Thunder agree to terms with reserve point guard Chasson Randle

Randle last played for the Golden State Warriors last season.

For Thunder general manager Sam Presti, the beginning of the NBA season doesn’t necessarily mean that his work in reshaping the roster and the franchise’s identity ends. Quite the opposite.

On Wednesday afternoon, Oklahoma City agreed to terms with three-year point guard Chasson Randle, who last appeared in an NBA for the Golden State Warriors during the 2019-20 season.

Randle, who also played for the Knicks and Sixers, joins the rebuilding Thunder and will likely remain with the team only through the end of training camp. Considering the priority that the team has seemingly placed on getting younger, it seems unlike that Randle would figure into the club’s long-term plans.

News of Randle’s signing was first reported by Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes.

The move to sign Randle came shortly after the club announced that it requested waivers on Zylan Cheatham, who was acquired in the trade that saw Steven Adams land in New Orleans.

For sure, it won’t be the last roster move made by the Thunder prior to finalizing its regular-season roster.

VIDEO: Some Warriors players return to Chase Center to practice

The Golden State Warriors tweeted a video of five players in Chase Center.

The Golden State Warriors have returned to Chase Center.

The week after the city of San Francisco gave the Warriors permission to use the arena, with a set of guidelines, the team Twitter account posted a video with a handful of players practicing.

Steph Curry, Damion Lee, Kevon Looney, Chasson Randle and Juan Toscano-Anderson were in the video, with Looney riding an elliptical machine.

The NBA may not be back, but in seeing these videos, there’s sense that basketball has returned.

In late April, the NBA released guidelines for how facilities would be allowed to be opened to players. Rules included no more than four players were allowed in the facility at the same time, and no group activity was allowed.

Chasson Randle taking online classes during quarantine, plans to open clothing brand

Golden State Warriors guard Chasson Randle is one of many NBA players taking classes through Yellowbrick. He plans to open a clothing brand called Volhard.

Golden State Warriors point guard Chasson Randle has proven to be a dedicated student.

He graduated Stanford in three years majoring in African and African-American studies. He also began pursing a Master’s Degree in psychology, a process that was interrupted by 2015 NBA Draft preparations, according to Sports Illustrated.

Now, under quarantine, he’s one of the many NBA players taking online classes.

About 35 players including Andre Drummond and Lou Williams are taking classes through Yellowbrick, which works with industry leaders to offer courses that can be completed in six to 12 weeks, according to Sports Illustrated.

It took just three weeks for Randle to complete his selected course called “Fashion Essentials.” He’s planning to open a clothing brand in August.

The brand will be called Volhard, which “loosely translates to the Dutch word for ‘perseverance,'” SI wrote.

The first theme will be based on the the African Ndebele tribe and its “perseverance through colonialism,” SI wrote.

“I think it’s something that’s definitely universal,” Randle said to SI.

Other Yellowbrick courses include “Fundamentals of Global Sports Management,” “Music Industry Essentials,” “Sneaker Essentials” and “Streetwear Essentials,” Sports Illustrated wrote.

Randle has one day left on his 10-day contract with the Warriors.

He has seen minimal action in his three appearances, only attempting four shots and scoring five total points in a little more than 13 minutes per game.

Randle told Sports Illustrated there are no guarantees on a future deal once the 10-day expires.

Warriors to sign former Stanford product Chasson Randle to 10-day deal

As the Warriors seek help in their backcourt, they’ve turned to a familiar Bay Area face.

With the Warriors desperately needing some help in their backcourt, former Stanford University product Chasson Randle is expected to provide some temporary relief.

On Sunday, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony broke the news that Randle, who has been competing in the Chinese Basketball Association, will be released from his contract and will sign with Golden State. The news comes courtesy of Randle’s agent, Darrell Comer.

According to Givony, Randle is one of many former NBA players whose careers and livelihoods have been put on hold due to the Coronavirus outbreak. As the disease has infected more than 87,000 people worldwide, it has had a significant impact on the Chinese economy, including its professional sports contests. The disease itself has disproportionately impacted China, as the epicenter of the crisis is Wuhan in the Hubei province.

The following comes from Givony’s report:

Randle was one of approximately 40 American players — which include former NBA players Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and others — in limbo as the CBA has indefinitely suspended its league due to the coronavirus outbreak… The league is not expected to resume until early April, if at all…

Other prominent names included in the report are Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson and Tyler Hansbrough. If the resolution reached between Randle and his Chinese club are any indication, there might be an influx of other NBA-caliber talents soon hitting the NBA free agency market.

In the immediate future, though, the Warriors have someone they can turn to in the backcourt, and he’s a familiar face to those in touch with Bay Area hoops.
