Hurricanes at Flames projected goalies

Frederik Andersen (2-1-0, 2.35 GAA, .920 SV%) vs. Thatcher Demko (0-4-1, 4.24 GAA, .858 SV%)

Andersen is back in the crease for Carolina after getting a rest in Calgary behind Antti Raanta. The Great Dane won his only start against the Canucks last season in Raleigh, turning aside 30 of the 31 shots he faced in a 4-1 won Jan. 15, 2022.

Demko has allowed 4 or more goals in 4 of his 5 outings, and 3 or more goals in each start so far. He was shelled for 4 goals on just 26 shots in a 5-1 loss at home against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

Hurricanes at Canucks picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Canucks 2

Moneyline

The HURRICANES (-150) are looking to get back on track by doing what they do best, beat the bottom-feeders. Carolina struggled a bit against contending teams in Alberta, but it has victories against Columbus, San Jose and Seattle, and will get another one here. Don’t be dissuaded by the fact the home team has won 9 of the last 10 in this series. Vancouver is playing bad hockey right now.

Puck line/Against the spread

The HURRICANES -1.5 (+150) are worth a roll of the dice here. Demko has been more than giving, and the Canucks +1.5 (-190) are really struggling in all facets of the game right now. The team can’t buy goals, and can’t stop giving them up.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (+102) is the lean here, but not because of the Canucks. Vancouver has been horrific on the penalty kill, ranking 31st out of 32 teams at 58.8%. It is also yielding 4.4 goals per game.

The Hurricanes are playing pretty good hockey, however, and Carolina has allowed just 1 goal in each of its 3 wins. It should get the win here, and as such, Carolina won’t allow much.

Hurricanes at Canucks projected goalies

Antti Raanta (4-1-1, 2.41 GAA, .904 SV%) vs. Thatcher Demko (11-11-1, 2.73 GAA, .915 SV%, 1 SO)

Raanta allowed just 2 goals on 34 shots in a win last time out against the Buffalo Sabres Dec. 4. He gets the nod here after Frederik Andersen made the start in Edmonton Saturday.

Demko has won three straight starts, including a shutout of the Los Angeles Kings Dec. 6. He has allowed just 4 goals on 104 shots during his current win streak.

Hurricanes at Canucks odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Canucks 2

Money line

The HURRICANES (-130) haven’t been fazed over the years playing back-to-back games. The young Carolina team has had a quick recovery period, going 28-8 in the past 36 occasions when playing on no rest. They’ll cool off the Canucks but it certainly won’t be easy.

Against the spread

The Canucks +1.5 (-270) would normally be the play, as I expect this to be a one-goal game. Vancouver has been playing well, but you can’t risk this kind of money for such little reward.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the way to be here. The Under is 5-1-1 in Carolina’s last seven road games and 10-3-3 in its last 16 overall.

The Under is 8-3-1 in the past 12 overall for Vancouver, and 20-6-4 in its last 30 games at home. The Canucks are also 4-0 to the Under in their last four as underdogs.
