UFC Fight Night 201 video: Chas Skelly TKOs Mark Striegl, plans on ‘maybe not fighting anymore’

Chas Skelly ended his career on a positive note with a highlight-reel finish at UFC Fight Night 201.

It came as a revelation to most viewers when [autotag]Chas Skelly[/autotag] was walking to the octagon at UFC Fight Night 201 that it could be his final fight.

UFC commentator Jon Anik revealed the note as Skelly (19-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) was set to compete against Mark Striegl (18-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) on Saturday’s card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, but is he really done?

Skelly scored a second-round TKO of Striegl in the featherweight bout, using an inside elbow, then a knee to inflict damage, score a knockdown and finish the fight with ground-and-pound.

After the fight, Skelly was asked by Paul Felder if it was 100 percent his final bout. Skelly flip-flopped on the topic, but was firm in the notion that his body has been breaking down in recent years, and he wants to focus on his roofing company.

“I plan on maybe not fighting anymore after this fight,” Skelly said. “It’s been a long road. I want to go out on my own terms. My body is not holding up the way it used to. I would like to stay on the roster and if they offer me something that’s interesting, then maybe.”

If Skelly did compete for the last time, he ended on a positive note. He earned his sixth stoppage out of eight career UFC wins. The replay of the finish over Striegl can be seen below (via Twitter):

It appears [autotag]Chas Skelly[/autotag] will be making the walk to the cage for the final time in February.

Skelly (18-3-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Mark Striegl[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 19, expected to take place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Both fighters confirmed the news on social media, where 36-year-old Skelly announced it will be his last fight.

“I plan to make this my last fight but will train like it’s my first! Don’t miss it!

I should be in the front but I think this picture was stolen from my opponents page! Lol.”

Skelly hasn’t competed since defeating Jordan Griffin by unanimous decision  in September 2019. He saw multiple fights canceled, including a rare one-off incident in which he made the walk to the cage against Jamall Emmers at UFC Fight Night 185 in February, but he never got to compete after Emmers experienced back spasms backstage and was pulled from the fight. Skelly was then booked to fight Mike Trizano at UFC Fight Night 194 in October but withdrew due to undisclosed reasons.

Striegl entered the UFC with a lot of steam, having built plenty of experience competing under the Pacific X-treme Combat, Universal Reality Combat Championship and ONE Championship banner. The Filipino-American sambo champion fell short in his UFC debut when he was stopped by Said Nurmagomedov in just 51 seconds in October 2020.

With the addition, the Feb. 19 lineup now includes:

  • Chad Anheliger vs. Jesse Strader
  • Austin Lingo vs. Jonathan Pearce
  • Chas Skelly vs. Mark Striegl

Jamall Emmers back spasms force UFC Fight Night 185 bout canceled as Chas Skelly stands in cage

Watch the confusion as Chas Skelly was left without a fight after he’d already made the walk to the cage.

There are last-minute fight cancellations – and then there’s what happened at UFC Fight Night 185. For the first time, a bout was canceled after one fighter made the walk to the cage.

The third fight of the card was scheduled to be [autotag]Chas Skelly[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Jamall Emmers[/autotag]. After Skelly (18-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) already was in the cage, however, Emmers (18-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) did not make the walk on his queue.

According to the broadcast, Emmers suffered back spasms backstage and was unable to compete. The broadcast also added that Emmers’ “body had shut down,” prompting Nevada Athletic Commission officials to intervene.

Ring announcer Joe Martinez made the official announcement on the microphone that the fight was canceled because of “medical reasons backstage” as Skelly awkwardly left the cage without throwing a single punch.

Although he did not compete, Skelly still was given the opportunity for a post-fight interview on the ESPN+ broadcast. Skelly used his time to make his pitch for still getting paid and wished Emmers well.

“I’m feeling like I should get my win bonus,” Skelly said. “I weighed in, I made weight, and I stepped in the cage. That’s how I feel. I hope Jamall is OK.”

Skelly, 35, has not competed in an MMA fight since September 2019 and had contemplated retirement in 2020. UFC Fight Night 185 marks his third consecutive bout cancellation.

UFC Fight Night 185 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streamed on ESPN+.

According to an Instagram post by Skelly (18-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) on Thursday, the featherweight fighter has withdrawn from his UFC on ESPN+ 27 fight against Dawson (14-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC).

I’ve been preparing for this fight for what seems like 2 whole fight camps. My mind and body were ready to go, but I guess it just wasn’t in the cards this time.”

Skelly went on to express his uncertainty what the future holds – and if fighting will even be in that future at all.

Skelly and Dawson were originally slated to square off at UFC 246 in January. However, days prior to their scheduled showdown in Las Vegas, Dawson withdrew from the bout due to an unclear drug testing-related issue. The fight was rebooked for UFC on ESPN+ 27 days later.
