LSU football and baseball collaborate on star safety’s recruitment

LSU football and baseball teamed up to recruit one of the top safeties in the country.

Two-sport stars aren’t new to LSU. Many will remember [autotag]Chad Jones[/autotag], who was All-SEC on the gridiron and won a national championship on the baseball field. More recently, [autotag]Maurice Hampton[/autotag] was a member of both squads.

That’s the vision LSU athletics tried to sell to five-star safety [autotag]Jonah Williams[/autotag] this weekend.

“Jonah Williams is the definition of a two-sport star,” On3’s profile reads, “Along with being named the district MVP in football during his sophomore season, he’s also widely regarded as one of the top baseball talents in the Lone Star State.”

On his visit, Williams threw on an LSU baseball uniform for a photoshoot. If playing both sports is valued by Williams, that could boost LSU’s chances in this recruitment. Few schools offer the high profile LSU does on the football field and baseball field.

According to the On3 Prediction Machine, Oklahoma is the leader right now with Texas A&M in second place.

All four major recruiting sites rank Williams as the top safety in the 2025 class. 247Sports is the highest on his talents, ranking Williams as the No. 7 overall recruit in the class.

LSU’s 2025 class is one of the best in the country right now, but there’s still a way to go. The Tigers have 11 commitments, including the nation’s top recruit QB [autotag]Bryce Underwood[/autotag].

Tyrann Mathieu breaks down his top five LSU athletes of all time

Tyrann Mathieu breaks down his top five LSU Tigers athletes of all time, admits he’s ‘a little biased’ with top choice

Tyrann Mathieu’s presence on the New Orleans Saints has lived up to expectations — after leading the team in solo tackles and interceptions last season, the veteran safety has continued to lead the charge on and off the field. Mathieu recently coached up dozens of young athletes from the New Orleans community at his Heart of a Badger youth football camp at the Saints’ Metairie practice facility, and afterwards he fielded questions from the local media.

Here’s a fun one. Mathieu made some compelling arguments for his choices when asked to rank his top-five LSU Tigers by Jacob Verdin of The Verdin Verdict sports talk show:

Son of former LSU athlete Chad Jones participates in Tigers camp

A son of a former LSU star was at LSU’s recruiting camp.

The son of a former LSU two-sport standout took part in LSU’s recruiting camp over the weekend.

[autotag]Chad Jones Jr.[/autotag] posted a photo of himself and [autotag]Frank Wilson[/autotag], saying he appreciated the opportunity to be there.

His father, [autotag]Chad Jones[/autotag], had an illustrious career at LSU.

Jones was a contributor on the 2007 national title team. In 2009, he was second team All-SEC and had one of the best single-game performances in LSU history against Mississippi State.

You might remember Jones’ from that week. Jones dodged several Bulldog defenders en route to a 94-yard punt return touchdown.

To go along with his football championship ring, Jones got one with the baseball team. He was a top reliever for Paul Mainieri’s group that year and helped clinch LSU’s title win in Omaha.

It doesn’t seem Jones Jr. has a scholarship offer from LSU, but it’s nice to see him at the recruiting camp. He plays for Southern Lab High School in Baton Rouge.
