Watch: Steph Curry gets sparring rematch with Canelo Alvarez on the golf course

For the second time, Steph Curry met Canelo Alvarez on the golf course for a sparring battle.

For the ninth time, Steph Curry will tee up for the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood in Lake Tahoe. For the second straight year, the Golden State Warriors guard is building a new tradition for the event with a championship boxer.

At the 2020 edition of the tournament, Curry squared off against super-middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez for a sparring match on the golf course.

Fast forward to 2021; the pair met in a warm-up round before the tournament. Sparring quickly ensued between the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and Canelo. Luckily for Curry and the Warriors, Canelo didn’t connect with one of his powerful counter punches.

Watch: Steph Curry jokingly spars with boxer Canelo Alvarez during celebrity golf tournament

During the start of the ACC celebrity golf tournament, Steph Curry was caught jokingly sparring with middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.

If he’s not launching long-distance 3-pointers at Chase Center, watching Stephen Curry break out the golf clubs is a favorable second option. With the Golden State Warriors one of eight teams not bound for the NBA’s restart in Orlando, Curry will get more time on the golf course.

Over the weekend, the two-time Most Valuable Player will participate in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Resort in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. After placing seventh in the 2019 edition of the competition, Curry will eye a top finish in his eighth appearance in the tournament.

When the tournament begins, Golden State’s six-time All-Star will be joined by a star-studded cast that includes championship boxer, Canelo Alvarez. Before the tournament teed off, Curry crossed paths with the middleweight. Curry squared off with Alvarez and went through a mock sparring routine.

Canelo Alvarez’s decision over Gennadiy Golovkin in their second fight is seen by some as a defining victory.

That followed a disputed draw in their first fight. Now, according to reports, the rivals could meet one last time in December or perhaps May of next year depending on coronavirus restrictions.

Of course, Golovkin, 38, would like one more chance to beat his nemesis and earn a big payday. But does Canelo need the fight? The superstar can command great sums of money against a number of opponents. And he already defeated Golovkin. Does he need to beat him again for his legacy?

In this episode of Jabs with Mannix and Mora, DAZN commentators Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora give their thoughts on that topic.

Here’s what they had to say.

Video: Mannix, Mora: Should Canelo Alvarez fight twice this year?

DAZN commentators Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora give their thoughts on Canelo Alvarez’s plans to fight twice before the end of the year.

Canelo Alvarez’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, has said his fighter wants to fight twice before the end of the year.

Alvarez could face Billy Joe Saunders or another super middleweight titleholder in September and fight again in December, possibly against rival Gennadiy Golovkin a third time.

Of course, the coronavirus pandemic complicates things. Alvarez might fight behind closed doors in September but would hope to have fans in the seats in December, especially if he faces Golovkin in a high-profile fight that would generate a large live gate.

Gennadiy Golovkin had run roughshod through the middleweight division for years, knocking out one opponent after another. He might’ve been the most feared fighter in the world at that time.

Then came two close encounters with Canelo Alvarez and tough fights with Steve Rolls and rugged Sergey Derevyanchenko in which Triple-G looked mortal.

The question was asked at that time: Is Golovkin losing it?

In this episode of Jabs with Mannix and Mora, DAZN commentators Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora discuss whether one of the most respected fighters of his generation is still feared at 38.

Gennady Golovkin: Kamil Szeremeta, not Canelo Alvarez, is next

Golovkin said he plans to follow through on plans to defend his middleweight title against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III? It’ll have to wait until next year, apparently.

Golovkin told Sports Illustrated that he plans to follow through on plans to defend his middleweight title against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta, although when it will take place remains uncertain because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Alvarez presumably would be next in line if Triple-G beats Szeremeta.

“I made a commitment before all this situation with coronavirus happened,” Golovkin said. “I’m talking about my fight with Szeremeta. I intend to keep my word. Once the situation changes, as soon as everything is back to normal, I intend to have this fight first.”

Alvarez and Golovkin fought to a draw in September 2017; the Mexican won the rematch by a decision the following September.

Golovkin pointed out that Alvarez had not been eager to face him a third time.

“They actually avoided this fight in September,” he said. “They didn’t want to fight in May of 2020. So I went my way. I have my own career, and I figured: How long should I wait?”
