Ex-Lions CB Alex Brown sentenced to 4 months for 2021 accident

Former Detroit Lions cornerback Alex Brown has been sentenced to four months in jail after 2021 non-fatal car accident.

Former Detroit Lions cornerback Alex Brown has been sentenced to four months after being charged with drunk driving that injured teammate Charlie Taumoepeau and the other vehicle’s driver.

Brown and Taumoepeau signed with the Lions in 2021 after impressing the Lions staff during rookie tryouts. Unfortunately, that was short-lived after Brown caused an accident after driving the wrong way down the interstate in Detroit, causing a non-fatal crash.

Afterward, he entered a no contest plea and received two years of probation, $778 in court costs and fines, and had two counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment and one count of operating under the influence causing serious injury dismissed.

During the process, it was found Brown had a blood alcohol level of .211 on a portable breathalyzer and was so drunk he had no idea where he was.

It was one of the first tests of the newly formed Holmes-Campbell to see how they handled the situation. Rightfully, Brown was released, while Taumoepeau was waived with a non-football injury designation.

After the accident, Coach Campbell addressed the team, used this situation as a teachable moment about the seriousness of these situations, and spoke of the situation after it occurred.

“It was an awful incident and an awful accident. It’s something certainly we don’t condone and we brought it up. It’s one of those eye-openers. It’s not OK to jump in a car after you drink because bad things happen. That’s what Uber’s out there for. Don’t even take your car when you know you’re going out, just Uber to go out there and Uber to come home. So, it’s an awful accident and I’m praying for Charlie. It’s like he’s getting out of the woods here, but this is tough,” Campbell said in 2021.

Video: Breaking down Don Muhlbach’s release, Jahlani Tavai’s roster chances and more

Lions training camp breakdown on Don Muhlbach’s release, Jahlani Tavai’s chances, Levi Onwuzurike’s return, D’Andre Swift’s injury and more

A lot has happened in Lions land over the last few days. From a car accident that injured a player to a venerable veteran being relieved of his duties, it’s been a busy week in Allen Park.

Instead of trying to write up separate thoughts on so many of the cuts, releases and injuries, I decided to talk through them all in a video. I offered up my more expansive thoughts on Don Muhlbach’s career, Levi Onwuzurike’s return from a back injury, the roster cutdowns and more.

2021 Lions roster cuts: Shaun Dion Hamilton to I.R. among injury-related moves

Shaun Dion Hamilton had a good chance to make the team

The Lions finished their series of moves to get to the 85-man roster deadline on Tuesday.

The most notable of the moves is linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton, who was placed on the injured reserve list. Hamilton consistently performed well all summer and was considered likely to make the 53-man roster by most analysts. Because he’s been placed on injured reserve prior to the final roster cuts, Hamilton is now out for the year.

Wide receiver Chad Hansen was waived with an injury settlement, while defensive lineman Michael Barnett was waived. Barnett was just added to the team last week.

These cuts follow some injury-related moves from Detroit on Monday that lowered the roster to 87.

On Monday, the Lions placed offensive lineman Evan Boehm on injured reserve and waived tight end Charlie Taumoepeau with a non-football injury designation. Taumoepeau was injured in a car accident where cornerback Alex Brown faces charges as the driver. Brown was released on Sunday after the incident.

Report: Ex-Lions CB Alex Brown to be charged in accident that injured teammate Charlie Taumoepeau

The Lions released Brown on Sunday, hours after the alleged incident that caused Charlie Taumoepeau’s non-football injury

It seemed quite strange for the Lions to waive tight end Charlie Taumoepeau with a non-football injury designation on Monday. Taumoepeau played for the Lions in the preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills on Friday night and didn’t appear to suffer any malady.

Now there is clarity on the situation. And it’s not good news.

Per a report from Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, Taumoepeau suffered a neck injury when he was involved in a car accident early Sunday. The driver of the car in which Taumoepeau was a passenger was teammate Alex Brown, who now faces multiple charges including driving under the influence and driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

Brown was released by the Lions on Sunday afternoon.

We’ll update this story as details further unfold.

Lions make a series of injury-related roster moves

The Lions still have a couple more moves to make to get to the 85-man limit by Tuesday

With roster cuts due on Tuesday, the Detroit Lions made a series of moves that help get the team closer to the 85-person limit. Two Lions players were removed from the active roster on Monday and another previously waived accepted an injury settlement.

All three of the moves are related to injuries. The most notable is reserve offensive lineman Evan Boehm, who has been placed on injured reserve. Boehm injured his knee late in Friday’s preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills. He had been the Lions No. 2 center for much of the last week of training camp.

Tight end Charlie Taumoepeau was waived with a non-football injury designation. Taumoepeau did play in the loss to the Bills and has been a full participant in practices. The exact nature of his injury is unknown at this time.

Running back Michael Warren had already been waived last week with an injury designation. After he went unclaimed on waivers, Warren reverted to the Lions injured reserve. He has now taken an injury settlement and is off the team, free to sign with another NFL squad.

The moves leave the Lions roster at 87, meaning two more players will be gone by tomorrow.

Lions training camp notes: The heat is on for Aug. 10th

Here is some of what we saw in Detroit Lions practice on Tuesday, August 10th

After a rare afternoon practice on Monday that was forced indoors due to a thunderstorm, the Lions were back in their usual 8:30 a.m. practice slot on Tuesday. Even though the morning sun wasn’t in full rise, it was still a hot and steamy morning.

The practice execution was not so hot. While some players thrived, the overall level of play was not great. The half-filled stands of fans (the threat of rain kept the crowd down) in attendance didn’t get many highlights.

Here is some of what we saw in Allen Park on Tuesday, August 10th:

Lions roster bubble watch: Updating after two weeks of training camp

How the Lions roster bubble battles sit after two weeks of training camp

One of the bigger chores for new Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell is to whittle down the 90-mna roster to the final 53 players who will represent the team in Week 1. The first 10 sessions of training camp have shifted some of the bubble battles in the quest to make the Lions.

Not every roster spot is up for grabs, but there are a few key competitions and positions where uncertainty prevails. Here’s where those battles sit after the first two weeks of Lions training camp.

Lions sign 3 players from rookie minicamp tryouts

All participated in the team’s rookie minicamp over the weekend

The Detroit Lions held on-field tryouts over the weekend for five players as part of the team’s rookie minicamp. Three of the five tryout players earned contracts with the team on Monday.

The team announced it has signed cornerback Alex Brown, safety Alijah Holder and tight end Charlie Taumoepeau off the tryouts. All three are NFL veterans who were not retained by their teams after the 2002 season.

Brown, a 170-pound slot corner, played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. He missed the 2020 season on injured reserve. He was a 2019 undrafted free agent signing by Kansas City out of South Carolina State.

Taumoepeau is in his second NFL season out of Portland State. He had stints with three different teams in 2020, never elevating above the practice squad. The 240-pounder was last with the San Francisco 49ers.

Holder’s signing with the team was previously reported by his agent. The former Broncos safety also has the potential to play some outside CB as well as on special teams.

Colts sign two to the practice squad, release TE Xavier Grimble

Colts add to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed running back Darius Anderson and tight end Charlie Taumoepeau to the practice squad and released tight end Xavier Grimble from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

The Colts continue to make tweaks to the practice squad after initially signing 14 players on Sunday. Anderson is the only running back on the practice squad with four on the active roster while Taumoepeau joins undrafted rookie free agent Farrod Green.

Grimble spent the offseason with the Colts and saw some reps during training camp but was eventually released at roster cuts. He was re-signed to the practice squad but will now hit free agency.

The Colts now have 15 of their 16 spots filled on the practice squad, which means another move is likely coming before the Week 1 opener against the Jaguars.

Cardinals have had recent contact with small-school TE prospect

The tight end out of Portland State was invited to the combine and participated in the Senior Bowl.

The Arizona Cardinals have not been afraid to take chances in the NFL draft on players from small schools. They have had recent contact with a tight end out of Portland State.

According to Draft Wire’s Justin Melo, the Cardinals recently had a virtual meeting with Portland State tight end Charlie Taumoepeau via FaceTime.

Taumoepeau participated in the Senior Bowl and the NFL combine.

He does not have the traditional build for a true tight end at 6-2 and 240 pounds, but is built for the H-back tight end role.

He had 36 catches for 474 yards and two touchdowns last season.

He missed two games each in 2018 and 2019.

He has some athleticism, having run the 40 in 4.75 seconds. He had a 36.5-inch vertical leap, a 10-1 broad jump and 7.0-second three-cone.

He could be drafted late on Day 3 or end up a priority rookie free agent.

The Cardinals currently have three tight ends on their roster — Maxx Williams, Dan Arnold and Darrell Daniels.
