Notre Dame-Pitt: Former Irish running back currently Panthers leading rusher

A familiar face is coming back to South Bend

When Notre Dame and Pittsburgh do battle on Saturday afternoon in South Bend it’ll be a game that features a couple of former Fighting Irish standouts now wearing a different shade of blue.

Linebacker Shayne Simon and running back [autotag]C’Bo Flemister[/autotag] both spent four seasons at Notre Dame before transferring and ending up at Pitt.

Flemister said earlier this week of his decision to attend Notre Dame out of high school, where he wound up getting his degree:

“The big attraction to me personally was my future,” Flemsiter said. “They preach four for 40. Four years for the next 40 years of your life. You’re building a huge network. That alumni network is awesome. That was pretty much my biggest deciding factor. I’m looking 40 years down the road how going there could have helped me coming out of high school.”

Flemister currently leads Pitt with 282 rushing yards and has added a pair of touchdown runs.  He’s come on largely over the past two games for Pitt, who is just 2-5 on the year.

Know your foe Pittsburgh: With Panthers could give Notre Dame problems

More than a few familiar faces the Irish will line up against on Saturday

There is going to be a somewhat familiar feel for a few [autotag]Pittsburgh[/autotag] players as they are set to face off against [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] this weekend.

Why you ask? Well, a few of them were once members of the Irish football team, the most recognizable is quarterback, err tight end [autotag]Phil Jurkovec[/autotag], although we most likely won’t see him this weekend except for maybe special teams after he lost the starting job earlier this season. So, we won’t touch on him here anymore.

However, there are others on the Panther team that will be easily recognized by Irish fans. Let’s take a look at which Pittsburgh players could give Notre Dame problems this Saturday afternoon.

Pittsburgh statistical leaders through seven games

You might recognize a couple of these names.

Notre Dame fans will see a couple of familiar faces when their team battles Pittsburgh. That’s because the Panthers’ top quarterback and running back both once donned the blue and gold. In fact, a lot of the Panthers’ best players are transfers, either because they didn’t get the opportunities they sought at other programs or they wanted to use up college eligibility elsewhere. Either way, many of these Panthers didn’t start as Panthers.

Is that part of the reason the Panthers’ offense isn’t as strong as their defense? Perhaps, but either way, most of this season has not gone well for the Steel City program. The fact that they handled Louisville and the Irish didn’t is not a good look for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and his staff. Alas, nothing can be done to change that now.

Assuming the Panthers can make this a game, here are the players most likely to do that:

Notre Dame’s top 25 3-star recruits since 2010

Just because someone is a three-star doesn’t mean they can’t be great.

In the world of recruiting, rankings clearly matter. It’s no shock that when you look at the best teams nationally, they’re the ones who usually ranked the highest in team recruiting rankings during the previous three or four years.  Maybe the top team doesn’t always have the top class, but you can bet they’re in or right there with the top-five nationally.

Another key part of recruiting comes to finding those diamonds in the rough.  That isn’t to knock three-star talents, but the hype around them clearly isn’t the same when a five-star prospect visits campus or commits to a program.

We decided to go back and rank the top three-star players Notre Dame brought to campus dating to the start of Brian Kelly’s run at Notre Dame that began with the 2010 recruiting class. Here are the top 25 of those such players in the last roughly dozen years.

The 247Sports composite was used in each player’s star rating for this piece.

Former Notre Dame running back headed to Pitt

All the best to him going forward!

Former Notre Dame running back C’Bo Flemister entered the transfer portal this past spring after rushing for 10 touchdowns during his time with the Fighting Irish.  Flemister announced on Sunday that he’ll be taking his talents east and spending the 2022 football season at Pitt.

As a junior in 2020, Flemister ran for 299 yards and five touchdowns.  His career high for rushing yards in a game actually came against Pitt that season when he racked up 48 yards and a touchdown in a 45-3 Notre Dame victory.

Flemister’s time was limited in 2021 after he fled the scene of an automobile accident during spring football and had just three rushing attempts.

Flemister will be a graduate transfer to Pitt but will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Notre Dame is slated to host Pitt during the 2023 season as part of the rotation the Irish share annually with ACC opponents.

C’Bo Flemister – look back at his Notre Dame career

All the best to C’Bo going forward!

[autotag]C’Bo Flemister[/autotag] was part of Notre Dame’s 2018 recruiting class as he was rated as a three-star running back out of Pike County High School in Georgia.  Although never a lead back for the Fighting Irish, Flemister had a few moments in the sun and found the end zone 10 times in his Notre Dame career.

Flemister had an off the field issue after a promising 2020 season that led to him hardly seeing the field whatsoever in 2021.  The running back’s career high in yards came when he ran for 58 at Georgia Tech in 2020 while he ran for 53 more and a pair of scores against Boston College two weeks later.

Flemister entered the transfer portal a couple of weeks back and officially posted his goodbye to Notre Dame on Monday.  Take a look back at Flemister’s Notre Dame stats and some of his best pictures with the Fighting Irish below.

STATS:

  • 110 carries for 471 yards (4.3 ypc), 10 rushing touchdowns
  • 3 receptions for 49 yards (16.3 ypr)

Transfer running back says goodbye to Notre Dame

He was a monster against BC in 2020…

Notre Dame running back C’Bo Flemister officially entered the transfer portal earlier this spring after Marcus Freeman made it known that he wouldn’t be returning to the program.  Although we already knew he was gone from Notre Dame’s football team and that he had entered the portal, Flemister himself hadn’t said anything about it publicly.

That was, at least until Monday morning when the graduate running back with two years of eligibility remaining tweeted a farewell to Notre Dame as he’s leaving as a graduate transfer.

Flemister finished his Notre Dame career with 110 carries for 471 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he ends up playing football next.

Notre Dame running back enters transfer portal

Where will he end up?

We’ve known since the start of spring practice that [autotag]C’Bo Flemister[/autotag] was no longer part of the Notre Dame football team but we weren’t sure what his future in football was.  We still don’t know where he’ll be playing next but we do now know that he’s officially entering the transfer portal.

Flemister, a graduate student, ran for 10 touchdowns combined in 2019 and 2020 but saw the field in just four games and received just three carries last year after an off-the-field incident last spring.  [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] announced that Flemister would no longer be part of the Notre Dame football team at the start of spring camp.

Flemister’s biggest game at Notre Dame came when injuries were mounting against Boston College in 2020 and he took 10 handoffs for 53 yards and two scores while also hauling in a 23-yard reception.

Flemister is listed at 5-11, 201 pounds and is from Williamson, Georgia.

Notre Dame football: Veteran running back no longer part of roster

Surprised by this at all?

Notre Dame opens up spring practice for the 2022 season Thursday as new head coach Marcus Freeman gets his first crack at the annual practice window.  Freeman met the media early Thursday morning and announced a veteran running back is officially no longer part of the Fighting Irish roster.

C’Bo Flemister, who ran for 10 touchdowns and 471 yards during his time at Notre Dame, is no longer on the roster and that status won’t be changing according to Freeman.

Flemister was suspended for much of the 2021 season after leaving the scene of an accident and then misleading police in their investigation as to what happened.
