16 former UFC fighters who could return to the promotion in 2023

It’s hard to make it to the UFC once, let alone a second time, but these fighters have a chance in 2023.

It’s hard to make it to the UFC.

Thousands of professional fighters try every year – and most fail. For a small percentage, however, they sign their names on the dotted line to fight for the biggest MMA promotion in the world.

Sometimes the opportunity comes a bit too soon. Other times, they’re faced with difficult matchups that time proves were bigger challenges than originally anticipated.

When the pink slip comes and a fighter departs the promotion, there is often a phrase they hear on the way out: “Go get a few more wins, and the UFC will consider bringing you back.”

Easier said than done.

For the vast majority, they won’t be back. However, it’s not impossible. A number of fighters have done it over the years. Just look at UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno. He was released from the promotion, built his way back, became a contender, and then won a UFC title.

In recent memory, others like Brandon Davis, Jesse Ronson, Nicolas Dalby, Chase Sherman, Sean Soriano, and Dustin Jacoby have reinforced the possibility.

With the new year upon us, here are 16 former UFC fighters who could return to the promotion in 2023.

Note: Fighters considered for this list had to have competed in at least one UFC bout.

Heavyweight Carlos Felipe released from UFC amid NAC suspension

The UFC released Brazilian heavyweight Carlos Felipe amid his Nevada Athletic Commission suspension.

[autotag]Carlos Felipe[/autotag] is no longer a UFC athlete.

The heavyweight fighter has been released from the UFC amid his Nevada Athletic Commission suspension. MMA Junkie confirmed the news following an initial report from MMA Fighting on Tuesday.

Felipe (11-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) was given an 18-month suspension by NAC in January after testing positive for boldenone, an anabolic steroid, following his October fight with Andrei Arlovski at UFC Fight Night 195, which the Brazilian lost via decision. Felipe is eligible to return to action on April 16, 2023.

This wasn’t the first time Felipe was sanctioned due to a failed drug test. He was previously suspended for two years in 2017 by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for metabolites of stanozolol, a steroid, prior to his planned promotional debut.

Felipe made his debut with the UFC in 2020. The 27-year-old competed five times under the promotion. He lost his debut vis decision against Sergey Spivak and then won three straight before losing to Arlovski last October.

UFC heavyweight Carlos Felipe suspended 18 months for failed drug screen

UFC heavyweight Carlos Felipe has been suspended 18 months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

LAS VEGAS – UFC heavyweight [autotag]Carlos Felipe[/autotag] has been suspended 18 months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Felipe (11-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) tested positive for boldenone, an anabolic steroid, following his October fight with Andrei Arlovski at UFC Fight Night 195, which the Brazilian lost via decision.

The suspension was issued at Tuesday’s monthly commission meeting at the Nevada State Business Center. As part of the adjudication agreement, Felipe is eligible to return to action on April 16, 2023 and must pay a fine of $4,200, or 15 percent of his $28,000 purse, as well as attorney’s fees of $489.

Additionally, prior to his next fight in Nevada, Felipe must submit to drug testing 30 days, 15 days and 3 days ahead of the contest.

Felipe’s manager, Tiago Okamura, told MMA Fighting that his client maintains his innocence but did not want to commit the financial resources needed to contest the case, which he anticipated would be around $10,000.

Felipe was previously suspended for two years in 2017 by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency after testing positive for metabolites of stanozolol, a steroid, prior to his planned promotional debut. A second suspension from the UFC’s official anti-doping partner could carry a four-year suspension.

A request for comment from USADA by MMA Junkie was not immediately returned.

Additionally, Georgian bantamweight [autotag]Zviad Lazishvili[/autotag] was suspended nine months by the NSAC for a failed test associated with his October 23 loss to Jonathan Martinez at UFC Fight Night 196. Lazishvili tested positive for clomiphene, a selective estrogen receptor modulator.

Lazishvili was also fined $1,800, or 15 percent of his $12,000 purse, and must pay attorney’s fees of $326. As part of the adjudication agreement, he is eligible to compete again on July 23 and must submit to drug testing 30 days, 15 days and 3 days ahead of the contest.

UFC Fight Night 195 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The main event of the 10-fight card saw [autotag]Norma Dumont[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) outwork [autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) to a unanimous decision in the women’s featherweight matchup.

UFC Fight Night 195 results: Andrei Arlovski edges Carlos Felipe, extends heavyweight wins record

Andrei Arlovski added to his record for most wins in heavyweight history with a decision in the UFC Fight Night 196 co-main event.

[autotag]Andrei Arlovski[/autotag] continued to be a timeless part of the heavyweight division when he beat another far younger opponent Saturday at UFC Fight Night 195.

Arlovski (32-20 MMA, 21-14 UFC) extended his record for most wins in divisional history and climbed into sole possession of fourth most wins overall in UFC history with a unanimous decision win over [autotag]Carlos Felipe[/autotag] (11-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) by unanimous 29-28 scores.

The heavyweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 195 co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

The first round was a relatively tactical battle. Arlovski stayed on the outside of the striking range and mixed up kicks and punches, while Felipe’s output largely revolved around the boxing. Both men has their moments, but nothing of fight-altering significance landed.

It was more of the same in the second round. Arlovski gained some confidence in his ability to take shots and land further inside the pocket. Felipe’s output dropped off from the first round until the final 45 seconds of Round 2, where he started getting through Arlovski’s guard and landing some shots that proved more effective.

With the need to pick things up going into Round 3, Felipe did just that. He got somewhat lucky when Arlovski slipped off a kick and managed to land some good strikes as Arlovski got up and back to his feet, but it was everything he has remaining in the tank. Arlovski pushed back down the stretch with volume punches, but there was no finish before the final bell.

An almost entirely standup affair was left to the perspective of the judges, and all three saw it in Arlovski’s favor.

“I’m like Nike: Just do it,” Arlovski said of his ability to keep winning during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping.

UFC Fight Night 195: Andrei Arlovski vs. Carlos Felipe odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 195 odds and lines between Andrei Arlovski vs. Carlos Felipe, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a heavyweight bout on the main card, Andrei Arlovski meets Carlos Felipe Saturday at UFC Fight Night 195 – also known as UFC Vegas 40 and UFC on ESPN+ 53 – at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Below, we analyze the UFC Fight Night 195 Arlovski vs. Felipe odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims at 4:30 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET.

The 42-year-old “Pitbull” is coming off a unanimous-decision victory April 17 against Chase Sherman and has won three of his last four, all via UD. His three losses since the start of 2019 are against Augusto Sakai, Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Tom Aspinall, three of the top fighters in the division. Just two of his last 12 fights, excluding a no contest in 2018, have ended via stoppage.

Felipe, who was just four years old when Arlovski turned pro in 1999, enters on a three-bout win streak since losing his UFC debut to Serghei Spivac in July 2020. All four of his fights at the UFC level have gone the distance.

UFC Fight Night 195 Arlovski vs. Felipe: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Arlovski (31-20-0) | Felipe (11-1-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

People have continually tried to write off the veteran Arlovski, but he is like Rasputin. He has been a veteran for a long time, yet he just continues to re-invent himself and stay at the top of his game.

However, FELIPE (-112) is a beast. He holds a 4.88-to-3.62 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, and while Arlovski has a two-inch reach advantage, Felipe will find a way to get next to the veteran and work the body.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both of these fighters haven’t had a lot of stoppages lately. Arlovski has had three of his last four fights go the distance while seeing just two stoppages in his last 12.

Felipe is 4-for-4 going the distance at the UFC level. As such, YES (-155): WILL THIS FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is the way to go. I’d play FELIPE ON POINTS (+225) lightly in the Method of Victory, too.
