Game balls: 4 standouts from the Bears’ loss to Ravens

Despite a brutal loss to the Ravens, there were some standout performances from a few Bears players.

The Chicago Bears lost their fifth straight game, a 16-13 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, which dropped the Bears to 3-7 on the season with a Thanksgiving day meeting with the Detroit Lions just a few days away.

Despite the brutal loss, there were some standout performances, mostly on the defense, where some players stepped up as Chicago was shorthanded four key starters.

Here is who earned game balls from the Week 11 loss to the Ravens:

There were a few surprises in terms of the highest- and lowest-graded players, both on offense and defense.

Bears report card: How we graded Chicago in their Week 11 loss

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during Sunday’s game and how we graded the Bears in their loss to the Ravens.

The Chicago Bears lost their fifth straight game with a 16-13 defeat to the Baltimore Ravens, where backup Tyler Huntley orchestrated a late rally in his first NFL start. After a 3-2 start, the Bears have dropped to 3-7 heading into a Thanksgiving matchup against the winless Detroit Lions.

It was an ugly game all around — one that the Bears actually almost won — but it wasn’t a good look for Matt Nagy, who’s all but sealed his fate in Chicago.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Bears in this loss.

6 takeaways from the Bears last-minute loss to the Ravens

This game was the Bears’ for the taking, and they blew it. Our takeaways from Sunday’s loss to the Ravens.

The Chicago Bears and their dubious bye week losing streak continued on Sunday when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 16-13, dropping their record to 3-7 on the season.

An exciting quarterback matchup between Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields turned into Tyler Huntley and Andy Dalton as Jackson was inactive due to an illness and Fields left the game with a rib injury.

This game was there for the taking but questionable coaching decisions from Matt Nagy, miscommunications, and a letdown effort from the defense at the very end resulted in a surprising loss. Here are my takeaways from what we witnessed on Sunday.

Bears OLB Robert Quinn impressed with career day vs. Ravens

With Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks out, Robert Quinn stepped up in a huge way for the Bears with a 3.5-sack outing vs. Ravens.

With star edge rusher Khalil Mack out for the season to undergo foot surgery, the Bears needed someone to step up in his absence when they welcomed the Ravens to town.

Robert Quinn not only stepped up, he dominated with an impressive outing, where he totaled five tackles, including three for a loss, four quarterback hits and a career-high 3.5 sacks to give him 10 sacks in 10 games.

What made it all the more impressive was that Quinn didn’t have the benefit of Mack lining up opposite him or defensive tackle Akiem Hicks in the middle. Quinn was the guy, and he dominated off the edge — as an 11-year veteran.

Following a disappointing 2020 season, where he had just two sacks, Quinn has not only rebounded by exceeded expectations as he’s been one of Chicago’s best defenders this season.

But Quinn wasn’t thinking about his career outing after the Bears suffered a disheartening 16-13 loss to the Ravens.

“It’s sickening; I’ll just put it that way,” Quinn said after the game. “It’s a punch to the gut. We had the lead. The Ravens had the ball. It was on the defense to close it out and we didn’t do that.”

Bears QB Justin Fields confirms he doesn’t have broken ribs

Good news: Justin Fields doesn’t have broken ribs, but he is being checked out for a possible spleen injury.

The Chicago Bears suffered their fifth straight loss, a 16-13 defeat by the Baltimore Ravens. And while every loss gets us one week closer to the end of the Matt Nagy era, it’s not good when your young franchise quarterback suffers an injury.

Justin Fields exited Sunday’s game with a rib injury in the third quarter after taking some shots in the game. He was examined in the medical tent and later headed to the locker room, where he was later ruled out for the remainder of the game.

While Nagy didn’t offer any immediate updates about the extent of his injury, it appears that Fields only suffered bruised ribs rather than broken ribs, confirmed by himself.

Here’s a clip of Fields confirming he didn’t suffer broken ribs via an Instagram post from his friend Simeon Kelley.

While Fields doesn’t have broken ribs, he is having his spleen checked out at the hospital, according to Jay Glazer.

The Bears have a quick turnaround this week as they’re set to face the Lions on Thanksgiving, which puts Fields’ status for Thursday in question.

If that’s the case, Andy Dalton, who relieved Fields and threw two touchdowns against the Ravens, will make his first start since Week 2 when the Bears travel to Detroit.

Studs and duds from Bears’ shocking 16-13 loss to Ravens

The Bears lost their fifth straight game in brutal fashion to the Ravens. Here are our studs and duds from the loss.

It was a battle of the backups in the Windy City as the Chicago Bears welcomed the Baltimore Ravens to town sans their starting quarterback. Lamar Jackson was a surprise inactive due to an illness and second-year quarterback Tyler Huntley got the start in his place.

Offense was at a premium for both teams for much of the game, but things took a turn when Bears starter Justin Fields left the game with a rib injury. Andy Dalton took over and promptly gave the Bears the lead with a touchdown pass to Darnell Mooney.

After a late Ravens field goal, the game came down to the final two minutes. Dalton found Marquise Goodwin behind the defense for the go-ahead touchdown with under two minutes left, but the Ravens were able to mount their own scoring drive to take back the lead and shock the fans in attendance with a victory.

The game itself was a gut punch, though there were standout players that kept the Bears in this for as long as they were. Here are this week’s studs and duds from Sunday’s loss.

WATCH: Bears fans start ‘Fire Nagy’ chants after loss to Ravens

Bears fans are done with Matt Nagy.

Bears fans are done with Matt Nagy. Although, that’s been the case for several weeks now.

But Chicago’s loss to the Ravens on Sunday, their fifth straight, seemed to encapsulate everything that’s wrong with the Nagy era and was the perfect game to showcase exactly why Nagy shouldn’t survive the season.

The Bears couldn’t defeat Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley and lost a 16-13 heartbreaker to fall to 3-7 on the season. The offense continued to struggle, even despite a pair of touchdowns from Andy Dalton, who relieved an injured Justin Fields.

Despite the defense’s best effort over the last month — including Robert Quinn’s 3.5 sacks — they ultimately couldn’t hold off a late rally by the Ravens, who booted a game-winning field goal with less than 30 seconds remaining.

The boo birds were out in full force Sunday at Soldier Field, where fans were caught starting a “Fire Matt Nagy” chant. Which isn’t the first time this has happened this season.

At this point, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Nagy won’t return in 2022. And if he does, God help the Bears organization.

After George McCaskey and Ted Phillips defended the decision to move forward with Nagy following the 2020 season, there’s no defending a second five-game losing streak in as many seasons. Even they have to know that.

The Bears have never fired a head coach midseason. But if Chicago manages to give the winless Lions their first win of the season, all bets are off.

Robert Quinn calls Bears’ loss to Ravens ‘sickening’ and ‘a punch to the gut’

Bears OLB Robert Quinn had a career day with 3.5 sacks, but another brutal loss left him sickened.

The expectation for Sunday’s game between the Bears and Ravens was for Baltimore to prevail, and there weren’t many that would argue against it.

But that changed when Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was inactive as he battled an illness, which made way for Tyler Huntley to make his first NFL start.

Suddenly, the Bears were dealt a huge break and a game that was once considered a difficult win became easier. Until kickoff.

While things were ugly early for the Bears, the same was true for the Ravens, and Chicago’s defense was able to feast. Bears outside linebacker Robert Quinn dominated in Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, where he had a career-high 3.5 sacks, 5 tackles, including 3 for a loss, and 4 QB hits.

With that kind of defensive effort, coupled with Roquan Smith’s impressive outing and Andy Dalton’s two touchdowns off the bench, you’d figure the Bears would’ve found a way to win the game despite some ugliness along the way.

But that wasn’t the case.

Even after quarterback Dalton threw what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown to receiver Marquise Goodwin, the Bears defense couldn’t hang on and allowed the Ravens to boot the game-winning field goal in a 16-13 loss for Chicago.

Quinn called the loss “sickening” and “a punch to the gut,” which appeared to be written all over Quinn’s face as described by one Bears beat writer.

The Bears have now dropped to 3-7 after their fifth consecutive loss of the season, the second year in a row that Chicago has lost five straight. And even with the Lions on the horizon, there’s a chance the Bears could hand Detroit their first win of the season on Thanksgiving, especially if this continues.

Perhaps losing six straight games — including to the winless Lions on Thanksgiving — for the second consecutive season would be enough to end the Matt Nagy era once and for all.
