49ers WR Deebo Samuel reacts to Chase Young trade

Deebo Samuel told @UpAndAdamsShow about his reaction to to the #49ers trading for Chase Young.

It sounds like 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel will be back with the team when they return from their Week 9 bye, and he’ll do so with a new teammate. San Francisco ahead of Tuesday’s deadline acquired defensive end Chase Young from the Washington Commanders.

Samuel in an interview on ‘Up and Adams’ with host Kay Adams talked about his reaction to the trade.

“It’s just crazy all the guys we’ve got on the D-line,” Samuel told Adams. “And just to add him and just the impact his career that he done had so far. Just for him to be a part of the team is kinda, you know what I’m sayin, amazing. We already got good guys out there on the D-Line right now, just to add him is an extra little up that I think we need.”

It didn’t take long for Samuel to reach out to the team’s newest defensive lineman. He said he stopped his on-field workout to reach out to Young.

“I actually called him after I got the news because I was out there on the field working out,” Samuel said. “I was like, ‘bro, you ready to come out here?’ And he was like, ‘man I was just on the massage table and just get a call that I was going to the Niners. I was like (expletive) man I’m ready to go.'”

Complementary football has been key for the 49ers during their deep playoff runs in three of the last four years. Samuel and Young could be a duo that helps San Francisco get back to that after struggling with it the last three weeks.

Samuel should help an ailing 49ers offense in a variety of ways, while Young should bolster a pass rush that’s had a hard time getting quarterbacks on the ground.

Their first chance to practice together will be ahead of Week 10. There’ll be a bonus practice early in the week, then the club will begin its real practices Wednesday and it sounds like both Samuel and Young will be in attendance.

Chase Young trade officially announced by 49ers

The #49ers officially announced the Chase Young trade.

The 49ers on Wednesday officially announced their acquisition of defensive end Chase Young from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a special compensatory selection in the third round of the 2024 draft.

Nothing surprising showed up in the official announcement. All reporting indicated that the pick the team acquired when Ran Carthon joined the Titans as their general manager would be heading to Washington in the deal. San Francisco held onto its own third-round pick, and holds another comp pick in that round.

Young joins a loaded defensive line that struggled to get consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The 49ers as a team rank third in total pressures according to Pro Football Reference, but they’re tied for 18th in sacks. The hope is that Young will provide a much-needed boost on the side opposite Nick Bosa where quarterbacks will have a little less time to throw the ball.

San Francisco has to clean up its missed tackles and some mistakes in coverage if it’s going to reach its full defensive potential, but Young should certainly improve the pass rush right away. From there the club is hoping the other things will fall into place.

Twitter reacts to 49ers’ trade for DE Chase Young

Twitter was full of takes as the San Francisco 49ers landed a deal with Washington for DE Chase Young.

The San Francisco 49ers, who already have a fierce pass rush with Nick Bosa and Javon Hargrave, decided they needed even more firepower.

The 49ers traded with the Washington Commanders Tuesday for the services of defensive end Chase Young. The former 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year joins his former college teammate at Ohio State to wreak havoc in the Bay Area. All it cost the 49ers to add more to their impressive defensive line was a third-round pick.

Twitter was on point with takes as some NFL fans experienced JOMO seeing Young go for that price. Here are some of the best.

49ers still loaded in 2024 draft after Chase Young trade

The #49ers sent a 3rd-round comp pick to the Commanders for Chase Young. They’re still loaded in next year’s draft:

The 49ers on Tuesday made a splash just ahead of the trade deadline. They sent a compensatory third-round pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for defensive end Chase Young.

Young will join an already loaded, albeit disappointing, defensive line for San Francisco. His 5.0 sacks in 2023 are more than any other player on the 49ers.

Despite sending a third-round pick in the deal, the 49ers still hold a pair of third-round selections next year thanks to the compensatory selections they acquired when Ran Carthon joined the Titans as their general manager.

Here’s their full slate of projected picks in next year’s draft:

Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Round 3 (Compensatory)
Round 4
Round 4 (via Dallas)
Round 5 (Compensatory)
Round 5 (Compensatory)
Round 6 (Compensatory)
Round 7
Round 7 (via Denver)

The 49ers lost a sixth-round choice in the deal to acquire Randy Gregory from the Broncos, but they did receive a seventh-round pick back in that trade.

The 2024 NFL draft is set to take place Thursday, April 25.

49ers bag Chase Young in massive deadline deal. Grade: A+

The 49ers’ blockbuster trade for Chase Young is one of those moves that’s impossible to criticize in the short term.

The Washington Commanders traded away their two foundational edge-rushers on Tuesday, Montez Sweat was traded to the Chicago Bears in a move that had a lot of people shaking their heads, and then, the San Francisco 49ers swept in and got Chase Young for a 2024 third-round pick, which has Steve Wilks’ defensive line looking like THIS:

Holy cats. How did this happen? The Commanders are clearly building (re: tanking) for the future, and the 49ers, who allowed 13.6 points per game in their 5-0 opening win streak, and 24.0 points per game in their recent 0-3 slide, have another impact guy on a defense that has underperformed of late.

The 49ers also now have the second-overall pick in the 2019 draft (Bosa) and the second-overall pick in the 2020 draft (Young) — both from Ohio State. This season, Bosa has 44 total pressures, ranking third in the NFL behind Maxx Crosby and Aidan Hutchinson, and Young has 29 pressures, tied for eighth in the league.

That should mean very, very bad news for opposing offensive tackles.

Young’s speed to the pocket is his calling card, as he showed on this sack of Tyrod Taylor of the Giants in Week 7. Left tackle Justin Pugh didn’t have much of a response as a career offensive guard.

And on this sack of Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4, Young gave left tackle Jordan Mailata a nasty double move on his way to the quarterback.

Like Sweat, Young is in the last year of his current contract. But unlike Sweat, Young goes to an absolute contender, and a re-signing might be far more in the Cards. Given the relative lack of draft capital given, and what Young should do for San Francisco’s edges, it’s hard not to see this as a pure steal.
