Cards Wire staff picks for Cardinals-Lions

Check out Cards Wire’s predictions for the game against the Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals take on the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium. Both teams are 1-1 on the season, both having beat the L.A. Rams.

The Lions are the favored team.

Who do we think will win? Below are our staff game picks and predictions for the game.

Jess Root: As much as I would like to think the Cardinals can pull off the upset and show they are better than advertised, Detroit’s run defense will keep them from playing from ahead. They go toe-to-toe with the Lions and come up short.

Lions 30, Cardinals 24

Howard Balzer: Consistency is the most important goal in the NFL, and that’s what the Cardinals will be striving for Sunday against the Detroit Lions. Just like it was important to put opening-week loss to the Buffalo Bills behind them, now they have to do the same thing Sunday and stack victories if they aim to reach their own expectations. It won’t be easy, albeit against a Lions team that lost at home to Tampa Bay last week and are on the road for the first time this season. There does seem to be something special being built within the Cardinals, and executing a plan against defensive end Aidan Hutchinson will be critical.

Cardinals 23, Lions 21

We will see whose prediction is better!

RT Kelvin Beachum seems unlikely to play as Cardinals elevate 2 tackles from practice squad

With the elevation of Jackson Barton and Charlie Heck, it seems likely that Kelvin Beachum won’t be able to play.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves ahead of their Week 3 game against the Detroit Lions. They announced that tackles Jackson Barton and Charlie Heck were elevated from the practice squad. It is the second straight week that Barton has been elevated.

With the elevation of both Barton and Heck, it would appear that the Cardinals will not have right tackle Kelvin Beachum, questionable to play with a hamstring injury.

That means the Cardinals will face Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who has 5.5 sacks through two games, with a third-string right tackle.

Beachum replaced Jonah Williams after he went down in the first quarter of the season opener with a knee injury. Williams is on injured reserve.

If Beachum is unable to play, Barton likely will get the start and Heck will be the backup.

The Cardinals and Lions kick off Sunday at 1:25 p.m. Arizona time.

Behind enemy lines: Cardinals-Lions Q&A preview with Lions Wire

Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon takes Cardinals fans behind enemy lines ahead of the Cardinals-Lions Week 3 game.

The Arizona Cardinals will host the Detroit Lions at State Farm Stadium Sunday afternoon in Week 3. The Cardinals have not beaten the Lions since 2015, going 0-4-1 against them since then and haven’t beaten their starting quarterback, Jared Goff, since his rookie season in 2016.

The Lions and Cardinals are both 1-1 on the season. Both have beaten the Los Angeles Rams.

To prepare for this game, Lions Wire managing editor Jeff Risdon answers a few questions about the Lions to take us behind enemy lines and preview the game. You can also catch him with me on the podcast.

Detroit’s offense and defense

What do we know about the Lions so far after two games offensively and defensively?

The offense has been very effective at moving the ball, but has not been good at converting all those yards into points. Detroit has a top-five overall offense in nearly every statistical metric except scoring, where they’re 16th after two games and 28th in red zone efficiency. It’s very close to being great, but OC Ben Johnson’s play-calling and situational awareness has not been good thus far.

Defensively, Detroit has been very good at rushing the passer. Or should I say, Aidan Hutchinson has been great and gets some help from Levi Onwuzurike and Marcus Davenport (who will play). The team tackles in space well, and the man coverage from the revamped secondary has looked pretty good. They’ve vulnerable in zone coverage and to quarterbacks that can tuck and run, though the Detroit defense is still elite at stopping opposing running backs on the ground.

DE Aidan Hutchinson

Is there any stopping Aidan Hutchinson? What has led to his increased production?

Hutchinson was trending upward all offseason, enough that he was a viable Defensive Player of the Year candidate entering the year. Watching him get win after win in practice reps against All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell was incredibly encouraging, and that was more about Hutchinson rising up than any issues with Sewell.

Hutch has improved the timing of his moves, notably with his power-to-speed. He’s become a complete and versatile talent in his third season, capable of winning inside or out, with speed or power. There’s a fresh and intense confidence to him that the great ones have, and Hutchinson didn’t necessarily have that before.

Jameson Williams

What have the early big numbers for Jameson Williams meant so far? Do you think it will continue?

“Jamo” has matured as a football player so much. The Lions desperately needed him to step into the No. 2 WR role and he has risen to the challenge. His downfield speed has always been ridiculous, but now he’s tracking the ball better and coordinating his feet and length better in his routes. It’s created mismatches and big plays for the Lions offense outside of the way Jared Goff thrived a year ago.

In the first two weeks, the opposing defenses focused on taking away Sam LaPorta and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Williams emerging as a real threat has impacted the attention defenses can pay to those guys.

Key matchups

Which matchups are you most excited to see on Sunday? Which give you the most concern?

The rookie duel between Terrion Arnold and Marvin Harrison Jr. should be worth the price of admission. Arnold has been very good in man coverage and has the physicality and mentality to match Harrison, who has also looked fantastic. May the best rookie win.

I’m curious how the Cardinals pass rushers fare against Sewell and Taylor Decker, one of the best tackle tandems in the league. Dennis Gardeck is dangerous with his size (or lack thereof) and the shorter rushers have typically been the ones who give Decker some trouble at left tackle.

From a personal standpoint, I’m anxious to see what Starling Thomas can offer. He nearly made the Lions as a UDFA last year before the Cardinals snagged him. The drafted rookie DBs in Arizona were both guys I know the Lions looked at during the draft process, so I want to see those guys go up against a creative, aggressive Lions offense.

Predictions

Who wins this game? How?

I think this is a “get-right” game for the Lions offense, which has moved the ball at will but fizzled badly in the red zone. I do think the Cardinals offense will be able to keep pace pretty well, but David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, et. al are just a little too much. Lions 35, Cardinals 31

Cardinals-Lions preview: All eyes with be on Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson

Hutchinson had 4.5 sacks against the Bucs and has 10.5 in his last four regular-season games.

For the Arizona Cardinals to have a fighting chance of winning Sunday, they have to find a way to keep Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson from wrecking the game.

Hutchinson had a monster game last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 4.5 sacks for 37 yards, five tackles (four solo) with four for loss, five quarterback hits and a forced fumble. Yet, the Lions lost.

In the season opener, he had one sack for five yards, five tackles (three solo) with one for loss and four quarterback hits, and they beat the Los Angeles Rams.

Still, the Cardinals know the challenge he presents and the question now is whether right tackle Kelvin Beachum will be healthy. Beachum suffered a hamstring injury apparently in practice Thursday. He was limited that day, did not practice Friday and is questionable for the game.

Last week, after first-game starter Jonah Williams suffered a knee injury and was placed on injured reserve, Jackson Barton was elevated from the practice squad to be the swing tackle. The Cardinals also have Charlie Heck and Luke Tenuta on the practice squad and while Heck played 41 games with 21 starts in four seasons with the Houston Texans, he’s been in Arizona only since Sept. 11. Tenuta was signed to the practice squad on Aug. 29.

It’s not out of the question that rookie Isaiah Adams might be called on to play right tackle after he started 10 games last season there at the University of Illinois. The Cardinals don’t list a backup tackle on their depth chart. To protect themselves in the event Beachum isn’t 100 percent Sunday, two tackles might have to be elevated.

No matter who is matched up against Hutchinson, helping him with a tight end could be beneficial although it could result in one less receiver running pass routes, much less what Hutchinson is capable of doing against the run.

When offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was asked about the Lions defense this week, he said, “It’s an impressive group, really at all three levels. They have premier players. They play extremely hard. The scheme’s really good; it’s really well-coached. They give people fits. It’s one of many reasons that they’re a good football team. It’s not one of those games like if we eliminate this player or this part. They got it at all three levels and they do it at a really high level. So I think it’s going to be a big challenge for us this week.”

He did say about Hutchinson, “Any unit, no matter how talented they are, has a best player. For them, that’s certainly him. He’s dynamic in the pass game for sure. You see the statistics and my guess is he would say this: He’s just as effective in the run game. He takes no plays off. He plays with an extremely high motor. One of the best defensive ends in the league. So, we have to be aware of him as we do the other 10 guys on the field. But certainly if you’re gonna rank ‘em out, he’s at the top of that list in terms of what we need to pay attention to.”

Asked if he will have to be always aware where Hutchinson is, quarterback Kyler Murray said, “You have to be. He warrants that, he’s a great player. The things he has done in his short career are pretty impressive. He is who he is and he’s going to continue to be that guy for the rest of his career. We definitely have to be aware of him.”

“He is in a really good scheme; they give him some freedom and he’s got a skill set,” head coach Jonathan Gannon said. “Wherever he got drafted, you could tell why he got drafted that high.”

Hutchinson currently has 10.5 sacks in his last four regular-season games and with 2.5 Sunday would tie him with Hall of Famer Michael Strahan for the most sacks in five consecutive games, even though two of the games were more than eight months ago.

He admitted to running out of dances when he got to the final sack last week, saying “That fifth one I just put up my hands. It was just one of those days where you’re just a magnet to the ball. It was fun.”

The Cardinals don’t want him having much fun Sunday.

Lions final injury report: 2 players out, 4 questionable vs. Cardinals

Have a look at the Lions’ final injury report of the week before they play the Cardinals in Week 3.

As the Detroit Lions concluded their week of preparation for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, two key starters are questionable.

The details of the Lions’ final injury report are below.

Both players were inactive last Sunday and Rakestraw’s injury occurred in pregame warmups.

Questionable

Glasgow did not practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday and Friday, but head coach Dan Campbell said he will play Sunday.

Campbell said he’s hopeful Anzalone can play after being limited again Friday, but added, “There again, it’s hard to say. You just never know with the concussion protocol.”

As for Arnold, who was limited Friday after not practicing the previous two days, Campbell said, “He’s feeling much better and so today will be important for him, running around, practicing, see what it looks like, but I would say he’s trending the right way.”

No injury designation

DE Marcus Davenport (groin), S Kerby Joseph (back), WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (quadriceps)

Davenport and St. Brown had full participation all week, while Joseph was full Thursday and Friday after being limited on Wednesday.

Cardinals can get another 2 monkeys off their back in Week 3

After getting ending a home losing streak against the Rams in Week 2, they can snap long losing streaks against the Lions and Jared Goff.

The Arizona Cardinals did something in Week 2 they had not done in a long time. They beat the L.A. Rams at home.

They had not done that in a decade. The last time they had beaten the Rams at home, it was the game in November 2014 in which Carson Palmer tore his ACL.

So they got a proverbial monkey off their back.

They have another opportunity in Week 3 to do the same.

It is a couple of monkeys.

The Cardinals have not beaten the Rams since 2015, going 0-4-1.

They have not beaten Detroit’s starting quarterback, Jared Goff, between the time he spent with the Rams and the Lions, since 2016. They are 0-8 in eight games against him since his rookie season. He has thrown 14 touchdown passes and rushed for another three in those eight games.

So a Cardinals win on Sunday would snap a pair of losing streaks. Their losing streak against the Lions would end and so would their losing streak against Goff.

The Cardinals and Lions kick off Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium at 1:25 p.m. Arizona time.

Most of the country won’t get to see Lions-Cardinals in Week 3

Because of Ravens-Cowboys and 49ers-Rams, Lions-Cardinals is priority No. 3 of FOX’s 3 late games.

The Arizona Cardinals host the Detroit Lions on Sunday in what many believe will be a very entertaining, competitive game. But most of the country won’t get to see the game.

The NFL Week 3 TV coverage maps were released and the Cardinals will only get regional coverage.

The game airs on FOX, which gets a doubleheader in every market, is one of three games FOX will air in the 4:25 p.m. ET time slot.

Here is how the TV coverage map looks for the three games. The graphic comes from 506 Sports.

506 Sports

Ravens-Cowboys is FOX’s game of the week with the top broadcast pairing of Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady. That will be seen everwhere in the pink.

The blue areas get 49ers-Rams, while the Cardinals’ game against the Lions will air in the green areas only.

It is understandable because the other two games feature nationally intriguing teams. The Niners and Rams is a good game on paper, even though the Rams look really bad.

But what might be the best game is the Cardinals-Lions matchup and only the two teams’ regular viewing areas will see the game.
