Wisconsin offers promising FBS transfer wide receiver

Wisconsin extended an offer to Charlotte transfer wide receiver O’Mega Blake on Monday.

Since Dec. 12, Colorado State, Florida State, Arkansas, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Utah and Wisconsin have all extended offers to the experienced Division I pass-catcher.

Blake registered 32 receptions, 795 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 12 contests with Charlotte in 2024. His most impressive performance arrived on Nov. 23 against Florida Atlantic: 205 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Prior to his stint with the 49ers, Blake spent three seasons at South Carolina from 2021-23. There, he reeled in 20 catches for 251 yards and two touchdowns in 16 career appearances.

As a recruit, he was considered the No. 9 player in South Carolina, No. 108 at wide receiver, and No. 697 in the country for the class of 2021 by 247Sports.

Blake becomes the latest target to join Wisconsin’s transfer portal interest pool. He, Kansas State redshirt freshman wide receiver Tre Spivey and Cal freshman pass-catcher Nyziah Hunter are players UW has targeted to fill the program’s need at outside receiver.

UW is also reportedly planned a visit for former top-55 overall recruit and Ohio State wide receiver Jayden Ballard.

The Badgers are still looking for pass-catching weapons with several primary needs already addressed.

Charlotte OT transfer gets Michigan State football offer

MSU is in pursuit of a high value offensive tackle transfer

Michigan State football landed a commitment from Oregon State offensive line transfer Luka Vincic over the weekend and now the Spartans are on the lookout for two to three more players up front.

A very quality offensive tackle has received the latest offer from the Spartans.

Charlotte offensive line transfer Kendall Stanley received an offer from MSU on Sunday night.

Stanley played 706 snaps, playing every game as the starting right tackle for the 49ers. PFF graded him very favorably, rating him as a 77.3 overall player, 74.1 run blocking and 75.6 pass blocking. A 6-foot-5, 290 pound tackle, he is a starting caliber player.

A poor Memphis player got nailed right in the groin by a ref throwing a flag

OUCH.

You never want to have a flag thrown your team’s way, but you especially don’t want a flag thrown your way.

That’s what happened to poor Memphis wide receiver Joseph Scates, who got an errant flag thrown right into his groin by a referee with very poor aim during his team’s overtime win against Charlotte on Saturday.

It’s the kind of below-the-belt hazard that you just cannot predict, as Scates admirably tried to walk off the unfortunate contact but clearly looked like he was in a bit of pain.

The flag just nailed him right where it hurts the most, and you have to feel for him in this incredibly unfortunate moment.

The ref who threw this flag needs to watch out next time, lest he accidentally nail somebody else in the groin the next time he throws a penalty flag.

At the least, Scates should get, like, one gimme illegal shift or something that’s not called on him in a game of his choosing. He deserves it after this encounter with officiating.

Charlotte accidentally blocked one of its own field goals while playing Tulsa

It’s actually pretty impressive to accidentally block your own team’s field goal.

Blocking a field goal when you’re on defense is a great way to show your skills. Blocking a field goal when you’re on offense is … not good.

That was sadly the case for Charlotte against Tulsa on Saturday as what looked to be an easy field goal from 39 yards out for the 49ers went totally awry.

On the play in question, punter Grant Gonya looked to have still been still holding the ball when kicker Kyle Cunanan went in for the attempt. The result was a ball flailing wildly out of range, and three points lost on the field.

This is the kind of brutal mental error that we could all make, but it just so happened to be the Charlotte holder on Saturday who had it happen to them.

Hey, we’re all human, and Gonya deserves the benefit of the doubt here because holding the ball on field goal attempts is a much harder job than it looks because of how quickly the snap comes in compared to how much time you have to set the ball for the attempt.

It’s a split-second operation that takes a lot of practice, and Gonya surely can do it better than most if he’s doing it at the collegiate level. However, it is pretty funny to accidentally block your own team’s field goal attempt, and the 49ers still pulled off a late-game comeback to win 33-26 in double overtime.

Charlotte has plenty to celebrate after this big victory, and it’s good that we can all get a good laugh about of this moment on a day where it thankfully didn’t matter too much to the 49ers either way at the end.

In the meantime, somebody give Gonya a good pat on the back and tell him that it happens to the best of us. It’s absolutely not the end of the world.

A UTEP defensive lineman recovered a fumble for an awesome 100-yard touchdown

Look at the big guy go!

It’s been a good day for college football’s big boys.

Building on the momentum from North Dakota State’s four-fullback touchdown play, University of Texas at El Paso senior defensive end Jadrian Taylor got in on the fun and scored a touchdown with a highlight play of his own.

To start the fourth quarter of UTEP’s 41-35 win over Charlotte, Taylor recovered a fumble at the Miners goal line and rumbled 100 yards across the field to score a defensive touchdown.

It was quite a glorious jaunt for the pass rusher, one that helped 3-3 UTEP get the dub and get back to .500 on the season.

Taylor had three sacks in the UTEP win and was rightfully proud of his stellar performance.

Do your thing, Kamo. You made big guys everywhere proud Saturday night.

Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022

The 49ers are still trying to find the consistency needed to be a bigger factor in Conference USA.

The breakthrough bowl season in 2019 was fun, the 2-4 season in 2020 was because of 2020 – there weren’t any bad losses among the four – and last year a bowl game was well within each, but the defense went bye-bye over a three game losing streak to close out the year.

The experience is there to be better after a decent season, but it’ll be all about the improvement on the other side of the ball.

The new-look Conference USA schedule just got a lot easier, but it’s still going to be a fight to get close to six wins if the D isn’t far, far better. But first …

Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022: Offense

Again, overall the offense wasn’t all that bad. It would’ve been nice to get more out of the ground game, but the attack blew a tire during the middle of the season. Even so, there were enough times when the offense did the job and the other side didn’t keep up its end of the bargain.

Eight starters are expected back to the spread attack that keeps things moving and does a great job of controlling the time of possession. It starts with …

Veteran quarterback Chris Reynolds returns for yet another year. He’s not all that big, but he’s a good runner, knows what he’s doing with the passing game, and he doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter.

The tip three receivers are back with a good-sized group – the 49ers recruit to a receiver type that can get down the field. The work gets spread out among Grant DuBose, Victor Tucker, and Elijah Spencer – they’re all 6-2.

All of the top rushers are back. Calvin Camp and former Iowa transfer Shadrick Byrd for a good rotation – they combined for close to 1,300 yards and seven touchdowns – to go along with Reynolds’ ability to get on the move. They all get to work behind a smallish line that gets four starters back and isn’t bad at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Charlotte 49ers Preview 2022: Defense

The defense had a few problems. It was among the worst in the country in pass efficiency defense, allowed 465 yards per game overall, was the worst in Conference USA at getting into the backfield, and it allowed 34 points per game. Other than that, everything was great.

At least the 49ers have enough experience to build around, but overall this group has to be far better considering the time it gets to rest thanks to the offense. Making matters worse …

Three of the top four tacklers are done with the linebacking corps needing to all but start over. This is a smallish group that can move, which is fine as long as there’s production in the backfield. Top sacker Markees Watts is back on the defensive front, but he can’t do it alone.

There’s decent size in the interior line for the rotation. Watts is just 218 pounds and Michael Kelly is 225 pounds on the other side – again, the smallish size is fine as long as everyone is disruptive. Central Michigan transfer Amir Siddiq will play a big role in the rotation.

It wasn’t just that the 49ers allowed teams to bomb away too easily. It’s that there were too many big downfield plays without enough takeaways or key stops. However, the secondary should be an early strength if it’s helped by any sort of a pass rush. The veteran safeties will make a whole lot of plays

Old Dominion vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

Can the 49ers actually close the deal?

They’ve been on the cusp of bowl eligibility for the last few weeks, but they’ve lost four of their las five games even though the offense is working.

The passing attack has hit 245 yards or more in four of the last five games, there’s just enough of a running game to control the clock, and considering the problems with consistency, forcing takeaways would be a big deal.

For all of the good things Old Dominion is doing, it has a turnover problem with two or more in seven straight games before last week’s win over Middle Tennessee – which, strangely enough, came against the nation’s leading defense in takeaways.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Old Dominion has been red hot.

It was a lost season with 1-6 start, but that’s okay. The program didn’t play in 2020, it was going to take a while to get everything going, and then things started to cluck.

The passing game was good, there was a nice balance, and from out of nowhere came a four-game winning streak to get in a position to make this a special season.

The defense has been great against the run, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte’s defense can’t stop the run.

The winner of this goes bowling. At home, Old Dominion will complete the phenomenal turnaround to its season by running the ball without a problem against the porous Charlotte defensive front.

Marshall vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

Marshall might have lost to UAB last week, but it’s still deep in the hunt for the Conference USA East title.

Win this week, and a win next week over WKU gets it done.

The Thundering Herd passing game should work with a ton of time to operate – Charlotte doesn’t generate much of a pass rush – and the ground game should get back on track after taking a few weeks off.

On the other side, the Marshall pass defense should hold up. Charlotte can’t win if it doesn’t throw well, and now it’s going against a D that allowed just 182 passing yards per game. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Charlotte Will Win

Marshall can’t handle losing the turnover battle.

It was able to win the first two games of the year despite being on the wrong side of the stat, but it lost to East Carolina after giving the ball away three times, it was -4 against Middle Tennessee, and last week it was -1 against UAB. Against the teams that can hang around, that appears to be just that little bit of a difference.

Charlotte isn’t great in the turnover battle, but it’s usually able to keep things even. It’s great at dominating the time of possession fight, it’s good at moving the chains, and veteran QB Chris Reynolds has been on fire with four straight games with 200 yards or more and 448 against Louisiana Tech.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall’s defense is about to get pushed harder than it has in weeks, but the offensive balance will be enough to get by.

Again, as long as the Herd don’t start turning the ball over in bunches, they should be able to survive a good day from Reynolds and turn the WKU game into a division title showdown.
