The Cowboys interior defensive line woes have taken another hit as the team is placing tackle Jordan Phillips on injured reserve with a wrist injury. Phillips will miss at least the next four weeks of the season. Dallas acquired the 11th-year defender from the division rival New York Giants for a 2026 sixth-round pick. In return, Dallas received Phillips along with a 2026 seventh-rounder.

The Cowboys next four opponents are the Ravens, Giants, Steelers, and Lions. Phillips could be eligible to return prior to the Cowboys October 27 game against San Francisco.

Phillips was supposed to shore up the Cowboys run game woes yet his 26.1 PFF grade against the New Orleans Saints was among the many things that went wrong for Dallas in the blowout home-opener loss.

The Cowboys worked quickly to fill his roster spot, bringing back a familiar face in defensive tackle Carlos Watkins.

Watkins played for Dallas from 2021 through 2022. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Texans.

After Dallas suffered an exodus of free agents leaving for Washington to follow their new head coach Dan Quinn, Dallas struck back,  poaching Watkins off the Commanders practice squad.

Questions about the Cowboys run defense will continue to be asked until the team can consistently find a way to slow opponents down.

Watch: Newly signed Rams DT Carlos Watkins records strip-sack in 1st game

Carlos Watkins is wasting no time making an impact with the Rams

The Los Angeles Rams added some depth to their defensive line this week when they signed veteran Carlos Watkins, bringing in a proven player to help behind the starters up front. He wasted no time making an impact on defense, showing up in his first preseason game on Saturday.

In the third quarter, Watkins got home for a sack, jarring the ball loose in the process as he brought Luis Perez to the ground. The Rams recovered and took over in Chargers territory, making it a big play for Watkins and the defense as a whole.

Take a look at the strip-sack below.

Former Tiger lands with the Rams.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Rams on Wednesday added to their defensive line room, signing veteran Carlos Watkins.

Watkins, 30, most recently played for the Arizona Cardinals. His 2023 season with them was cut short by a Week 2 bicep injury that landed him on Injured Reserve for the remainder of the year.

Prior to his time in Arizona, he played two seasons for the Dallas Cowboys.

Watkins originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick out of Clemson by the Houston Texans in 2017, where he played his first four NFL seasons. He has recorded 139 total tackles and 6 sacks across 71 career games (37 starts) in seven seasons.

Rams sign veteran DL Carlos Watkins

The Rams are adding depth to their defensive line, signing former fourth-rounder Carlos Watkins

The Los Angeles Rams are adding some depth to their defensive line. The team announced the signing of veteran Carlos Watkins on Wednesday, bolstering a group that lost Aaron Donald to retirement this offseason.

Watkins, 30, came into the NFL as a fourth-round pick in 2017, getting selected 142nd overall by the Texans. He played four years in Houston before joining the Cowboys in 2021. He spent two seasons in Dallas and then signed with the Cardinals last year.

In his career, Watkins has played 71 games and made 37 starts, recording 139 total tackles with six sacks. He brings great size to the defensive line at 6-foot-3 and 305 pounds, so he could compete for snaps at nose tackle behind Bobby Brown III and Tyler Davis.

The Rams waived Tanner Brown on Tuesday night so they had an open roster spot, which has been filled by Watkins.

2 player connections in Cardinals-Cowboys matchup in Week 3, but neither likely to play

Carlos Watkins will be placed on injured reserve this week and Sean Harlow is on Dallas’ practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals play the Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium in Week 3. The two teams each have a player connection to the other team. The Cardinals have one former Cowboy and the Cowboys have a former Cardinal.

Neither is likely to play.

The former Cowboys player on Arizona’s roster is defensive lineman Carlos Watkins. He played for the Cowboys for two seasons before signing with the Cardinals.

However, he injured his biceps and will have surgery. He will be placed on injured reserve this week and will not face his former team.

For the Cowboys, the one player they have who played for the Cardinals is offensive lineman Sean Harlow. He is on the practice squad. He could be elevated for the game but he has not played yet this season.

DL Carlos Watkins out indefinitely, needs biceps surgery

Watson needs biceps surgery and, like L.J. Collier, will be out perhaps the rest of the season.

The Arizona Cardinals have suffered another big bow to their defense. Starting defensive lineman L.J. Collier and starting safety Budda Baker already have landed on injured reserve.

Defensive lineman Carlos Watkins, who replaced Collier in the starting lineup, will join them.

He suffered a biceps injury on Sunday and, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon, will need surgery. He will be out indefinitely, which means we can expect to see him placed on injured reserve this week, meaning he will miss playing the team he played for the last two seasons.

Collier is also out indefinitely after biceps surgery. It is unlikely either will return this season.

Baker will return but must miss at least the next four games.

Watkins is the Cardinals’ most accomplished and veteran defensive lineman. Watkins has seven tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit and a tipped pass in two games.

Watkins, in his seventh season, signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals in the offseason.

DL Carlos Watkins suffers biceps injury in loss to Giants

The Cardinals are already down tow D-linemen. Watkins could miss a significant amount of time.

The Arizona Cardinals were down two starting defensive linemen on Sunday when they lost 31-28 to the New York Giants. One of their replacement starters, veteran Carlos Watkins, got hurt in the game.

Watkins had two tackles and a tipped pass in the first half but exited with what was called an arm injury.

After the game, head coach Jonathan Gannon said Watkins has a biceps injury.

This, of course, should give fans reason to be worried. Fellow defensive lineman L.J. Collier suffered a biceps injury last week. He is on injured reserve and, according to Gannon, it will be “a long time” to come back from it. He didn’t sound optimistic that Collier would be able to return this season.

If Watkins has a similar injury, that would mean losing two veteran defensive linemen on a unit that is lean on talent and experience.

New DL Carlos Watkins likes fit with Cardinals

He liked the vision that Jonathan Gannon and Nick Rallis have, and believes the scheme will allow him to make plays.

The Arizona Cardinals have not done much on the defensive line this offseason. Their biggest move was to add former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Carlos Watkins.

He is the most experienced D-lineman on the roster now.

The Cowboys wanted him back but the decision wasn’t hard for him to sign with Arizona.

“I could just see the vision,” he told reporters of what head coach Jonathan Gannon and defensive coordinator Nick Rallis shared with Watkins when he was wooed by the team.

“I think this was the best fit for me and my family and what I’ve got going on,”  he said.

Watkins sees the Cardinals’ defense as different than what he was doing in Dallas.

“Up front, we just get a little more freedom to play forward and do what a D-lineman does,” he said. “There are things within the scheme that really help us out and that are beneficial to me to make plays.

“It makes a lot of sense for me to be here.”

The Cardinals get an experienced defensive lineman for a one-year deal worth less than $2 million. What do you think of the addition?

One of the Arizona Cardinals’ offseason moves in free agency was signing former Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Carlos Watkins.

The 6-foot-3, 305-pound defensive tackle has been in the league since 2017, when he was drafted in the fourth round by the Texans. He spent four seasons with the Texans and two with the Cowboys.

In his career, he has 132 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, five sacks, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, six pass breakups and an interception he returned for a touchdown.
