Michigan football freshmen who are standing out to Sherrone Moore in fall camp

These are definitely names to know NOW! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — While fans usually expect more each year from the known commodities, a few players always come from out of seemingly nowhere. Sherrone Moore talked about a few Michigan football players who have improved the most throughout fall camp, but what about the players who have yet to play a down of college football?

The Wolverines routinely have had freshmen step up in Year 1.

Going back to Jim Harbaugh’s second year (2016), those players were running back Chris Evans, left guard Ben Bredeson and linebacker Devin Bush. In 2017, it was two wide receivers, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black (before his Week 3 injury). In 2019, it was running back Zach Charbonnet. In the much-maligned 2020 season, running back Blake Corum was the first tailback to receive a carry. Defensive tackle Mason Graham made some big plays in his first year as did cornerback Will Johnson (2022). Wide receiver Semaj Morgan was that guy this past season.

So who is standing out thus far in 2024? Sherrone Moore has a few candidates.

“Yeah, there’s a couple of them. Start at the quarterback position: Jadyn Davis, he just has the ‘it’ factor, makes plays, competitive,” Moore said. “Obviously, was a three-time state champion player of the year, but poised, has ability. We’ll see how it progresses.

“His teammate, Channing Goodwin — he’s a playmaker. He’s a dude that’s going to probably help us this year in some way, shape or form. And always said that it’s easier to play the farther you are from the ball, especially early. If you’re a lineman, D-lineman, it’s harder to play early. So those guys, those guys up front, those linemen, especially O-linemen, it’s harder for them to play early. And they’re all going to be really good players, but those two, from a skill set standpoint, I think offensively will be the guys, and then the tight ends have been awesome.

“Jordan Marshall is probably the next guy. He’s got a chance to be special, dynamic.”

Moore was quickly interrupted so that we could learn more about Marshall. Could he be that third tailback, usurping the snaps of some of the others who have been in the program? Given what he’s seen from the veterans, it will be a difficult proposition.

“Yeah, we’ll see,” Moore said. “Ben Hall is — you know, having guys like Jordan Marshall in the room will make you play fast and physical. And Ben Hall has played, all of 230 pounds he is, so he’s run physical, fast, so super excited how he’s hit and how he’s gaining momentum.”

There are also two defensive players who could see the field early and often in 2024; both early enrollees. Michigan needs depth at edge rusher and has relied on freshmen before: Rashan Gary in 2016 and Derrick Moore in 2022 to name two. And though there’s some depth at linebacker, there’s one name that’s stood out, Moore says.

“Dominic Nichols is probably the guy that jumps out the most as a freshman. That’s really because he’s been here in the spring and he came here and he’s been in the fall. So he’s a guy that I think as a freshman has got a chance. And then probably one more guy is Cole Sullivan.”

Michigan football adds legacy commitment, 2024 4-star WR

Father of newest Michigan football commit has perfect celebratory post

This is too perfect! #GoBlue

There’s a certain pride that comes from wearing the winged helmet. It stays with you for the rest of your earthly life; the fraternity of former players runs deep. That’s also why there’s an added emphasis when it comes to legacy players: They’re taking that brotherhood into another generation.

Michigan football gained a legacy commitment on Sunday: 2024 Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day four-star wide receiver Channing Goodwin chose to be a Wolverine. Goodwin’s father, Jonathan Goodwin, played for the maize and blue in the late-1990s before going onto a successful NFL career.

With the news that his son would be playing for his alma mater, Goodwin had the perfect reaction on social media:

Yes, that’s him and head coach Jim Harbaugh, who coached the elder Goodwin in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. Certainly, both were feeling a certain level of ebullience on Sunday with Channing’s commitment.

Twitter reacts to Michigan football landing WR Channing Goodwin

LET’S GO!!! #GoBlue

Michigan football has the top-ranked class in the 2024 recruiting rankings, but entering Sunday the Wolverines lacked a playmaking wide receiver in the class.

That changed on Sunday afternoon.

The maize and blue landed a top target after a legacy prospect committed to them. Channing Goodwin, the son of former offensive lineman Jonathan Goodwin, committed to Michigan over North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

According to 247Sports composite, Goodwin is a three-star receiver and the 511th-ranked prospect. However, 247Sports itself lists Goodwin as a four-star and the 241st-ranked recruit in the country.

Goodwin hails from the same high school as five-star and current Michigan commit, Jadyn Davis, at Charlotte (North Carolina) Providence Day School.

With the addition to Goodwin, Michigan has 16 recruits committed to it in the 2024 class.

Twitter erupted after Goodwin announced his decision. Here are the best reactions.

Michigan football adds legacy commitment, 2024 4-star WR

GOT HIM! #GoBlue

It’s another sign the Jadyn Davis commitment is paying off.

After the 2024 Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day five-star quarterback committed, the question was: Who will join him?

Michigan football has been targeting two of his teammates, both wide receivers — four-stars Jordan Shipp and Channing Goodwin. The latter is a Michigan legacy: His father, Jonathan Goodwin, played offensive line for the Wolverines.

Rated No. 241 overall according to 247Sports’ proprietary rankings, Goodwin appeared to be choosing between the Wolverines and North Carolina Tar Heels. However, Michigan being the legacy school along and having the pledge of his high school quarterback was too much for North Carolina to overcome.

Goodwin committed to Michigan football on Sunday. He made the pledge on the 247Sports YouTube channel.

Goodwin also had offers from Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, NC State, Pitt, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

He’s the first wide receiver pledge of the 2024 class for the Wolverines and the 16th overall. Michigan football still has the No. 1 class in the nation according to the 247Sports team rankings.

Is Michigan football trending toward adding to 2024 class on Sunday?

Good news looks to be coming soon! #GoBlue

Michigan football quarterback commit Jadyn Davis may be getting some help soon, and if he does, it will be from a very familiar face.

2024 Charlotte (North Carolina) Providence Day four-star wide receiver Channing Goodwin is set to make his commitment on Sunday, and the Michigan legacy is teammates with the Wolverines’ five-star quarterback commit. Rated No. 241 overall according to 247Sports’ proprietary rankings, Goodwin appears to be choosing between the Wolverines and North Carolina Tar Heels. But analysts anticipate he’ll end up wearing maize and blue.

Though he already had four 247Sports crystal ball predictions indicating he will become a Wolverine, Goodwin gained two more this past week. National recruiting analyst Brian Dohn and NC State insider Michael Clark logged predictions for the maize and blue.

If Goodwin pledges, he will be the first wide receiver commitment of the cycle. Of course, the Wolverines are looking at several other big targets to add to the class, with the possibility it would add one or two more wideouts.

He is the son of former Michigan offensive lineman Jonathan Goodwin.

Top Michigan WR prospect will announce commitment this weekend

Sounds like a sure thing! #GoBlue

Michigan football may have the top-ranked 2024 recruiting class in the country, but the Wolverines do not have any wide receivers committed thus far. The maize and blue have a five-star quarterback, Jadyn Davis, committed which should lead to more receivers wanting to play alongside him.

It’s very possible Michigan may land its first one on Sunday.

2024 wide receiver Channing Goodwin announced on Wednesday he planned to commit to a school on May 7 at 4 p.m. ET. The announcement will take place on 247Sports YouTube page.

Less than a week ago, Goodwin announced his top seven, which consisted of Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

According to 247Sports, Goodwin is a four-star recruit, but on the 247Sports composite he is a three-star WR and the 508th-ranked recruit in the 2024 class.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound wide receiver hails from Charlotte (North Carolina) Providence Day School. If that sounds familiar, that’s because he goes to the same school with Jadyn Davis.  There are currently five Crystal Ball predictions in for Michigan to get his commitment on Sunday. With the familiarity between Davis and Goodwin, it makes sense.

Goodwin is a legacy target for the maize and blue since his dad, Jonathan Goodwin, played for Michigan as an offensive lineman from 1998-2001.

4-star Carolinas wideout has ‘great’ experience at Clemson camp

Among the standout wide receivers who had the chance to showcase their talent on the first day of Dabo Swinney Camp on June 1 was Channing Goodwin — a 6-foot-1, 180-pound rising junior Charlotte’s (N.C.) Providence Day School.

“It was great honestly,” Goodwin told The Clemson Insider regarding his Swinney Camp experience. “I got to go down there with my (quarterback) Jadyn (Davis) also. They offered him that day as well, so I know that was huge for him. I feel like me and him both performed well at camp, being able to throw to each other on 1-on-1s and all that, so it was great.”

What type of feedback did he get from Tyler Grisham?

“It was great with him,” Goodwin said of Clemson’s wide receivers coach. “Jadyn, of course, his situation is a little bit different than mine, but he just told me to be patient. He definitely still showed interest, but I know they don’t offer too many guys early. His overall message was to just be patient and stay in touch with him.”

When Clemson formally turned the page to offering prospects in the 2024 class on June 1 and started doling out offers to rising junior recruits, Grisham didn’t hand out a wide receiver offer until 10 days later.

Since then, both Grimsley (Greensboro, N.C.) four-star Alex Taylor and Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) four-star Jonathan Paylor are the only receivers in their respective class to report offers from Clemson.

With that being said, what would an offer from Clemson mean for Goodwin and his recruitment?

“It would be great,” Goodwin said regarding a potential offer from the Tigers. “I’ve been going to Clemson camp since eighth grade. I’m actually from Columbia, South Carolina, where the Gamecocks are at, but I’ve always known that Clemson is a great school. I grew up with that rivalry and the whole time, Clemson’s been on top. That would definitely mean a lot.”

Goodwin saw his teammate and five-star quarterback receive an offer from the Tigers prior to the June 1 morning session at Swinney Camp. While Davis didn’t formally announce the offer until later in the afternoon, he was able to gain further rapport with one of his top targets at one of the top college camps in the country.

“It was great, we had already talked about it a little bit,” he said. “I mean, me and him, we work together all the time. It was just another day at the office. We’ve already had our time together and all that, it was just a matter of performing out there.”

Goodwin’s performance obviously caught the attention of Grisham.

“I met a lot of receivers coaches, but he definitely stands out,” Goodwin said. “You can tell he’s a great coach. I feel like he has a really good ability to teach. Every year I go to camp, I feel like I leave better as a football player. I honestly believe that. He always gives me something to improve myself every time.”

After he visited Clemson, Goodwin made his way to the University of Michigan, along with Davis and his fellow receiver counterpart at Providence Day, 2024 four-star Jordan Shipp. Goodwin’s father, Jonathan, played his college football in Ann Arbor and later enjoyed a 13-year NFL career, spending time with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers.

As of now, Channing doesn’t have any plans to make any other visits this summer. Clemson was the only camp that Channing went to because he’s gone every year and wanted to continue that tradition. He also worked out with Ron Bellamy, the wide receivers coach at Michigan

Right now, Channing, who 247Sports considers to be the nation’s No. 16 wide receiver and the No. 102 overall prospect in the class of 2024, is focused on getting ready for his junior season at Providence Day.

Highly rated WR goes in-depth on return visit to Clemson

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a talented North Carolina-based receiver, who made his return trip to Clemson last month.

Providence Day (Charlotte, N.C.) four-star Channing Goodwin— a 6-foot-1, 180 — pound sophomore in the class of 2024 – was back on Clemson’s campus with his high school teammates for an unofficial visit Saturday, March 12.

Goodwin said that the culture in the building immediately stood out to him. In his eyes, Clemson is definitely just a good place to be in general.

“It was great, honestly,” he said regarding the visit. “Clemson, it’s always fun to be down there, especially to be with my teammates. That was fun to be with those guys as well. Being able to get there on a day that they don’t have a game is definitely more intimate with the coaches, and get some more one-on-one time with those guys. It was definitely fun to see what goes on to prepare for the season and stuff like that with the coaches.”

Speaking of the coaches, what did Goodwin hear from Clemson’s coaching staff while he was back on campus?

“Kind of how they just recruit their guys,” Goodwin said. “They don’t offer too many guys early, though. Just building a relationship with them. I’ve known Coach (Tyler) Grisham since eighth grade now. They’re not allowed to text us yet, so anytime we get a chance to talk to them, that’s very valuable.”

Goodwin imagines that once Sept. 1 hits, he’ll start hearing from Clemson and its wide receivers coach some more. He certainly believes that Clemson is a school where he can build a relationship in the future. In the meantime, he was happy to have a chance to watch Grisham in his element.

“I think he’s a great coach,” he said of Grisham. “He’s been able to coach me up at some camps, especially seeing Clemson practice for the first time, I think he’s a great coach overall. Not only a great coach, but a great person as well.”

Of course, Goodwin’s not the only Providence Day player on Clemson’s radar. He was there with five-star quarterback Jadyn Davis and two of his other teammates: 2024 four-star wide receiver Jordan Shipp and 2025 offensive tackle David Sanders, Jr.

“It was great, honestly,” Goodwin said of getting to take in the visit with his teammates. “I went with Jadyn on a gameday visit, so he was there again, (Jordan) Shipp and big David (Sanders), I know he loves Clemson. Being with those guys on the visit was very fun.”

Goodwin estimates that he’ll probably go back down to Clemson this summer and participate in the Dabo Swinney Camp, as well as possibly taking another game day visit, once the 2022 regular season rolls around.

“That’s definitely a place I want to get up to again,” he said.

Where do things currently stand in Goodwin’s recruitment?

“It’s been pretty good,” he said of his ongoing recruitment. “I’ve been to a couple of other schools. I’ve been to Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, N.C. State, places like those, and a couple of more in the future. It’s definitely starting to pick up soon, especially when Sept. 1 hits, I can only imagine it picks up from here.”

Goodwin currently ranks as the No. 19 wide receiver and the nation’s No. 98 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

4-star WR hopes to end up like former WRU members

Clemson is showing interest in a standout wide receiver recruit from the Tar Heel State whose recruitment has started over the past few months.

Providence Day School (Charlotte, N.C.) 2024 four-star wide receiver Channing Goodwin was in attendance for Clemson’s 48-27 win over Wake Forest back on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Goodwin was invited along with his close friend and the nation’s No. 1 prospect, Catawba Ridge (Fort Mill, S.C.) 2024 four-star quarterback Jadyn Davis.

“It was fun,” Goodwin told The Clemson Insider regarding his first game day experience in Death Valley. “It was a good game that they won. You could just feel the family atmosphere. Going in the locker room and all that was cool.”

Godwin was a fan of how Clemson utilized its receivers, albeit banged up, throughout the 21-point victory.

He also remains flattered that a school that has the history at the wide receiver position that Clemson does is showing interest in him.

“I think it’s great to see all the past dudes that have gone to Clemson and see what they’ve done after Clemson is just a huge compliment and hopefully I can end up like one of those guys,” he said.

In addition to Clemson, he’s been on game day visits to Virginia Tech, South Carolina, UNC and N.C. State.

While Goodwin is a top-100 national prospect in his class, the offers haven’t come flying in just yet. He holds offers from Bowling Green, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina and East Carolina.

Though, after helping Providence Day win a State Championship, his recruitment has begun to get the attention it deserves. It’s just the start of things for him.

“It’s been a blessing,” Goodwin said. “It’s been fun. I’m just glad to be where I am right now and I hope to keep growing.”

Goodwin is just starting his relationship with Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham. He participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp this past summer and

“It was really fun, actually. I enjoyed it a lot,” he said. “I got to work with Coach Grisham a little bit there. Everything there was just great. It was really nice. They coach you up more there and you definitely become a better football player there.”

Goodwin was impressed with Grisham’s coaching style and he’s hopeful that next year when he’s a junior, that they’ll be able to converse a bit more and further build that relationship.

“I like him a lot,” he added.

Goodwin tries to model his game after Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davnate Adams. And with that, he’d categorize himself as someone who is pretty intentional and precise when it comes to route running.

He currently ranks as the No. 20 wide receiver and No. 98 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.
