Texas Basketball: Experts project five-star AJ Johnson to the Horns

Texas basketball is close to a second Top 15 commitment.

Texas basketball is having itself a great week. On Wednesday, the Longhorns defeated the No. 2 Gonzaga Bulldogs, 93-74. The signature win appears to have caught one five-star shooting guard’s attention.

AJ Johnson, a combo guard from Southern California, is trending toward Texas following its Gonzaga dismantling.

Two predictions were made in favor of the Longhorns this week. Rob Cassidy and Keenan Womack have Chris Beard adding the elite talent. Beard has already earned a commitment from Ron Holland, the No. 10 overall player in the 247Sports composite.

Johnson has room to fill out his frame, weighing 160 pounds at 6-foot-5. Clearly, his build isn’t keeping him from national recognition.

Adam Finkelstein of 247Sports had the following to say about the dynamic player in his scouting report.

He shoots a good ball from the outside and has a tight handle with both combination moves and stop-and-go change of pace.

The California native is the No. 2 combo guard and No. 15 overall player in the 247Sports composite. He would become the second top 15 recruit for the Longhorns in the 2023 class.

Report: Chris Beard’s contract details released

According to Horns247, Chris Beard’s contract is for seven years and $35 million. Beard was making the same amount of money at Texas Tech.

Texas made the coaching hire of the offseason on Thursday. Chris Beard has returned home after five seasons at Texas Tech. To acquire his services, a $4 million buyout was paid and now, Beard’s contract details have been released.

According to Chip Brown of Horns247, Beard’s contract is for seven years and $35 million. The former Texas Tech head coach was making the same amount in Lubbock, while Shaka Smart had a contract for $3.4 million a year.

With Beard making the same amount of money at Texas as he did at Texas Tech, it proves he did not make the switch for a bigger payday. An alumnus of the University of Texas, Beard is here to do one thing – win basketball games.

Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said he and Beard had discussed a “lifetime, rolling contract” in the past. Beard refused and the Red Raiders were not given the opportunity to counter Texas’ offer.

While Beard has seven years on his contract, success will be required from fans before it expires. Six seasons have passed since the Longhorns last won an NCAA Tournament game, while Beard has made it as far as the national championship. He will immediately bring a winning attitude in the postseason to Austin.
