Jets bring back Cedric Ogbuehi, sign veteran tackle to practice squad

Cedric Ogbuehi is back with the Jets.

The Jets brought back a familiar face Thursday by signing veteran offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to their practice squad. To make room, the Jets released offensive lineman Ryan Swoboda.

Ogbuehi returns to the Jets after appearing in seven games last season for the team including five starts. He had also re-signed with the team in April but was released in May.

Ogbuehi, a 2015 first-round pick of the Bengals, gives the Jets another veteran option along the offensive line, particularly with some question marks occurring. Duane Brown missed two days of practice this week and rookie Carter Warren remains on injured reserve. If Brown can’t go, Billy Turner and Mekhi Becton would likely be the two starters with Max Mitchell as the backup. Ogbuehi at least now gives the Jets a potential veteran practice-squad elevation candidate in case they need it.

Swoboda joined the Jets’ practice squad on August 31 when the Jets were first building the group for 2023 following their cutdown to 53 players. He was an undrafted rookie out of Central Florida who spent training camp with the Detroit Lions.

Breaking down the contract terms for new Dolphins OT Cedric Ogbuehi

There’s very little guaranteed.

The Miami Dolphins, with questions at offensive tackle this offseason, have brought in both rookies and veterans to challenge Austin Jackson for the starting job as well as potentially provide depth if Jackson is the starter.

Seven-year veteran Cedric Ogbuehi was one of the more experienced tackles that Miami gave a deal to this offseason. According to Over the Cap, the Dolphins and Ogbuehi agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.35 million.

The 31-year-old is set to earn roughly $1.17 million in a base salary. The deal also includes a $50,000 signing bonus and $135,000 in a roster bonus. The only guaranteed money on the salary cap is the signing bonus, so if Ogbuehi were beaten out for a roster spot, Miami could cut him, save $1.3 million and be stuck with just $50,000 in dead cap.

With this information, it’s hard to say that his spot is a guarantee when the regular season rolls around. Isaiah Wynn, another veteran tackle who the Dolphins brought in along with Ogbuehi, was given a larger guarantee and has more recent consistent starting experience.

They also have players with some positional versatility like Robert Jones and Ryan Hayes who could potentially be depth at both guard and tackle, making it even harder for Ogbuehi to make the roster as someone who has never played a snap on the interior.

A look back at his past stops.

The Miami Dolphins, after agreeing to a deal with former New England Patriots offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn, jumped back into the market at the same position, signing Cedric Ogbuehi.

Ogbuehi will have an opportunity, along with Wynn and Austin Jackson, to compete for the starting right tackle job. The losers of that competition will still hold a valuable role as the swing tackle behind guys with injury concerns.

Before Ogbuehi steps on the field in aqua and orange, let’s take a look back at the best photos from his prior stops in his career.

Former Texas A&M OT Cedric Ogbuehi has signed with the Miami Dolphins

Former Texas A&M standout offensive tackle and first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft has reportedly signed with the Miami Dolphins.

Recent reports indicate that Cedric Ogbuehi, a former outstanding offensive tackle for Texas A&M between 2010 and 2014, has officially signed with the Miami Dolphins as of Monday afternoon. In the 2015 NFL Draft, Ogbuehi was chosen as the 21st overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals. His exceptional performance as an offensive tackle during his senior season in 2014, and his versatility, made him a valuable selection for the Bengals.

After three up-and-down seasons in Cincinnati playing both right and left tackle while appearing in just 25 games, Ogbuehi has made his way around the league the last four years, starting in 2019 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, 2020 with the Seattle Seahawks, 2021 with the Baltimore Ravens and the 2022 season with the New York Jets, where he started four games at right tackle.

Head coach Mike McDaniel’s offensive line for Miami is all but set. However, uncertainty at the starting right tackle spot is still in question, hence signing another experienced veteran joining recent OT free agent signing, Isaiah Wynn, with versatility at the tackle spot. Now for the fantastic Texas A&M connection; Ogbuehi will be joining former standout Aggies running back De’Von Achane, who the Dolphins recently drafted in the 3rd round of the 2023 NFL Draft if he can make the team. Good luck, Cedric! Gig ‘Em!

Dolphins sign former Jets OT Cedric Ogbuehi

Another name to add to the competition.

The Miami Dolphins have an opening at their right tackle spot, despite general manager Chris Grier saying that he expects Austin Jackson to be the starter for the 2023 season.

For the second time in two days, the Dolphins signed a new offensive tackle, this time agreeing to a deal with Cedric Ogbuehi.

Ogbuehi, 31, was originally a first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2015 draft. After starting just 25 games throughout his rookie contract, he spent 2019 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, 2020 with the Seattle Seahawks, 2021 with the Seahawks and Ravens and 2022 with the New York Jets.

His time with the Jets last year should be helpful, as he’ll be playing in a similar offensive system in Miami.

Through training camp and the preseason, Ogbuehi will have the opportunity to compete with Austin Jackson and Isaiah Wynn for the responsibility of protecting Tua Tagovailoa’s blind side.

Jets release Cedric Ogbuehi

Jets release Cedric Ogbuehi

The Jets have released offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

The Jets just had just re-signed Ogbuehi, who started five games in 2022, three weeks ago. Since then, the Jets added veteran Billy Turner and drafted Carter Warren. Duane Brown, Mekhi Becton and Max Mitchell are also still in the mix at tackle.

The Jets also drafted center Joe Tippmann in the second round, so their line depth is much stronger than it was a few weeks ago, making Ogbuehi the odd man out.

Jets designate Cedric Ogbuehi for return from injured reserve

The New York Jets could be getting some extra help back on the offensive line this week. The Jets designated offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to return from practice after being on injured reserve and missing the last four games with a groin injury.

Per Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press, Ogbuehi could be activated to the roster in time for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Before being placed on injured reserve after Week 12, Ogbuehi started four games at right tackle in place of the injured Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Ogbuehi’s return will give the Jets four tackles on the active roster along with Duane Brown, George Fant and Mike Remmers. The Jets also have tackles Sam Schlueter and Eric Smith on the practice squad.

Ravens waive OT Cedric Ogbuehi

The Ravens waived offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi on Friday

The Baltimore Ravens have been hit hard by injuries over the course of the 2021 season. The team has tried many different methods in order to make up for the productive play of some of the stars that they’ve been missing.

One of the many signings that Baltimore has made was that of offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi. The former Cincinnati Bengals first round pick was released by the Seattle Seahawks in the middle of the year. The Ravens scooped him up in hopes that he could contribute, but a thigh injury prevented him from playing, prompting Baltimore to waive him on Friday.

Ogbuehi now finds himself looking for a new team once again, while Baltimore will move forward with the offensive tackle depth that they already have on their roster that includes Alejandro Villanueva, Patrick Mekari, and Tyre Phillips.

Ravens announce inactives for Week 11 matchup vs. Bears

The Ravens officially announced their inactives list ahead of their Week 11 game with the Chicago Bears

The Baltimore Ravens’ inactive list for Week 11 against the Chicago Bears has a lot of big-name players on it, namely quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson has been dealing with an illness for most of the week but looked like he was going to be playing after coming back to practice on Friday.

Things took a turn on Saturday afternoon when Jackson was put back on the injured list and downgraded to questionable.  He tried to give it a go today before the game, but he’s clearly still not feeling like himself. Backup quarterback Tyler Huntley will make his first-career start today for Baltimore.

The Ravens’ secondary is also taking a hit this afternoon with cornerbacks Jimmy Smith and Anthony Averett both inactive.  This season has been a brutal one in terms of injuries for Baltimore, but they need to continue to persevere if they want to maintain their lead in the AFC North Division race.

The remainder of the inactives for the Ravens are wide receiver Marquise Brown and Miles Boykin, offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and defensive tackle Brandon Williams. The team used every inactive spot on an injured/sick player.

The Bears put out their inactives list as well, and they will also be missing multiple key contributors.
