Kool-Aid McKinstry, Chris Braswell should be among first picks in second round of 2024 NFL draft

Alabama football fans should be excited about the second and third rounds of the 2024 NFL draft!

The first round of the 2024 NFL draft got underway on Thursday night and three former Alabama Crimson Tide football players had their lifelong dreams come true as their names were called.

As is always the case, there were many surprises during the opening round including the fact that Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry failed to be selected.

As we enter night two of the three-day event, I would expect Kool-Aid to be among the first players selected in the second round. Alabama edge rusher Chris Braswell is also expected to come off the board relatively early in round two.

Friday night should be an eventful night for Crimson Tide fans!

How to watch the second and third rounds of the 2024 NFL draft

Panthers come away with 4-player haul in ESPN’s 3-round mock draft

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Field Yates ended up with a pretty solid three-round haul for the Panthers.

The Carolina Panthers have themselves a little golden nugget with the 33rd overall selection of the 2024 NFL draft. So, how will they cash it in?

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Field Yates just took turns churning out picks for a fresh three-round mock. And as far as Pick No. 33 goes, the former sells it off to the Los Angeles Rams for the 52nd pick, 83rd pick and a 2025 third-rounder.

After the Rams use that swap to take Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the Panthers get their first shot with the 39th overall pick. Kiper goes with Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey:

I thought about cornerback and edge rusher, but this might be a great spot to add a talented wideout to one of the worst receiving corps in the league. McConkey just knows how to get open.

Next up is No. 52, where Yates takes Michigan cornerback Mike Sanristil:

Sainristil would be an excellent nickel for Carolina. He has a penchant for forcing turnovers — he had six picks in 2023 — and is standout tackler.

Kiper is then behind the wheel for No. 65, where Alabama pass rusher Chris Braswell comes off:

Braswell is another instant contributor for the Panthers in this draft. He is an underrated pass-rusher after registering eight sacks last season. Carolina’s pass rush struggled big-time in 2023.

And to wrap it up, Kansas State tight end/fullback Ben Sinnott is Kiper’s choice at No. 83:

Sinnott is my top-ranked H-back, but he can be used mostly as a tight end, especially in a thin class. His 676 receiving yards last season ranked fourth among FBS tight ends. He measured 6-foot-4 and weighed 250 pounds at the combine, and he could quickly rise to the top of the Panthers’ depth chart.

The four-player haul includes three prospects at premium positions in wideout, corner and pass rusher. Sprinkling in Sinnott, who visited the team last week, is also a solid investment given the Panthers’ lack of production from the tight end spot.

Former Alabama DE Chris Braswell can turn this NFC North team into a contender

With the NFL draft rapidly approaching, see why former Alabama DE Chris Braswell is a perfect match for this NFC North team.

Former Alabama defensive end Chris Braswell is not expected to be a first-round selection, but he is a proven contributor on the defensive front. His value to a team will be felt immediately and he will be a steal outside of the first night of the 2024 NFL draft.

ESPN NFL draft experts recently put together post-first-round targets (subscription required) for all 32 NFL teams. Matt Miller paired Braswell with the Chicago Bears.

“Let’s imagine that the Bears solve issues at quarterback and wide receiver in Round 1,” writes Miller. “If GM Ryan Poles can add the powerful pass-rushing of Braswell to play opposite Sweat, the Bears could contend in 2024. Braswell had eight sacks, 42 pressures and three forced fumbles last season.”

When thinking about the Bears and the upcoming NFL draft, many would correctly assume that the focus is on the quarterback position. While that is certainly the case, Chicago must also consider what to do with the picks they hold after the first round.

Braswell would be a strong second-round selection and as Miller states, adding him to the already-strong defensive line could turn the franchise into a contender for the NFC North, a division that currently has the Detroit Lions as the top team.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama players preparing for the NFL draft as the offseason progresses.

Panthers nab starting WR in ESPN’s 7-round mock draft

ESPN’s Matt Miller left the Panthers with a solid haul in his new seven-round mock draft.

ESPN NFL draft analyst and insider Matt Miller did the Lord’s work this week, and he’s blessed the Carolina Panthers in the process.

Miller’s seven-round 2024 mock draft was released on Wednesday. To begin his spring collection for Carolina, he projects University of South Carolina wideout Xavier Legette as the 33rd overall pick:

One nugget I’ve heard from multiple NFL scouts since the Senior Bowl is that the Panthers love this wide receiver class and believe they will be able to add a rookie starter at No. 33. The Panthers sent 10 people to the South Carolina pro day, and Legette’s 4.39 speed at 6-1 and 221 pounds is perfect for slant routes — which would in turn help quarterback Bryce Young get the ball out faster in 2024.

Legette delivered a nugget himself just two weeks ago at his pro day.

“A lot of coaches came and hollered at me before and after this process here,” the Mullins, S.C. native said of the Panthers. “They say they got a buzz in their facility for me and I’m just ready to see where I’ma land.”

The big 6-foot-1, 221-pounder ended his time for the Gamecocks on a high note—reeling in 71 receptions for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns. Legette’s efforts earned him a second-team All-SEC selection.

To round out Carolina’s haul, Miller mocked the following prospects to join Legette:

  • No. 39: OT Kingsley Suamataia (BYU)
  • No. 65: DE Chris Braswell (Alabama)
  • No. 101: RB Braelon Allen (Wisconsin)
  • No. 141: CB Jarrian Jones (Florida State)
  • No. 142: DT Justin Eboigbe (Alabama)
  • No. 240: WR Jordan Whittington (Texas)

Lions GM Brad Holmes attends Alabama’s pro day

Lions GM Brad Holmes attends Alabama’s pro day to check out several prominent 2024 NFL draft prospects in person

Lions general manager Brad Holmes doesn’t typically attend many collegiate pro days. However, he made his annual pilgrimage to Tuscaloosa on Wednesday for the Alabama Crimson Tide pro day workouts.

Holmes has been to the Alabama pro day every year. Last year he selected defensive back Brian Branch in the draft after seeing him up close and personal on the Crimson Tide pro day.

Holmes was joined by at least four other GMs and dozens of NFL coaches and scouts. The pro days for USC and Ohio State were also on Wednesday and the Lions were confirmed to have representation at both of those workouts as well, but the head man was in Alabama.

Among the many Crimson Tide prospects who could pique Holmes’ interest in the draft, listed in order of projected draft slot:

EDGE Dallas Turner

OL JC Latham

CB Terrion Arnold

CB Kool-Aid McKinstry

EDGE Chris Braswell

DL Justin Eboigbe

WR Jermaine Burton

K Will Reichard

Broncos met with OLB Chris Braswell at the NFL combine

Broncos draft prospect Chris Braswell totaled eight sacks at Alabama last season.

As the Denver Broncos prepare for the 2024 NFL draft, the team continues to meet with promising collegiate players. One of the players they met with was Alabama’s Chris Braswell, the linebacker confirmed during his media availability at the NFL combine last week.

In recent years, the Broncos have become enamored with players from the Crimson Tide, including cornerback Patrick Surtain and wide receiver Jerry Jeudy,

At Alabama, Braswell had 75 total tackles, 10.5 sacks and one interception in his three-year career.

Braswell is projected to be an eventual starter from his NFL combine profile. This means that Braswell may likely be a Day 2 or Day 3 pick. On Thursday, Braswell participated in several events in the combine, including the 40-yard dash, vertical jump and broad jump. Braswell ran a 4.6-second 40 and had a 33.5-inch vertical, and a 9-foot, 7-inch broad jump.

The Broncos are hoping to upgrade their pass-rush, which only totaled 42 sacks in 2023 (opponents totaled 52 sacks against the Broncos’ offense).

Denver holds six picks, including 12th overall in the first round. The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 68, Alabama edge rusher Chris Braswell

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Alabama edge rusher Chris Braswell.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects who could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2024 NFL draft.

A team can never have enough pass rushers. With Rashan Gary, Preston Smith and Lukas Van Ness, the Green Bay Packers have a solid stable of edge rushers. They could always use another.

A pass rusher that Brian Gutekunst could target early in the 2024 NFL Draft is Chris Braswell. The Alabama edge rusher checks in at No. 68 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

A five-star recruit out of Maryland, Braswell became a member of the defensive line rotation in 2022 and finished the season with four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Braswell broke out this past season for the Crimson Tide. He finished the season with 42 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, one interception (returned for a touchdown) and forced three fumbles.

At 6-3, 251 pounds with nearly 34-inch arms, Braswell is a well-put-together edge rusher. The former five-star recruit has a nice blend of power and quickness.

The Alabama edge rusher fires out of his stance and has excellent acceleration. He can convert speed to power. He uses that length and power to bench-press offensive linemen backward. He gives good secondary effort and has good closing burst to the quarterback. To go along with his eight sacks, Braswell recorded 56 pressures this past season.

“Braswell’s greatest strength is his leverage and how it adds a strength beyond his size,” Brent Taylor, the editor for Roll Bama Roll, said. “At 6’3” 255, he’s a little stouter than the lanky edge rushers that have become all the rage lately, and he uses that to be able to continually work offensive tackles backward with a lower body power before using a wide variety of moves to slip past them. Essentially, he’s a borderline five-star athlete in terms of speed and generally has a well-coached block-shedding technique, but what makes it all really stand out is that he starts almost every pass rush move with the point of blocking already a yard or two into the backfield because he’s knocked his guy backward.”

As a run defender, Braswell sets a firm edge and stays balanced through contact. He has a large tackle radius and can lasso ball carriers to the ground. Despite having limited opportunities, Braswell recorded 24 stops this past season (PFF).

“He’s ok against the run, but far from great,” Taylor said. “I liked his functional strength to stand up blockers, and he made a few really nice tackles by blowing his guy into the backfield and taking down the running back between the tackle and guard. That said, I think his lack of length and lateral speed really can hurt him if he’s trying to play the strong side and set an edge against stretch plays. Overall, it’s an incomplete grade for him from me, since Alabama tended to sub him out for a big defensive end on most shorter yardage situations, and he generally played the weakside while Dallas Turner was the strongside.”

Fit with the Packers

With Gary, Smith and Van Ness already on the roster, the Packers don’t need an edge rusher to step in and provide an immediate impact. They just need another piece to help take their pass rush to the next level.

With his quickness and power, Braswell would provide quality depth on the edge for the Packers. He’s not just a pass-rush specialist, he sets a firm edge and is capable of developing into a three-down force.

“I think Braswell can have a long career as a complementary pass rusher, particularly in a 4-2-5 defense where he can play more defensive end and a little less linebacker,” Taylor said. “He won’t be a 10-sack guy, but I could definitely see him being one of those consistent five-to-seven sack players that fans of his team always complain that the national media underrated. I’d definitely consider him in the second round if he was the right roster fit, and I think he’d be an absolute steal if he drops to the 4th-round.”

If Braswell shows out at the NFL Scouting Combine, he’s a sneaky pick to be the selection with the 25th overall pick. It’s far more likely that the Packers would target him in the second round.

The name of the game is to get after the quarterback and Braswell can hunt quarterbacks. Adding him to an already impressive stable of edge rushers would be a rich-get-richer type pick for the Packers.
