Bo Nix wins the 2023 Campbell Trophy for nations’ best scholar-athlete

Bo Nix joins Justin Herbert as the only Oregon Duck to ever win the Williams V. Campbell Trophy.

One thing that Dan Lanning has made a point of during his time at Oregon is making sure that the players who are on his team not only are great players, but great men, as well. It’s not something that is unique to Lanning, but we’ve seen him emphasize it a ton over the past couple of years.

There may be no person who better exemplifies that characteristic than Bo Nix. The Ducks’ quarterback was honored on Tuesday night as the winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to the college football player with the best combination of academics, leadership and on-field performance

The Campbell Award was last won by an Oregon Duck in 2019 when Justin Herbert took home the trophy.

Nix is up for several awards this year, including the Heisman Trophy, which will be awarded on Saturday night in New York City.

Olu Fashanu named a finalist for Campbell Trophy

Penn State OL Olu Fashanu was named a finalist for college football’s top academic award.

Penn State offensive lineman [autotag]Olu Fashanu[/autotag] is well on his way to a future in the NFL, but he’s not just all about football. Fashahnu is a highly-regarded student as well. Fashanu was named one of the 16 finalists for this season’s William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame.

Referred to as the academic Heisman, the Campbell Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s top scholar-athlete who best combines academic success and football performance along with leadership. Just being named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy is an honor by itself.

In a press release from Penn State on Wednesday, it was reported Fashanu has a 3.45 GPA in Supply Chain and Information Systems. He is the program’s 20th ll-time member of the scholar-Athlete Class. Former quarterback Sean Clifford is the most recent Penn State player in that group before Fashanu, in 2021.

Fashanu is hoping to become the second Penn State football player in program history to bring home the prestigious award.

Penn State has one Campbell Trophy winner in program history. That distinction belongs to John Urschell in 2013. Urschel recently became a math professor at MIT, where he studied to get his Ph.D. during his NFL career.

Sooners’ Safety Pat Fields named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy

Oklahoma Sooners Academic All-American Pat Fields has been named a finalist for the 2021 Campbell Trophy.

As part of a secondary that’s been through the wringer on the injury front, senior safety Pat Fields has been the stabilizing force for a group that has missed key players at corner and safety for the past several weeks. To help overcome the losses of his secondary teammates, Fields leads the team in the snap count, playing 87% of the possible 539 defensive snaps in 2021.

Fields has provided the necessary leadership and a steady hand to a defensive unit that is missing Woodi Washington, Delarrin Turner-Yell, and D.J. Graham.

For his efforts on the field and those in the classroom, Fields has been named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy. The trophy, which was also won by former Sooners center Ty Darlington in 2015, goes to the player that both exemplifies excellence in the classroom, on the field, and makes an impact in the community.

In Norman, and in his hometown of Tulsa, Fields has been active in the community creating programs like “Town Business,” a financial literacy seminar that provides instruction on budgeting, money management, credit, and personal branding to high school football student-athletes.

A fourth-year Senior, Fields is pursuing both a Bachelor’s in Business Administration degree in accounting as well as a master’s degree in accounting. Per the University of Oklahoma Fields has maintained a 3.82 GPA in his studies.

Pat Fields was a 2020 second-team Academic All-American selection and an All-Big 12 Academic first-team selection in 2019 and 2020. He’s a two-time captain of the team and is currently second in tackles for the Oklahoma Sooners defense.

As a finalist, Fields has won a post-graduate scholarship of $18,000 and will attend the Campbell Trophy awards ceremony at the ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada on Dec. 7 for the 63rd annual selection of the Campbell Trophy award winner. If selected, Fields’ post-graduate scholarship would increase to $25,000.

Fields founded “Town Business,” a financial literacy seminar that teaches high school football student-athletes about budgeting, money management, credit and personal branding. Along with other collegiate student-athletes and former NFL players, he conducted the first seminar in May in his hometown of Tulsa. He also founded the Black Wall Street Scholarship, collaborating with the president of the OU National Black Alumni Association to establish an endowment with the purpose of providing scholarships for underrepresented and lower income students from Tulsa, and coordinated a back-to-school event and football camp in July for economically vulnerable elementary school students in his hometown. – OU Athletics Department

Oklahoma’s Pat Fields Named a Campbell Trophy Semifinalist

The veteran Sooners DB is earning recognition for both his academic and athletic career.

Sooners’ safety Pat Fields is making an impact in the classroom as well as the football field. On Wednesday, the National Football Foundation announced that the veteran defensive back is a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.

According to the NFF, the Campbell Trophy is awarded to the best football scholar-athlete in the nation for combined academic and athletic excellence. It is not limited to a specific position group, as all senior or graduate students with a 3.2 or higher GPA are eligible for the honor. Candidates are nominated by their schools and must also display strong leadership and citizenship characteristics.

The two-time team captain owns a competitive resume and is sure to garner serious consideration for the trophy as the season progresses.

In the classroom, Fields has compiled a 3.82 GPA and is simultaneously completing a Bachelor in Business Administration and a master’s degree in accounting. The veteran Sooner is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and a Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award winner.

Fields’ community work is well-documented by Sooners Sports. In 2018, he founded a seminar called “Town Business” to provide financial literacy to high school and college athletes. Fields is also responsible for the “Black Wall Street Scholarship,” which he created alongside the university president to aid low-income students from his hometown of Tulsa.

On the football field, the fourth-year Sooner ranks second on the team with 23 total tackles. The highlight of his season to this point is the PAT return that helped the Sooners pull away from Nebraska in week three.

The National Football Foundation will announce the finalists for the Trophy on October 27. The winner will be declared on Tuesday, December 7, and will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Michigan State’s Dominique Long is a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy.

[jwplayer 5UjOXQgj]

Michigan State Football’s Dominique Long has bounced around between safety, cornerback, special teams, and back to safety, but one place he has stayed consistent is off the field, where he has consistently been one of the team’s top performers in the classroom. Due to that excellence off the field, Long has been named a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy award, which is given to a student-athlete who has the best performance in academics, community service, and on the field.

Long will be competing this year for a spot in the starting lineup, a position that has eluded him for the past few years. Going into his senior season, Lon has 38 career tackles, with most of those coming on special teams.
