Instant analysis of Bears’ ugly 16-13 loss to Ravens

In many ways, the Bears’ loss to the Ravens was an indictment on everything that’s wrong with the Matt Nagy era in Chicago.

There’s a history of some pretty sloppy Bears-Ravens games, and Sunday’s game at Soldier Field was no exception. With Lamar Jackson sidelined with an illness, this was a game that was ripe for the taking for Chicago. But, as we’ve grown accustomed to with this Bears team, they just couldn’t get it done.

The Bears suffered a brutal 16-13 loss to the Ravens, which dropped them to 3-7 on the season. For the second year in a row, Chicago has lost five straight games.

In many ways, this game was an indictment on everything that’s wrong with this Bears regime, particularly head coach Matt Nagy. Not only was Chicago facing backup quarterback Tyler Huntley in his first career start, but the Bears just collapsed in a game that they should’ve won, especially given the defense’s best outing in weeks.

Whether it was Nagy’s misusage of timeouts or the bizarre fourth-and-1 sequence that left fans frustrated, it becomes clearer with each week that Nagy needs to be fired — whether it’s now, after Thanksgiving or at season’s end.

The big story of the game was rookie quarterback Justin Fields suffering a rib injury in the third quarter, which knocked him out for the remainder of the game. Before that, Fields had his share of struggles, finishing 4-of-11 for 79 yards and was sacked twice. It’s unclear whether he’ll be ready to face the Lions on Thanksgiving in just four days.

Andy Dalton, who began the season as the starter, stepped in and threw two deep touchdown passes in relief of Field, including a 49-yard bomb to receiver Marquise Goodwin that would’ve and should’ve been the game winner.

Unfortunately, the defense couldn’t hold on against Huntley, who led his team  on a five-play, 72-yard touchdown drive to win the game. But Chicago was without several key starters, including Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks and Eddie Jackson.

While the defense once again blew a lead, there were a couple of standout performances on defense from linebacker Roquan Smith and outside linebacker Robert Quinn, who absolutely dominated.

Smith had 17 tackles, including two for a loss, in one of his most impressive outings. He had 14 tackles in the first half alone. Quinn had a career-high 3.5 sacks against the Ravens, bringing his season total to 10 sacks.

Now, the Bears face a short week as the Lions await on Thanksgiving. And given how Chicago has lost five straight games and could very well give Detroit its first win of the season, there’s not much to be thankful for in this Nagy era. Except that maybe it’s mercifully coming to an end in the near future.

Bears fans are blasting Matt Nagy following 4th-and-1 sequence

Matt Nagy continues to find new ways to embarrass himself, as evidenced by one sequence in the 4th quarter of the Bears’ game vs. Ravens.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy continues to find new ways to embarrass himself, as evidenced by one sequence in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Ravens.

With the Bears facing a fourth-and-1, there was a wild sequence of events that unfolded that left many fans confused, upset, but not really surprised given Nagy’s incompetence.

Here’s how it unfolded, via Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic:

  • Punt team comes on
  • Nagy calls timeout
  • Panic on the sideline regarding his headset
  • Offense hurries back on the field 4th and 1
  • Wildcat play goes for no gain
  • Plus a holding penalty
  • Ravens start in Bears territory

As you can imagine, Bears fans were livid as Nagy continues to prove why he’s not the guy in Chicago. For most, that entire sequence summed up Nagy’s entire coaching experience with the Bears.

Andy Dalton replaces injured Justin Fields, finds Darnell Mooney for Bears’ first TD

“Andy Dalton finds Darnell Mooney for a touchdown” wasn’t a sentence we were expecting to write during this game.

“Andy Dalton finds Darnell Mooney for a touchdown” wasn’t a sentence we were expecting to write during this game.

After Justin Fields exited the game with a rib injury early in the third quarter, Dalton entered in relief and began dealing. He found Jimmy Graham for 23 yards, then fired a screen pass to Mooney, who broke free from tacklers and sprinted to the endzone for a 60-yard score.

It was the first touchdown of the day for the Bears and it put them up 7-6 over the Ravens.

Information on Fields is still coming in, but this could be Dalton’s game to finish. He’s currently still in for the offense midway through the third quarter with the Bears still leading 7-6.

Bears QB Justin Fields questionable to return with rib injury

Bears QB Justin Fields suffered a rib injury in the third quarter and is questionable to return.

It’s been pretty brutal for the Bears offense Sunday afternoon against the Ravens. But things went from bad to worse when rookie quarterback Justin Fields exited the game with a rib injury in the third quarter.

Fields took a hit to the ribs on a scramble on third-and-long, where he was examined in the blue medical tent before being escorted to the locker room. Andy Dalton, who was the starter at the beginning of the season, replaced him and promptly led the Bears on a touchdown drive to give the team a 7-6 lead.

After an impressive last couple of games where he took a step forward in his development, he got off to a slow start coming out of the bye week against the Ravens. Fields completed 40of-11 passes for 79 yards through three quarters.

The Bears lead 7-6 in the third quarter.

Bears vs. Ravens: 5 takeaways at halftime

The Bears trail the Ravens 6-0 at halftime. Here’s what we learned from the first half of Bears-Ravens.

It’s been an ugly first half of football for the Chicago Bears, who trail the Baltimore Ravens 6-0 at halftime. Although, to be fair, it could be much worse.

Linebacker Roquan Smith and edge rusher Robert Quinn have come to play for the Bears defense, while Chicago’s offense failed to make any sort of progress from an impressive fourth quarter against the Steelers in Week 9.

But this game is far from over. The Bears receive the kickoff to open the second half, and a touchdown would give them the lead. But the offense is going to need to clean things up if that’s the case.

Here’s what we learned from the first half of Bears-Ravens:

Bears OLB Robert Quinn off to strong start vs. Ravens

Bears edge rusher Robert Quinn had two sacks in the first quarter against the Ravens.

The Chicago Bears are without star edge rusher Khalil Mack, who landed on injured reserve with season-ending foot surgery, but it’s Robert Quinn who’s stepping up in his absence against the Baltimore Ravens.

Quinn had an impressive first quarter for the Bears, where he sacked Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley twice to jumpstart Chicago’s pass rush against Baltimore.

Quinn entered the game with a team-best 6.5 sacks, which brings his total to 8.5 on the season. After a two-sack performance in his first season in Chicago, Quinn has rebounded as one of the team’s best defensive players through the first half of the season.

He has three tackles, including two for a loss, and two sacks into the second quarter.

Chicago has sacked Huntley three times into the second quarter, and their defense is going to need to continue to bring pressure to make things hard on Huntley, who’s making his first NFL start.

The Bears and Ravens are scoreless in the second quarter.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson out with illness vs. Bears

The Bears defense caught a huge break as Ravens QB Lamar Jackson is inactive with an illness for today’s game.

The Chicago Bears have been dealing with some brutal injuries this week after Khalil Mack was lost for the season and several starters are out heading into their game against the Baltimore Ravens.

While Chicago will be without Mack, Akiem Hicks, Allen Robinson and Eddie Jackson, Baltimore suffered a brutal blow of their own as quarterback Lamar Jackson won’t play against the Bears after battling an illness all week.

Jackson missed practice this week with a non-COVID-related illness, and he was downgraded to questionable with said illness on Saturday. Jackson made the trip to Chicago with the team and tried to be ready, but ultimately it was too much.

That means it’ll be Tyler Huntley getting his first career start against the Bears at Soldier Field.

The news is a significant blow for Baltimore, who will be without one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the league as they look to stay atop the AFC North. Jackson brings a lot to the table for this Ravens offense, whether it’s with his legs or his big arm, and the Bears defense caught a huge break.

So much for a Justin Fields vs. Lamar Jackson showdown at Soldier Field.

The Bears released their inactives list, where they’ll be without Jackson, Robinson, Hicks and Damien Williams.

Bears Week 11 inactives: Eddie Jackson, Allen Robinson OUT vs. Ravens

The Bears will be without Eddie Jackson, Allen Robinson and Akiem Hicks vs. Ravens.

The Chicago Bears have released their inactives ahead of their Week 11 game against the Baltimore Ravens, where there’s bad news about some key starters.

Safety Eddie Jackson and wide receiver Allen Robinson are both inactive for Sunday’s game. Jackson was questionable with a hamstring injury suffered in Week 8 while Robinson was doubtful with a hamstring injury suffered in Week 9.

Earlier this week, outside linebacker Khalil Mack was placed on injured reserve as he’s having season-ending foot surgery. Mack suffered the injury back in Week 3, and he’s played through it. Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks was ruled out with an ankle injury on Friday.

But Chicago is catching a break on the other side as Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has been ruled out with an illness, which means they’ll face backup Tyler Huntley as the Bears look to snap a four-game losing streak.

Here’s a look at those Bears inactive against the Ravens:

  • S Eddie Jackson
  • WR Allen Robinson
  • DT Akiem Hicks
  • QB Nick Foles
  • RB Damien Williams
  • TE Jesper Horsted
  • CB Artie Burns
