WATCH: Highlights from Michigan State Basketballā€™s win over Duke

The Spartans knocked off Duke on Tuesday to win their Champion’s Classic matchup. Here are your highlights.

[jwplayer W5c9uJnW-PROpJzTY]

Michigan State Basketball is now 3-0, and Tom Izzo got his third ever win against Mike Krzyzewski as the Spartans knocked off Duke 75-69 on the road against Duke.

As Tom Izzo noted after the game, this wasn’t the prettiest win for the Spartans, but it was a fun, hard-fought game. Michigan State started off the game behind and it looked like they were going to fall behind big, but then they fought their way back with tough defense and some surprising performances from guys like Julius Marble.

You can watch the full highlights from the game below:

Michigan State Basketball beats Duke on the road in the Champion’s Classic

Michigan State beat Duke on the road 75-69 to give Tom Izzo his third ever win against Coach K.

[jwplayer q47PkZ9W-PROpJzTY]

For the first time ever, Michigan State Basketball has beaten Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium. On Tuesday night, Tom Izzo got his third win ever against Mike Krzyzewski as the Spartans beat Duke 75-69.

This was a game that started off slow for Michigan State, but then Tom Izzo made a chess move against his old rival and friend Coach K, subbing in Julius Marble who scored a crucial 12 points in just 11 minutes for the Spartans. That was really when the game turned around and MSU started playing suffocating defense against the Blue Devils

From there, Aaron Henry really kept the Spartans in the game in that first half with his aggressive play and some of the best defense you can watch in college basketball. He didn’t shoot well (7/21 from the field), but he had 3 blocks, 3 steals, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists to go with his 14 points.

Rocket Watts really took over this game on the offensive side. Watts would drop 20 points in the game and really showed off his athleticism and speed.

Joey Hauser added another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also drilled two threes and nabbed a steal as he really starts to get comfortable with MSU.

Finally, Malik Hall deserves some credit for his solid play on both ends of the court. He finished with a double-double as well with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Spartans will face Detroit University next on Friday at 5 p.m. EST.

MSU Basketball vs. Duke: Where to watch, Game Preview & Prediction

Check out the game details, keys to the match-up, and my game prediction in this Michigan State-Duke preview.

The Champions Classic returns yet again this year but will look a little bit different because of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of those changes is the Spartans playing a true road game in this year’s event, heading to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on No. 6 Duke. Fans will not be in attendance, however.

This will mark the 15th time Tom Izzo and Mike Krzyzewski have gone up against each other, with Coach K holding a significant advantage in the head-to-head battle. Izzo is 2-12 all-time against Duke, but to be fair to Tom the Blue Devils have been ranked in the top 10 for all 14 of those match-ups and will be again on Tuesday.

The Blue Devils got the best of MSU last season at the Breslin Center as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge so could revenge be on the Spartans’ minds this year? Who will be the Spartans’ go-to threat in this tight battle? There’s a lot of questions surrounding MSU as we enter this big-time match-up.

Letā€™s take a look at this match-up against the Blue Devils, with game details, things to watch, and last but not least my prediction for this game.

REPORT: MSU Basketball to play at Duke in Champions Classic

Michigan State will head to Cameron Indoor Stadium to battle the Duke Blue Devils as part of this year’s Champions Classic.

[jwplayer AyZHPp3A]

For the first time ever, the Champions Classic will take place in two different venues, with one of the games being played on a team’s home floor. And Spartan fans aren’t going to be happy about it.

Michigan State will head to Cameron Indoor Stadium to battle the Duke Blue Devils as part of this year’s Champions Classic, Matt Norlander of CBS Sports reported on Friday. The game will take place on Dec. 1, and as I said before, will be the first true road game to take place in this annual event.

Kansas and Kentucky will square off at a neutral site (Indianapolis) as the second game of this year’s Champions Classic. Tip-off times haven’t been determined yet, according to Norlander.

Norlander followed up his first tweet by stating there will be no fans in attendance at Cameron, and that the decision to not host both games in Indy was because of the different COVID protocols in place between the Big Ten/ACC and Big 12/SEC.

Last week, we found out about a handful of MSU basketball match-ups, including a potential season-opening tilt against Notre Dame and the ACC-Big Ten Challenge against Virginia. We are still waiting on the rest of the Spartans’ schedule, but here’s what we know as of right now:

  • Nov. 28 – Notre Dame (home non-conference game)
  • Dec. 1 – at Duke (part of Champions Classic)
  • Dec. 9 – at Virginia (part of ACC-Big Ten Challenge)

Hopefully, we will have the rest of the Spartans’ schedule soon but for now, it appears MSU will have at least three tough non-conference match-ups.

BREAKING: NCAA, ESPN scrapping plans for Orlando basketball bubble

According to Seth Davis of The Athletic, plans for a college basketball bubble have fallen apart.

[jwplayer Csm3J5fS-PROpJzTY]

For the past month, the expectation for Michigan State Basketball and other college basketball programs around the country was that they would be starting their season in Orlando, Florida, in a bubble environment similar to what the NBA pulled off with great success.

The Spartans were originally slated to play the Champions Classic, and at least two more games in Orlando. On Monday, however, those plans were reportedly scrapped. This was first reported by Seth Davis of The Athletic and then confirmed by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

According to Davis, this was a decision made by ESPN, who was going to be hosting the college basketball bubble. The current goal, again according to Davis, is that the Champions Classic will still be held, possibly in a location like Indianapolis.

What we know about MSU Basketballā€™s 2020-21 Schedule

Thereā€™s been a flurry of reports over the past few weeks giving us the opportunity to piece together the Spartansā€™ 2020-21 schedule.

[jwplayer 5UjOXQgj]

In a normal year the Michigan State basketball schedule would have been finalized a few months ago and weā€™d already be able to play the win-loss prediction game as the season neared. However, as we all know by now 2020 has been far from a normal year so it is no surprise that we are less than two months out from the opening tip of the season and we still donā€™t know who, when or where exactly MSU will be hitting the hardwood this year.

The good news is thereā€™s been a flurry of reports over the past few weeks giving us the opportunity to piece together the Spartansā€™ 2020-21 slate as we await for the final schedule to be released from the school. A number of national media members and college basketball insiders have put out reports related to the Spartans in the past two weeks, making it easy to connect the dots on what Michigan Stateā€™s schedule will look like this season.

Hereā€™s what we know about the upcoming Michigan State basketball schedule — keeping in mind that these are reports from undisclosed sources,Ā  and that we are still awaiting the official schedule to be released from the program.

MSU will open season with Orlando Invitational

Thanks to Jon Rothstein, college basketball insider with CBS Sports, we now know the Spartans will start the 2020-21 season with the Orlando Invitational. Rothstein reported on Tuesday that the Orlando Invitational will take place from Nov. 25 – 27, and with Nov. 25 being the first official day games can take place this year, itā€™s now evident that the Spartans will open the campaign with this early-season tournament.

The other teams in the tournament currently include potential-preseason No.1 Gonzaga, Auburn, Xavier, Belmont, St. Louis and Boise State. The eighth team is still to be determined at this point.

We are still waiting to see how the bracket looks, but we at least know the Spartansā€™ first three games of the season will take place in the Orlando Invitational.

Spartans-Blue Devils renew rivalry to start December

Based on the rotation of teams, we knew entering this year that Michigan State would face off against Duke in the Champions Classic, but we werenā€™t sure exactly when and where. Jeff Goodman of Stadium confirmed earlier reports that the Champions Classic will be played on Dec. 1, and will also take place in the Orlando bubble.

This will be the fifth straight year the Spartans and Blue Devils will battle on the hardwood, with Duke winning three of the last four meetings — including last year at the Breslin Center.

ACC-Big Ten Challenge: We know when and potentially where, but not who

It was reported last week that the ACC-Big Ten Challenge would move forward as originally planned with games taking place on-campus on Dec. 8 and/or Dec. 9. Depending on how the rest of the schedule shakes out, this will most likely be the Spartansā€™ first game played outside of the Orlando bubble, and potentially the first true road game of the year for Michigan State. The Spartans hosted Duke last year in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge so expect them to be on the road this season.

With Duke already on the schedule, potential opponents for Michigan State in this year’s edition of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge includes North Carolina, Virginia, Louisville or Florida State. Andy Katz of NCAA.com believes the Spartans and Cavaliers would make for a great early-season match-up.

Rest of schedule still left to be determined

Based on all of these reports, five of the maximum seven non-conference games are accounted for meaning there are still two open spots. Michigan State is contracted to play in the Gavitt Games as well, which pits the Big Ten against the Big East, but reports indicate that the Spartans won’t participate in this year’s event. If the event is played, then the Spartans will have one remaining non-conference game left to add.

Expect the Big Ten to keep the same 20-game model as the past two seasons to round out the rest of the 2020-21 schedule. In previous years, Big Ten teams have played at least two games in the month of December but at this point there is no indication if that will continue this season or not.

Report: Champions Classic, MSU Basketball season opener targeting Dec. 1st

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the NCAA is targeting December 1st for the Champion’s Classic.

[jwplayer jfqW8Fxm]

We have all been waiting to hear when MSU Basketball will start their season officially, and it looks like they at least have a date circled. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the NCAA currently has a date of Dec. 1st targeted for the 2020 Champion’s Classic.

The Champion’s Classic has been Michigan State’s season opener for nearly a decade and also includes Kansas, Kentucky and Duke in a rotating match-up.

According to many reports, the Champion’s Classic will be taking place in Florida in a bubble environment similar to what we’ve seen from the NBA and WNBA.

Michigan State Basketball to play at least two games, Champions Classic in Orlando bubble

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the NCAA will implement a bubble format for the start of the basketball season, including MSU.

[jwplayer W4ONB6vg]

The NBA bubble currently taking place in Orlando, Florida has done so well that it appears the NCAA is going to follow suit for at least a short period of time for their Men’s Basketball competition.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the NCAA is currently planning to host eight early-season college basketball events in Orlando using a bubble format, including the Champion’s Classic. Michigan State is currently slated to face Duke in the annual event that they have been involved with, along with Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas, since 2011.

In addition to the Champion’s Classic, Rothstein reported that the Spartans will play in the Orlando Invitational, which includes Gonzaga, Auburn, Xavier, Saint Louis, Boise State, Belmont, and Siena.

According to Rothstein, there will be no fans in attendance in these games and more games could be announced in the future to take advantage of the bubble to give teams more non-conference games. This certainly explains the NCAA trademarking ‘Battle in the Bubble’ a few weeks ago.

Michigan State lost their game in the Champion’s Classic last year to Kentucky.
