Packers make Jaylon Smith signing official, place Chauncey Rivers on IR

The Packers announced two expected roster moves on Thursday.

The Green Bay Packers announced two expected roster moves on Thursday.

The team made official the signing of linebacker Jaylon Smith and also placed outside linebacker Chauncey Rivers on injured reserve.

Smith signed a one-year deal to join the Packers after being released by the Dallas Cowboys. He will wear No. 9. A second-round pick in 2016 who missed his entire rookie season while recovering from a significant knee injury, Smith has since played in all 68 games over the last five seasons. He was a Pro Bowler in 2018 and 2019.

Rivers, a backup edge rusher, tore his ACL during Wednesday’s practice and will miss the rest of the 2021 season. He played 54 snaps on defense for the Packers during the first four weeks of the season.

To accommodate Smith’s taking No. 9, practice squad kicker JJ Molson switched to No. 11.

The Packers roster is currently at 52 players, with defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster still on the COVID-19 reserve list.

Packers OLB Chauncey Rivers tears ACL, will miss rest of season

The Packers will lose backup OLB Chauncey Rivers for the rest of the season after he tore his ACL during Wednesday’s practice.

The potential of a serious injury for Chauncey Rivers is now confirmed: The Green Bay Packers outside linebacker suffered a torn ACL during Wednesday’s practice, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Rivers will go on injured reserve and miss the rest of the 2021 season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported news of Rivers’ injury.

According to Demovsky, the injury happened on the second-to-last play of practice on Wednesday. The Packers listed Rivers on the team’s initial injury report of Week 5.

A backup outside linebacker, Rivers played 54 snaps on defense and 44 more on special teams during the Packers’ first four games. He was first claimed off of waivers from the Ravens in August.

The Packers are already without Za’Darius Smith and will now have to look into making an addition at outside linebacker. It’s possible the team could promote Tipa Galeai from the practice squad if an appealing outside option isn’t available.

Rivers will become the sixth Packers player to go on injured reserve.

Packers OLB Chauncey Rivers potentially has significant knee injury

The Packers could be losing another edge rusher to a significant injury. This time, it’s backup Chauncey Rivers.

The depth at outside linebacker for the Green Bay Packers is taking another hit.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, backup edge rusher Chauncey Rivers suffered a potentially significant knee injury during Wednesday’s practice and is expected to head to injured reserve.

Rivers was added to the injury report on Wednesday.

The Packers are already without veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith, who is on injured reserve with a back injury that required surgery.

Rivers was originally claimed off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens in August. He made the 53-man roster to start the season and has played 54 defensive snaps and 44 special teams snaps over the Packers’ first four games.

Without both Rivers and Smith, the Packers would be down to Preston Smith, Rashan Gary, Jonathan Garvin and La’Darius Hamilton at outside linebacker on the active roster. Tipa Galeai is on the practice squad. Randy Ramsey is also on injured reserve.

The Packers signed cornerback Rasul Douglas on Wednesday and are adding linebacker Jaylon Smith on Thursday, but an addition at outside linebacker might be required.

Ravens officially sign LB Jake Ryan, 3 UDFAs

The Baltimore Ravens make their deal with free-agent linebacker Jake Ryan official as well as their deals with three more UDFAs.

The Baltimore Ravens keep marching forward in their quest to build out their 90-man roster. Though they had agreed to terms with linebacker Jake Ryan, the Ravens made it official after he passed a physical, according to a press release from the team.

Baltimore also signed three more undrafted free agents, bringing their count to eight officially under contract. These three players add to their 10-man 2020 NFL Draft class:

  • OLB/DE Chauncey Rivers, Mississippi State
  • WR Michael Dereus, Georgetown
  • C Sean Pollard, Clemson

Ryan adds valuable experience to what had been the Ravens’ weakest unit before the 2020 NFL Draft. With the addition of Patrick Queen in the first round and Malik Harrison in the third round, Baltimore now has a wealth of young talent as well as a few veteran options at their disposal for the upcoming season.

Ryan has had an injury-filled career, first with the Green Bay Packers for three seasons and then two years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over five seasons in the NFL, Ryan has played in just 45 of 80 possible games. But when on the field, Ryan has been productive as a run defender, notching 213 combined tackles along with one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

The three UDFAs add depth to some positions that are expected to have fierce competition in training camp. But with a history of at least one UDFA making the 53-man roster for 16 consecutive years, it’s a group that bears watching.

Rivers joins an outside linebacker group that isn’t very deep and has no definitive starter beyond Matthew Judon. Jaylon Ferguson and Tyus Bowser figure to compete for the starting job opposite Judon but any backup role is firmly up in the air among the rest of the roster. The Ravens are hoping to see Rivers put up the type of stats he did at Mississippi State, where he posted eight tackles for a loss and five sacks as a defensive end in 2019.

Dereus joins a group of wide receivers that are becoming increasingly deep after Baltimore has spent two picks in each of the 2019 and 2020 NFL Draft. But there are still expected to be a major competition for likely one or two roster spots at the position, as well as time on the practice squad. Over 11 games in 2019, Dereus caught 41 passes for 726 yards and five touchdowns.

Pollard adds much-needed depth at center where last year’s starter, Matt Skura, is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury. He’ll join Patrick Mekari and Colon-Castillo as UDFAs at the position behind the presumptive starter Skura. If Skura isn’t fully healthy to start training camp, the Ravens will likely push the other three to compete for the starting job.

Ex-Georgia DE, Last Chance U’s Chauncey Rivers signs UDFA deal

Ex Georgia football player Chauncey Rivers, known for his appearance on Netflix’s Last Chance U, has signed an undrafted free agent deal.

Ex-Georgia defensive lineman Chauncey Rivers, a 4-star recruit in the class of 2015 out of Stone Mountain, has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Baltimore Ravens.

After being arrested on marijuana charges for the third time in seven months, Rivers was dismissed from the Georgia program in May of his freshman year.

He transferred to East Mississippi Community College, where he was featured on season two of Netflix’s Last Chance U and played under coach Buddy Stephens.

After his time at EMCC, he transferred to Mississippi State. Rivers sat out the 2017 season due to being academically ineligible. In 2018 at Mississippi State, Rivers played in all 13 games for the Bulldogs.

In 2019, Rivers started every game at defensive end.
