4 Saints the Chargers must game plan for in Week 5

The New Orleans Saints have a few players on the offensive side of the ball that the Los Angeles Chargers must be prepared for.

The Chargers are set to take on the Saints on Monday night.

There are a few notable players that Los Angeles will have to make sure they’re game planned for in order to snap their losing streak.

Here are four players on the Saints that the Bolts should hone in on:

RB Alvin Kamara

The Saints offense wouldn’t be what it is without Kamara the first four weeks of the season considering the star wide receiver Michael Thomas has been sidelined and quarterback Drew Brees has been up and down.

Kamara, the dynamic back, has done it all. He has seven touchdowns from the line of scrimmage, marking the most through the first four weeks of a season in franchise history.

Not only will the Chargers’ run defense have to be on their A-game, their pass defense must hone in on him, as Kamara leads the team with 30 receptions for 321 yards and three scores this season.

Twitter reacts to Justin Herbert being named Chargers’ starting quarterback

The Chargers fanbase was ecstatic once it was announced.

Coach Anthony Lynn had a decision to make. He was forced to decide who would be the Chargers’ starting quarterback the rest of the way out, and he chose to give the keys to rookie Justin Herbert.

Herbert was thrown into the fire during the second week of the season after Tyrod Taylor was forced miss some time with a punctured lung. In Taylor’s absence, the first-round pick impressed in each of his three starts.

Herbert made Lynn’s original statement, which was that Taylor would go back to being the starter once healthy, something difficult to stand by. Ultimately, he saw enough from Herbert to make him the permanent starter.

For the most part, the team’s fanbase felt that Lynn made the right choice.

Here’s a look at how they reacted once he announced that Herbert would be the one calling the shots moving forward.

What Saints HC Sean Payton said about Chargers QB Justin Herbert

Saints coach Sean Payton was a fan of Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert during the pre-draft process.

Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert’s play the past few weeks has sent a message across the league that he isn’t be taken as a first-year player.

Herbert is coming off an outstanding performance against a stout Buccaneers defense where he passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns. Through three games, he has 931 passing yards and five touchdowns.

It remains to be seen if Herbert will be starting in Week 5 because coach Anthony Lynn has yet to name the starter with Tyrod Taylor nearing a full recovery from a punctured lung.

The Saints’ preparation consists of getting ready for either Herbert or Taylor. Coach Sean Payton voiced how different Los Angeles’ offense operates under the rookie than with veteran.

“I think it’s not the file so much as the team, the scheme and how he’s fitting immediately into it. I think you have to look at what the strengths (are), what he did well in college, was he a guy that turned it over, was he a guy that protected the ball,” Payton said.

“But I think you’re going to study more closely the system. Obviously, it’ll be a little bit uniquely different than when Tyrod’s (Taylor) in there and you cover all those things. But you really have to defend what you’re seeing on tape.”

New Orleans was among the teams that did their homework on Herbert during the pre-draft process. Payton was impressed with him while he played for the Oregon Ducks along with their interview at the Combine.

“I remember him very well. I remember the interview process. I remember the combine the evaluation, the tape all of it. He was an impressive prospect, extremely smart with the live arm,” Payton said.

“I know for from our standpoint, but we felt like we had a great exposure based on all the postseason opportunities we had to look at (him). So I do remember him and it’s good to see that he’s doing well.”
