49ers land pass rusher Charles Omenihu in trade with Texans

The 49ers got some help in the pass rush department trading for former Texan Charles Omenihu.

The San Francisco 49ers got some help in the pass rush department ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline.

The 49ers have landed young pass rusher Charles Omenihu, who is being traded from the Houston Texans in exchange for a future late-round pick, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Omenihu, a former fifth rounder, has drawn plenty of interest with a lack of pass rushers available, according to Rapoport. It’s a move the should bolster San Francisco’s defensive front.

In 2.5 seasons with the Texans, Omenihu has totaled 7.0 career sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 4 pass breakups.

The 49ers are currently 26th in adjusted sack rate and 22nd in pass defense efficiency, per Football Outsiders. San Francisco has 16 sacks through seven games, which is tied for 20th in the league.

The hope is Omenihu, who doesn’t have any sacks so far in 2021, can help bolster this 49ers pass rush.

Report: Chiefs talked with Texans about DE Charles Omenihu trade

The Houston Texans reportedly were in talks with the Kansas City Chiefs to trade defensive end Charles Omenihu.

The Houston Texans almost parted ways with one of their young defensive lineman ahead of the Nov. 2 trade deadline.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, just before the Kansas City Chiefs made the deal to acquire outside linebacker Melvin Ingram from the Pittsburgh Steelers, the AFC West club called the Texans to talk about possibly acquiring defensive end Charles Omenihu.

Omenihu has played in six games this season, starting in two. The Texans had Omenihu deactivated in Weeks 4-5 as they gave the reps to defensive end Jordan Jenkins. On the season Omenihu has provided 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, and three quarterback hits.

Defensive coordinator Lovie Smith told reporters on Oct. 28 that it was simply a “numbers game” as to why the former 2019 fifth-round pick from Texas would be inactive for two straight games this season.

“Chuck (Omenihu) has been doing a good job,” said Smith. “It’s just the numbers hadn’t allowed him to play. It worked out that way for him this week, but our entire defensive line played pretty good last week.”

Part of the reason could be that the team is shopping the 6-5, 280-pound defensive lineman, who provides flexibility both inside and outside. The numbers general manager Nick Caserio is concerned about are draft picks as Houston continues the long climb back to the top of the AFC South.

Texans vs. Colts inactives: DE Charles Omenihu out again

The Houston Texans declared their inactives for Week 6 at the Indianapolis Colts and DE Charles Omenihu was a healthy scratch once again.

The Houston Texans announced their inactives as they prepare to face the Indianapolis Colts for Week 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Center Justin Britt (knee) was declared out on Saturday. Receiver Danny Amendola (thigh) was declared out on Friday.

Joining them among the inactives were defensive end Charles Omenihu, quarterback Deshaun Watson, cornerback Jimmy Moreland, running back Scottie Phillips, receiver Davion Davis, and tight end Brevin Jordan.

For the Colts, quarterback Jacob Eason, safety Andrew Sendejo, tackle Braden Smith, receiver Mike Strachan, defensive end Kemoko Turay, defensive lineman Chris Williams, and running back Jordan Wilkins were declared inactive for Week 6.

Texans sat DE Charles Omenihu in Week 5 to get better glimpse of Jordan Jenkins

The Houston Texans made DE Charles Omenihu inactive against the New England Patriots to get a better look at DE Jordan Jenkins.

The Houston Texans made a puzzling move ahead of their Week 5 matchup with the New England Patriots.

The Texans made third-year defensive end Charles Omenihu inactive. The former 2019 fifth-round pick had compiled nine combined tackles and three quarterback hits through four games, two of which he had started.

According to defensive coordinator Lovie Smith, the Texans sat Omenihu in Week 5 so as to get a better glimpse of sixth-year defensive end Jordan Jenkins, who the club signed to a two-year, $6 million contract in free agency.

“We look for options,” said Smith. “Jordan Jenkins is the one defensive lineman that we hadn’t had an opportunity to see, and you can only dress so many defensive linemen. We start each process over each Monday after the game.”

Jenkins provided Houston with five combined tackles, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit in the 25-22 loss to the Patriots at NRG Stadium.

The Texans are working through their process to see which defensive linemen may go in Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts.

“See how a player practices that week, see what the best combination that brings us that we can go with, and that’s what we’ve done this week,” Smith said. “Can’t wait to see the guys out at practice today.”

Texans vs. Patriots inactives: WR Danny Amendola will not play

The Houston Texans announced their inactives for Week 5 against the New England Patriots, and WR Danny Amendola was declared out.

The Houston Texans announced their inactives ahead of their Week 5 showdown with the New England Patriots Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium.

In a surprise move, receiver Danny Amendola, who the Texans cut receiver Anthony Miller in favor of, was not active as he continues to deal with a thigh injury, which kept him as a limited participant in all three of Houston’s practices for Week 5.

The Texans also made defensive end Charles Omenihu, cornerback Jimmy Moreland (illness), running back Scottie Phillips (illness), running back Rex Burkhead (hip), tight end Brevin Jordan (illness), and quarterback Deshaun Watson inactive.

For the Patriots, tackle Trent Brown (calf), guard Shaq Mason (abdomen), cornerback Shaun Wade (concussion), cornerback Jalen Mills (hamstring), tight end Devin Asiasi, running back J.J. Taylor, and defensive end Ronnie Perkins inactive.

Texans DC Lovie Smith hopes to see DE Charles Omenihu take next step against the Browns

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu had a good game in Week 1. DC Lovie Smith hopes to see improvement against the Cleveland Browns.

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Lovie Smith likes what Charles Omenihu brings to the defensive line.

The former 2019 fifth-round pick from Texas produced two combined tackles and a quarterback hit against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Houston’s 37-21 victory in Week 1 at NRG Stadium.

Smith hopes that Omenihu is able to build upon the momentum he created against Jacksonville and take it into Week 2 against the Cleveland Browns.

“There’s a reason why he’s one of our guys,” Smith said. “He’s excellent against the run. As a six-technique, he’s going to be stronger, stouter versus most of the tight ends he’s going to play against, and he can rush the passer too.”

Throughout his 30 games with the Texans, six of which he started, Omenihu has accumulated 32 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss, 22 quarterback hits, 7.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and four pass breakups.

“We like his flexibility,” said Smith. “Decent start and anxious to see the guys take another step this week.”

The Texans take on Cleveland Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from FirstEnergy Stadium.

Texans DE Charles Omenihu says view of Deshaun Watson ‘will never waver’

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu still considers quarterback Deshaun Watson a friend despite how tumultuous 2021 has been.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson had nothing to do with the team’s 37-21 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1 at NRG Stadium.

It was the first time since Nov. 19, 2017, against the Arizona Cardinals that the Texans won a game without Watson under center. Nevertheless, he is still a storyline.

Charles Omenihu, who produced two tackles in the win over the Jaguars, went on Houston radio to say he still has an affinity for Watson, even though he was inactive as the team’s third quarterback on Sept. 12.

“I mean, regardless of his situation, Deshaun is my boy,” Omenihu said on “The Wheelhouse with Jake Asman, Cody Stoots, and Brad Kellner” on ESPN 97.5 [KFNC-FM] Tuesday. “I was riding with Deshaun before I got into the league just for the fact that we got the same agent. So, I’ve been around him. To me, it’s outside of my pay grade, but him as a person, and as a friend, will always stay the same. It will never waver.”

Watson, who requested a trade from the Texans in late January, is also involving in pending litigation wherein 22 women have alleged he committed sexual assault. Tyrod Taylor started for Houston against the Jaguars and produced 291 yards passing and two touchdowns while completing 21 of his 33 passes.

Houston faces the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time from FirstEnergy Stadium. A win would make it the first time since 2016 the Texans started 2-0, something the club never got around to accomplishing during the Watson era.

Texans DE Charles Omenihu was a ‘secret superstar’ in the second week of preseason

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu has earned recognition for his two sacks and a fumble recovery against the Dallas Cowboys in preseason.

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu has been flying under the radar at a national level since he came into the league as a fifth-round pick from Texas in 2019. However, the spotlight may be starting to turn his way in 2021.

According to Doug Farrar of the Touchdown Wire, Omenihu earned a spot on their “secret superstars” list for the second week of preseason.

A fifth-round pick in 2019 out of Texas, Omenihu has enjoyed two nice NFL seasons as a rotational inside/outside pass disruptor. He’s flown under the radar in the Texans’ franchise disarray, but at the very least, he should get more recognition on a Houston roster that’s full of twos and threes, with very few ones.

Omenihu was certainly on point last week against the Cowboys, with two sacks and three stops. The same guy who had 32 total pressures on 340 pass-rushing snaps in 2020 could be even better in 2021.

Defensive tackle Maliek Collins knows how well Omenihu can play, and outlined it for reporters on Monday after practice at NRG Stadium.

“He’s strong, he can bend,” Collins said. “Yeah, man, he’s a great player. You’ve seen it on Saturday whenever we played, a glimpse of what he can be. He’s going to continue to work and develop to be that.”

The Texans take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Central Time in NRG Stadium. Omenihu could be a secret superstar by the end of that week with another big performance.

Secret Superstars of the preseason: Week 2

With the second week of the full 2021 preseason in the books, here are the players who did the most under the radar to state their cases.

As the preseason rounds to a close and NFL teams are looking down the barrel of final cuts, it’s more important than ever for those players on the bubble — or in the near vicinity of the bubble — to show all they can do. Not only to stick with their current teams, but also to make their attributes obvious to other teams if they are cut for whatever reason.

Not every player on this week’s Secret Superstars list is a bubble guy, but each player used Week 2 of the full preseason as their times to shine — at just the right time.
