USC and Ceyair Wright both won on Saturday

Ceyair Wright didn’t beat his former team, but he made a few very big plays to show USC that he can play ball. It was an authoritative return to the Coliseum.

The Nebraska-USC game offered one powerful plot twist, among others. When Ceyair Wright committed to USC in January of 2021, he was supposed to be the next great Trojan defensive back. Unfortunately, things never quite worked out for Wright at USC. Although he saw decent playing time and became a solid role player, he was never really able to lock down a spot as a full-time starter, and was away from the team for significant portion of time in 2023.

Last offseason, Wright decided to transfer to Nebraska. On Saturday, he returned to the Coliseum as a visitor for the first time.

Facing his former team, Wright made two huge plays that significantly affected the outcome. On the Trojans’ second possession, Wright picked off new USC starting quarterback Jayden Maiava and ran it back 45 yards for a touchdown. It was the first score of Wright’s college career, and just his third interception.

Then in the fourth quarter, with USC leading 21-20, the Trojans lined up for a 27-yard field goal attempt to stretch their lead to four. What should have been a chip shot for kicker Michael Lantz, however, never even made it to the uprights, as Wright blocked the kick, keeping the lead at one.

Wright’s two huge plays had a massive impact on the direction of the game. His pick six gave Nebraska seven points, while his blocked field goal prevented USC from recording three. Essentially, then, one Nebraska player—who just so happened to have started his college career at USC—was responsible for a 10-point swing.

Ultimately, though, the Trojans got the last laugh over Wright, as USC survived with a 28-20 victory.

Wright had his moments against his former team.

His former team still won. Nebraska didn’t win, but Wright made his statement.

Nebraska DB Ceyair Wright with pick-six, blocked field goal against former school USC

Nebraska’s Ceyair Wright had a big game against his former school, USC

The outcome was up in the air in the fourth quarter on Saturday at the LA Coliseum. Ceyair Wright of Nebraska had already made a personal statement against USC.

The DB used the transfer portal to make his way from Los Angeles to the Cornhuskers. With USC in the Big Ten, he played a road game at a place he called home for two seasons.

Against the Trojans, Wright had a pick-six and blocked a field-goal attempt by USC, which led 28-20 in the fourth quarter.

Nebraska has had a rough season but it made s sharp pickup in Wright.

WATCH: Huskers CB Ceyair Wright snags pick-six for early lead

Ceyair Wright made his impact felt early.

Nebraska football had the first score of the game against the USC Trojans in a bit of an unorthodox way. The Huskers recorded a pick-six courtesy of Ceyair Wright. The former Trojan halted the opposing drive and gave the Huskers a 7-0 lead following the extra point.

It was Wright’s first pick-six of his career as well as his first interception of the season.  It was also Nebraska’s second pick-six of the season. The interception helped Nebraska football set the defensive tone early.

USC was able to answer right back on the ensuing drive, but the interception gave Nebraska a bit of a cushion early on.

Both programs have high-powered offenses. Wright’s interception may prove to be a key point in the game, as both defenses figure to be tested throughout the afternoon. At the very least, he gave himself a homecoming memory to remember.

Nebraska announces two new Blackshirt recipients Monday

Nebraska football handed out two new Blackshirts on Monday.

Nebraska football punter Brian Buschini was one of two new Blackshirt recipients on Monday. Coach Matt Rhule explained why the punter got a Blackshirt.

Buschini and cornerback Ceyair Wright were officially recognized as members of the exclusive club. The punter has tallied 18 punts for an average of 47.6 yards per kick. His 69-yard punt against Rutgers was his longest of the season. He has also registered eight kicks inside the 20-yard line.

Wright also was a Blackshirt recipient. The USC transfer has fit in sturdily with the Nebraska defense. He has 16 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one interception, and four pass deflections over the season’s first six games. With injuries to Tommi Hill, he became a vital part of the secondary.

Rhule explained why the punter got a Blackshirt at his Monday press conference. It wasn’t entirely up to him, as the defensive players also had a hand in Buschini’s selection.

“The way he’s impacted the game defensively. I had talked to Jason Peter a couple weeks ago and asked how that worked. He said at the bowl game those guys always get it. They said Coach (Mike) Riley or Coach (Sean) Callahan had done it once with a punter in the middle of the season. So I just wanted to stick with tradition, but when Marques Buford texted me at home and said, ‘coach, we need Buschini in black,’ I thought that was a tremendous message, whether it was the tackles at Purdue on the game-saving tackles during the field goals. The punts he made last week, to get hit like that, some guys get hurt and they come out to finish the game, he accelerated. I did it because it was from the players, they feel like he is part of that unit so let’s roll.”

Both Wright and Buschini embody what it means to be a Blackshirt. Their selfless play and work ethic have really shone through as Nebraska looks to become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016.

Nebraska football lands USC transfer Ceyair Wright

Ceyair Wright starts over at Nebraska.

Former USC cornerback Ceyair Wright has signed with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. It’s a Big Ten college football transfer, something we wouldn’t have been able to say at this time one year ago.

Wright, who entered the transfer portal on April 25 after three seasons at USC, announced his commitment to Nebraska on Friday afternoon following an official visit to Lincoln earlier in the week. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

In 2021, Wright was rated as the No. 78 overall prospect in the country and No. 7 corner, from 247 Sports. Nebraska was among his finalists at the time, though he committed to USC before visiting Lincoln.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Wright played in 23 career games during his time with the Trojans. The 2022 season was his most productive, as he played in all 14 games with 11 starts. He recorded 28 tackles, one interception and two pass breakups that season.

The former top-100 prospect and four-star recruit in the 2021 class has previously been an actor, appearing in several movies, TV shows and commercials. He played a fictional son of LeBron James in “Space Jam 2in 2021. He also appeared on the ABC comedy “Grown-ish.”

During his senior year at Loyola High School, he was the focus of a “Dual Threat” documentary produced by Overtime.

A Top 100 recruit in the 2021 class, Wright played football at Loyola High School before heading to USC. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior will have two years of eligibility remaining when he arrives at Nebraska.

He will join a deep defensive back room containing D’Andre Barnes, Mario Buford, and Jeremiah Charles.

Wright is also an actor, a fourth-year junior. He has appeared in movies such as “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” in which he plays one of LeBron James’ sons, and the series “Grown-ish,” in which he has a recurring role as Zeke Bracey.

One of the top defensive players in the transfer portal is being projected to join the Nebraska Cornhuskers. USC cornerback Ceyair Wright is in Lincoln this week, and the Huskers may close the deal.

Multiple recruiting services have projected Wright to transfer to Nebraska for the upcoming season. This past fall, Wright played in seven games and recorded 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss.

The Los Angeles native recorded 30 tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups across 16 games and 11 starts. In late April, Wright entered the transfer portal, signaling the end of his time with the Trojans.

Nebraska to host USC transfer CB Ceyair Wright

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are hosting a transfer target from the West Coast this weekend.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers will be hosting a veteran cornerback in the transfer portal this weekend. According to Sean Callahan of Huskers Online, USC transfer cornerback Ceyair Wright will be in Lincoln this weekend.

The Los Angeles native recorded 30 tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups across 16 games and 11 starts, according to his USC profile. Notably, 14 of those games and all 11 starts came in the 2022 season as a redshirt freshman. This past fall, Wright played in seven games, recording 11 tackles, including one tackle for loss. He also had three pass deflections.

In late April, Wright entered the transfer portal, signaling the end of his time with the Trojans. He’ll have two years of eligibility to play at his next destination.

Ceyair Wright embodies USC’s lost and failed 2023 season

This was one of many busts in the USC secondary this season.

USC cornerback Ceyair Wright hasn’t played for USC since the Trojans’ Oct. 14 loss to Notre Dame. He hasn’t been spotted at practice in recent weeks either. Asked to provide an update on Wright after practice earlier this week, USC head coach Lincoln Riley said: “He’s not with us right now, and that’s all that I can say about it.”

His bigger claim to fame than football, though, is acting. Wright played a starring role in “Space Jam: A New Legacy” as Darius James. He has also appeared on the ABC comedy “Grown-ish.”

Off the field, he has more than 68,000 social media followers. During his senior year at Loyola High School, he was the focus of a “Dual Threat” documentary produced by Overtime.

On the field this season, Wright has three pass breakups, a tackle for loss and 11 total tackles in 2023.

Last year, Wright started 11 games for the Trojans, but lost his starting job at the end of the season.

Wright entered the season as USC’s most experienced returning cornerback after playing nearly 650 total snaps last season, including 592 defensive snaps.

Wright having Hollywood billing but very few results on the field matches USC’s “all sizzle, no steak” identity this season under Lincoln Riley and Alex Grinch.

Let’s see what the future holds for Wright, whether it’s on the football field or on the screen with his acting chops.

Lincoln Riley discusses Ceyair Wright’s evolution in the USC secondary

Riley sees substantial growth in a player who can lift the #USC secondary to the next level.

The defensive line is the most important position group for USC this season, but the secondary is close behind at number two. In a loaded Pac-12 which features lots of top quarterbacks and passing attacks, the Trojan back line will need to hold up.

One piece of the puzzle in the USC secondary is Ceyair Wright. In a 247Sports profile and evaluation from Chris Trevino, Lincoln Riley spoke about Wright’s development:

“Despite ending the season in a rotation, Wright has taken the initial experience and embraced the competition to take his play to another level. Wright drew rave reviews in spring camp as one of the standout defenders, operating with the first-team defense once again.

“‘He’s been one of the breakout players. It sounds weird to say a breakout player for a guy that I think started nine games for us last year. You don’t typically say those things together,’ head coach Lincoln Riley said in the spring. ‘But his improvement and some of the playmaking that he’s had has been substantial. The difference has been as substantial as anybody on our roster through six practices.'”
