Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards undeterred by first-year challenges

Celtics rookie forward Carsen Edwards might not have had all the success he’d hoped in 2019-20 so far, but he’s undeterred.

Boston Celtics rookie guard Carsen Edwards probably hasn’t had the level of success he hoped for in his first season in the NBA, but it isn’t deterring him either.

“I understand it’s a process for me,” began the Purdue product in a recent video made for the team. “I just got to worry about what I can control.”

Rookies tend to struggle when they face the hyper-efficient, rapidfire speed of the Association, and the transition for the former Boilermaker has been a bit bumpy in that regard.

Shooting 30.9 % from deep and just 32.9 % overall can’t be pleasant for a 36.8 % career collegiate 3-point shooter who normally connected on 41.2 % of his field goals at the NCAA level.

But Edwards is prepared to keep working, knowing only sustained effort will get him to where he wants to be. “For me personally, it’s been a little more challenging like now [that] I got to this level,” he observed.

“Anyone that knows me just knows how competitive I am and that’s one thing [about] why I love the game — it’s being able to go at people,” offered the first-year guard. “I continue learn from this experience and continue to try to stay ready.”

Edwards started to turn a corner just before the coronavirus pandemic put the 2019-20 NBA season on ice, his shooting trending up again after a tough December and January. But instead of letting it get to him, the Texas native instead sees an opportunity instead.

“My main focus is just continue to move forward. [and] understand you can do this — you’re here for a reason; keep your confidence and you should continue to work.”

Edwards may have temporarily misplaced his shooting touch, but he’s not wrong about the confidence component.

He is on the Celtics roster for a reason, and if he keeps putting in the work, the game will eventually slow down enough for him to find the bottom of the net like he’s used to doing.

Missing March Madness: Carsen Edwards vs. Grant Williams

In one of the marquee matchups of Missing March Madness, Grant Williams’ Tennessee Volunteers fall to Carsen Edwards’ Purdue Boilermakers.

Our Missing March Madness series has arrived at one of the marquee dates of the team’s NCAA Tournament history.

While there aren’t live collegiate or NBA games to entertain us, a look back at this clash of two Celtics rookies is one of the highlights of Celtics NCAA history. But two old Big East foes also played games on this date more than 10 years earlier as well.

That latter duo were UConn’s Kemba Walker and Pitts’ Brad Wanamaker.

Both were still reserves in those years, and the former advanced while the latter went home to try again.

Walker’s Huskies defeated the Missouri Tigers 82-75 in the 2009 Elite Eight, earning a Final Four appearance against Michigan State.

The Bronx native had one of the best games of his career in the meeting, logging 23 points, 5 rebounds and as many assists, showing flashes of the All-Star he’d become.

Wanamaker’s Panthers flopped at the last moment to the Villanova Wildcats, falling 78-76.

The Philadelphia native would only score 5 points in the loss, but he’d return to dance again in future seasons.

The main event from a Celtics perspective was the 2019 meeting between forward Grant Williams’ Tennessee Vols and guard Carsen Edwards’ Purdue Boilermakers, however.

An intense, overtime thriller that nearly ended on dunk by Williams and a miss by Edwards, a whistle would send the game to an extra period.

Purdue put the Vols away with the second chance the Texan sharpshooter secured by hitting two of his three opportunities at the stripe, winning 99-94 and advancing to face Virgina in the Elite Eight.

Edwards logged 29 points and his now-teammate Williams 21 and 7 boards.

They still debate that foul to this day.

Missing March Madness: Carsen Edwards, Timelord win in the first round

With no NBA or NCAA basketball, we’re looking back at how current Boston Celtics did in the big dance on the anniversary of the games.

As part of our efforts at the Celtics Wire to keep ourselves busy without any NBA or NCAA basketball, we’re taking a look back at the performance of current Boston Celtics during their college days.

While not everyone on Boston’s roster made it into the big dance due to back luck, injuries, or getting started on another continent, 12 of the team’s 17 players have had at least some experience with the collegiate game’s biggest event.

So we’re looking back on those games on their anniversaries, and March 16th has three games played in the big dance by current Celtics — a pair for guard Carsen Edwards and another for center Robert Williams III.

Let’s start with the Timelord, who saw his Texas A&M Aggies advance against the Providence Friars, who fell 73-69 to the Aggies.

Williams’ 13 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks helped make it happen on this day in 2018.

Rookie guard Carsen Edwards played in the NCAA tournament twice on this date, both victories for his Purdue Boilermakers.

The first of the two games was a win over the Vermont Catamounts in the round of 64 in 2017.

The Catamounts conducted themselves well as a 13-seed against 4-seed Purdue, but fell 80-70 as they were outclassed with the Boilermakers’ deep reserve of talent — and Edwards’ 12 points off the bench.

The second of the Texan guard’s March 16th Tournament games was against the Cal State Fullerton Titans in 2018, and by then Edwards was elevated to a starter.

Scoring 15 points for the Boilermakers, Purdue would crush the Titans 74-48 in the first-round win.

Celtics send Carsen Edwards, Vincent Poirier to play with Red Claws

The Boston Celtics are sending first-year guard Carsen Edwards and center Vincent Poirier north to play with the Maine Red Claws friday night.

The Boston Celtics have sent rookie guard Carsen Edwards and first-year center Vincent Poirier to Portland to play with the Maine Red Claws, according to the team.

The duo will join Boston’s two way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters as the Celtics’ G League affiliate take on the Grand Rapids Drive — the developmental affiliate of the Detroit Pistons — at the Portland Expo Center Friday evening.

Boston is likely hoping the additional reps with the Claws will help warm up the duo as bench contributors as the team begins to truly dive into the stretch run and race for the second seed in the East.

It seems unlikely either is in danger of being cut despite some fans and analysts continuing to clamor for an end-of-bench contract to be cut in favor of some new blood to improve the Celtics’ terrible bench scoring.

Edwards in particular has shown flashes of being the sort of bench scorer Boston needs to make a deep run in the postseason, but has lacked the same swagger and efficiency seen in Summer League and G League assignments to date.

Carsen Edwards to re-join the Maine Red Claws in the G League

The second-round pick is averaging 23.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 12 appearances with the Red Claws this season.

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards has been assigned to the Maine Red Claws in the G League, the team announced on Friday morning. The Red Claws host the Grand Rapids Drive on Friday night.

The appearance for Edwards with the Red Claws is his first in a month after last suiting up in the G League on Feb. 6 against the Canton Charge. Edwards recorded 22 points and three rebounds in that game.

The second-round pick logged four appearances with the Celtics during his last stint with the team, most recently scoring eight points in 16 minutes of work on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets.

Edwards has played sporadically this season with the Celtics, appearing in 35 games. With playing time often at a premium for Edwards, the Celtics have sent him to the G League a few different times to get some work.

Edwards is averaging 23.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 12 appearances with the Red Claws this season. He scored a season-high 41 points on Feb. 1 against the Greensboro Swarm.

Grant Williams vacationed with Carsen Edwards, others in the Bahamas

A few players from the Celtics linked up on vacation in the Bahamas over All-Star Weekend.

With the NBA at the All-Star break, several players around the league began their time off from basketball by taking a much-needed rest with friends and family on vacation.

Several players on the Boston Celtics got together for a trip to the Bahamas.

Celtics center Vincent Poirier posted a photo on Twitter Sunday night of the trip as rookie teammates Grant Williams and Carsen Edwards were among those that went.

Of course, the trio of players was not involved in the festivities of All-Star Weekend so they got a head start on their week off by having some fun in paradise.

Williams has emerged as a key player for the Celtics this season. Though he is only averaging 3.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, Williams often does the dirty work on the court and has given head coach Brad Stevens a solid defensive option against opposing big men.

As the trio of Celtics players return to their team this week, the group will be looking to secure its place among the top three in the Eastern Conference as they currently sit third with a 38-16 record.

Celtics’ trio of rookies set to re-join the Red Claws on Thursday

Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters and Tacko Fall are all expected to play Thursday night in the G League.

With the Boston Celtics idle on Thursday night, rookie players Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters and Tacko Fall are all expected to be with the Maine Red Claws in the G League.

Waters and Fall each played less than a minute with the Celtics on Wednesday in a 116-100 win over the Orlando Magic while Edwards did not play.

Waters and Edwards each last played with the Red Claws on Saturday as the team has been off in the meantime. Fall was last in the G League on Friday, recording 12 points and six rebounds.

The Red Claws tip-off on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.

With the Celtics boasting such productive rookies, the Red Claws have emerged as one of the best teams in the G League after posting a 21-8 record, which is second-best in the Eastern Conference.

After Thursday, the Red Claws return to action on Saturday on the road against the Wisconsin Herd.

Carsen Edwards erupted for 41 points in the G League on Saturday

The Celtics’ second-round pick had the eighth-best performance in the G League this season after scoring a career-high 41 points.

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards scored a career-high 41 points on assignment with the Maine Red Claws in the G League Saturday night in a 119-117 win over the Greensboro Swarm.

The second-round pick finished by shooting 14-of-28 from the field, including 6-of-13 from 3-point range. Edwards also added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Edwards’ 41 points mark the eighth-most by an individual player in the G League this season as Justin Patton of the OKC Blue has the best performance with 45 points set on Jan. 14.

Edwards has seen limited action with the Celtics as of late and has played recently with the Red Claws. In 11 games in the G League, Edwards is averaging 23.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

After his performance on Saturday, Edwards is averaging 34 points over his last three games for the Red Claws.

While the Celtics haven’t needed Edwards for stretches this season, he has stayed ready when called upon and his time with the Red Claws has been a big reason why.

Carsen Edwards scores 41 points on 50 % shooting with Red Claws

Boston Celtics rookie Carsen Edwards scored 41 points on 14-of-28 points in a win for the Maine Red Claws, and Tremont Waters added 16 points, 8 assists and a game-winner.

It was a good night last night for the Boston Celtics last night, even the ones playing with the Maine Red Claws.

While the parent club was busy beating the pants off of the Philadelphia 76ers for the first time this season, rookie Carsen Edwards went off for 41 points with the team’s G League affiliate, hitting 14-of-28 shots and 6-of-13 overall.

He also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Tremont Waters bounced back from a middling performance in his prior contest, scoring 16 points, 8 assists and 2 steals while going 6-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.

He nearly went 3-of-5 with a last-second game-winner, too, but it was ruled a two after review.

The duo helped carry the Red Claws to a 119-117 win over the Greensboro Swarm, the G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets.

The Red Claws next face the Canton Charge (the Cleveland Cavaliers’ developmental affiliate) at home on Thursday, February 6th at 7pm.
