midst of a hold-in with the Bengals, and we’re assuming a new deal with one of the league’s best receivers is only a matter of time right now. While quarterback Joe Burrow is the most valuable player on the team’s roster, Chase is a close second. The team cannot go as far as it wants without him, so you can expect a massive deal will get done sooner than later.

Kareem Elgazzar/USA TODAY Sports

Tee Higgins

Higgins, on the other hand, is a much trickier case for the Bengals. It’s not impossible for Cincinnati to extend both players, but Higgins is understandably going to want top-flight money. If the Cincinnati season goes awry, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Bengals try to trade Higgins away for a first-round pick to a contender. If it goes well, then Cincinnati will be in the difficult spot to either negotiate an extension, a sign-and-trade with another team or watch Higgins walk as the most sought-after free agent at the position in some time. It’s a good problem to have great players until it’s time to pay them. Unless the team can get a deal done, the Bengals may have to make some hard decisions with Higgins when the time comes.

Matthew Emmons/USA TODAY Sports

WR Chris Godwin

After paying quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, tackle Tristan Wirfs and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. this offseason, Tampa Bay doesn’t have much cap space at its disposal in 2025 and would have to restructure contracts and/or make tough cuts to make space for a new Godwin deal. Godwin could be the top receiver on some teams, and we have a feeling he’ll want to cash in on his third professional contract. He could join Higgins as a hot commodity in free agency next spring if he leaves the Bucs.

WR Amari Cooper

The Browns have an absolute cap nightmare to suss through in 2025 and 2026 as the last two years of the Deshaun Watson contract takes its toll on the organization. Unless it wants to kick $33 million down the hill on Watson’s deal on a restructure, it may not be able to hold onto Cooper at the contract number he’s going to want. A new deal is coming Cooper’s way at some point in the next year, and he could be a really popular trade target at the deadline if the Browns don’t play well this season and start looking to the future.

Trevor Ruszkowski/USA TODAY Sports

WR Puka Nacua

Nacua is the NFL’s best bargain at the position, as the 2023 fifth-round pick exploded as one of the elite talents at the position and garnered the fourth-most receiving yards in the NFL. As he plays for the pass-happy Los Angeles Rams, his production is going to remain among the best in the league. While he’s not set to be a free agent until 2027, it feels highly implausible that he’s going to play out his deal before getting paid. For a player this talented and this productive, we doubt his management will have him playing at this low a contract for much longer. We bet a new deal gets done sooner than later… like after this season, honestly.

Will the Vikings be in the market a top receiver next offseason?

With uncertainty about Jordan Addison and his future with the team, will the Minnesota Vikings pursue a top-flight receiver next season?

As it stands today, the Minnesota Vikings have arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL with Justin Jefferson – who just got a massive extension and will be with the team for the foreseeable future.

They also have one of the best wide receiver duos in the league when you add in second-year receiver Jordan Addison. Addison had an outstanding rookie season, and he could be poised for an even bigger role in year 2.

As a rookie last year, Addison is scheduled to be with the Vikings for at least the next three seasons, including the upcoming year. Minnesota could opt to keep Addison for another season beyond that by exercising their fifth-year option on the young receiver. So Addison will also be with the team for the foreseeable future, right? Maybe not.

Addison has shown some significant lapses in judgment in his short time in the league, and his latest incident could result in the team pursuing other top options at the position, writes Pioneer Press’ Vikings beat writer Charley Walters.

Walters points out that, should Addison be suspended for his most recent incident – a DUI arrest in Los Angeles just a week after Vikings cornerback Khyree Jackson was killed as the victim of a drunk driver – it would make Addison’s contract non-guaranteed.

That would make it much easier for the Vikings to move on from Addison and pursue other options at the position, whether it be through free agency, a trade, or the NFL Draft. That last one, however, is maybe the least likely scenario, as the Vikings currently only have three selections in next year’s draft. However, pursuing a trade or someone in free agency is a distinct possibility if the team moves on from Addison.

A number of high-profile wide receivers are currently scheduled to hit free agency after the season, including Dallas Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb, San Francisco 49ers’ (for now) Brandon Aiyuk, and Cincinnati Bengals’ Tee Higgins.

Panthers’ wide receiver Diontae Johnson and Bucs’ receiver Chris Godwin are also scheduled to hit free agency after the season.

While potentially none of those names actually hit free agency, there should be a number of good options available if Minnesota chooses to go that direction.
