Colts trade QB Carson Wentz to Washington for package of picks

#Eagles will deal with Carson Wentz twice a year now after the #Colts traded the former No. 2 overall pick to the #WashingtonCommanders #Commanders for draft picks

In a move that should heat up an already heated up NFC East rivalry, the Washington Commanders are acquiring former Eagles and current Colts quarterback Carson Wentz for a package of draft picks.

The Colts were already on the books for the $15 million in guarantees, but the trade which was completed before March 18, saves Indianapolis $13.3 million against the salary cap, while avoiding having to pay a $6.3 million bonus.

If Wentz was on the team post-March 18, then his $22 million base salary would have been fully guaranteed.

The move comes almost a year after the Colts agreed to acquire Wentz from Philadelphia in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick — which became a first-round pick based on a snap count threshold reached.

Wentz is now having to reassess his future again after imploding down the stretch, including an ugly loss in the season finale to the Jaguars.

Colts agree to trade QB Carson Wentz to Commanders

BREAKING: The Colts have agreed to trade QB Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.

The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Colts are reportedly getting back a package of draft picks that will include two third-round picks.

After just one season with the Colts, Wentz is already on his way out. There are still three years left on his current contract but the guaranteed money ends after the 2022 season.

After a disastrous 2020 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Colts acquired Wentz for a 2021 third-round and conditional 2022 second-round pick. Since the conditions were met, that second-round pick turned into a first-rounder for the Eagles and wound up being the No. 16 overall pick.

Though he certainly improved on his 2020 numbers, Wentz proved to be more of the same quarterback we had seen throughout his career. He showed flashes of brilliance but his erratic accuracy, inability to convert quick passes and a hero complex that led to questionable decision-making ultimately resulted in extremely volatile play.

For the 2021 season, Wentz made every start for just the third time in his career. He completed 62.4% of his passes for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.6 passer rating. He ranked 16th among NFL quarterbacks according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA metric.

The nail on the coffin was the final month of the season when Wentz completed 58.3% of his passes for 615 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions and an 86.1 passer rating. His 4.4 QBR in the Week 18 play-in game against the Jaguars was one of the worst starting performances in Colts history.

With Wentz now gone, the Colts will look for another quarterback. What that holds remains to be seen, but Indy is cutting their losses after just one season.

It should be noted that this trade does not become official until March 16 at 4:00 p.m. ET, which is when the new league year begins.

The Browns and Eagles made the ‘Carson Wentz’ trade 5 years ago today

The Browns picked up a ton of picks for Wentz

All is quiet right now on the Browns draft front, but that was not the case five years ago. On this date, April 20, back in 2016, the Browns made a massive trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s commonly known as the “Carson Wentz” trade now, for the Eagles aggressively moved up from No. 8 overall to acquire the Browns pick at No. 2 overall in the 2016 NFL draft.

The Eagles dealt the No. 8 pick, a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2016, as well as their 2017 first-rounder and a 2018 second-round pick to jump up so they could ensure they were getting Wentz.

The trade wound up having a freaky amount of tentacles that are still not fully unraveled. The Browns traded the No. 8 pick to Tennessee and dealt several of the other picks. It’s a string we previously unraveled in a lengthy tracker of all the trade outcomes.

The Eagles traded Wentz to Indianapolis this offseason after the luster badly burned off his rising star.
