‘Hail Murray’ is one of the greatest moments in Cardinals history

In what is being deemed the ‘Hail Murray’, the Arizona Cardinals defeat the Buffalo Bills one a last second prayer to DeAndre Hopkins.

Oh my heavens.

All seemed lost for the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The Cardinals defense, which played admirably in the second half, gave the offense multiple chances to put the game on ice. Instead, the No. 1 ranked unit sputtered, giving MVP-candidate Josh Allen another chance at redemption. The result was a beautiful touch pass to Stefon Diggs to take the lead 30-26 with roughly 30 seconds left.

It looked as if the Cardinals were going to lose back-to-back heartbreakers to fall 5-4. It was going to mark the second week in a row that they failed to capitalize on a chance to take first place(albeit off tiebreakers) in the NFC West.

Then, Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins did the impossible.

With 11 seconds to go, Murray narrowly escapes trouble and throws a prayer to DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins, with three Pro-Bowl level defensive backs covering him, comes down with the ball to win it for the Cardinals.

Since moving to Arizona, the Cardinals have had some amazing moments. This is undoubtedly one of the best.

From the 2008 playoff run to Larry Fitzgerald’s 2015 overtime winner against the Packers, the 2020 ‘Hail Murray’ rightfully belongs in that conversation. The sheer improbability of a hail mary alone makes this extraordinary, but the amount of defensive talent surrounding Hopkins on the play only adds to that.

The ‘Hail Murray’ has undoubtedly sent MVP discussions in the direction of Kyler Murray, as well as Offensive Player of the Year votes for DeAndre Hopkins.

We won’t know the full impact of this play until the end of the 2020 season, but for now, it grants the Cardinals an opportunity to take a one-game lead over the Seahawks with a win on Thursday.

Bills-Cardinals Preview: Can the Cardinals rebound from their loss to the Dolphins?

The Cardinals are facing a difficult opponent in a seemingly must-win game to keep pace for first place in the NFC West

Last Sunday was disappointing for the Arizona Cardinals.

Their quarterback, Kyler Murray, was unstoppable all day. His offensive unit only punted once when WR Andy Isabella went backwards and lost the first down.

Still, the Cards found a way to lose, the guilty suspects being a depleted defense and kicker Zane Gonzalez. Vance Joseph’s defensive unit was playing without its CB2, CB3, and CB4. As a result, he failed to get creative and put any pressure on Tua Tagovailoa.

This week should be different, however. Byron Murphy and Dre Kirkpatrick are set to return to the lineup against Buffalo. Had they not been ready to come back, the Cards likely would have had a very tough tine again.

So, following last week’s loss, this game becomes very crucial. If the Cardinals lose, they will travel to Seattle in four days at 5-4. That is a much different record than the 5-2 they held going into their bye. Securing the win against Buffalo is paramount to move up to 6-3 going into Seattle.

If the Cardinals go 2-0 in the next week and a half, they will be first place in the NFC West. They must find a way to get it done.

Overreaction Tuesday: Cardinals now must win next 2 games to take division lead

The Cardinals lost a heartbreaker to the Miami Dolphins. Given the strength of schedule moving forward, they cannot falter and must rebound.

Going into Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals knew they were facing a difficult three-game stretch. Miami, Buffalo and Seattle are all in the thick of their own playoff races, while the Cardinals try to make it there themselves.

Personally, I maintained the Cards needed to go 2-1 during this stretch at a minimum. The rest of the schedule eases up from there, but two wins appear necessary to take over first place in the NFC West.

The Cardinals already used up their loss in Sunday’s fall to Miami. It was disappointing, given another missed kick by Zane Gonzalez and the poor defensive effort.

Everything went right for Arizona last week. The Seahawks and 49ers both lost and the Saints beat the Buccaneers. Had the Cards beat the Dolphins, they would now be first place in the NFC West and possibly in the NFC as a whole.

On a positive note, Kyler Murray was unstoppable. Miami has the No. 1 scoring defense and is among one of the league’s best. The Cards under Murray only punted once — when Andy Isabella went backward instead of staying at the sticks. Sunday proved the Cardinals offense is as good as any and can compete against the best defenses.

On defense, it was a mess all day. There’s no reason to panic — yet. The Cards were down to their fifth-string cornerbacks opposite Patrick Peterson, and they were picked on all day. Vance Joseph’s defense sorely missed Byron Murphy (COVID) and Dre Kirkpatrick (thigh). Things should go a bit better upon their return.

It is also worth noting that if Zane Gonzalez continues to struggle, he could be released by the team. Had Isaiah Simmons not bailed him out against Seattle, the Cards would be looking at potential back-to-back losses due to a missed kick. The team has veteran Mike Nugent on the roster, while other options are out there like Stephen Hauschka.

Looking ahead, the Bills and Seahawks are obviously very tough matchups. The Bills just throttled Seattle and appear to be a better team than the Dolphins, who just beat the Cardinals.

If Murphy and Kirkpatrick return for the Cards, we should see a much different defense. Still, the Bills offense featuring Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs and John Brown will pose plenty of challenges.

The Seahawks, of course, nearly beat the Cardinals a few weeks ago. Still, an opportunity presents itself again. Regardless if the Seahawks win this week or not, they would lose their first place spot in the NFC West if they lose to the Cards again.

At 5-3. the Cards are far from panicking. A statement victory over the Bills this weekend could change their fortunes moving forward.

Cardinals-Dolphins preview: Week 9 matchup is 2018 Heisman rematch

Tua Tagovailoa makes his first career road start against the red-hot Arizona Cardinals on Sunday

It’s been a long bye week and a half, but thankfully the Arizona Cardinals ended off on one of the most satisfying notes possible — beating the Seattle Seahawks at home on Sunday Night Football.

Those good feelings must not linger, as any Cardinals player will tell you. A difficult stretch of games lies ahead, and while Arizona sits at 5-2, they have a lot of work left to do to reach the postseason.

The next step in the Cards’ exciting season is the Miami Dolphins, who are coming off a dominant 28-17 over the division rival Los Angeles Rams.

Miami seemingly put the league on notice last week, as Brian Flores’ defense harassed Sean McVay and Jared Goff’s potent offense. Now on the road, can the Dolphins hold off a (to this point) better team in the Arizona Cardinals?
