Auburn Football names captains for 2023 Season

Four players have been announced as captains this season, including two transfers.

The Auburn Tigers have their leaders for the 2023 football season. Offensive lineman [autotag]Kam Stutts[/autotag], quarterback [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag], and defensive lineman [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag] were named the team’s captains on Tuesday.

The decision to make Stutts and Deal captains for the 2023 season is far from surprising, as both players have been with the team since 2019. The slight surprise on this list are [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] and [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag], both of whom attended other schools in 2022. It speaks to both Thorne and McAllister’s character that the coaching staff saw enough from them in such a short period of time to make them captains of their peers.

[autotag]Kam Stutts[/autotag] has been with the Tigers since 2019, playing sparingly his first few seasons before starting at both guard positions a season ago. He was also one of the Auburn players made available to the media on Monday, showing the staff’s confidence in him to be the face of the line in front of the press. The fifth-year senior earned his bachelor’s degree last spring, and will begin working towards a master’s degree in business administration this fall.

Like Stutts, tight end [autotag]Luke Deal[/autotag] is entering his fifth season with Auburn. The former high school quarterback has never seen much action on the field, but his consistent leadership off of it has defined his Auburn career. Deal was also made available during Monday’s media session. Like a true leader, Deal spent the majority of his time with the media praising his teammates, specifically the running back room.

Over the previous five years, only twice has the Auburn coaching staff named their starting quarterback a captain; ([autotag]Bo Nix[/autotag] in 2020 and [autotag]Jarrett Stidham[/autotag] in 2018)  In both of those cases, the quarterback was coming off a great season at Auburn in which he had the whole previous year to lead his teammates into battle every Saturday.

2023 captain [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag] has yet to play a snap for Auburn. That just alludes to the kind of leader that Thorne is, and can be, for this newly put-together Auburn team.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Elijah McAllister[/autotag] is the fourth and final captain for Auburn’s football team in 2023. The senior from Asbury Park, NJ was “The Boss” during his time at Vanderbilt, serving as team captain twice and playing in 36 total games for the Commodores.

McAllister will go into the season as the starting EDGE linebacker for Auburn, or as they like to call the “jack.” He’ll have plenty of early opportunities against lesser competition to make a name for himself on Auburn’s defensive front.

The announcement of Auburn’s 2023 captains has officially buttoned up a long, active, offseason on the Plains. [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag]’s team finally gets to play a meaningful game in Jordan-Hare this Saturday at 2:30 CST vs. UMass.

Oklahoma Sooners name captains for Big 12 opener vs. Kansas State Wildcats

Oklahoma names captains ahead of their week four matchup with the Kansas State Wildcats.

The Oklahoma Sooners have turned their attention to the Kansas State Wildcats after their week three decimation of Nebraska in Lincoln. Welcoming the Wildcats to Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium Saturday night will be the newly elected captains for this week’s Big 12 opener.

As has become custom, the Oklahoma Sooners elect captains for each week’s matchup. This week, it will be center Andrew Raym, cornerback Jaden Davis, wide receiver Marvin Mims, defensive tackle Jeffery Johnson, and defensive end Ethan Downs.

Marvin Mims leads the Oklahoma Sooners in receiving with 14 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Downs is second on the team in sacks with 2.5 through three games. Jeffery Johnson has the highest run defense grade from Pro Football Focus in 2022. Jaden Davis earned rave reviews for his work in the offseason, and it’s showing on the field, while Andrew Raym has become a stabilizing force in the middle of the Sooners’ offensive line.

Each of these players is off to a strong start to the season for the Oklahoma Sooners and will play big roles as Oklahoma enters Big 12 play.

Here’s a look at some of the best photos of this week’s captains.

Cam Robinson slated to be Jaguars’ sixth captain for tilt vs. Washington

Robinson earned captainship for the Jaguars’ season opener after signing a big extension in the offseason.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster of captains for their Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders is officially set. After letting the players elect five permanent captains for the season, head coach Doug Pederson has reserved the right to name one of the honorees on a rotating basis weekly based on what he sees in practice leading up to each game.

On Friday, Pederson revealed his selection for the first game.

“[It will be] Cam Robinson (OL) this week,” Pederson announced when asked about his decision. “He’s a good one to start the year with the five. They were hand-picked. He’s really shown great leadership with the team since being re-signed back in the spring and all that, and he’s bought in. It hasn’t been easy for him, as well, here. He’s had some challenges and what-not, but he’s in a good place, so a good person to kick it off with.”

Jacksonville’s offensive line will be a crucial part of the Jaguars’ game plan against the Commanders given how deep Washington’s line is on paper. Even with former first-overall pick Chase Young sidelined with an ACL injury, the Commanders’ front seven are still a force to be reckoned with, and could make life miserable for quarterback Trevor Lawrence if his line doesn’t hold up.

Robinson was a second-round selection by the Jaguars back in 2017, and has been through all of the team’s ups and downs over the years. Robinson re-signed in Jacksonville in April, securing a three year $54-million contract that was negotiated after the team used their franchise tag on him.

With new players on the Jaguars’ offensive line, Robinson has been a rock, and looks to be a cornerstone of Jacksonville’s front-five for years to come.

Packers announce 6 team captains for 2022 season

Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, Marcedes Lewis, Kenny Clark, De’Vondre Campbell and Adrian Amos are the six team captains for the Packers in 2022.

The Green Bay Packers selected six team captains for the 2022 season.

The team voted to elect quarterback Aaron Rodgers, running back Aaron Jones, tight end Marcedes Lewis, defensive lineman Kenny Clark, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and safety Adrian Amos as the team captains this year.

The Packers do not have a special teams captain.

Rodgers, Lewis, Clark and Amos have previously been team captains in Green Bay. Jones and Campbell are first-timers.

All six players with wear a captain’s “C” on their uniforms throughout the 2022 season.

The Packers had seven team captains in 2021, including four repeats this year. Receiver Davante Adams is now in Las Vegas, and kicker Mason Crosby and cornerback Jaire Alexander were not voted as repeat captains in 2022. Crosby had been a captain eight times.

Browns players elect 5 players as captains, individual game captains still to exist

After only having game captains last year, the Browns resume the norm of having full-time captains while also adding individual game captains as well:

The Cleveland Browns are in Week 1 preparation for the Carolina Panthers to go against their former starting quarterback Baker Mayfield. Lots to do before kickoff at 1PM on Sunday.

So far, we’ve got the team’s unofficial depth chart and the team’s first official injury report of the season. While 10 players are listed on the initial report, DE Jadeveon Clowney was the only one not practicing but that was due to an illness. Others were either full participants or limited.

We also got news on Wednesday that the Browns are back to having full-time captains this year and five were elected by their teammates:

The team will still have individual game captains, something they did all of last year:

With former center J.C. Tretter and Mayfield gone, it is interesting that the team decided to go back to full-time captains via a team vote. With noise of Tretter retiring because of his NFLPA presidency, it would have been interesting if he hadn’t been voted a team captain.

We’ve heard similar noise about Mayfield, which he touched on last year. Having captains voted on but not your playoff-leading quarterback would have raised some eyebrows last year as well.

That isn’t to say both Tretter and Mayfield may not have gotten the votes but those two have both had interesting offseasons.

Instead, Cleveland returns to the NFL normal with captains being named and none of them being much of a surprise.

Oklahoma Sooners name captains ahead of week 2 matchup with Kent State

Preparing for their matchup with Kent State, the Oklahoma Sooners named captains for week two.

One of the unique things about the Brent Venables’ Oklahoma Sooners is the way captains are selected. Each week, the team votes on who the captains will be for the upcoming game. Last week, it was Brayden Willis, Dillon Gabriel, David Ugwoegbu, DaShaun White, and Justin Broiles.

With week two upon us, the Oklahoma Sooners released the players that will serve as captains when OU hosts the Kent State Golden Flashes on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT in Norman.

Eric Gray, Reggie Grimes, Chris Murray, Woodi Washington, and Theo Wease will be the team captains this week.

Head Coach Kevin O’Connell names Vikings 2022 captains

Led by QB1, the Minnesota Vikings named their captains on Monday

Each year, the players vote on the captains for the team and on Monday, head coach Kevin O’Connell announced who the Vikings captains will be for 2022.

Of the eight captains, four of them are from the offense, three on defense and one on special teams. The cast remains mostly unchanged with Eric Kendricks getting named a defensive captain for the first time, replacing Anthony Barr. The other captains are the same from last season.

Offense

  • Kirk Cousins
  • Dalvin Cook
  • Adam Thielen
  • Brian O’Neill

Defense

  • Patrick Peterson
  • Harrison Smith
  • Eric Kendricks

Special Teams

  • C.J. Ham

The Vikings having a consistent leadership presence in the locker room is incredibly valuable and will be a massive benefit for the beginning of the new regime.

Jaguars HC Doug Pederson will let players elect team captains in 2022

Pederson will defer the responsibility of picking the #Jaguars’ captains to his players this season.

With the regular season kickoff just over a week away, the Jacksonville Jaguars have finalized their 53-man roster. With stars on both sides of the ball and a new coaching staff ready to prove how capable their team can be, the last touches of preparations are being made to ensure the team is competitive in their Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders.

Their depth chart is set, but the honor of captainship in this first year of a monumental rebuild remains to be apportioned to deserving players on the Jaguars’ roster. Head coach Doug Pederson commented on this quandary in his Thursday press conference, telling reporters that he intends to let his players choose who among them is worthy of the honor this season.

“I put it on the team actually,” He said when asked if he would be choosing the captains himself. “It’s their choice, and I think it’s important that they pick them. It’s not necessarily me. I stay out of it, and we’re going to go through that process, and I do two offense, two defense, and two special teams captains, five permanent for the year, then I’ll rotate a sixth each week, but those are guys that their peers look up to. There’s a level of responsibility
there. It’ll be good to see who they pick.”

Whomever the honors are bestowed on this season can be expected to be fixtures on all phases of the Jaguars’ game this year, and will almost certainly be considered leaders of the rebuilding franchise.

Some players to watch for at the Jaguars’ Week 1 coin toss are Trevor Lawrence, Christian Kirk, Josh Allen, and Shaquill Griffin. It is unclear who the special teams’ representative might be, but the rotating cast of the team’s sixth captain on a given week will likely be a player who stands out in practice.

With so much potential on Jacksonville’s roster, the honor for that sixth spot will be hotly contested, and should give an indication of which players grow the most over the course of this 2022 season.
