Rookie Trey Benson not at Wednesday practice for Cardinals

Benson, who has an ankle injury, was not on the field for the open part of Wednesday’s practice.

The Arizona Cardinals are having their depth at running back tested. Already without third-down back Emari Demercado for at least the rest of the regular season, rookie Trey Benson is injured.

He was not out in the open part of Wednesday’s practice.

Benson injured his ankle in the team’s 30-17 win over the New England Patriots. He rushed five times for 22 yards in the win.

Demercado was placed on injured reserve on Saturday with a back injury.

With Benson missing practice, it makes sense why the Cardinals signed running back Tony Jones Jr. to the practice squad. Otherwise, the Cardinals would have only had three running backs — James Conner, DeeJay Dallas and practice squadder Michael Carter — available for practice.

If Benson is unable to play this weekend against the Carolina Panthers, expect Carter to be elevated to the active roster and to fill Benson’s role as the guy giving Conner a few snaps off.

K Matt Prater returning to practice

Prater returned to practice on Wednesday and could kick in a game as early as this Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals could have kicker Matt Prater back before the end of the season. Head coach Jonathan Gannon announced Wednesday that Prater would be designated to return from injured reserve, opening a 21-day window in which he can be reinstated to the active roster. He can be activated at any time during the window or at its conclusion.

He could return as early a this week to play the final three games of the season. The latest he could be activated is after the final game of the regular season if the Cardinals were to make the playoffs.

Prater last played in Week 3. He had surgery to repair the meniscus in his left knee, his plant leg for kicking. Before he got hurt, he had made all six of his field goals and all 10 of his extra points.

Since then, Chad Ryland has kicked in his place. Ryland has made 22-of-26 field goals, including three game-winners, and all 18 of his extra points.

Key Cardinals rookie finally practicing; one starter missing Monday

Report from Howard Balzer on the Cardinals’ ‘bonus’ practice on Monday and who was practicing and who was not.

It was on Aug. 22, 88 days ago that Arizona Cardinals rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson suffered a calf injury in the team’s final practice prior to the cut to 53 players.

Robinson was placed on injured reserve five days later and was then designated for return on Oct. 9. That inspired hope that he was trending toward being ready to play. That, of course, was not the case.

Robinson watched his fellow linemates during individual drills in that first practice and was listed on the injury report as limited, which has different meaning than players on the active roster.

Since then, Robinson has not practiced and during his 21-day window before being activated, he had to deal with the death of his mom. He was activated from injured reserve Oct. 28 with the window closing because not doing that would have made him unable to play for the remainder of the season.

Now, after being seen working on the side with the team’s sports performance staff in the days leading up to the Week 10 game against the Jets, there appears finally to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told the media Monday morning, one hour before a “bonus” day of practice after returning from the bye, Robinson would be on the field. He did in fact participate in stretching and individual drills during the portion of practice open to the media. There will be no official injury report until Wednesday. The scheduled length of the practice was 65 minutes.

Gannon said, “When he’s out there, we’ll have a specific plan for him, but if he’s out there we feel good about him being out there.”

The even-keeled Gannon added, “It’ll be good to get him out there. It’s been a long time. He’s had a tough road. He had a tough injury and he’s working his tail off to get back out there. He wants to get back out there. He had a good week last week. The return-to-play (staff), all those people, did a good job with him. So we’ll take it one day at a time.”

Gannon said during the bye week, “We had multiple guys in here working, filling up the health bucket. He was obviously one of them. He had a good week. He did not have an off week.”

Understandably, Gannon would not speculate whether Robinson will be active for next Sunday’s game in Seattle.

When asked if he’ll be on a “pitch count” if deemed available to play, Gannon said, “One day at a time with that one. We’ll put the pieces together and do the thing we think is best to win the game.”

Missing from practice were safeties Jalen Thompson and Joey Blount. Thompson did not play against the Jets because of an ankle injury, while the reason for Blount’s absence is unknown.

Tackle Kelvin Beachum, who normally doesn’t practice on Wednesday, was on the field Monday.

As we figured after there was a visit to the Cardinals last Tuesday, also on the field was safety Andre Chachere, who was signed to the practice squad Monday. Chachere played 17 games for the Cardinals in 2023, but was released in the Aug. 27 cutdown to 53 players.

Back injury sidelined Cardinals rookie before game vs. Jets

Rookie Isaiah Adams had his back lock up on him before the game against the Jets, so he never even got to play a single snap.

Arizona Cardinals rookie guard Isaiah Adams was looking forward to gaining more experience in Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Unfortunately, his back failed to cooperate, as he got hurt before the game and after inactive were already announced.

Adams had been in a job-share with Trystan Colon at right guard since Will Hernandez suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 5 against the 49ers, a game in which Adams was inactive because of a thumb injury.

In Weeks 6-9, he played a total of 86 snaps with 40 percent against the Packers, 35 against the Chargers, 39 against the Dolphins and 29 against the Bears. In the Green Bay game, he also played snaps at left guard when Evan Brown suffered a knee injury and missed 18 snaps.

After the third play of the game against the Jets, it was reported that Adams was injured and that his return was questionable. It was strange to use the word “return” because he hadn’t played in the game and it turned out he wasn’t even dressed.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon explained Monday that when Adams was “coming out of the tunnel (for pregame warmups) his back locked up. It was kind of a weird deal that can happen. You get out of bed and kind of wrench your back, and you can’t walk. That’s kind of what happened, so it was a bad deal. He was down because he didn’t put his pads on because he couldn’t get moving well enough.”

Colon played all 59 offensive snaps in the game and Adams didn’t play, although Gannon said, “He actually got moving well enough to put his pads on, came out at halftime. I talked to him in the middle of the fourth quarter and he was down. He wanted to play, and you see that kind of frustration, disappointment and sadness in his face. You feel for the guy because he had a really good week (of practice).

“I thought Trystan played well too, but he’ll be out there (after the bye) ready to go. Honestly, just kind of a weird accident.”

Cardinals inactives: CB Sean Murphy-Bunting out after neck injury downgrade

The Cardinals released their inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff. It was headlined by CB Sean Murphy-Bunting, who became a late scratch.

The Arizona Cardinals released their inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff and had a defensive starter become a late scratch because of a nagging injury. Cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, who practiced all week and had no game designation after missing last week’s game with a neck injury, was downgraded to questionable and then deactivated for the game.

Defensive lineman Naquan Jones, questionable with a thigh injury he suffered last week against Miami, also was deactivated, as was rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson, ruled out after he was activated this week from injured reserve.

Starting nose tackle Roy Lopez, who was questionable with an ankle injury after missing last week’s game, was active and set to suit up.

The full inactive list is as follows:

  • CB Sean Murphy-Bunting
  • DL Darius Robinson
  • OL Christian Jones
  • TE Travis Vokolek
  • WR Xavier Weaver
  • DL Naquan Jones

Weaver and Vokolek each have been active only once this season. OL Christian Jones has not been active yet.

With Murphy-Bunting out, expect Max Melton to be in the starting lineup with Star Thomas and Garrett Williams at cornerback.

With Ben Stille elevated from the practice squad, the Cardinals have five defensive linemen active for the game.

Marvin Harrison Jr. out of concussion protocol, will play Monday night

Harrison will start on Monday night against the Chargers, having fully recovered from his concussion.

Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. will not miss the team’s Monday night game against the L.A. Chargers. Head coach Jonathan Gannon announced before Saturday’s practice that Harrison cleared concussion protocol and will play on Monday night.

Harrison suffered a concussion last Sunday in the team’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. By the time the Cardinals started practicing for Week 7 on Thursday, he was already getting limited work.

He was a full participant in practice on Friday and was set to have a full practice on Saturday, the Cardinals’ final practice before they play the Chargers.

Harrison has 17 receptions for 279 yards and four touchdowns so far this season through six games.

The Cardinals and Chargers kick off Monday night at 6 p.m. Arizona time.

Marvin Harrison Jr.’s limited status on Thursday is good news for availability

Being able to practice on a limited basis on Thursday is a good sign that Harrison will come out of concussion protocol in time to play Monday night.

Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. entered this week in the league’s concussion protocol after suffering a head injury during the Cardinals’ loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

It put his availability for the Cardinals’ Week 7 Monday night game against the L.A. Chargers in question. After all, tight end Trey McBride missed a game when he suffered a concussion and New York Giants rookie receiver Malik Nabers recently missed two games with one.

But things initially look good for Harrison to be back on the field for the game Monday night.

He began the week of practice on Thursday limited in practice, wearing a non-contact yellow jersey.

That means he cleared the first two levels of the protocol. The first is simply not having concussion symptoms, then it is getting through a workout and not having symptoms afterward.

He got limited work in practice on Thursday. If he goes symptom-free for 24 hours, he can ramp up even more for a full workload in practice. Once he goes symptom-free after a full practice, he is cleared and ready to play. Because he started the week of practice limited, there is a good chance he will be able to play on Monday.

That’s good news for everyone — Harrison, the team, Cardinals fans and everyone who will tune in to the game.

Cardinals DL Bilal Nichols to miss rest of the season

Nichols is yet another veteran defensive lineman to suffer a season-ending injury.

The Cardinals’ luck with veteran free agent defensive linemen continues to be bad. They placed Bilal Nichols on injured reserve on Tuesday and it apparently will end his season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Nichols is done for the season. He is not expected to return from injured reserve.

Nichols was said to have suffered a stinger on Sunday in the Cardinals’ 34-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

He finishes the season with 10 total tackles in six games, including a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit.

He joins Justin Jones on IR being done for the season. Both were signed to three-year free agent contracts.

Dante Stills now moves into the starting lineup.

Over the last two seasons, four veteran free agent defensive linemen they have signed had suffered season-ending injuries.

Last season, after signing L.J. Collier and Carlos Watkins, both suffered season-ending biceps injuries. Jones tore his triceps earlier this season and now it is Nichols.

K Matt Prater, DL Bilal Nichols land on IR

The Cardinals will have Chad Ryland as their kicker for at least the next month.

When the Arizona Cardinals signed kicker Chad Ryland to the practice squad on Oct. 2, it was said that Matt Prater had a little knee soreness and there was still the possibility he would kick in that week’s game against the 49ers.

Now, not only has Prater missed the last two games, but he will miss at least another four after being placed on injured Wednesday. Ryland, who has made five of his six field-goal attempts in the two games he was elevated from the practice squad, was signed to the active roster. Prater, who turned 40 in August, is in the final year of his contract.

In addition, another defensive lineman was placed on injured reserve with Bilal Nichols going on the list after suffering a stinger in Sunday’s loss to the Packers. Unless Darius Robinson is activated for Monday night’s game against the Chargers, the Cardinals will be without all three defensive linemen projected to be starters before the season.

But, always remember, all teams have injuries.

Monday, when head coach Jonathan Gannon was asked if any of the injuries the team was “sorting through” might be serious, he said, “Right now that’s what it’s looking like. Bumps and bruises of Week 6, but nothing crazy it looks (like) right now.”

Even if Robinson is able to play this week, he will likely be on a snap count after experiencing discomfort in his calf in his first practice last week after being injured Aug. 22.

Defensive lineman Justin Jones was placed on injured reserve after Week 3 and is out for the season because of a torn triceps suffered against the Lions.

The Cardinals also released tight end Jordan Murray and offensive lineman Austen Pleasants from the practice squad.
