Nets’ matchups vs. Hornets should warrant same result as November meeting

The Brooklyn Nets can’t afford to drop either of their upcoming games against the Charlotte Hornets.

On Sunday, the Nets have to face the always challenging Denver Nuggets. But Brooklyn has one more matchup before taking on Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic again: the Charlotte Hornets.

Actually, oddly enough, the game against Denver is sandwiched between a pair of games against Charlotte, first on the road, then back at Barclays Center on Wednesday (December 11).

As the Nets try to stay over .500 after their slow start to 2019-20, they have to take both of these games. The close proximity of the matchups does make things more challenging, but Brooklyn has to find a way to win both games against the Hornets. They truly can’t afford to take the night off in either game.

Now, an added emphasis on winning these games isn’t because the Hornets are inclined to steal a game or two. Of course, any win is helpful, but the issue is Brooklyn has a tough slate ahead.

In addition to Denver, the Nets visit the Toronto Raptors, then host the Philadelphia 76ers. Then, after four winnable games, the Nets face six playoff-caliber teams over the span of seven games, including the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat.

Knocking off lesser opponents is always a must, but when there’s a daunting stretch on the horizon, good teams always take advantage of the weak spots in their schedule — which is exactly what both games against the Hornets are for the Nets.

Prediction

Nets 113, Hornets 108

Moneyline (ML)

The Nets have won seven of their last 10 games and are 5-6 on the road this season. The Hornets are 9-14 overall and 5-6 at home. Back BROOKLYN (-139) as a slight road favorite even without Irving.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Brooklyn to win outright would profit $7.19.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Nets are 17th against the spread on the road with a mark of 5-6 and come in 0.9 points per game below the cover line. Charlotte is 6-5 ATS at home and comes in a half-point per game below the cover line.

Slightly lean toward BROOKLYN (-2.5, -106) to win by three or more points Friday. It delivers a $9.43 profit on a $10 bet.

Over/Under (O/U)

The projected total is set at 217.5 (Over: -115, Under: -106). Brooklyn averages 113 points per game and Charlotte allows 112.8 per contest. The Nets rank eighth at 102.6 possessions per game and the Hornets are 25th at 98.7. Take the OVER 217.5 (-115).

Hornets’ Devonte’ Graham is currently one of NBA’s best shot creators

Hornets guard Devonte’ Graham has had one of the most surprising starts to this season, including another stellar game on Wednesday.

Charlotte Hornets guard Devonte’ Graham has had one of the most surprising starts to this season, including another stellar game on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old put up 33 points against the Golden State Warriors behind 10 three-pointers. That was a career-high mark from downtown for Graham, who also tied the record for most three-pointers in a single game in franchise history.

Graham has been shooting the ball well all year, as he leads the Eastern Conference in total three-pointers thus far. Perhaps most impressive is the prolific rate at which he has created his own shot.

Graham has been taking more pull-up three-pointers per game (5.3) than almost anyone in the league. But he has been effective on these challenging looks, shooting 41.0 percent from three-point range.

Ricky O’Donnell wrote about this last month, comparing him to former Charlotte star Kemba Walker (via SB Nation):

“[His] ability to hit pull-up threes off the dribble makes him an especially tough cover. It should remind Hornets fans quite a bit of how Walker used to play in Charlotte… The pull-up three off the dribble is one of the toughest and most valuable shots in basketball. Graham has been remarkably good at making them so far.”

In fact, Graham (2.23) and Walker (2.37) have actually averaged nearly identical successful pull-up three-pointers per 70 possessions this season.

Graham consistently dances around the court, finding space for himself and showcasing his ability to shoot on the move without a pass from a teammate. Half of the three-pointers he has made have been unassisted, according to Cleaning the Glass, which ranks in the 94th percentile among combo guards.

Even before the highlight performance against Golden State, this was the full list of players who had scored more points on unassisted three-pointers than Graham (108): James Harden (243), Damian Lillard (144), Luka Doncic (141) and Trae Young (135).

Those are some of the best shot creators in the NBA and Graham has found himself right up there among the elite.

Overall, few in the league have scored off the dribble as often as Graham has in 2019-20.

He has been efficient, too, averaging 1.14 points per possession when shooting jump shots off the dribble. That ranks in the 88th percentile among all players so far this season, per Synergy. He has accumulated 142 points in this manner, which is third-best in the Eastern Conference.

He has been among the top-tier scorers in the NBA, solidifying himself as an early candidate for the Most Improved Player award.

Hornets, Devonte’ Graham sting Warriors for another road loss, 106-91

Warriors drop fourth straight game of their road trip behind a big shooting night from the Hornets guard, Devonte’ Graham.

The Warriors went into their current road trip playing some of their best basketball of 2019; now, after four games into the trip, the team is 0-4 after a 106-91 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

Even with the team being understaffed with injuries and inexperience, the Warriors have played tough against favored teams. However, on their current road swing, that grit has faded, and the Warriors have looked like the team their 4-19 record reflects.

The Warriors were able to grab a lead in the third quarter in Charlotte, but things flipped when Draymond Green and D’Angelo Russell left the floor. The third period ended with the Hornets leading by 10, and the Warriors could never claw back their way back.

The Warriors backcourt couldn’t hang with Charlotte’s duo of Devonte’ Graham and Terry Rozier. The Buzz City pairing combined for 58 of the Hornets 106 points. Rozier and Graham added 17 assists, 14 rebounds, and five steals to their dominant combined performance.

D’Angelo Russell Returns

The Warriors got another All-Star back from injury with the return of D’Angelo Russell after he missed nine games with a sprained right thumb. Russell led the Warriors in scoring with 18 points, with 13 coming in the second quarter.

Russell was a minute restriction and only played 25 minutes in his first game back. The Warriors will continue to be patient with their 23-year-old guard as he builds up his conditioning and rhythm.

Career night for Devonte’ Graham

The former second-round pick, Devonte’ Graham knocked down a career-high 10-three pointers against the Warriors, suitable for a game-high 33 points. The Warriors had no answer for Graham, who was just off completing a triple-double with nine assists and career-high seven rebounds. The Kansas Jayhawk product is having a stellar season in year two of NBA action, adding another impressive performance in his breakout campaign, this time against Golden State.

Prediction

Hornets 113, Bucks 108

Moneyline (ML)

Both teams are coming off victories Friday night with the Hornets completing a home-and-home sweep of the Detroit Pistons with a 110-107 victory in the Motor City and the Bucks extending their win streak to 10 in a row with a 119-110 road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The HORNETS (+825) are huge underdogs on the road while the Bucks are favored at -1429. Charlotte is 4-7 on the road and Milwaukee is 7-1 at home, but the visitors are worth a small wager with the potential return of more than 8x your investment. The Hornets are currently in a playoff slot while the Bucks are first in the Eastern Conference, but this upset is well within the range of possibilities.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Hornets to win outright returns a profit of $82.50.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The far safer, but less profitable, play is to back the HORNETS (+15.5, -125) against the spread. Charlotte will need to stay within 13 points in a loss or win outright. Just three of the Bucks’ last 10 wins were decided by more than 10 points and the back-to-back situation further lowers their chances of being able to pull away in a blowout.

Charlotte is 11-9 ATS overall and 6-5 on the road. Milwaukee is 8-11 overall and just 3-5 at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 226.5 (+105). The two teams combine to average 225 points for per game while allowing 223 per game, and the second half of the back-to-back for both sides will further hamper the offensive output. Milwaukee is 9-9-1 against the O/U while Charlotte is 11-9-0, but falls an average of 0.4 points below the projected totals.

Zach LaVine’s insane 3-pointer (his 13th!) ends frantic Bulls comeback

This comes after the Bulls coach benched and openly criticized Zach LaVine.

Zach LaVine faced tremendous scrutiny heading into the Chicago Bulls’ matchup against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night. Bulls coach Jim Boylen benched LaVine on Friday for making “egregious” defensive errors on Friday. LaVine’s performance on Saturday changed the conversation.

He scored a franchise-record 13 3-pointers, with the 13th coming at the buzzer for the win. The Hornets needed to in bound the ball with seven seconds left. That’s when Bulls guard Ryan Arcidiacono knocked the ball free from Hornets guard Devonte’ Graham under the hoop, and LaVine grabbed it off the court. He then frantically ran to the 3-point line to set up a fading shot. The Bulls won, 126-125. LaVine could  have scored a field goal to tie it — but he boldly took a challenging shot to take the lead.

LaVine had 49 points on the night while shooting 17 of 28 from the field and 13 of 17 from the 3-point line. That final 3-point play left the folks in Charlotte in a bad place. Their record falls to 6-11.

Here’s the call from the Hornets’ broadcast.

It was an impressive and desperate finish for LaVine and the Bulls, who have the same record as Charlotte at 6-11. Maybe Boylen should show LaVine some tough love more often.

Hornets GM Mitch Kupchak spotted at NBL game to scout Ball, Hampton

Hornets GM Mitch Kupchak was spotted in attendance for Sunday’s contest between the Breakers and 36ers as part o a scouting trip.

Within days of a report stating Warriors general manager Bob Myers would soon be traveling to Australia to scout R.J. Hampton and LaMelo Ball, yet another NBA executive was spotted in attendance on Sunday.

Current Charlotte general manager and President of Basketball Operations Mitch Kupchak was caught by cameras during Sunday’s contest between the New Zealand Breakers and Adelaide 36ers. Hampton, one of the premier Next Stars, plays for the Breakers.

With Ball set to play on Monday, Kupchak will almost certainly also take in Illawarra’s game against the Cairns Taipans.

The Hornets have not been linked to Ball in terms of scouting or interest up until Kupchak’s appearance in Australia this weekend. Charlotte has young guards in Malik Monk and Devonte Graham and high-priced signing Terry Rozier.

Ball would provide a face of the rebuild along with PJ Washington and Miles Bridges. But his overlap with other players on the roster would make his fit tricky. Hampton would be less of an awkward fit because of his ability to play both guard positions, but it would lead to a backcourt crowded with young prospects in need of time to develop.

Former Michigan State star Miles Bridges sets new NBA career high with 31 points

Charlotte Hornets sophomore Miles Bridges is starting to establish himself as a starter in the NBA.

[jwplayer ofLF0moh]

Almost one month ago, I wrote a story on Charlotte Hornets sophomore and former Michigan State Basketball star Miles Bridges setting a career-high in scoring against the Los Angeles Lakers with 23 points. Tonight, Bridges set a new career-high when he dropped 31 points against the Washington Wizards.

To go along with his 31 points, Bridges also had 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and he hit three three-pointers on the night. Of course, the Hornets lost to another bottom-feeder in the East, but it’s great to see Bridges performing so well with his increased role on a Hornets team that will finish as one of the worst teams in the league.

Bridges is now averaging 11.7 points-per-game on the season to go along with 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists. The Hornets might suck this year, but Bridges is already establishing himself as a legitimate starter at the pro level, and as a Spartan fan I love to see it.

NBA odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Friday at 1 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Wizards 123, Hornets 114

Moneyline (ML)

The WIZARDS (-278) are a safe choice Friday with both teams largely unaffected by injury and able to use their full lineups. Washington is coming off a 138-132 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday and is 2-3 at home. Charlotte is 3-5 on the road and is coming off consecutive losses to the Toronto Raptors (132-96) and Brooklyn Nets (101-91), both of which were on the road.

Both teams enter off a rest day, further allowing them to use their best players as much as possible. The Hornets’ average point differential of minus-7.9 ranks second-worst in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards are minus-1.4, but they score nearly 15 more points than the Hornets on average.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Wizards to win outright returns a profit of $3.60.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Save yourself some money on the required investment and back the WIZARDS (-5.5, -129) with the points. They’ll need to win by six or more for the same $10 bet to fetch a reward of $7.75.

Washington is 8-3 ATS overall and 3-2 on home court. The Hornets are 8-7 overall and 5-3 on the road. The Wizards rank fifth in the NBA with a pace of 105.08 possessions per game while the Hornets are just 23rd at 100.17 average possessions. Washington will be able to pull away late to cover comfortably.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total of 232.5 is the highest on Friday’s slate, but we’re still taking the OVER (-129). The Wizards are the only team in the Association allowing more than 120 points per game (121.1) and only the Milwaukee Bucks are scoring more than Washington’s 119.7 PPG. The Wiz are 7-4-1 against the O/U and top the projections by an average of 12.5 points per game.

Charlotte is 7-8 against the O/U while falling an average of 1.7 points shy of the number, but the Hornets are far from a defensive juggernaut (112.8 PPG allowed) and will need to play up to Washington’s pace.

Nets taking ‘next man up’ approach with Kyrie Irving, Caris LeVert injured

Spencer Dinwiddie took over for the Nets in the win over the Bulls. Jarrett Allen did the same on Wednesday against the Hornets.

Every win is important in the NBA, but with Brooklyn’s slow start to the 2019-20 season, there’s an extra sense of urgency for the Nets.

Things didn’t get easier when they lost Caris LeVert due to the damaged ligaments in his right thumb, which led to surgery. Then pull Kyrie Irving out of the lineup for three games (right shoulder impingement) and the Nets have all hands on deck.

Spencer Dinwiddie has been the one constant for the Nets during this stretch, which was part of the problem for Brooklyn on Monday. In the two wins — Chicago Bulls on Saturday and Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday — multiple Nets have stepped up.

On Wednesday, Taurean Prince (20 points and eight rebounds), DeAndre Jordan (14 points and seven rebounds) and, most of all, Jarrett Allen (22 points and 17 rebounds) played well, in addition to Dinwiddie (20 points, eight assists).

Following the win, Allen expressed Brooklyn’s approach without Irving and LeVert to YES Network’s Michael Grady:

It’s been a slow process. Ya know, having Caris and Kyrie out, it’s a little tough. But at the end of the day, it’s next man up and we’ show that tonight.

Additionally, the Nets have talked about both their chemistry and energy as being problems to start the season. Allen told Grady the Nets were able to address one of those issues.

Consistent energy. We came out in the third quarter, playing hard, and we took it to the fourth.
