Report: Carlos Polk a candidate for Giants special teams coordinator position

Chicago Bears assistant special teams coach Carlos Polk has emerged as a ST coordinator candidate for the New York Giants.

The New York Giants continue their search to fill various coordinator and assistant coaching roles, including the special teams coordinator role left vacant following the termination of Thomas McGaughey.

The latest name to emerge as a potential candidate is Chicago Bears assistant special teams coach Carlos Polk.

The 46-year-old Polk was a fourth-round pick of the then-San Diego Chargers in the 2001 NFL draft. He spent seven seasons with the club before joining the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 and retiring in 2009.

Following his playing days, Polk immediately jumped into the world of coaching. He served as the Grossmont College assistant special teams coach in 2009 and then re-joined the Chargers in the same role through the 2012 season. He also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Polk was hired by the Bears in 2022.

Bears hire Carlos Polk as assistant special teams coach

The Bears have added another assistant to their staff in Carlos Polk as assistant special teams coach.

The Chicago Bears have filled out Matt Eberflus’ coaching staff, which includes an impressive list of names that are aiming to get the team back on track.

But Chicago isn’t done adding assistant position coaches. The Bears announced they’ve hired Carlos Polk as assistant special teams coach. He’ll work with new special teams coordinator Richard Hightower.

Polk, a former linebacker with the Los Angeles Chargers (2001-07) and Dallas Cowboys (2008), has 10 seasons of NFL coaching experience. He’s served as assistant special teams coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2021), Cowboys (2019), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-18) and Chargers (2010-12). He first got his start as a coaching intern with Dallas in 2013.

Eberflus has assembled an impressive coaching staff, which includes offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, defensive coordinator Alan Williams, Hightower and quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, among others.

Here’s a look at how Eberflus’ coaching staff has filled out, from coordinators to position coaches to assistant position coaches:

Jaguars announce pair of changes to the coaching staff

The Jaguars hired Kyle Caskey as an offensive quality control coach and promoted Carlos Polk to assistant special teams coordinator.

With the 2021 season about to kick off on Sunday for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team decided to make a final round of changes to its coaching staff. On Thursday, Jacksonville announced that it had added Kyle Caskey as an offensive quality control coach and promoted special teams assistant Carlos Polk to the role of assistant special teams coordinator.

Caskey joined the staff at LSU earlier this offseason as an offensive analyst after previously serving as the running backs coach for the Detroit Lions from 2019-20. Now in Jacksonville, Caskey reunites with Jags offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who held the same role with Caskey in Detroit. Before that, Caskey held several roles as an assistant with the Cincinnati Bengals for nine years.

Polk, meanwhile, was out of the league in 2020 after spending the 2019 season as a special teams assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. An eight-year NFL veteran who enters his 10th year as a professional assistant coach, Polk will help out Nick Sorensen, who was hired as special teams coordinator this summer.

With these hires, it seems coach Urban Meyer has finally completed his staff just a few days before the team begins play against the Houston Texans.

Report: Jags expected to hire Carlos Polk as their assistant special teams coach

The Jags have reportedly found their assistant special teams coach in Carlos Polk.

Last Friday, it was announced that the Jacksonville Jaguars would be hiring former Seattle Seahawks special teams coordinator Brian Schneider as their special teams coach — and it appears they’ve now found him some help. According to ESPN Field Yates, former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Carlos Polk will be the Jags’ assistant special teams coach.

Polk, 43, started his coaching career in 2009 with the San Diego Chargers who drafted him. He spent four seasons there before heading to the Tampa Bay Bucs where he spent five seasons and found his way to Dallas with the Cowboys in 2019. While with the Bucs, Polk worked with Jags offensive line coach George Warhop. Each stint was as an assistant special teams coach.

Polk was drafted by the Chargers in the fourth round of the 2001 draft. He played there until 2007 and ended his career with the Cowboys in 2008. Polk exited the NFL with 121 total tackles (101 solo) and four sacks over the span of 74 games.

Schneider and Polk will combine for 22 years of NFL experience. While with Jacksonville they will work with two of the best special teamers in the NFL in kicker Josh Lambo and punter Logan Cooke.
