The Chargers lead the Rams at the half, 17-10.

Here are all of Los Angeles’ notable highlights from the first two quarters.

The Chargers’ defense got off to a hot start.

Despite giving up a few chunk plays on the ground, Los Angeles managed to get the Rams into a third-down situation. Baker Mayfield dropped back, but nobody picked up blitzing corner Bryce Callahan, leaving Mayfield without anywhere to go. Callahan directed him into Morgan Fox, who finished the sack and forced a Rams punt on their opening drive.

Austin Ekeler extended his lead in total touchdowns early in the second quarter. His 17th of the season came on a ten-yard

run on which the running back powered through two Rams defenders on the goal line to give the Chargers a 7-3 lead.

It’s a game of milestones for Ekeler, who not only leads the NFL in touchdowns but became just the third running back with 100 catches in a season and at least 15 touchdowns from scrimmage with a catch in the first quarter. The other two members of that club are Chargers legend LaDainian Tomlinson (2003) and Christian McCaffrey (2019).

Ekeler followed up his 17th touchdown of the season with an 18th for good measure, this time outrunning the Rams’ defense for 72 yards to extend the Chargers’ lead to 14-3.

It brought the Chargers to 121 rushing yards before halftime, one of their best performances of the season.

Ekeler broke a few arm tackles in the hole and at the second level before outlasting the Rams’ defense on his way to the end zone.

Chargers vs. Colts first-half highlights

Catch up on all the action from the Monday matchup between the Chargers and Colts.

The Chargers lead the Colts at the half, 10-3.

Here are all of Los Angeles’ notable highlights from the first two quarters.

After the two teams traded three and outs to start the game, Indianapolis started to drive down the field, including a fourth-down conversion aided by a Jeff Saturday challenge.

Then, it was Michael Davis’ time to shine.

David fielded a Nick Foles deep throw like the arm punt it was, eventually returning the easy interception 30 yards to give the Chargers the ball back at their own 41.

Most of the time, football teams trade points. Through the first quarter, all the Chargers and Colts traded were interceptions.

After Justin Herbert was intercepted on the drive following Davis’ first pick of the season, the Colts threw it right back to LA. This time, it was Derwin James with the play, tapping his feet in bounds like a veteran receiver.

The interception, Los Angeles’ second of the game, gave the Bolts the ball back at their own 33.

After more than 21 minutes of game time, the Chargers finally broke the 0-0 deadlock.

Los Angeles capped off a 13-play, 70-yard drive with a one-yard Austin Ekeler rushing touchdown, the Chargers’ fourth straight run play of the drive.

The drive was also aided by two Mike Williams receptions of 16 and 18 yards, the latter of which brought the ball into the red zone.

James’ return from injury has turned out to be short-lived.

After returning from a quad injury that had held him out of the last two contests, James had had a stellar game through a quarter and a half, including a phenomenal interception of Colts QB Nick Foles.

Midway through the second quarter, Foles targeted wide receiver Ashton Dulin in the flat, where he was hit with the force of a semi-truck as James flew downhill. The collision was immediately flagged for helmet-to-helmet contact.

Despite James’ protests as he pointed to his shoulder while walking off the field, he was ejected from the remainder of the contest by officials in New York. It seemed as though James was indicating that he hit Dulin in the shoulder initially, but the replay showed clear head-to-head contact.

With James back out of the lineup, Alohi Gilman and Nasir Adderley will take over as the safeties for the rest of the game. Rookie Raheem Layne is also on the roster after being signed off the practice squad before the game.

Chargers LB Drue Tranquill making case for new contract

Chargers LB Drue Tranquill is having an outstanding season.

Overshadowed by newcomers and stars on the defensive side of the ball heading into the regular season was linebacker Drue Tranquill.

However, the man in the middle of the defense has flashed week in and out, most recently shining in the Chargers’ victory over the Broncos on Monday night.

Tranquill continued to be a heady run-defender, but most of his money was made getting after quarterback Russell Wilson. On 11 pass-rush snaps, Tranquill amassed a team-high three pressures and two sacks.

“Consistency in performance, and I think production in that consistency,” Staley said on Tranquill. “Because you can be consistent in your job, but are you producing? I think he’s doing both those things.

He’s communicating at a high level, playing with a lot of energy, being a factor in the run game, pass game, pass rush. Having a really nice season.”

The new pieces in the interior part of the defensive line have made life easier for players like Tranquill in the run game by eating gaps to enable them to make plays at or near the line of scrimmage.

Tranquill has demonstrated great eyes and trigger against the run and pass and good speed and range to make plays sideline-to-sideline and downhill, as evident yesterday.

Tranquill has played every defensive snap and has made the most of them. With his high level of play in the final year of his rookie contract, Tranquill might garner a nice extension if he keeps it up.

Last season, the first year in Staley’s system, Tranquill finished with 79 tackles, five tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, and a pass defended in 14 games.
