When do CFP rankings come out? Date, time for Georgia football

Georgia football will learn where it stands in the second CFP rankings after their loss to Ole Miss

The Georgia Bulldogs have their backs against the wall after losing 28-10 to Ole Miss. Fortunately, we are no longer in the four-team College Football Playoff era.

Georgia remains a SEC championship contender, but the Bulldogs must defeat the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday. Tennessee is on top of the SEC standings. Georgia has to win the SEC championship in order to secure a first-round bye in the playoff.

Georgia football College Football Playoff projection

We project Georgia to be ranked No. 11 in the second playoff rankings behind a pair of two-loss teams in Alabama and Ole Miss. Georgia lost to both Alabama and Ole Miss. We do think Georgia will be ranked over several one-loss teams like Miami and SMU. Georgia was No. 3 in the previous playoff rankings.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The top four seeds will be on a bye as the CFP kicks off. The next four highest-seeded teams will host on-campus playoff games as follows:

  • No. 5 vs No. 12, winner will play No. 4

  • No. 7 vs No. 10, winner will play No. 2
  • No. 8 vs No. 9, winner will play No. 1

CFP ranks Ohio State over Georgia because of better loss

Why the playoff committee ranks Ohio State over Georgia despite the Buckeyes having only one ranked win and just four wins over Power Four opponents

The College Football Playoff committee ranked the Ohio State Buckeyes No. 2 and the Georgia Bulldogs No. 3 in one of the biggest surprises of the initial playoff rankings.

The CFP selection committee chair Warde Manuel explained their decision to rank the Buckeyes over Georgia.

“Well, they both had great wins… in terms of on the road Ohio State won at Penn State this week… Georgia at Texas. But what we felt is that in terms of the losses they had, Ohio State lost to No. 1 Oregon by one and Georgia lost at Alabama, who is ranked No. 11. So that was really the difference,” said the selection committee chair.

“We’re splitting hairs in terms of looking at two great teams,” continued Manuel.

The committee’s decision to rank Ohio State over Georgia is a bit of a surprise. The Buckeyes have four Power Four wins this season, one ranked win, and are 2-1 in road games. Georgia has six Power Four wins, two ranked wins, and are 2-1 in road games.

“Those things (Georgia’s recent subpar performances) we took into consideration as a part of the discussion. And ultimately the vote, when it came out, Ohio State was ranked No. 2 and Georgia was No. 3,” explained Manuel.

Georgia has not exactly looked consistent according to the eye test this season, but there’s no denying that Georgia has more impressive wins than Ohio State. The Bulldogs beat No. 23 Clemson at a neutral site and No. 5 Texas on the road.

Georgia’s next chance to impress the playoff committee will be on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET against the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels.

Where’s UGA football in latest College Football Playoff ranking?

Where the committee has ranked Georgia in the College Football Playoff rankings and who UGA would play

(This story was updated to add new information.)

With the first College Football Playoff bracket projection coming out, people wondered where the Georgia Bulldogs would land. Well, the committee ranked the Georgia Bulldogs No. 3, behind only Ohio State and Oregon. That means Georgia would be the No. 2 seed if the playoffs started this week.

It’s a strange turn of events for the Bulldogs, who have had impressive wins against the No. 23 Clemson Tigers and the No. 5 Texas Longhorns but lost to No. 11 Alabama. In contrast, Ohio State has not beaten a top-25 opponent outside of Penn State, which had a limited Drew Allar at quarterback.

However, Georgia looked inconsistent against Mississippi State, Kentucky and Florida. Still, UGA is on top of the SEC standings and ranks No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Some of that inconsistency has come from Carson Beck’s sloppy play. He has six interceptions in the last two games and 11 interceptions in the last five.

The Georgia defense has been holding the fort, led by potential first-round picks Mykel Williams and Malaki Starks, star freshman safety K.J. Bolden, and the incredible play of linebackers CJ Allen, Raylen Wilson and Jalon Walker.

Where’s Alabama in latest College Football Playoff bracket? Full playoff picture

Alabama landed at No. 11 in the latest College Football Rankings. Here’s a playoff picture for the Crimson Tide.

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season were officially unveiled live on ESPN Tuesday night. Here’s what you need to know about the Alabama Crimson Tide after the initial rankings release.

Alabama (6-2 overall) was ranked in the same spot in the initial CFP rankings as their current standing in both the Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll. The Crimson Tide were ranked No. 11.

With two losses already and at 6-2 overall, Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide cannot avoid another setback. That’s the simple reality. Alabama got some help over the weekend when three teams ranked ahead of them in the polls fell: Clemson, Iowa State and Texas A&M.

To no surprise, the Oregon Ducks took the No. 1 overall spot in the initial CFP rankings. Dan Lanning’s team is 9-0 and have spent the past three weeks atop the Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll.

Ohio State checked in at No. 2, with Georgia at No. 3.

Where can I watch the CFP rankings for Georgia football?

2024’s first College Football Playoff rankings will be released today. Where they rank UGA football? Here’s how to watch.

The Georgia Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1) have the best record in the SEC and are the highest ranked SEC team in the US LBM Coaches Poll at No. 2. However, Georgia is coming off an unimpressive 34-20 win over the Florida Gators.

Georgia’s spot in the initial College Football Playoff rankings is up in the air. UGA could be slotted as the No. 2 or No. 3 team. Anything else would be a major surprise.

Barring a shocking upset, Georgia’s path to the playoff is relatively clear. The Bulldogs need to beat Tennessee or Ole Miss and win their other games in order to secure a berth in the playoff. Of course, Georgia will try to win the SEC to earn a first-round bye in the expanded playoff.

Georgia football CFP rankings projection

We project Georgia to be ranked No. 2 in the initial playoff rankings behind the undefeated Oregon Ducks. We think Georgia will be ranked over Ohio State since Georgia has played a much tougher schedule.

UGA has ranked wins over Texas and Clemson. Ohio State is just 4-1 against Power Four opponents, while Georgia is 6-1. We don’t envision the committee being able to overlook this even though Georgia has been involved in several close games.

Ohio State, who are national title favorites, did just beat Penn State on the road, but the Buckeyes just have not played as many challenging games at Georgia.

College Football Playoff rankings show: Where to watch, stream for Notre Dame

2024’s first CFP rankings will offer an early look at the playoff bracket for [TEAM] football. Here’s how to watch.

While the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Poll both give us a glimpse at how good teams really are, Notre Dame and many other college football teams really want to know where they stand in front of the College Football Playoff committee.

With the playoff going from 4 teams to 12, it brings a level of excitement that we have yet to see. The expectation is that Oregon will be the top team, as they’ve shown it on the field so far this fall.

After that, it is a mystery, as teams like Ohio State, Georgia, Miami, Texas, Tennessee, Penn State and the Irish all should be safety inside the top-8 when they are announced.

While this matters, it doesn’t as much as it will later in the season when everything shakes out. It is a good barometer for teams, as they’ll know where they stand.

Notre Dame football CFP rankings projection

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Notre Dame getting ranked inside the top-8, but higher than that isn’t a likely scenario. The loss to Northern Illinois is the worst of the one-loss teams, so that most likely will hurt the Irish in the eyes of the committee.

Where is Georgia in CFP ranking projections ahead of Alabama game

Where is UGA ranked in ESPN’s CFP projections ahead of the Georgia at Alabama game?

ESPN projects that the Georgia Bulldogs would be the No. 2 team in their predicted College Football Playoff rankings. However, since the Texas Longhorns are ranked ahead of Georgia, the Bulldogs would not get a bye in the playoff. Only the SEC championship winner will have the luxury of a bye week in the playoff.

ESPN college football expert Heather Dinich (subscription required) predicts that Georgia’s recent win over Kentucky would prevent the Bulldogs from being ranked No. 1. “Georgia’s ugly 13-12 win against Kentucky is still holding it back,” said Dinich.

Georgia, who had a bye in Week 4, will play a massive road game against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sept. 28. A win over the Crimson Tide would look very good on Georgia’s résumé, which looks stronger based on how Clemson is playing.

“The Bulldogs’ season-opening win against Clemson is even more impressive after the Tigers’ back-to-back dominant wins against App State and NC State. After scoring just three points against Georgia, Clemson has scored at least 59 points in consecutive wins,” said Dinich.

Clemson is looking like an early favorite to make the ACC championship game along with Miami. Georgia’s 34-3 win over Clemson is the Dawgs’ most impressive win so far. UGA will love to earn a win over Alabama to move to 4-0 on Saturday.

Alabama, who also had an extra week to prepare, represents a major challenge for Georgia. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is just 1-5 in his career against Alabama.

The Bulldogs primarily focused on themselves during their bye week. Georgia has many things to clean up after the Kentucky game.

“What do you do in the bye week? You look back at yourself,” said Kirby Smart. “You look back and you do quality control. You try to find tendency breakers. You try to find new wrinkles. You try to really get better at blocking and tackling, which is what football is. That’s what we focused on.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Georgia also used its bye week to heal up ahead of the Alabama game. The Bulldogs have been missing several key pieces along their defensive line.

Yahoo! Sports gives Irish strong College Football Playoff title hopes

Do you agree with Yahoo! here?

The preseason previews continue to roll in, and another outlet has put Notre Dame football in its top-10.

Yahoo! Sports is doing a series on teams that it thinks will be in the newly expanded College Football Playoff, and Nick Bromberg has Notre Dame ranked at No. 7.

Unfortunately, he remind us that while the Irish did lose three games last season, they also played Ohio State more closely than in they year before, and that most of Notre Dame’s wins were blowouts, save for a one-touchdown victory over Duke.

Speaking of Duke, Notre Dame added Riley Leonard as a transfer this year — Leonard was in Durham last season. Bromberg uses the addition of Leonard, the return of a deep core of talent (particularly on defense), and a “manageable” schedule as reasons why the Irish will be in the 12-team field.

Bromberg rightly points out that the offensive line will have to replace three starters and that Florida State and USC are the toughest games on the Irish schedule. That said, even a 10-2 team is likely to qualify for the CFP.

As a reminder, if Notre Dame does make it to the CFP, they aren’t eligible for a first-round bye since those will go to conference champions. The possible highest-seed for the Irish is number five.

Tigers check in at No. 13 in final College Football Playoff rankings

The committee made perhaps the most controversial decision in its history on Sunday.

Championship weekend is behind us, but the chaos it wrought may linger in the sport for a while.

It resulted in perhaps the committee’s most controversial decision in the College Football Playoff era as it snubbed an undefeated ACC Champion Florida State team in favor of Alabama, which won the SEC with an upset against Georgia that snapped a record 29-game win streak for the Bulldogs.

Now, the field is set as Michigan will take on the Crimson Tide in one semifinal while Washington takes on Texas in the other.

Outside of the top group, there wasn’t a ton of shakeup in the final rankings, and LSU remains similarly situated as it does in both polls after championship weekend.

Here’s the full top 25 in the committee’s final rankings.
