NFL rules on ex-Jaguars CB’s personal conduct violation

The NFL issued an eight-game suspension for former Jacksonville cornerback Chris Claybrooks on Friday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

But after spending last season on the commissioner’s exempt list while his case was investigated, Claybrooks has been granted time served by the league and is not subject to further punishment. The free-agent cornerback can sign with a team at any time.

Claybrooks was arrested twice on separate charges relating to domestic abuse in 2023.

He was first indicted on misdemeanor domestic assault with bodily injury and vandalism under $1,000 charges in April, which were dropped the next month, per the Florida Times-Union.

Then Claybooks was arrested on misdemeanor domestic battery and felony false imprisonment charges in July, according to ESPN. He pleaded not guilty last August.

The NFL placed Claybrooks on the commissioner’s exempt list two weeks following his not-guilty plea, where he remained for the entire season. The move prohibited Claybrooks from practicing and attending games.

A 2020 seventh-round pick by Jacksonville out of Memphis, Claybrooks made six starts over 46 appearances with the Jaguars and recorded 81 tackles with one for loss, five defended passes and one forced fumble. He averaged 20.6 yards per kickoff return over 22 attempts.

Updated list of Jaguars set to become 2024 free agents

The Jaguars have re-signed a handful of their impending free agents, but there are still several players set to hit the open market.

In addition to the six new Jacksonville Jaguars set to be added to the roster, the team has been working to bring back a few of their own free agents.

Ezra Cleveland, Jeremiah Ledbetter, and Daniel Thomas all signed new contracts with the Jaguars and both Blake Hance and D’Ernest Johnson will reportedly soon follow. Jacksonville also used the franchise tag to keep Josh Allen from hitting the market.

While the Jaguars hope they can add Calvin Ridley to that list, for now he and several of his 2023 teammates are set to hit the market when free agency officially begins Wednesday. Here’s every Jaguars player with an expiring contract who is still set to become a free agent:

With the Ravens’ Devin Duvernay set to join the Jaguars’ roster, Agnew’s time with the franchise is clearly over. He even said his goodbyes on social media Tuesday. In three seasons with the team, he earned a trip to the Pro Bowl, scored two return touchdowns, caught five touchdown passes, and recorded a rushing touchdown.

It was a quick hi and bye for Barkley, who signed with the Jaguars a day after Christmas in 2023 amid a string of injuries for Trevor Lawrence. He was active for Jacksonville’s Week 17 game against the Carolina Panthers and took six snaps in garbage time.

Blackson signed with the Jaguars just before the start of the 2023 season and had a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Despite being on the field for just 30 percent of the Jaguars’ defensive snaps, he managed to fall on three fumbles.

The Jaguars seemed to remain optimistic about the 2020 first-round pick all the way to the bitter end. But after four seasons, Chaisson has just five career sacks.

Claybrooks missed the entire 2023 season due to a domestic battery court case that’s still ongoing. While there was some confusion about whether his contract would toll over due to the lost year, Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports that Claybrooks will be an unrestricted free agent as of Wednesday.

After signing a three-year contract with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie in 2018, Herndon re-signed with the team on one-year deals in 2021, 2022, and 2023. For the fourth straight offseason, he entered this March as an impending free agent. In six seasons with Jacksonville, Herndon has appeared in 83 career games and has three interceptions, nine tackles for loss, and 32 passes defended.

The Jaguars reportedly decided not to tender Johnson, who was set to be a restricted free agent this offseason. That’ll allow the special teams ace to hit the market after spending two seasons in Jacksonville.

McManus spent one season with the Jaguars and is reportedly headed elsewhere. The veteran kicker agreed to a one-year deal with the Commanders on Monday night.

Moore joined the Jaguars in 2022 and spent the entire year on the practice squad, then he spent all of 2023 on the team’s injured reserve. As an exclusive rights free agent, it’d cost next to nothing for Jacksonville to keep him, but there’s been no indication yet that they’ve extended a qualifying offer.

Quarterman, a fourth-round pick in 2020, played out the final year of his rookie contract in 2023. In four seasons with the Jaguars, he 54 career tackles, one tackle for loss, and one very consequential forced fumble.

Ridley is easily the biggest name on this list and the top receiver on the free agent market. In his first season with the Jaguars following a 2022 trade from the Falcons, Ridley recorded 76 receptions for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns. Jacksonville is reportedly working to bring back the receiver and he “currently prefers to return” to the Jaguars, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

No player in Jaguars history has played more consecutive games with the team than Shatley. After signing with the team as a free agent in 2014, he signed new contracts with the Jaguars in 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Shatley started six games for the Jaguars in 2023.

The Jaguars picked up Van Lanen in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2022, but he’s appeared in just 71 snaps over two years with the team. As a restricted free agent, the Jaguars could tender the lineman, but there hasn’t been an indication that they’ve decided to do so.

Jaguars CB Chris Claybrooks placed on Commissioner Exempt List

Chris Claybrooks will not be allowed to practice or attend games while on the exempt list.

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks is going on the NFL’s Commissioner Exempt List, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

Claybrooks, 25, was arrested twice during the 2023 offseason and is on the exempt list while the second incident is being tried in court. In April, Claybrook received misdemeanor charges of domestic assault with bodily injury and vandalism. Those charges were eventually dropped in May after a settlement was reached.

In July, he was arrested again on charges of domestic battery and false imprisonment. He pleaded not guilty to those charges earlier this month and is due to next appear in court on Sept. 11.

While on the exempt list, Claybrooks may not practice or attend games. He also won’t count against the Jaguars’ 53-man active roster.

Claybrooks was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and earned snaps early in his career at cornerback, but has since settled into a role on special teams as a gunner. He has 81 career tackles with one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.

Jaguars’ Chris Claybrooks arrested again for alleged domestic violence

Chris Claybrooks was reportedly arrested on domestic violence charges for the second time this year.

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks was arrested on domestic violence charges for the second time this offseason, according to a report from Tony Wiggins of the “Locked On Jaguars” podcast.

“We are aware of the arrest of Chris Claybrooks and are currently in the process of gathering information,” the Jaguars said in a statement, via Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

Per Wiggins, Claybrooks was booked into Duval County Jail on charges of domestic battery and false imprisonment.

In April, Claybrooks was arrested in Nashville, Tenn., on misdemeanor charges of domestic assault with bodily injury and vandalism. Those charges — which stemmed from a dispute at a movie theaterwere dropped in May after a settlement was reached.

Claybrooks, 26, was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and has primarily contributed on special teams during his three seasons with the Jaguars. Through three seasons he’s recorded 81 tackles, three punt returns for 12 yards and an average of 20.6 yards on 22 kick returns.

Jaguars 2023 roster review: CB Chris Claybrooks

Chris Claybrooks has seen his defensive snaps dwindle, but he’s proven to be one of the NFL’s best gunners.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is still off on the horizon. Join us in the NFL’s dead zone with a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

Chris Claybrooks joined the Jacksonville Jaguars as a raw speedster who provided value as both a cornerback and a return specialist. But three years into his NFL career, Claybrooks has settled into a different role as a valuable special teamer.

While an offseason arrest earned him unwanted attention, Claybrooks has proved to be one of the better gunners in the NFL. That could make his spot on the 53-man roster tough to supplant.

Contract (2023): $1,136,045 base salary, $292,091 prorated signing bonus, $1,428,136 cap hit.

Acquired: Jaguars drafted Claybrooks with the No. 223 overall pick in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft.

  • 51.1 (2022)
  • 48.4 (2021)

  • Two passes defended, one fumble recovery, 29 tackles (2021)
  • Three passes defended, one tackle for loss, 39 tackles (2020)

Misdemeanor charges against Jaguars CB Chris Claybrooks dropped

Charges from an April arrest of Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks were dropped by prosecutors on Monday.

Misdemeanor charges for domestic assault with bodily injury and vandalism filed against Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Chris Claybrooks were dropped by prosecutors in Davidson County, Tenn. on Monday after a settlement was reached.

Claybrooks, 25, was arrested in Nashville last month after an alleged dispute at a movie theater where he was accused of grabbing a phone from a woman who told police she was his ex-girlfriend. Claybrooks allegedly destroyed the phone and left the woman with bruises on her hand after taking it.

Neither the Davidson County District Attorney’s office nor Claybrooks’ lawyer have responded to requests for comment after the charges were dismissed Monday, according to TMZ.

Last month, the Jaguars said they were aware of the arrest, but offered no further comment at the time.

Claybrooks was picked by the Jaguars in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft and has become a key contributor on special teams. In three years with the team, Claybrooks has recorded 81 tackles.

Jaguars DB Chris Claybrooks arrested and charged with assault, vandalism

Court records show Jaguars defensive back Chris Claybrooks was arrested Saturday night in Nashville, Tenn.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back Chris Claybrooks was arrested on Saturday and is facing misdemeanor charges of domestic assault with bodily injury and vandalism, according to Davidson County, Tenn. court records.

“The Jaguars are aware of a recent incident in Nashville, Tennessee involving Chris Claybrooks and are currently in the process of gathering information,” the team said in a statement. “We will have no further comment at this time.”

The records show Claybrooks was released on a $2,500 bond. A photo published by a website called Scoop Nashville purportedly shows a mugshot of the Jaguars defensive back from his booking.

Details of the incident(s) that led to the arrest are not clear at this time. Claybrooks is scheduled to appear in court on May 1.

Claybrooks, 25, is a Nashville native who recently finished his third season with the Jaguars after joining the team as a seventh-round selection in the 2020 NFL draft. He has 81 career tackles and has contributed on special teams as a returner, taking 22 career kickoffs back a combined 454 yards. Claybrooks is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Would the Jaguars have the fastest 4×100 team? Jamal Agnew thinks so.

Buccaneers CB Jamel Dean is curious which NFL team could put together the fastest 4 x 100 relay team. Jamal Agnew says it’s the Jaguars.

On Thursday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean posed a simple question: Which NFL team could compose the best 4×100-meter relay team using their fastest defensive back, linebacker, running back and wide receiver?

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay said his team “would easily” win, but Jacksonville Jaguars receiver and return specialist Jamal Agnew likes Team Duval’s chances.

Agnew has plenty of confidence in his speed. At the Pro Bowl this year, he told Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins that he thinks he’s the fastest player in the NFL and could beat Hill in a race.

The rest of the team picked out by Agnew can certainly turn on the jets too. Chris Claybrooks said his 40-yard dash was timed at 4.25 seconds ahead of the 2020 NFL draft. Foyesade Oluokun reportedly ran a 4.48 at his pro day in 2018, and Travis Etienne Jr. was timed in the low 4.4s in 2021.

We’ll never find out how the Jaguars would fare in that kind of contest, but Agnew’s right — Jacksonville’s quartet can fly.

Jaguars postgame injury report: Claybrooks exits win over Dallas early

Cornerback Chris Claybrooks exited the game in the second quarter and didn’t return. His status moving forward is currently unclear.

Jacksonville avoided any catastrophic injuries like they suffered on Monday night when rookie running back Travis Etienne was lost for the season with a foot injury against the New Orleans Saints this time around. But the Jaguars did lose one player in the first half of their 34-14 win over Dallas in the preseason finale, as cornerback Chris Claybrooks was slow to get up on a play in the second quarter and limped off the field. He didn’t return.

Around the 4:45 minute mark of the second quarter, Claybrooks made a tackle on Cowboys running back JaQuan Hardy and took a knee to the hip according to Action News Jax’s Brent Martineau. However, the second-year cornerback was moving around on the sideline with the trainers and looked like he could return if needed. He also seemed to be doing well after the game as the Jags’ social media page caught up with him after the game.

The Jags are already playing thin at cornerback. Tre Herndon injured his knee in the first game and has been considered week-to-week since, while rookie Tyson Campbell didn’t suit up for the final preseason outing.

The secondary is not an area of tremendous depth for the Jags, and though Claybrooks is a player who could be on the roster bubble, they can’t afford to lose any players at cornerback.

The Jaguars haven’t released any information at this point regarding Claybrooks’ injury or its severity, but we’ll keep you updated with any news regarding his status.

Update: After Sunday’s game coach Urban Meyer said C.J. Beathard also got dinged up a little but will be fine.

Jaguars place CB Chris Claybrooks on the Reserve/COVID-19 list

The second-year cornerback becomes the fourth Jaguars player to go on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Jacksonville has had to put yet another player on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, as second-year defensive back Chris Claybrooks has become the fourth Jaguar to be placed on the list, the team announced on Saturday. This means that Claybrooks has either tested positive for COVID-19 or was in close contact with someone who did.

With the Jaguars set to start training camp on Wednesday, they’ll also be without quarterback Jake Luton and defensive backs C.J. Henderson and Luq Barcoo, who Claybrooks joins on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

A seventh-round pick out of Memphis in the 2020 NFL draft, Claybrooks saw action in 13 games as a rookie and even saw four starts with Henderson’s injury. On the year, he totaled 33 tackles and three passes defensed.

The NFL has announced strict protocol regarding COVID-19 this fall, including the fact that an outbreak among unvaccinated players could lead to a forfeit if a game isn’t able to be played. It’s currently unclear if any of the players on the list are vaccinated.

Players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list are required to spend 10-14 days away from the team and must test negative before returning. The NFL allows vaccinated players to return to the team if they can complete two negative screenings within 24 hours. With this in mind, it seems very likely that all four of the players on the list will miss a decent portion of training camp.
